ESPN.com: Deng on the verge of signing 6 year/70 million dollar deal

[Woo-hoo! Original fanpost after the jump. The article actually says 'in excess' of $70m. Hopefully some more details will be available by Wednesday. If you couldn't tell after the many discussions here over the past few weeks, I'm just happy it's done, and the offseason is now underway. -ed.]

According to ESPN, Deng is close to signing a 70 million dollar deal over 6 years.

Star-divide

Seems about right, I'd have prefered to get him somewhat cheaper but it looks like the Okafor signing gave him a clear price to ask slightly less than and that was that.

Next up is Gordon, who I think with this deal probably should expect 10 million, which would be palatable even for Bulls fans who aren't too high on him like me.  More importantly it seems Paxson's (or Reinsdorf's) deliberate pace didn't cost the Bulls here and in fact may have gotten him to sign for less although we'll probably never know.

Finally

The Bulls offseason has started. Paxson was very careful this summer, and it drove me nuts. Im just glad that other GM signed reasonable deal, so the Bulls didn’t extremely overpay because of a shotty market price. The dominos can continue to fall.

Thank God

That’s a pretty good deal for everyone involved.

As for it not costing us anything...

by waiting until getting these two sorted out before making any trades we might have missed out as a lot of trade action has already finished.

Good news.

However, in my (speculative) opinion, the magnitude of the contract doesn’t bode well for Gordon. I doubt that the Bulls will commit to two contracts worth more than $11MM per year. But I could be wrong.

That thought crossed my mind as well

and Gordon even acknowledged that his contract situation may be affected by the glut of guards on the roster. With Reinsdorf apparently favoring Hinrich, I wonder if BG’s negotiations are more centered around sign-and-trades now.

WIth BG being 25, I wouldn’t rush to offer him a 6-year deal. Maybe a $40m/4 year deal if he’s going to stay a Bull?

by messwiththebull on Jul 29, 2008 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe it doesn't bode well for him, but he should realize that he's not quite worth what Deng is.

2/20 would be nice to see with him

It looks to me like, accounting for Rose and the fact we have to sign one more min salary player (to meet the minimum roster requirement), we’ve got $7.74M before we hit the tax threshold.

That’d get Gordon something like 5yrs and $46M or 6yrs and $58M. Since that’s less than the offer that was pulled from last year, I’m guessing Ben starts looking hard at other options. A short-term deal, even for 1 year with a player option, might not kill him, but if I were Ben I’d prefer to take a bit less and go somewhere else than base my future earnings on a team that’s not made any real commitment to play or keep him.

Of course, if I were the Bulls, I’d pay Gordon a bit more and try to shave some salary somewhere else. I think that could be done, but it doesn’t fit with Reinsdorf’s typical cost certainty approach.

YES!!!!!!!!

Don’t know why everyone isn’t happier about this.

He was our top priority in resigning and we got him.

That’s the offer I expected, we’ll see about Gordon.

Pax-faith shaken

I think everyone is waiting for the deal to be finalized before happiness can ensue (and to a certain extent, some may be waiting to lock up Gordon as well—I know I am).

I think

more people are relieved than happy because this was something that was expected from the beginning but was taking longer than a lot of people thought it would.

by JSlakov on Jul 29, 2008 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll be honest

Part of me thinks the Bulls overpaid to keep Deng. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he resigned, but I’m not sold that he’s worth that $11.6m per average or more if reports that say the deal is in excess of $70m are true. He has no superstar qualities about him, and while I understand superstars cost more than $70m/6, that’s money that’s not there to spend anymore. I am fearful he won’t live up to the deal and that his contract will become fairly difficult to trade as a result. I just have this general fear with perimeter players who aren’t supremely athletic and rely on moreso on skill and craft because I tend to believe those players plateau quicker in their careers. It’s not the same as a non-athletic post player who can still be a proficient bucket getter.

