Around SBN: Phillies Beat Lowe, Dodgers Bar-right-arrows

Settled a bit for his jumper, but overall he was dynamic. Didn't like his body language. But he's a beautiful kid. Called me just minutes before this chat to discuss some game tape he's studying. He's going to love Vinny.

Rest of Bulls stuff

“Antonio (Rio de Janeiro): I’l almost sure Deng stays in Chicago… What about Gordon?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Both are up in the air.

Harry Manback (Portland, OR): If things get dicey with Chicago and Deng, does it make sense for Portland to pursue him in a sign-and-trade, or do they need more of a distance shooter at the 3?

SportsNation David Thorpe: I can’t think of a better fit for both parties. “

Thats all I remember that was Bulls stuff…

Why do people ask Thorpe

about pending transactions? His arena is scouting and development. Ask Stein and the egeeks about transactions.

Thorpe said he didn't like TT's body language?

Then called him a beautiful kid? Odd description. I mean, I agree that his body language is off-putting. If you read into stuff like that, which I tend to, it drives me crazy. In interviews, he’s so disinterested and constantly looking anywhere but to the camera/reporter. He just looks pissed and bothered. But Thorpe’s obviously talking about his language in the game, so I wonder exactly what he means. Was he callus on D or disinterested in huddles? I didn’t pick up on any of that…

Thorpe's talking about the swagger on offense

Thomas still doesn’t appear to have some with his back to the basket. He shows it when he elevates for jumpers, but the back to the basket stuff has a long way to go.

The best game I remember where Tyrus’ swagger was in full display was the game last season at Golden State where he basically held the lead for the Bulls to take one.

And

the last game of last season against Toronto.

Thorpe's comments (supposedly one of Tyrus biggest supporters)?

is analogous to

at least she has a nice personality

Tyrus love (or potential) starting to wane?

why use words like dynamic and beautiful kid, when we need sombody who will put the ball in the basket. What do these words mean? Maybe we’ll have to wait for a more complete commentary on the assessment of Tyrus, or just watch his progress (or lack of) this upcoming season?

Oh, come on now.

Stop reading so much into a comment that Thorpe basically put zero thought into. I think you’re reaching here.

I tend to think Thorpe chooses his Tyrus descriptors quite deliberately.

The twin gripes Skiles got the media talking about last year were that Tyrus was somehow too lazy to run up the court and that he was surly—Thorpe counters both these in one casual-seeming reply.

well

I definitely agreed he settled too much for his jumper as he basically played like a wing player in Orlando, plus some great blocks. However his body language seemed fine for summer league.

by JSlakov on Jul 17, 2008 12:04 AM CDT   0 recs

He might not have been "settling" for his jump shot

It’s summer league, it’s not about winning. He probably wanted to work on his jumper in a game-like situation with opponents challenging it, etc. Unlike when he’s probably usually working on it alone in the gym.

by fundamentallysound on Jul 17, 2008 8:21 AM CDT   0 recs

I think he looked fine

I liked that he shot a ton of jumpers, he could use the practice, and in some games it looked very consistent. He’s not going to be posting up anyone during games, so a face-up jumper coupled with his athleticism could do wonders for his game.

agreed, this is what I was trying to say. He needs to work on that J to add another dimension to his game.

Let him worry about posting up after he’s bulked up a bit. Right now, his advantage is his lateral quickness and foot speed, having a face up jumper would allow him to take better advantage of that.

What say You about Thorpe dissing Rose? from his blog:

Are Marc Gasol and Rudy Fernandez for real? Seriously better than Rose and Mayo?

David Thorpe: Yes

You have Rose listed as 7th best rookie. I realize that he was hurt for the majority of the summer league, but he did look good even if though his teammates had trouble converting on his dishes. how is the 7th best rookie the only one to be invited to scrimmage the olympic squad…

David Thorpe: C’mon Mark, do some thinking on your own.

Were you joking about Gasol and Fernandez being better than Rose and Mayo? Come on Dave.

David Thorpe: Not better in terms of talent, per se. Better chance to put up better numbers? Yes. This season.

Are we Blogabullers deluding ourselves by viewing him through Rose colored glasses? Some rookie PG’s have performed spectactularly in the summer leagues. I hope Rose’s less than stellar performances can be explained by his being at the beginning of the learning curve and he has a reputation of being a very fast learner.

I think the most significant comment by Thorpe regarding TT is
“He’s going to LOVE Vinney.”

As Stacy “Burger” King’s recent fan post pointed out in correlating the Bull’s performance last season with Maslow’s need hierarchy theory, their clowinish coaches stifled the teams and TT’s esteem needs by yelling, disrespecting them, failing to develop their innate talents, discouraging them and eventually taking any fun out of the games because of their glaring ineptitude and piss poor attitudes which led to near mutiny at times.

Self-esteem needs according to Maslow on a lower scale includes the need for the respect of others, for status, fame, glory, recognition, attention, reputation, appreciation, dignity, even dominance. The higher form involves self respect which is harder to lose since it doesn’t rely on others (Ayn Rand) demonstrating itself by possessing feelings as confidence, competence, achievement, and mastery, ala Micheal Jordan.

Under negative conditions the players regressed to lower need levels, focusing primarily on individual goals at the expense of the team with no motivation, direction or “Love”. Vinney and his new staff offer the Bulls and Tyrus a fresh start. and John Lennon nailed it when he wrote “All You Need is Love’. The Baby Bulls will go out of their way to earn both the love and respect of VDN and his posse, once again riding herd on their opposition this season. I remain a “hesitant” optimist, assuming Paxson makes some smart moves before too long.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

He didn't really diss Rose or Mayo
: Not better in terms of talent, per se. Better chance to put up better numbers? Yes. This season.

This season, yeah Rudy could do well because he’s on a team that seems destined to win a ton of games and make the playoffs. I don’t know how Gasol will do better than Mayo, they’re on the same team, and I know nothing about Gasol.

As for Rose, it’s established he will struggle in the early goings of the season, it’s inevitable. Durant looked horrible last season until he figured out some things, namely how to make a jumpshot. I have faith Rose will figure it out within a season on how to get his teammates involved in the game, while still getting some points for himself. It’s important he doesn’t fall into the trap of deferring to his teammates all the time, nor should he try and take over every game on his own as well.
