Gordon considering playing overseas
[From the FanShots. I do not endorse commenter mwtb's tough-guy talk. I am a big softie and want everyone overpaid and happy. -ed.]
Another negotiating ploy, no one's falling for it. I will laugh my @$$ off once the dollar starts to recover vs. the Euro.

“I will laugh my ass off”. Oh hahaha. Ben Gordon is trying to get fairly compensated for his work, hi-larious.

No that I think it's off-limits to find contract negotiations (or pretty much anything) funny
but why root against the team’s best players?
(Note: The Bulls cannot sign Monta Ellis for more. I looked into it)

I just find it funny how players are citing the stronger Euro but what happens when the dollar starts rallying? Do they opt out of their contracts and try to come back over to the U.S.?

The dollar has a long way to go, bro.
The rate now is 1(EUR) to 1.5741 (USD) but the dollar’s value has only been declining since the euro’s banknotes were introduced in 2002. Remember the euro was initially thought to be equal to the dollar! Anyways, at the rate it’s going anyone truly interested in making bank has to consider this. Especially someone with a business acumen and european passport like BG.
It’s not even about the Euro’s strength, it’s about the dollar’s weakness… The dollar is making the peso look sexy right about now.
Anyone signing a contract right now will get alot of money, asap. Even if the dollar starts to recover tomorrow (or with a new administration) it will take a long while before it’s equal. By that point, the money’s been in the bank collecting interest for years….

You know how a run is over when all the dumb money starts jumping on the bandwagon?
All these NBA players going long the Euro makes me want to short the hell out of it. All we need now is someone like Darius Miles saying he wants to be paid in Euros and then I’m going all in.

Not quite tax free...
Unless the club is paying them additional money to cover the taxes. If they retain American citizenship they still have to pay taxes just like the rest of us. The only difference is the form they use to file it.

He was probably asked
if he would consider it.
"Definitely, it’s a possibility now with the euro being so strong,", that sounds like an answer to a question. What’s he supposed to say? No? it’s not a possibility? We all know he’s one of the best spoken players in the NBA. So to say that he is just saying it cause the EURO is better is dumb.
Do they opt out of their contracts and try to come back over to the U.S.?
Yes, I read somewhere that they have opt-out clauses after each year. So that is definitely possible.

Rick Sund probably said the same thing
Pax damn well better take it seriously, even if it is a bluff. Shouldn’t they at least be pursuing sign-and-trade opportunities? If Gordon goes to Europe, that’s the worst possible scenario for the Bulls, because they’ll get no compensation. Gordon was the third freakin’ pick in the draft; you don’t let those guys go for nothing unless they’re complete busts.

Sund sounded like an idiot
saying afterwards something to the effect that he can only operate under the NBA’s rules, and since Childress wasn’t bid on by NBA teams he didn’t do anything wrong. Sadly, I expect similar mealy-mouthed crap from Pax/Reinsdorf.

dollar recovery will be staled indefinitely
after US government prints up 500 billion in new monopoly bills to bail-out freddy mac & fannie mae.
Euro money will continue to be attractive. I believe it will also begin to attract players a bit better than MLE, like Gordon.
Expect 1 euro = 2 dollars shortly. Now does that mean Childress contract becomes worth 40 million in US dollars? Gordon could sign a 2 year 20 million euro, potentially equaling 20 million annually in US dollar conversions.
If this is true, why wouldn’t he leave, after becoming a wealthy man, and then come back to the NBA two years later after being named Euro MVP?

Yes we can
History and economics says we can let them go, but better to find a way to increase their value for draft pick, or better overall player, or maybe they will elevate their games here. I just don’t feel they particularly neec to keep Gordon or Deng. Pay them what they’re worth for 3 years, okay. Pay them top dollar for 5-6 years, no.

Why wouldn't BG play a season in Europe?
Ben wants, and deserves, more money than the Bulls are willing to offer. There aren’t many sign and trade options out there for Ben, no team has cap space to sign him outright at the money he wants, and he consistently says, so to speak, “the team has too many guards”.
Doesn’t this make BG a prime candidate to play in Europe? He can shoot and score. He’s an undersized SG, but these players are well represented in Europe. They won’t play the tempo Ben prefers, but he would be able to create his shot the way he likes. He signs a similar deal to Childress with player options to leave after one season or two seasons to return to the NBA with a more attractive array of teams with cap space.
The Bulls will still own his rights, but if successful in Europe Ben can hold the option of returning to play there for as long as he wishes.

Okafor's deal should be the final nail that caps negotiations at $12m
I can’t see how D&G can argue that they should be paid more than Ellis an Okafor. $9m-$12m should be the high and low end, I’m thinking.
And I don’t think Ben could play point in Europe, Mars, or even in a bizarro world NBA. Remember those really bouncy superballs? That’s what it looks like BG is dribbling when he plays the point.
You know BG reads BaB. I’m pretty sure he does. Sorry about all the heat, Ben. I root for you when you’re in a Bulls uni.

This seems to put an end to the guessing of what Deng/BG could be maxed out at
Okafor may not be a superstar, but he’s a legit double-double big man, and that’s quite valuable considering he’s only 25. Deng’s offer should max out at this same level, I can’t see how he doesn’t view it as fair considering what the other young talented players around the league have been netting.

Just speculating like the other 1000000 comments here
I (and it seems most management types) would rather pay 72 million to a solid big man, than a perimeter player. However, I still think 12 million a year for Deng is what he’s worth considering how the majority of us feel he will bounce back rather nicely from last season and possibly improve with Rose as a teammate.
Who knows what his agent has been telling him what is a “fair” offer from the Bulls. I think most would agree that anything in the 60-70 million range over 6 years is pretty levelheaded for a player of Deng’s talent.

More and more I'm thinking that D&G
do think those deals are fair but maybe the Bulls are indeed lowballing these two guys. Just from the articles that have come out over the past few days and BG’s various interviews. I think BG really wants to resign and would jump at last year’s deal in a heartbeat. I don’t know where Deng stands but he’s been pretty silent on the matter.

The difference is average-at-best years, and Rose
The 2006-08 Bulls have peaked. As far as the future goes, it is with Rose, and for the right deal, I am sure they would trade anybody else. This team is no longer centered around Luol Deng or Ben Gordon. I would gladly overpay them for 2 to 3 years, but I can’t sign them to big deals for more than what I think I can trade for what I need in the future.

Gordon Thinks He Should Be the Highest Paid Bull
The Bulls remain far apart in negotiations with guard Ben Gordon, also a restricted free agent. Gordon’s agent, Raymond Brothers, has told the Bulls that Gordon should be the highest-paid player on the team because he has led the team in scoring each of the last three seasons. The Bulls aren’t expected to guarantee up to $80 million over a maximum six years for Gordon, so if negotiations continue to stall, the sides might pursue a sign-and-trade deal. Gordon would have to approve such a move. Gordon also has strongly considered signing the team’s qualifying offer of $6.4 million for next season, after which he would be an unrestricted free agent. —Chicago Sun-Times
If this is true, then I am surprised. If Gordon’s agent believes that, then I think he has an unrealistic view of his client’s worth. Gordon wouldn’t garner any where near $80 million from anyone in the league, even not the team he’s been successful with.
