top draft picks and their extensions historically

There has been a lot of talk around the league about how much  players are worth after there rookie contracts expire. What are you paying for production or potential? Before 1995 you could sign rookies to whatever type of contract you wanted. (length and value)

The rookie salary scale was implemented prior to the 1995 draft by the NBA and the National Basketball Player's Association, a year after overall No. 1 pick Glenn Robinson signed a 10-year, $68 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks out of college. CBA rules now force first-round picks to play at a predetermined pay structure for at least three years before becoming a free agent.

What some draft picks might make under the old system

NBA players generally want no less than the guys drafted after them. Gordon was drafted # 3 and Deng # 7 overall so I compiled a list  of players drafted around those slots between 1999-2004 to what other players picked in the top 9 signed for. Because so many players were either Maxed out or given just below MAX iwhile GM's were still adjusting to the new rules (1996-1998) I left them out. Think Marbury, Allen, Bibby, Jamison, Hughes (ugh), Van Horn, Ron Mercer.

Included all the Bulls picks except Jwill and Brand. I also included Al Jefferson # 15 and Josh Smith #16 in 2004. Also excluded players who were huge busts and never signed extensions i.e. Dajuan Wagner, Nikoloz Tskitishvili .

The players are listed by their draft day position, height, weight, position, team that signed them (signed not drafted), years, value, best statistical season before extension.

A couple of things that came to mind while reviewing this list

Denver set the market for Chandler's contract with Nene's deal could Iggy's deal have the same effect on Deng this year?

Will Gordon come in closer to Hinrich (47 million) or  Wally's world (67 million)

What would the Bulls have looked like with Pau and Tyson?

2000 has to be one of the worst drafts ever

If maggette's happy with 5yrs-50 million

why would loul and ben not want something around that range? and if he did get that 50 mill contract why didn’t we get him?! he’s a chi-native right?

We're not I dont think signing them will win us a championship

It will only make us mediocre at best. 55 wins 2nd round exit. We need lottery balls and cap space to lure in. Plus two new top 8 draft picks and a ton of money for a top notch free agent. Mediocracy is a killer we cant let it happen to us.

The lottery

is the last thing the Bulls should be counting on now (unless you think we’ll be so terrible next year that we’ll actually ‘earn’ a top 3 pick).

We did a little double lottery probability math a few months ago, and the odds say we should look in other places for our next step up in personnel improvement.

55 wins?

We’re going to have a 19 year old starting point guard and we’ve got Noah and Thomas who haven’t looked great in summer league as 2/3 of our front court rotation? Our team has plenty of potential to be good/great sometime when Rose matures and if Thomas and Noah can be more consistent, but there’s no way we’re winning 55 next year with or without these two. I think we’ll miss the playoffs even with them the way that some of the teams in the East are improving.

i respectfully disagree.

Tyrus this season isn’t going to start ahead of Gooden. I know sometimes bogging day in and day out about certain players i.e. Thabo and Tyrus some times the man-crushes are inevitable but its not gunna happen. Gooden is a solid PF with a consistent positive attitude. Yes his d is sketchy at times but he’s a solid rebounder with effective post moves and he knows his ROLE. I dream about Tyrus becoming the next shawn kemp but who knows. It’s just frustrating because I don’t understand why Tyrus and Noah haven’t gained any weight(and the whole noah weed/ciggaretes nonsense), I mean Dwight Howard is younger than both of them and he blew up to David Robinson-size with in two seasons. WTF these guys got the skill but do they have the desire? They should be buffed-out gym rats not Ben Gordon. But i guess i’ll just try to patiently wiat for the next couple season’s to hopefully be rewarded with all the youngin’s growth.

Well

be a good team next year. Take that to the bank. its amazing how many bandwagon jumpers there are. Last year everyone was saying top two seeds in the east. Its not absurd to think the bulls could win 45-50 games next year.
