Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Former Hawks swingman Josh Childress has signed with Olympiakos of Greece, a three-year, fully guaranteed contract worth far more than the $20 million initially believed to be his prize.

Did Paxson lose even more leverage?

If they lose Josh Smith, too do they go hard after Deng? They’d be roughly $15 million under the cap (no sign-and-trade!!!) and having just lost 2 out of 3 of their SF/PF rotation w/ only Marvin Williams left.

I guess one could say this puts more pressure on the Hawks to sign Smith.

But if he knows that, how much is he asking for now? Maybe this only hurts Atlanta and doesn’t help hurt Chicago. Unless there is more at play for Smith than just money.

wouldn't Gordon be a better fit?

the Hawks have experience relegating someone as ‘6th man’ who doesn’t deserve it…

Kidding, they could actually start Gordon with Joe Johnson, though I’m not sure if they’ve given up making Johnson a primary ballhandler.

Deng or Gordon... whatever.

Although the Johnson-Deng-Williams-Horford combo would be ideal for FreeDarko’s apositionality.

also I'm not sure on the rules for this

but I believe that if the Hawks want to keep the restricted rights to Childress when he returns to the NBA (which they have in perpetuity), then his cap hold stays and they can’t get under the cap this offseason.

though the more I think about it

Atlanta shouldn’t be seen as able to do anything proactive.

it's been reported

that the Hawks only keep his rights for 2 years. Thus, if it’s a three-year deal (as is being reported) w/ Olympiakos, Childress can come back as a 28-year-old unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2011. You have to hand it to the Hawks: anybody can screw up a draft or two but it takes a special franchise to turn an above-average 25-year-old restricted free agent into a completely worthless commodity.

The Bulls will try and one-up that, if it's any consolation

thanks for the info on the rights question.

Paxson's bad timing yet again

where were these billionaire Euroleague owners last offseason when Nocioni was on the market??

You mean to bid up the Bulls eventual contract offer to him?

Lucky for us we’re not paying Noc $10 mil per year!

heh

Paxson was chasing them all away waving a broomstick at them screaming “you won’t take my Noc away without a fight!”

by NormVanBeer on Jul 23, 2008 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I can only imagine Paxson chiding

the European teams for leaking info to the press. “That’s not how we operate, we have a process. It’s unfortunate for us and Nocioni that these offers are leaked as fact when they’re not. But that’s part of the job and I’m accountable for that”

Can Stern just contract the Hawks already?

A team that has been given so many chances to draft in the lottery and build a contender still hasn’t had a .500 season in 9 seasons. End the misery.

Either that or just force Paul Allen to buy the Bulls
