Stein: Reinsdorf handling Deng negotiations personally
Stein reports from Vegas summer league:
Not totally sure yet how to interpret this one, but sources say that Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is personally handling contract negotiations with Deng and his new agent (Jason Levien) after Reinsdorf informed Bulls GM John Paxson that he wanted to directly negotiate with the Deng camp along with Bulls director of player personnel Gar Forman.
Bulls tidbits are otherwise scarce so far beyond what we covered recently about Deng's fellow restricted free agent Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich. While it is widely presumed that Chicago will soon trade Hinrich after drafting Derrick Rose with the No. 1 overall pick, sources maintain that there is some sentiment in the Bulls organization to keep Hinrich -- a Reinsdorf favorite -- and play him at shooting guard alongside Rose while banking on getting something good for Gordon in a sign-and-trade.
Don't know how I should feel about this -- my initial reaction is that I would expect the Bulls front office to behave in a more coordinated fashion, particularly after what happened with D'Antoni earlier this summer -- but wanted to get it posted to get everyone's thoughts.
The other tidbit to note in this report is that it sounds like the Clips are interested in a number of "restricteds," including Luol.

I'm not sure why this is news to Stein, or anyone
Reinsdorf handles a lot of contract negotiations. It’s not necessarily a sign that negotiations are going poorly, and it’s entirely possible that Pax and Reinsdorf are dividing forces to get Deng and Gordon done now.
A little bothersome for Pax...
Is anyone concerned that we’ve heard Gar Forman’s name more in the last month than we have in the last five years? While it’s true that Reinsdorf has frequently handled or led negotiations (MJ’s one year deals, counseling Pip on the drawbacks of the long extension he signed in the early 90s, Ben Wallace, etc.), this latest piece of information only reaffirms the notion that Paxson is working with one hand tied behind his back.
While Kobe was probably never on the table, Gasol’s not a #1 option and KG wasn’t on the table when Pax was ready to buy, his reticence in pulling off the ‘blockbuster’ may be borne out of the fact that he does not yield near the authority of other GMs in the league. With the insistence in staying outside of the luxury tax (which I agree with until we identify and pay the star that puts this franchise on the map again) and doing our due diligence, it is clear that we might be missing opportunities.
I just hope that we have been thinking about what to do if LAC offers Deng 13 million…
if the Clippers offer Deng 13 million, sign and trade Deng and Sefolosha/Simmons/Gray for Kaman
Mark Cuban said most of the execs in the NBA have to get ownership to sign off on everything. I doubt Paxson is working under unique conditions, and hesitating to lock up Deng and Gordon last summer certainly looks better in light of 2007-08.
what is kaman's contract?
Plus I don’t think that the clips are going to part with kaman. He’s currently their only post presence.
On top of that – I still think I’d rather have deng than kaman on our roster.
point is the Bulls can match any offer, then trade Deng if they don't want to pay him.
If a team is going to bid on an RFA, they’re probably willing to trade for him. Kaman makes 9.5 million in 2008-09.
There's no way the Clips would get rid of Kaman.
I don’t really see why they would want Deng anyways; they already have Thornton at the 3. J-Smoove should be the guy they’re after the hardest.

This isn't shocking news
Reinsdorf has personally negotiated countless times with his players. He hates when agents try to play games and get the players to resent management, and prefers to get negotiations done directly so there’s less bullshit to deal with.

i was referring to the way
he deals with people when it comes to contract negotiations…i’d really love to have a free spending owner (easy to say since its not my money)
Reinsdorf code of ethics in negotiations
seems hot fused, absolute vacuum loyalty with little tolerance for the other parties outside open market interests? If he perceives he’s slighted or outbidded, he quickly condemns publically the characters of the other party and closes the door for no further negotiations?
???
And he differs from other owners......how?

Richard DeVos (Magic)
for one…. Dolan (Knicks) for two … Jerry Buss (Lakers) for three.
I believe each has given a single player a multi-year contract >= 69 million within the last two decades?
And Reinsdorf hasn't given out multiyear contracts?
Why does it matter that they are over 69 million? Dolan and DeVos have made some horrendous decisions (at least approved their GM’s bad decisions) over the past few years. I prefer Reinsdorf and his frugality, because he has shown over time that he will break the bank occasionally.

69 million? just an arbitrary number?
Still Jerry approved nearly a combined 90 million for Kirk and Noc who questionally aren’t bonifided starters in the NBA. Just his favorites? Oh, yes the Bulls are a for profit organization and not necessary in business to win an NBA Championship!
And a combined 120 million for Wallace and Chandler. Wallace was hyped only because of the team success in Detroit, and really never did anything in his career to warrant this exceptionally high, but not too high (frugal) contracts that Jerry gives out to marginal players. Why Wallace in the first place? It happen so fast, Jerry was probably bidding against no one for Ben Wallaces services other than ESPN hype?
Now is Deng the player you invest nearly 70 million in? Well if you judge using numbers comparing Kirk, Noc, Wallace and Chandler as benchmarks then Deng is signed yesterday.
Fair enough.
I do agree (in a roundabout way) w/ the first and third paragraphs. Well, kind of sort of. But Reinsdorf/Paxson was bidding against Detroit, not just himself.
All I know is we better re-sign deng...
I don’t care as much about gordon.
I wouldn’t be too mad if the front office adds no one else through trade and free agency, as long as we re-sign deng.
I'd be pretty pissed if they just let Gordon walk away for nothing
The goal is to get better. Letting Gordon walk just makes the team worse, and puts more pressure on Kirk and Thabo to be efficient scorers.

Well
if Gordon goes, we probably can get JJ (Magic). He can score like Gordon, approximately the same height, he’s most likely cheaper, no future in Orlando and his defense being about equal?
Comparing J.J. to BG is like
putting a silk hat on a pig. Please cease.
Reinsdorf directly negotiating is not new and is no surprise.

