Blog a Bull NBA FINALS discussion
The home team Celtics just defeated the Lakers on their home floor in Game 1. Phil Jackson decided not to call any timeouts down the stretch, obviously upsetting the Vegas folk, which resulted in a 98-88 Celtics win.
The win for the C's was not really as decisive as the final score indicates, however, as LA not only hung in there through 3 quarters but led most of the first half.
PJ Brown, ex-Bull, came in off the bench for the Celtics to log some HARD minutes after an ineffective Kendrick Perkins went out with an ankle sprain.
Bryant disappeared in the 4th Quarter, as Sasha Vujajcic pulled up for a couple bad shots and the Lakers basically were totally out of sync in the 4th.
Despite the Lakers' first game loss, I am still holding out for Lakers in 6. Too young. Too athletic. Can play fast or slow. Deeper. Kobe Bryant. I could go on.
Tonight the Lakers failed to cover a 3 point spread, the o/u was at 191.5 and the teams combined for 187 (under). The NBA still does the idiotic 2-3-2 format in the Finals, so Boston stealing one in La La Land could be monumental, or at least more so than stealing one in the 2-2-1-1-1 format is. Three in a row is what LA needs to win if they can't steal one on Sunday @ 6 PDT.

Phil was out of his mind in the 4th
Yeah the Lakers have a fine bench. But, what the hell was Kobe sitting after they were down 8 with 7 minutes to play? And playing Odom, Pau, and Kobe together for only a few minutes at the end of the game? I don’t know how the Zen Master thought the triangle would work against the best defense in the league without his best passers in the game at the same time, but it clearly didn’t work out.
Pierce’s injury/comeback was pretty nifty. I’m positive KG breathed a huge sigh of relief when he saw him trotting back on the court.
Also, if the Celtics lose the series, it’s because Doc Rivers played Sam Cassell too much. Veteran experience my ass, all the guy does is shoot. Get Eddie House in the game, he’s spending too much time with his son on the bench.

and what the hell was Phil doing down the stretch? so cocky.

A Tony Allen Sam Cassell backcourt
That was the backcourt when they made some of their run in the 2nd quarter. I think Doc has earned himself a summer of “now what bitches I played Tony Allen and we won the title”

The rest for Kobe
Was particularly unusual given that there are two full days off until the next game. To be fair, however, I believe the Lakers actually decreased the margin while Kobe was on the bench during that stretch.

Lakers is the favorite
But that Celtics team is too good to be give the LA beforehand. Tonights game proved that the Lakers will have to play hard to get this title. And while the LA missed shots they dont normally do, Allen is still not playing good and KG was not that good in the last quarter.
Kobe is a GREAT player but so is Garnett. This series will be great.

this is off subject
You said that kobe disappeared in the 4th quarter that sentence alone, lets it be known that people should never compare kobe to mike. I have never seen or read any article about Jordan dissappearing in the fourth. I hope some kobe dic rider is reading this and no for a fact that kobe is no where near close to jordan no where, and kg did look a little like what he average in 03-04 with that 24 and 13 tonite, to bad he could even average ten rebound for the regular season go kg tho

Phil's substitution patterns
Phil gets a little too cute for his own good, sometimes. When I saw Kobe sitting with 7 minutes left in the 4th, I thought he was trying to make a point with his bench guys and force them to play through big minutes in the 4th. He’s got a young bench and I could see him using those minutes in the 1st game to prepare these guys for important 4th quarter minutes later on in the series. He loves doing that shit. If Vujacic(sp?) and Radmonovic or Farmar get clutch shots late in a game later this series, he’ll look like a genius. If not…well, he’ll still be seen as a genius.

Still say Lakers in 5
They had a lot of open shots rim out in the 4th quarter and this was probably the C’s best shot.

Like me, totally underestimated the Celtics ability to turn the Lakers into crybabies
It is hard for a team full of youngsters to deliver on the championship level. The Bulls had Scottie and Horace in their 4th seasons I believe when they won a title, but they also had 3 full seasons of playoff wars with Detroit to learn upon. I really hope they can catch the Celtics by surprise on Tuesday, but at home I just don’t see it coming. Gah at least Pierce will get the MVP over KG.

Players get carted off to the locker room and brought back all the time. Wasn’t Hamilton’s elbow in the last series similar? I don’t think it was a stunt and I don’t think he was expecting that big of a reaction. Celtics fans were way too wired in that game. Anything was libel to set them off and the media is always looking for an angle.

