Summer League game one reports
I personally don't have much of a reaction. It was just fun to see Derrick Rose in a Bulls 'uniform', and Tyrus and Noah play. I wish both of the latter reigned in their summer league 'I don't give a crap' mode a bit more, but heck it's a glorified pick-up game.
As for Rose, he looked great at some points and shaky in others. Doubt that'll be uncommon.

Here's the ESPN game report if you want to put it into the first post...
It actually has some pretty good quotes, which I posted in Game Thread II.

More from Ira
Noah got Beasley on one early try, but to Beasley’s credit, he tracked down the block and scored.
This is how Beasley gets boards and buckets. He’s not tall enough and his release isn’t high enough for his initial shot to avoid being blocked or appear as if he’s just throwing it at the rim by design to miss it just to get the board and putback.
He should get credit for this work. He’s quicker rebounding his own misses then he is going straight up. You either put a taller man on him and swarm him after the shot or you just push him out to the perimeter and make him set illegal screens.
This is all going to come with more practice time for the Bulls. Did Rose even sign his contract yet?

More good stuff from Ira for the haterz:
Rose then dazzled with a transition layup that had an Eastern Conference scout in awe. “Speed. Quickness. Strength. Ambidexterity. All in one three-second burst.” The game belonged the Beasley, the moments to Rose.

I don't think Keith Askins will be getting head coaching interviews anytime soon
http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_basketball_heat/2008/07/beasley-breakdo.html
Beasley played only 8:17 in the first half. Why? Because of foul trouble. That’s when Heat President Pat Riley reminded summer-league coach Keith Askins of the no-foul-out rule in place. Beasley had three in the first quarter.
I love how he tried to make it seem like he was “teaching Beasley a lesson.” Hey, our coach may have no experience, but at least he appears to know the rules.

Scary quote
“The game belonged the Beasley, the moments to Rose.”
That could have been applied to Tyrus fir his first couple of seasons. The games would belong to the other team, the moments to Tyrus.
Rose and Tyrus have moments of brilliance, but consistency is what we lack.
Beasley on the other hand was pretty consistent. “Not bad, winning over the referees in career game No. 1.” is something I’d like to hear about Bulls players….

Can you announce co-rookie of the year winnners after the first summer leage game?
If so, according to the first two links (Ira and Ridiculous) , you can give Beasley and Chalmers the award now.

Thorpe was just on ESPN
(Phone)...basically said that as the week goes along, he expects Rose, along with Beasley, to be the best player there. Said Rose was tentative at first but settled in just fine. Didn’t seem to be worried by his performance in the least.

Hey, no insulting Mario!
KU used him defending off the ball because he’s so good at steals, so it may take him a little time to get used to defending the ball handler. I’d say his offense is so much better than Du’s that it more than makes up for any gap on the defensive side.
If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

I think it would also be fair to say
the announcers yesterday were giving “Superintendant” Mario too much credit for Rose’s bad start.
I think most of that was on Rose trying to figure out whether he should be running plays or making plays. When he finally decided he should be making plays, Mario’s defense became a non-factor.

when Rose attacked, he blew right by, Super Mario or no Super Mario. That’s why I’m not so much worried about yesterday as I am looking forward tonight.
If anything, Rose was more explosive then I’d thought. He’s just too unselfish at present.
Attack, attack, attack. Over-aggressiveness is one way to turn the ball over. A worse way to turn it over is being too passive.

Well.
Beasley played really well. That’s cool: I was wondering how his game would translate to the NBA, and while this is summer league, he did good against Tyrus and Noah [were they just dogging it? Hard to imagine, but … eck, otherwise]. I’m still for the Rose pick, he just seems like he’ll really be transcendant once he figures it all out. He’s not a pure point, though. He’s too good at scoring to be a pure point. :P
The cuts are really nice to watch.

