Nene or K-Mart?
http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/nuggets/archives/2008/07/will_iverson_be.html
I was just checking out this article about Denver's possible interest in trading AI away and they mention that:
They'd also trade Kenyon Martin or Nene, if anybody wanted either. And owner Stan Kroenke would be willing to deal the Rocky Mountains if he owned them and it would keep him from paying the luxury tax.
I think Nene could certainly fit in as a center for us, not sure K-Mart would fit in anywhere, but what do you guys think? Should the Bulls be talking to the Nuggets?

e. 129 for KMart, 80 for Nene
but that says very little about Nene’s ability…he’s back to form now and would be better at center than anything else we have there…

He's also recovering from cancer.
I feel for the guy, but he was injury prone before the cancer. I like his talents, and he looks like the type of guy we need (not only athletic and young, but with some bulk), and I even floated the idea of trading for him earlier this year, but the only way I want to see him as a Bull is with an unguaranteed contract, and he won’t take that when he could get better and guaranteed money somewhere else.

no thanks
they’d want expiring contracts, I’m sure and Nene has a much worse deal than anyone on our team.

gotta feel for nene
since the poor guy is in cancer remission, but all the more reason i don’t want to be spending 10 mil on the guy.

If there was a decent health report,
I’d think hard about taking a chance on Nene. He’s a huge risk, but he fits what the team needs very well. He’s the type of on the ball defensive player that the Bulls need up front to play with Tyrus that’s hard to find. He’s a strong defender with the quickness to defend pick and rolls and the size to defend the post. Offensively he can run the floor, rack up a ton of dunks, and score a little bit when isolated in the post. If he’s healthy in the playoffs he can be a difference maker. It would throw any hope of a 2010 free agent signing out the window, but I don’t have any great expectations for 2010 anyway. I’d certainly rather have Nene than Gooden this season. The rest of the contract is the huge risk, but I’d be inclined to take the risk on a guy with Nene’s ablities.

All true
but for that money, why not go after Okefor? Supposedly his talks have broken off with the Bobcats; he’s a better defender, rebounder and scorer. Same kinda health risk as well.

The big difference is that Okafor is going to cost a lot more. He's likely looking
for at least Andrew Bogut money with a five year commitment. He would also going to cost something of value in terms of assets in a sign and trade because at the bare minimum the base year compensation issue has to be dealt with. Charlotte is cheap and a disaster of a franchise, but I doubt they give away their one valuable player cheaply. The extra two years and the extra money going to Okafor is additional risk to take on.
And Okafor isn’t quite as good a fit as Nene. Nene is actually the better scorer between the two, mainly because he’s more athletic and he can put the ball on the floor. But more importantly he changes ends much better than Okafor. Nene is a factor on the fast break in a way Okafor simply isn’t. Okafor is a better overall defender, but most of his value comes as a help defender. As the on the ball defender that the Bulls need, Nene is very comparable. And Nene obviously doesn’t compare as a rebounder. I’d rather take what is likely a three year 30 million chance on Nene than bet 5 year 70 million plus other assets on Okafor. Plus, I think the chances of the Bulls being able to acquire Okafor are pretty remote anyway.

If the Bulls end up throwing loyalty to the wind,
they should take a wad of cash and drop it in the lap of either Okafor or Josh Smith. They should specifically overpay for either one of these guys, so that their current teams don’t match. Then they should sign one of their own RFA’s to somewhat of a shorter deal than he’s asking for, while letting the other one walk.
This would produce a pretty good lineup, and the net result would be like trading one of our RFA’s for either Okafor or Smith.
Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he… ?