1. I can’t stand Mark Jackson
2. I can’t stand the Lakers. I kinda like the Celtics. But I hate James Posey, and I think that is overriding the other two.
3. Did anyone notice the “motivational” speech they showed Doc Rivers give during a timeout? It was something along the lines of “Remember what that guy from South Africa said about adversity.” At least remember his name if you are going to quote him, he’s not exactly obscure!

I agree with you about Jackson
I really hope ABC decides to let JVG go at it as a lone analyst next year. If you’re going to have a former player just pulling shit out of his ass as part of the lead team, bring back Bill Walton. At least his incoherent ramblings are occasionally entertaining.

He’s in so much pain he can’t even get out of bed, although that may be Walton hyperbole. Besides, he was just a studio analyst this year before his annual injury (apparently that counts for after retirement as well)

He’s a better color commentator than anyone else you can think of (and JVG is my new mancrush, he is never allowed to coach again). Jackson is light years ahead of the crap ABC had before him, Tom Tolbert, Jon Barry? gag. I would love to see Bill Walton and JVG in a booth together, I feel like they would have fun.

Jackson's just another former player spouting "conventional wisdom" from "the book"
It doesn’t matter the sport or network, broadcast teams are littered with these guys. It’s obvious they put no thought into what there saying from the number of times they contradict themselves each game. The extra animosity I have towards Jackson stems more from him being touted as a head coaching candidate because he’s deemed a good analyst without that actually being the case. He’s really no worse than most, though, likewise, he’s really no better. I do like JVG much more than I ever imagined I would and Walton’s just amusing. If you’ve got 45 minutes to kill, I highly recommend finding the podcast he did with Bill Simmons from before the season. It was great to hear Walton just take over the show and Simmons constantly struggle to get a word in.

I’m so glad SG started making those podcasts, he comes off as less of an ass when he just talks to his friends (and ass kisses Kimmel and Carolla).
I want to see Walton’s house. A grown man who has photos of John Wooden in the house? An actual pyramid of success on the wall? I actually think that would have been a sweet house to grow up in, not to mention easy access to a certain banned substance.
Also, can you believe he’s never read Breaks of the Game? He got super choked up about it when Simmons started pressing him on it, it was pretty weird.

I was happy for him, I think. I am rooting for the Celtics, so that made it a bit easier. His defensive plus/minus numbers his last year with the Bulls was incredible.
I guess it is hard to look at him and realize that we completely wasted the chance of using his potential expiring contract in a sign-and-trade this year.

Read Simmons' article from yesterday
He talks about how tons of fans were guys who showed up late, spent the whole time taking pictures, then bought overpriced merchandise to show their “team spirit.” Boston fans are wack, they are a big city with a full spectrum of die hards and bandwagoners, yet go to the city and they’ll make you think they are the most loyal fans in the world, like on some higher spectrum of fandom.

They’ll act like you speak of the alcoholic uncle who is never to be mentioned. I don’t understand why fan bases get so defensive about things that are common in every major sports town. When the Bulls were in the playoffs last year, there were tons of band wagoners who didn’t watch a game in their life who trekked to the UC just to see Wade (I sat by some of them). What the hell is the big deal? That’s what happens when you live in a huge metropolitan city, you’re not going to have a fanbase like the Packers where people’s lives just revolve around that particular team.

That is the exact same thing that is going on at Bulls games. A bunch of rich people who get tickets because of work perks or for status and show up late to their 100 level seats. The class structure is easily seen at games. The view isn’t great, but I like sitting in the rafters with the regular fans who actually are there for the game.

I thought the Oracle was the best home crowd in the league?
Or is that because they have attempted murders?
I’ve been to 20 Bulls games, only 1 during the MJ era, so I’ve seen some pretty pathetic crowds. I remember being able to walk on the court so I could get Marcus Fizer’s autograph, and feeling cool because Chris Webber said “sup” to me. All that damn in-game Jumbotron shit distracts tons of fans, especially kids. I don’t get that, I was little when I fell in love with the Bulls, I could watch a whole game without needing some Donut race to keep me entertained. The best crowd I’ve experienced was Game 2 of the Heat series. I was in the 2nd to last row, and I swear we started the “Posey Sucks” chant during that game.