Ahh… PG is the hardest position to learn the NBA by far… It will take more time than any other.. At times this year we might even say why didnt we get OJ Mayo or something stupid like that. Give the kid time… PG is like the QB in football but not as long of a learning time. Look at CP3, look at Deron, look at Nash, look at Billups, look at Parker, and on and on… BE PATIENT PEOPLE

the stats from this game mean nothing
rose will have his missteps and bad turnovers but I think he displayed, in the second half especially, that his speed and strength are something to behold. He’s going to be such an improvement over hinrich/duhon, even this year. Would’ve been nice to see some more shooters around him to make it easier but its the summer league. and hell learn the nuance to tyrus and noah’s game soon enough. what we have is a point guard who can penetrate at will but i think we already knew that.
no one could guard beasley but to temper it a bit, no one matched up well with him, tyrus and noah werent coordinated and strong enough. plus, vanilla defenses werent going to help the cause either.
tyrus showed some progression especially in the transition, dribbling the ball up on a few breaks and deferring to rose on command. Though he still looks like a toothpick on the court.
in conclusion, its summer league. balls balls balls.

I am very worried...
... things are unfortunately not looking good at all. I am afraid that all my worries regarding Paxson’s abilities as a GM will come true this year.
a.) Many posters here have been obsessed with TT since he joined the Bulls. Personally I have yet to see any valid signs (i.e consistency, offensive moves etc) to indicate that he will become a successful NBA player. Paxson chose TT over LaMarcus Aldridge?
b.) Rose over Beasley. It is still very early days but hey… Beasley was having FUN playing with Noah & TT. What more can I say. Chalmers, are you kidding me? It appears that Reily stole Pax’s wallet… and Pax has still not realised it.
c.) Vinny… How can Pax not secure D’Antoni or even Carlisle when they were both free? This could be a disaster.

Rose has a really good explanation for his first half
’’In the first half, I was coming down and running plays and just reacting. We were really trying to push the ball, but my wings weren’t used to running more. So when I came down, I had to call out the plays. In the second half, that’s when I started driving the ball a little more.’‘
It seems that he was really nervous. I remember one time, when someone from the Heat was on the FT line, we couldn’t stay still with his foots. At the time it looked like he has dancing or so. But when he become more aggressive, we saw what he can do. And I remember one time he penetrated and then passed the ball outside, where some of the D-Leaguers, wide open, missed the shot. Imagine if it was Gordon on that sport…
As for TT, he hadn’t a bad game. A double double is always a double double. But if he wants to take the 4th place from Gooden, I think he will have to work even harder. And, of course, I think VDN was made a mistake when he switched TT and Noah. Beasley had a really good time playing against Noah and with TT he was having more problems
:S
Ok, this was the first Summer League and Summer League supposes to be a harder training session. But like someone once said, to play well, you have to train hard. So, I expect today we could see some improve – I don’t mind if it will be only a little one – but some improve of our guys

I worry about Rose's game maturity
He’s gonna be a pretty good player…. but you guys keep in mind that he, as a point guard, came out after a freshman year with the main highlights being March Madness…. I am a true proponent of having the players play longer before going to the NBA…also think they should be paid in college too….Rose’s game will come to him, and that is a reason I say keep Kirk…all the comparisons to Chris Paul and Deron Williams, well, how long did they develop prior to going to the league?
just another tidbit – our top scorer is still gonna be Ben Gordon….I just hope that he doesnt have to handle the ball to as much to work up space

I only watched the first 8 minutes
but it was pretty ugly. Expected to be ugly, but it was worse than I thought.
Thomas and Noah looked like goofs around the rim on offense with the ball. This is our expected starting front line against Beasley and guys that might make the Heat roster helping. They couldn’t really get anything close. The shots were pathetic heaves. They might as well have been playing with a shot put.
I’m going to have to be completely unfair here and blame Keith Langford for the loss. ;)

It wasn't completely terrible
Rose got better in the second half and TT ended with a double double. It wasn’t completely terrible. To do well in summer league you have to be very selfish and that just didn’t seem like that attitude of our players yesterday. I am hoping that Rose looks for his own shot more in the next game and that Noah and TT stop acting like knuckleheads. We’ve seen them play better before. I doubt they forgot how do, they just didn’t seem terribly interested in running up the stats yesterday.

Maybe I was being fair in blaming Keith Langford. He’s playing Summer League ball to make an NBA roster. The guys we’re trying to see are guaranteed spots.
In SL ball you have to get used to the one step, dribble, pullback jump shot because it’s the Summer league version of the NBA free throw.