I’m happy he signed, don’t get me wrong, but my enthusiasm is a bit muted.

by messwiththebull on Jul 29, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I think Gordon's no longer a Bull

partially as a result of this but again, I think his negotiations will be sign-and-trade themed now.

by messwiththebull on Jul 29, 2008 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I keep trying not to think about the guard situation, because it's a mess.

I can’t see BG being happy playing a year on the QO with Lu having his deal done, and I have trouble seeing them get closer with Lu getting roughly $12 per. And they have to move somebody or just flat out not give one of the guards any minutes. But S&T’s are so tough and I’m not sure how much demand there is for BG on other teams at the money he’s wanting.

So basically I’m having nightmares about BG playing next year on the QO, the team not wanting to move anyone else because they figure he’s gone the next summer, so it’s like the end of last year where guys either don’t get enough minutes or get their minutes jerked around from game to game – I would think VDN can manage it better than B^#@)*, but if they’re all here it seems realistically unmanageable to me.

If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

I think the Bulls chose the RFA they were going to sign

and I hate to see Ben go (really, I like the guy) but I think the writing is on the wall. The team would rather have Hinrich, and that’s really what the choice now comes down to: Gordon or Hinrich.

by messwiththebull on Jul 29, 2008 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Which really sucks, imo, because I like both

and it bums me out that one of the two needs to go rather than Hughes because they’re tradeable and Larry’s not.

That automatic mid-range jumper is going nowhere

And he’s not going to start being a shitty defender for no reason. This was a smart move. Letting him walk next year for nothing would have been insane.

That automatic mid-range jumper might be close to as good as it gets

is what my fear is, not that his game regresses, but that it is near its plateau. I’m probably fretting over nothing but the guy’s game is skill based because the athleticism just isn’t there. So in that regard I guess I don’t expect his game to decline that much as he ages since he doesn’t rely on athleticism but I don’t expect it to improve that much. Just one fan’s thoughts.

by messwiththebull on Jul 29, 2008 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, in that instance

Now that his contract situation is cleared up, he can get back to shooting hundreds of threes every day. If he added that wrinkle, his game would open up. When he’s not doing that, I hope he’s working on post-moves to take advantage of his length.
Those two things click, and he’s worth every penny of $70M.

I hope you're right

I still have images of a small forward version of Rip Hamilton with a bit of a higher ceiling. But hey, maybe my $ value is off and that type of production is what warrants a $71m+/6 year deal, which admittedly could very well be the case. It’s not like Deng got borderline max money here.

That type of production certainly is worth this deal

i respect you alot..

but even if deng stays what he is…it could of been a lot worse. i mean if you look at the landscape of the nba, we could of done a lot worse. After all, he only got ‘troy murphy’ money. I kid, but I think (especially early on) that it would be counter-productive to NOT have someone of dengs caliber playing with Rose. Also, if he’s (and i think he is) as important to the development of this team (and rose… falling in love with parenthetical statements, apologies) we HAVE (HAD) to pay him this kind of money. We spent the last 3-4yrs talking him up.

I actually started to make a sarcastic “scrappy toughness” composite stat one time, based on Noc, to “prove” he was the toughest, scrappiest guy on the team – it had categories like falling down, fouling hard then looking around innocently and primal screams. But I was only doing it to tick off all the anti-stats people who were big on Noc and his “intangibles” so at some point I thought better of the whole thing.

of the Deng signing as being an indirect investment into Rose’s development. It’s for the greater good and I can dig that.

I don't think you'd mind as much if 2010 wasn't in the back of your head.

I really don’t. I mean, you were saying 9-12 the past couple of days, he’s w/in that, but since you were originally thinking 10 or 11, you’re fretting over 1.5 million. That’s really not that much money to ovepay a 23 year old playerthat’s had his sort of production. It’s just that you’re alredy in penny-pinching mode (I believe, at least subconsciously) for two years down the line.