What a collapse by the Lakers
This looks like many Bulls 4th quarter collapses from this past season. I’ve never seen a Finals team just completely fall apart like this.
by Big D on Jun 12, 2008 10:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Holy effing crap
That was the single worst sports collapse I have ever witnessed. That was seriously Chicago Bulls-esque, right down to the incompetent 6 of 28 shooting in the 4th quarter. I don’t know if I’m ready to live in a world where Ray freaking Allen could win Finals MVP and a Celtics team coached by Doc Rivers and led by Kevin Garnett could win a title in 5 games.
If Laker homers think Bynum would have made a difference today, they are delirious. This team just proves how important a calming presence is in the locker room. Look how collected the Celtics were. Posey was huge in the 3rd, and my man Eddie House finally got some real minutes. The Lakers are just so afraid to screw up when things aren’t going their way, that image of Sasha crying at the end will haunt LA for the entire summer.

i'm no lakers fan (in fact i hate them) but...
Bynum would have made a big difference in this series. The biggest problem LA has in this matchup is they lack Boston’s toughness. LA is playing Odom-Gasol against Garnett-Perkins, and Boston is manhandling LA in this matchup. If Bynum was starting at center (Gasol at PF, Odom at SF) that would make them a much more physical team.
I thought before this playoffs that Boston was the favorite (I thought they’d play the Spurs). They’ve showed me two things in this playoffs.
- Defense Wins Championships - This team is a stellar defensive team anchored by the best defensive player in the NBA. They also start one of the best defensive point guards in the league, and a physical center. Their championship will be attributed to their league-best defense.
- Paul Pierce is a Premier Scorer – This playoffs has opened my eyes to the player that Paul Pierce has always been. He has the superstar ability to get to the free throw line, which he did repeatedly at the end of these playoff games. Before this season, I though Ray would be their crunch-time scorer. Or maybe even KG. But Paul Pierce has taken that position by the neck. On top of that, Paul has shown to be a pretty good defender.
And LA is done….Boston is tough to beat at home, especially twice in a row.
by swede2287 on Jun 12, 2008 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was thinking that too
that it was like a Bulls game.
Bynum would make a difference. Nobody was guarding the rim for the Lakers down the stretch, it was embarrassing.
I did find it completely amazing that the ‘best player in the league’ couldn’t ‘will’ his team to victory by virtue of his ‘transcendence’. It’s almost as if basketball is a team sport…

That's a slap in the Bulls' face
Mainest thought I had was “how good is this Thibodeau?” Seemed like everyone was covered, the ball was double and tripled, and the passing lanes were filled simultaneously. Hats off to the entire Boston team, Anige on down.
by California Al on Jun 12, 2008 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And "how good is this Garnett?"
He’s made Thibodeau look good being the anchor of that defense. I’ve never seen a player with more intensity – and he brought that attitude to the team (Look at Perkins…that guy looks like he’s served hard time.)

That just indicates how poor this Lakers team on defense is
Shockingly…..teams can’t just play finesse and win titles. Gasol was soft on defense, then everyone said he was being underrated, and now it’s apparent he doesn’t know the most basic defensive principles. That failure to rotate on the Ray Allen drive at the end of the game was just abhorrent. In retrospect, I think I ignored how important it is to have a dominant big man to anchor the defense, which Bynum certainly could have done.
I think this finally puts to rest that stupid “This Lakers team is better than the early 2000 Laker teams.” Shaq may be fat and lazy, but with a title on the line, you could count on him to pound the ball in the paint and get it done.

definately the biggest collapse i've witnessed in an NBA playoff game
the only other one i can remember that comes even close (and still isn’t really even close) was the Blazers up 13 on the Lakers going into Q4 in 2000.
good point about Thibs. defense wins championships, and it was proven again tonight.
Lakers interior D was just godawful. nice job with that Gasol. and Vujajic’ “defense” on the Allen lay up was somehow breathtaking and sad at the same time.
i don’t ever remember Jordan shitting the bed like that in a must win game.