Things that surprised me
were how passive Rose started out. Just passing it off and watching on so many occasions. At least set a screen or cut or something. He just hung around on the weekside. If this were actually instructions from the coaching staff I’m not really impressed by them, either… His strengths are driving and dishing and he should be doing that most of the time. And we really didn’t push the tempo like I expected. That may have been his wings not running up like he said. If I were auditioning for an NBA-team I’d be running my butt off…
I’m also disappointed that our 3rd and 2nd year players were’nt able to play better defense on Mbizi. Especially considering this is what they are supposed to be good at… Their offensive struggles is not that surprising…

Why they moved Tyrus to guarding the 5 and Noah guarding the 4 made no sense. It was this second half adjustment that opened the floodgates as Noah was not quick enough to stay in front of Beasley.

Only Beasley just took advantage of Noah
The Heat adjusted. Beasely started getting the ball further from the basket. Bring Noah out, isolate Thomas’ help, then let Beasley pick apart Noah’s weaknesses. Take him baseline, shoot. Take it to Beasley’s left, layup.
When you’re getting burned on nearly every possession you make adjustments. In Summer League, getting burned on nearly every possession might be the objective.

Running plays vs. Making plays
This comment from Rose after the game was the most encouraging part of the afternoon:
“In the first half, I was coming down and running plays,” Rose said. “In the second half, I started driving the ball more. I thought about making plays, beating my man. Coach was like, ‘That’s going to be our offense.’ So [Wednesday], you’re going to see a lot of that.”
This is all the Bulls should do the next four games. Give it to Rose and tell him to use his athleticism to get to the basket. He needs to come out of the summer league with the absolute certainty that he has the green light 100% of the time.
My god did Tyrus and Noah look awful! They have no offensive game at all. It hurt to watch them. Ugh!—especially with the forced comparison of their stiff ineptitude vs Beasley’s fluid and sophisticated offense. Compared to Beasley, it looked like they’d never been on a basketball court before in their lives.
Finally, at least a few times in the second half, Rose gave up trying to get the ball to them for their 2-foot missed gimme’s, and started making plays himself. Why bother running plays when Noah and Thomas can’t even draw iron from 2 feet?

Beasley's face up game
is leaps and bounds above Thomas and Noah. When you can face up in the post it gives you so many more options. Thomas and Noah are limited to the back down, bruiser style. Thomas has the speed, but needs the footwork discipline to slice right by his defender in the post.
Watch more of Beasley. He receives the ball, plants his feet, then ATTACKS. You can’t take a nap after receiving the ball in the post and then hope to make a move. You’ve already given your defender time to set up his position to take away your options.

This is the smartest thing you've ever written
Why bother running plays when Noah and Thomas can’t even draw iron from 2 feet?
The best PG’s in the game know when to run the offense, and when to just do it all themselves. I want Rose to have the selfishness of Beasley when the offense isn’t going right. Jack up shots, do whatever you want, because there’s no one else on that roster that measures up to him talent-wise.
I’m not too worried about how shitty Noah was, he played well last season against real NBA players, having a bad summer league game is not a big deal.
I am concerned with how amazingly mediocre Thomas was. I’m not like certain posters here who are ready to declare the season over because they lack perspective, but shit what the hell does David Thorpe teach?

We need to let Rose go
He should handle the ball on every single possession. None of this pass it to Langford crap. Langford should be spacing the floor to find his position to receive the pass for an open shot. He should not be handling the ball to drive to the rim.
Put the ball in Rose’s hands. Get Thomas on the perimeter setting screens to leak to the 18’ shot or cut to the rim.
Rose with the ball and a high screening thomas is the keys to ignition to the Tyrus Thomas muscle car. You have to start the vehicle before it can give you all its horsepower.

Coach was like, ‘That’s going to be our offense.’ So [Wednesday], you’re going to see a lot of that."
I am down with that. Summer league does not seem the place to be working on plays, especially when spacing is bad and your players are either not giving a good effort or are scrubs (wasn’t PeeOn SG for a while?). I’d rather seem him get his man off the dribble, get himself into the offense, and then, after all of that, working in some of the other players instead of forcing it.

’’Our guys battled, but obviously there’s a lot to work on,’’ Del Negro said. ’’Tyrus getting into foul trouble hurt us, especially early. But they controlled the tempo of the game with their size and aggressiveness.’‘

Maybe he was simply referring to the fact that Tyrus gave the Heat quite a few free throws in the early going.