I actually think this is good for 2010. I think Deng is paid just right (if not an extra year too many—that’s my concern), an if the bulls aren’t going to be under the cap, having a 25-year-old, versatile, near All-Star at 11 million is an awesome chip to use in a sign-and-trade.

by tyger1147 on Jul 29, 2008 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And if we could unload other salary...

Deng is a guy that superstars would like to play with, in my opinion. He’s a top-notch complementary piece, especially when you have Derrick Rose emerging as your PG. Not extending Deng would have been, simply put, disastrous.

Excellent point.

If Rose becomes a “star” and they sign another somehow, then Deng might be one of the best third options possible. He may not be good enough to be “the man”, but now they most certainly won’t be paying him like one.

by tyger1147 on Jul 29, 2008 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we are trying to become the poor man's Hornets/Jazz

This is exactly the route the Bulls should be taking. West, Chandler, and Peja will make 34 million combined next season. None of them are superstars, but you pay them good money because they complement the franchise player extremely well. Lu is someone that tons of teams would have been all over had he signed the tender next year, locking him up for the duration of his athletic prime was just a no-brainer.

I’m going to be intrigued as to how much Iguodola and Smith now get as the last big name RFAs out there.

I've said before

that I think Deng’s ceiling is Third Banana on a championship team. Well, hopefully we’ll get to see this come to life.

If Rose pans out, you have your 1 or 2, and if we can lure a superstar (calling D-Wade), the organization could be in pretty damn good shape in a few years.

Though my thoughts are semi-on-the-verge of the 2010 Plan thinking, I felt that no matter what we did, Deng had to be signed. Had to be.

People get so caught up in clearing cap space, when really, what superstar is going to come to a team that has Derrick Rose and a bunch of mediocres? Probably none of them.

that has *only* Derrick Rose and *then just* a bunch of mediocres

Please note these corrections – they get my point across better, hopefully.

We were going to look really, really bare in 2010 if D&G both walked in 2009. At the least, we have a great piece to go with Rose that will be here for a very long time.

And I haven’t even mentioned Tyrus in all of this, somehow…

Right.

The superuperstars make $20 m/y.
The overpaid All-Stars make 15-18.
The solidly paid All-Stars make 11-15.
The borderline All-Stars/breakout players make 9-13 or so.

At this price, Deng is a perfect signing. If he improves at all, the Bulls got him cheap. If not, they paid right.

I’m pretty confident that he can extend his range over the next few seasons. He’s got too good-looking of a jumper to not be capable of doing so.

I am pessimistic he can live up to an $80m deal. What I mean by “live up to” is that he will perform at a level that does not make his contract nearly untradable.

I’d be interested to see the actual terms.

Actually, this is a good sign for Gordo getting done too

Not much more than the per year from last year….and it is more per year than last year’s contract…which means that they might well do a similar increase for Gordo. Give Gordo the same increase % that Deng got over last year’s offer…and you get something around $11mil average for Gordo, which he should take, unless he really wants out of Chicago.

Could both contracts be structured so that first year is total around $17 for both? Yep.
I think it means something that they moved forward now too….I’m good on this…

luxury tax

i don’t understand why everyone is so worried about the exact luxury tax number. if its 71 mil, and the bulls are paying their players 73 mil in salary, then they only pay an extra 2 mil in luxury tax, right? i just don’t understand what the problem is with going a mil or 2 over the luxury tax, it really shouldn’t be that big of a deal. i’d understand if it was closer to 10 mil and they had to pay 10 mil extra for luxury tax, but if it’s only a few mil then they should be able to do it. i hope that gordon isn’t let go in order to save 2 million $ in luxury tax money, because that would just be stupid

By paying the luxury tax, you lose out on the windfall

Every team under the tax gets the average of everyone else’s tax dollars. The Bulls got like 4-5 million this year from that.

oh, thanks

i had no idea that was the case

by kite on Jul 29, 2008 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

it’s the James Dolan Charity drive.