J.J. Redick can score like Gordon?
Since when?

There are 3 responses to you already
But, no JJ is nowhere near the scorer BG is. If a team that led the league in 3 pointers last season doesn’t have a use for him, why would the Bulls want him?

Orlando is difference than Chicago
Why Chicago? Fans, Attendance. JJ has smaller ears than Kirk’s. Cheaper Price.
JJ could provide offense off the bench, with Rose drive and kick ability, screen and roll with Deng, etc.
Sure maybe JJ scoring will not to the tune of Ben, but Gordon numbers have been inflated due to the anemic Bulls offense of late
as long as you're correcting--"Orlando is different from Chicago."

Different from is standard English.
Different than is nonstandard.
Than is used with the comparative or superlative degrees. “

JJ's .395 didn't help Magic achieve this rating in 2007?
Name all the players on the Bulls who posted a better 3pt pct? and by how much? And who isn’t expecting 12-15 million per year?
or
any Bulls guard combined shooting best JJ’s .444, not expecting 12-15 million per year?
Oh, didn't see the expecting 12-15 million a year.
Drat. I don’t think he’s expecting that much, anyways, and he won’t get it from ANY team either way.
All J.J. can do is shoot, though. There are other options than someone whose presense is nullified by the guy guarding him actually guarding him.
JJ is being run out of Orlando because he sucks.
Why would we want to pick him up?

If he couldn't find any PT
in that horrendous Orlando backcourt, then things probably aren’t looking too great for his future in the league…

Not negotiating a long-term deal doesn't mean he necessarily walks.
We sign him to the QO and he stays for a year, and then we could sign him next year under his Bird rights if we wanted (and he wanted). I think. Although if we can’t get something done now, he probably won’t want to stick around for much longer than he has to (feeling slighted, etc.)
JJ Redick
is the best pure shooter in the history of basketball. It says so in the Better Basketball video that they always are pushing on NBA TV. If its on TV, it must be true. Right?
it is doesn't cost
$65 million, but can score off the bench, and can fill seats cheaper. Then I might agree with Reinsdorf and believe the Better Basketball Video
On the serious side
JJ Redick is the type of role player off the bench you attempt to secure. Not for a big contract, but a bench role player giving him more than the average 8 minutes the Magic gave.
Sure, he has limits in his game (Gordon doesn’t?), but his shooting percentages are about equal with Ben Gordon. Given a bit more playing time and shown appreciation, he could become special in the mode of Steve Kerr or Craig Hodges.
I’m not looking for a star, but looking for the Bulls to establish clearly defined roles for players.
Ben Gordon thinks he should be a first option on a NBA team? This is a problem.
JJ has been beaten down, and understands he’s not a first option in the NBA. College is over
If BG is a liability on defense, then what do we call JJ?
An uber-liability? A foreclosure? The reason Orlando didn’t play him was not because of his shooting.

Foreclosure, hahaha. Nice.
Rec for you.

J.J....
...is yet another in a long, long line of players who were awesome in the college game, but are simply not a good fit for the pro game.
You don’t even have to look past his own college team to find examples of this: Danny Ferry, Christian Laettner, Chris Carrawell, Cherokee Parks…in fact, I’m pretty sure I’d rather still have Duhon than JJ.
laettner wasn't near as good in the pros as in college, but he was still plenty good.
At least in my opinion.
sure he was
as a role player…but if the college game were a sure predictor of NBA success then Laettner would have been a perennial All Star.
remember...
... that Laettner was on the Dream Team
He wasn' even a NBA player in 1992, they picked one college player to be on that team
I was a multiple time all star throughout my little league career. Won 5 championships- 4 in a row- thats more in a row than MJ… (kenwo4life@aol.com)

And they picked him over Shaq...
I HATE Shaq, but he could at least play at that time…
Laettner is arguably the greatest player in NCAA history....
It really wasn’t that big of a deal. I think it was more of a travesty that Isiah Thomas was left of the squad.

Bulls need shooters
and I’m not totally against getting someone like JJ Redick cheap if the Bulls don’t bring back BG. Looking at their roster there aren’t a lot of guys who can knock down outside shots. With Rose driving he’s going to need shooters out at the arc to get it to. Kirk, Thabo, and Noc aren’t exactly high percentage 3 pt shooters. There could be a role for someone like JJ on this Bulls team.
In defense of JJ's Defensive
If Ben Gordon was in the backcourt with Jameer Nelson it also would be a bad defensive backcourt. (or Foreclosure ..condemed property) Nelson looks about 5’ 8” and is always posted up, now JJ heights that liability further when he’s on the court with Nelson.
Now put JJ in backcourt with Thabo or Rose (and for that matter Kirk), and JJ fills the same role as Gordon, but now the current Bulls guards aren’t a defensive liability as Nelson, therefore JJ isn’t as exposed.
Just because you are tall doesn't mean you can't be posted up
If that was true, Corey Maggette would be an excellent defender. Despite being 6’7 and built like a running back, he still sucks at defense.

This has me nervous
Reinsdorff’s slow-pace of negotiations already cost the Bulls D’ntoni and now threatens to literally disenfranchise one of the team’s best players. Deng is still young, and although had a down season last year, was the one of if not the most productive player on the team.
Reinsdorff is too old school to handle players’ contracts. He approaches the fast-paced sports world with the mindset of an 19th century robber baron. And if he screws this one up….there will be blood.
19th century?
I suppose loopholes in the IRS tax code were just golf games spoiled with a walk.

Sign them both ASAP
You pay in the NBA as long as as you can trade the contract later. As long as they do not want ridiculous money sign them both.
