Why Do People Say Gordon and Deng had an off-year?

I am a new user to this site, but it is killing me why everyone thinks Ben Gordon and Luol Deng had an off-year.  I am trying to form my own opinion and every drop off I see in their production can be attributed to minutes (their PER 48 is almost identical to the year before)

Was everyone expecting more than last year (ie, continued development?)

Can anyone help shed light on the subject?

And

Not only did their PER decrease – and Gordon’s defense went to straight to the crapper (see plus/minus numbers) – they decreased at an age when an improvement would have been expected, ESPECIALLY for Deng.

You seem to be confused

Although given your skills with the Shift and CapsLock keys I’m shocked at the possibility. YaoPau is providing the player’s Player Efficiency Rating, not their points per game.

Fair enough

Although I’m drunk right now, so if anyone can make me respond in the next few minutes we might get something interesting! :)

Numbers aside

Most people assumed Deng would have some kind of All-Star caliber year (though I think he was deserving in 2007 as well). His game didn’t really change, he still relied on his mid range jumper, and didn’t add the 3 point shot he was talking so much about. Maybe that was because of the injuries and the season going down the drains, but he was pretty disappointing last year.

Numbers fell, did not developed and...

1) they didn’t play defense well (something the numbers does not show)
2) let the other team comeback from huge difference in dozens of games and

they both sucked

they both sucked last year… thats why you should defintly not trade either of them because their value is not at it’s peak yet. I think having a guy like rose will take the pressure off the bulls trying to create their own offense… cause lets face it gordon nor deng, nor hinrich can create offense. Thats when they breakdown, and rose will change that.. so expect big things for gordon and deng next season. hopefully last year will only save us a few mill off their contracts for sucking big balls last year.

we were expecting more from them...

they didn’t have a drop off from the year before. we were just expecting them to take their games to the next level and they didn’t. that is why everyone says they had an off season.

This is who they are

why does anyone expect more out of these guys? Ben Gordon 6’ 1” SG will never be able to defend he will never be able to post people up and he can’t get his own shot. 18-20 a game is all you can expect from him. And Dang- he is just to slow, he can’t shoot from behind the 3-point line and his post moves would make a high schooler laugh.

More interesting...

is why they had off years in contract years. Do you want your best players to be the ones that can’t step it up when millions of dollars are on the line?

by JockstrapNoah on Jul 5, 2008 11:23 AM CDT reply actions

don't get me wrong

they are serviceable players but we should stop hoping these guys become something they are not. and if they want 15-18 million a season trade them.

could'nt agree more

Gordon is a 5-11 2 gaurd that may lead the the league in to’s in 4 th quarter. Deng has value and the way silly money has been thrown around someone wil pay.

He was going to be in the Wizard of Oz, but then it was cast in the 1940's.

Gordon’s agent is, however, negotiating a remake – preferably at 5 movies at the max, though they may take the one-movie MLE.

I just clicked 'actions' trying to edit the 'MLE' part of that post and it disappeared.

I think I’m going to actually read the help section for a little bit. ...
