Bulls Announce Summer League Roster

[From the FanPosts. There's reasons to have all these rotation players in the summer league, but it also has me expecting them to win by 40 each night. Otherwise my hemming and/or hawing will start to increase. -ed.]

The full list is here.

Interesting additions: JamesOn Curry, who apparently hasn't pissed away his NBA career [zing! -ed.], Cedric Simmons, a former lottery mid first-round pick with good size and athleticism, Will Daniels, who's a good athlete and had some pretty good numbers at Rhode Island.  Interesting omission: the Swiss Mister.

Still, with Noah, Tyrus, and Rose, we may be looking at 3/5 the starting lineup and the debut of VDN.  Should be exciting.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Tyrus will start over Gooden?

Either way, I’m glad that he’s playing – it can only help his chemistry with Rose and Noah.

As long as TT gets a consistent 25-30 minutes per game - more if his performance merits it -

I don’t care if he starts or comes off the bench. There should be enough minutes between Gooden, TT, Noah, and Gray (minimal minutes) if nobody else (read: Nocioni) plays any minutes up front.

Yeah, as I said yesterday, I really hope small ball (aka Deng/Noc at the 4 goes by the wayside).

Investing in Gooden

doesn’t really get us anywhere. I expect Gooden will get good playing time, but considering Tyrus started early on last season as a second year player I don’t see why they wouldn’t go with him this season after all the evidence we’ve had of him maturing and spending extra time on basketball during the off season, making appearances, etc. Gooden’s contract will be moved, probably not this year but the next. Tyrus needs to live up to expectations this year to keep pace with the rest of the team and what better way to do that than a show of confidence and a starting slot? I consider it his to lose, not Gooden’s.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Yes, well we all consider it to lose...but guess what?

We’re not the coaches :\

Not Me

It’s easily Gooden’s job to loose. His low post game is way more effecitve than Tyrus’ and his Joe Smith-esque baseline jumper is knockdown. Do you guys remember one of his first games at home in chicago he hit 5-5 FG?. He’s a walking double double. I wouldn’t mind tyrus starting but i don’t expect it early in the season. I can’t knock Drew, i think he has a good attitude because he’s happy to be in the CHI and he’s started on a team that went to the final’s 2 season’s ago. I know we all want to see Tyrus turn into shawn kemp but i’m tired of waiting for all this ‘potential’ to flourish.

by AFireInside661 on Jul 2, 2008 8:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe

if Tyrus watches more from the bench like the last two years he’ll be a better player faster. Yup.

The point was that we all would have Tyrus starting.

I was saying that I don’t necessarily think VDN will feel the same way (at least at first), considering Gooden is the more established player. Not that this reasoning makes any sense with the current state of our franchise, but whatever.

Has Gooden's name even come up lately?

All I hear VDN talk about are the young guys. Gooden isn’t in the long term plans and as it seems VDN has been charged with getting our young guys reaching their potential I just don’t see why he would bring Gooden out as some starter-crutch to start the season off. I don’t think VDN will go the route of our interim coach and try to win (well, actually lose) by using the vets as crutches.

Good(en) to keep in mind

Lost in a lot of the talk about Rose and TT and where Hinrich goes is that Gooden has a very nice contract to work with. I’ve said all along that Hinrich isn’t going anywhere this summer cause Rose can’t handle majore minutes from the get-go. Now, assuming he plays well, maybe we’ll move Hinrich at the all-star break and that’s where Gooden could come into play.
He’s a $7M expiring contract and HE’S A GOOD PLAYER. No, I don’t want to see him TT crowded out of the rotation, but Gooden is a very good bargain and packaging him with Hinrich could be a great prize.

by OldSkoolSloan on Jul 2, 2008 9:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

gooden's contract will be moved not this year but next year??

does anyone know the market value of a free agent power forward…..? he’s long gone bud, play chi’s future all-star tyrus!!

by yetti on Jul 2, 2008 11:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Um...

Isn’t this the last year for Gooden’s contract?

Step 1 - Win lottery. Step 2 - Hire a coach. Step 3 - Win.

by Lt.Dan on Jul 3, 2008 7:32 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I wouldn't mind Gooden starting since he actually has tons of talent

Luckily for Tyrus, Gooden possesses the mental strength of Lamar Odom. He’s a solid player that deserves some playing time, but his inconsistent play coupled with the rise of Tyrus Thomas to uber mega ultra hyper star this season will be a natural change.

(I can dream, no?)

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 2, 2008 8:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

In one of David Thorpe's chats, when talking about Thomas...

...he said flat-out: “Gooden is the starter.” Now, obviously, Thorpe’s opinion doesn’t count towards the Bulls decision-making, but maybe he was talking to Tyrus about the situation, and he understands that he might not start. That was after the lottery but before VdN, I think. Some might think establishing post-play to start the game is important. I’d rather start the game running and gunning and get the other team on its heels.

Who knows? Only VdN knows. I hope.

by tyger1147 on Jul 2, 2008 9:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The more of these Thorpe chats I read,

the more I really feel like half the stuff he says is pulled out of thin air. What I’m saying is – even though he works with a lot of our guys and we love him for that – I think everything he says needs to be taken with a grain of salt, kind of like you said.

by Illini15 on Jul 2, 2008 9:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed.