But you’d hope Reinsdorf would allow Pax to sign Gordon and remake the rest of the roster, even leaving the team slightly over the tax before the season. Then during the season if the trade deadline rolls around and they’re winning, no big deal. If not, then just pawn off a couple contracts. As long as they’re not obscenely over it won’t be that impossible.

About time the Bulls take advantage of the insane amount of revenue they earn each year

A few million extra is not a whole lot to swallow (as The Chicago Bulls) when it involves re-signing your team’s best scorer. Get ‘er done, JR.

Ah, yes.

That’s pretty interesting. Thanks for the reminder.

Right. For example.

That extra 2 million they pay Gordon? They pay that, plus pay the 2 million to the league, plus they lose on the 4-5 million they’d otherwise get. So paying Gordon 2 mil is like paying him 8-9 million.

I’d rather put that onus on Nocioni or Hughes, but that’s how it’s looked at.

whoops

but even if deng stays what he is…it could of been a lot worse. i mean if you look at the landscape of the nba, we could of done a lot worse. We spent the last 3-4yrs talking him up.

by robingoodfellow on Jul 29, 2008 9:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

But Deng is mentally weak how will we survive AHHHHHH

Does this affect the possibility of retaining Gordon for a lower salary (10-11)?

It would have been nice to see Deng get signed for 60 million, but an extra 12 mill over 6 years doesn’t seem so bad. This gives Rose a consistent teammate to pass to, and shows Bulls fans that management is attempting to do this crazy little thing called building a playoff contender.

Brilliant!

Bout damn time Pax! This is a good deal because even if Deng does not become a superstar he will become an all-star. With a point GOD like Rose his number should improve, along with him improving his handles and shooting range. Deng will avg 18-20 ppg and 7-8 rpg during his career. Hughes makes about 12 mil a year and is not nearly as valuable as Deng on any team.

Listen Bulls fans if we didn’t pay deng 11.8 mil a year, there would have been 20 teams willing to pay him 13-14 mill a year next off-season. But, with this deal I think BG is gone we have too many guards and he wants too much money than we want to give him. It is obvious that Pax is trying to get another big, so I can see BG being trade bait. No matter who we get he has some big shoes to fill. Now all we need is a low-post scorer, and #7?

a bit of hyperbole in this post

but the point I got out of it and one that I’ve struggled to accept is that $11-$12m per is apparently the going rate for all-star SFs, not superstars. And while I don’t necessarily agree with it, it is what it is and even if it came down to the lower of cost or market, a team would still probably have to shell out $11m for an all-star caliber (Deng is borderline but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since he’s so young) SF. It is what it is, I just wish I saw more upside in Deng but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

You were right all along.

You’re doing a very good admirable job coming to terms w/ the signing and convincing yourself it will be for the best. I like it.

Deng will never be an All-Star

Given the landscape of awful NBA contracts, I think this is a good deal for the team, but Deng is a third option at best. If that’s true what do you pay the first and second best players on the team?

by Stay Chisel on Jul 29, 2008 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully max contracts

I would hope that Rose warrants one and I’m pretty sure D Wade would demand one.

Did I just assume D Wade will be a Bull in 2010? Why yes, it looks like I did.

excellent news...

Deng should v much be a core member of the team…and now he will be. It wouldn;t be the end of world if bg left, at least someone else will get a chance to handle the ball at the end of the game!

Now we can ...

trade Nocioni and someone else for some big, and re-sign Gordon.
Right? Right? ... Please? ...
Man, I wanted Gordon back, but this is probably the better way to go for the org as a whole … but really. Bleh. Hope the other deal gets done.

We should talk to Portland

Won’t happen, but get them to take Nocioni, throw in Hinrich and take back Webster or Outlaw and Pryzbilla.

You know, in a perfect world.

Great Signing

IMO this is an excellent signing. We paid a guy money he deserves and will not get any worse than he already is. We are not paying for his potential, because if we were, he would be maxed out, on his current production alone he is worth that money. As for BG, if there is anything we can do to improve our back court better than him, lets do it. If not, lets keep him. Just decide and get on with it…