And I bring it up more to point out that if he thinks Gooden is the starter, then he might be telling Thomas the same thing. Not that Thomas has to be completely babysat, but if someone is telling him he has to “win” the job from Gooden, all the better.

by tyger1147 on Jul 2, 2008 9:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thorpe pisses me off because

I feel like he knows a lot, but he never really wants to share a whole lot. Most of his answers in the chat are ridiculously short and he never explains anything. I’d much rather read Chad Ford or JA Adande at this point.

Also,

Will Gooden throw a fit if Tyrus starts? Or will he sit tight since he’s probably only here for a year at max? That’s what I’m worried about.

...........same with Hughes, only 2 years instead of 1 (blech).

I don't think Gooden will throw a fit if he doesn't start

He’s always been a jolly guy, and if he plays well he will get more minutes anyways.

This is certainly what you'd hope for.

Which pair would you like best?

Thomas/Noah
Gooden/Noah
Thomas/Gooden

Does it matter?

by tyger1147 on Jul 2, 2008 9:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It really doesn't matter, me thinks.

As long as they all play about the same amount of minutes (and Gray gets none unless he’s needed for extra fouls).

by Illini15 on Jul 2, 2008 9:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If Gooden is going to start, I'd much rather have Gooden

play with Thomas. Bulls fans have over rated Gooden as a scorer. He’s a guy with 51.5% career TS% and he wasn’t any better than that in his 18 games with the Bulls. He
doesn’t go to the FT line anymore than Deng does. When Gooden plays with Thomas both of their shot attempts go down a little(10 FGA/40 min for Gooden). When Gooden plays with Noah, Gooden shot attempts shoot up way too high and Noah’s go down (18 FGA). Gooden’s best offensive asset is offensive rebounding. Posting him up a bunch is fool’s gold.

by Scotter on Jul 2, 2008 11:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I could go with that. Gooden is the only guy on our team who has some decent bulk

...that’s not Aaron Gray.

i’m excited about the summer league. the touchest game will probably the first one, so if we can get that one we’ll probably win all the other games.(which means nothing, but is a good look into the future.)

Dissapointed

Am I the only one disappointed the games won’t be open to the public??

Would have liked to see the ex-Knick Randolph Morris on our squad…seems he has some talent and legit size (6-11)

the Las Vegas Summer league and sold tickets.

by Jbonelli on Jul 3, 2008 3:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The gym they play in is probably smaller than your high school's.

The few spectators there (usually head coaches and/or GM’s, etc.) are standing all along the out-of-bounds line.

by tyger1147 on Jul 4, 2008 12:20 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ugh...

...I just shudder when I see “Knick”, “Randolph” and “on our squad” in the same sentence…

On a more topical note, I’m going to take a stab at the likely Summer league starting 5:

Rose PG
Curry SG (poor man’s BG)
Thomas PF
Nichols SF (poor man’s Deng)
Noah C

Looks like 3/5 of the starters we all hope to see come the start of the season. Is anyone else as excited as my nipples are indicating?

by Bulldozer on Jul 3, 2008 3:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

So it's his fault

Isiah Thomas was the Coach/GM…its a gamble, a summer team roster, and it seems he can become a better player than Grey..

by Jbonelli on Jul 3, 2008 3:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually

my response was referencing Zach Randolph (and the rumors that the Bulls were looking at him last off-season). Sorry, guess I was too subtle.

by Bulldozer on Jul 3, 2008 5:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thabo update...

He left for Switzerland so I guess that’s the reason he’s not playing. I know he does a camp over there, though I do not believe he’s planning on spending as much time in Europe this year as he did last summer (I read it somewhere earlier in the summer).

by smash! on Jul 3, 2008 1:08 PM CDT   0 recs

Another Thabo Update(sighting)

When did he leave for Switzerland? I saw him at the Whole Foods in Winnetka on the 4th of July. I don’t think I ever realized how tall he was(I mean, I knew how tall he was, but was still surprised when I walked past him)..

by Shot on Ehlo on Jul 7, 2008 10:09 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm glad Del Negro is coaching the summer league team

I’ve never heard of a head coach coaching summer league before, but I can’t think of a better way to start the season than to give him a full week to work almost exclusively with Rose, Tyrus, and Noah.

by YaoPau on Jul 4, 2008 1:31 AM CDT   0 recs

I saw a pic of Gray working out over the offseason,

and I have to say I was completely shocked. He … he wasn’t fat. Maybe I was hallucinating, or it was a different guy, but I think it was Gray?
Should be interesting to see if he shows up to camp like that. And then stays that way throughout the year, right? Doughnuts: his bane. Or some other food, but I dunno. I like doughnuts.
Mmm.

by Prevenge on Jul 4, 2008 2:00 AM CDT   0 recs

I would have a hard time believing that too

but if Aaron has dropped the weight and gained a little explosiveness, he’s got a lot of skill and size. And he at least tries. I see him as a very good back-up center. I’d be surprised if he’s more than that, but hey – Brad Miller was undrafted and has had some good years.