Me being from southern california everyone i know around here loves the Lakers and i hear it all the time about how kobe’s the next MJ. I just sit there and laugh. MY hate for the lakers hit it’s all time peak when i sort of blamed kobe for loul’s and ben’s contract failures and early season slump. and i honestly just don’t like the person kobe is, i mean his game is stellar but he just seems like such a douche off the court. my point of this ramble is to say that and a big time anti- laker person i felt bad for the lakers. they caught an ass-whooping of GIGANTIC-proportions. but i feel better when i think about KG and Paul Peirce= two guys that played at all star levels for weak ass teams for over 10+ years. those guys deserve a ring. AM i the only one that thinks Lebron played better vs the Celts? his fg% was lower but he took it to the rack waaaayyy more that kobe did, and more successful. not only that i was happy to see a Center that’s built like joakim dominate like KG did.

No way Boston loses at home
The crowd will be nuts, the refs will be biased, and I highly doubt KG, Pierce, and Allen are going to leave any room for error to capture their first title.
I think LA pulls it out tonight, just because I want to see Boston win it at home, and if the Lakers don’t come out with all they have, then most of us severely overestimated just how good this Lakers team really was.

But at least once the finals are over we’ll hit the heavy draft coverage.

Haha, the one-and-only Bill Walton. He cracks me up without fail.

Well that was a nice game
Do the Lakers just really suck at defense, or are they just idiots? At least they got KG in foul trouble, and Gasol had himself a very good game, what with Kobe playing like a scared baby for the majority of the game.
Also, I’m so glad the announcers decided to perform fellatio on James Posey, because I was beginning to respect his hard play. But, after JVG called him a great competitor, and he keeps doing that idiotic KG stunt where he blocks the shot after the foul I can safely say “Posey Sucks.” But, I wish we could sign him and trade Nocioni for a bag of beans.

No, it's a recurring thing that Posey does
KG has been doing it his whole career as a way of showing how intense he is, Posey has picked up the habit, though he hasn’t picked up KG’s habit of shooting 18 foot jumpers and disappearing in big games.

Posey
gets a lot of calls. I don’t know he’s shaken a the well known moniker around the league as a guy that fouls his opponent all the time. He’s getting calls with his sliding movements on D. Those are blocking fouls, but the official out of the view of the lateral movement can’t pick it up yet still calls a charge.
Posey has been the MVP of the series so far for the Celtics.
He had a little love tap last night on Kobe’s two hand dunk. Kobe could have sold that as a foul.
by NBA Observer on Jun 16, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Posey has been the MVP of the series so far for the Celtics.
It is weird to think that, but I am all “oh good, they put Posey in” these days just because they clearly need him.
I figure with Kobe’s if-you-believe-that-I’ve-got-a-bridge-to-sell-you type calls the Celtics gotta have something to even that out. And with Garnett spending most of the game on the bench (it’s funny, commentators complain if Kobe is kept on the bench by foul trouble as if it is doing a disservice to the country when they don’t seem to mind Celtic’s stars being in foul trouble and benched every game….) if it must be Posey evening things out than so be it. I still don’t like him, but I’ve tried to take a fresh look at him and typically he doesn’t seem to be going out to kill someone like with the Heat. He does do some sly stuff, PJ Brown has even gotten into that too, but that is typically considered an asset. And something Noc should learn from if he wants to be tough in a non-flopping coming season.

JVG called Posey the next Robert Horry
Basically the next wily veteran who will play so-so for the regular season, get up for the playoffs and have at least 3-4 game altering moments. Posey already learned how to hipcheck against the Bulls, so he’ll have that trick up his sleeve.

When Perkins is out
and Rivers goes to Powe to start but plays Posey at PF for most of the game due to Garnett’s foul trouble it completely boggles the mind why Jackson did not attack Posey in the post. Posey was guarding Odom. Every Laker is standing around watching Kobe. EXPLOIT!
I know you have Kobe, but dear lord get Posey in foul trouble and the Celtics will be forced to play Scalabrine.

Celtic's simply didn't make enough open looks
Even though the Lakers finally hit the century mark, they gave Boston way too many open looks. They’ve been making those shots this series, it just didn’t happen in Game 5. Especially when you look at Peirce’s late drive, which KG nearly tipped in – you could see Walton simply shove him past the rim on the replay from above the backboard. Allen missed several corner 3s that he’s been making – any one of them changes the last minute. And Kobe never touched the ball on his game-saving “steal”. (reminiscent of MJ “stripping” Karl Malone in ‘98?)
Still, I give the Lakers credit for doing enough to survive the game and make it back to Boston. Gasol had a very good game and his teammates need to thank him for prevent Boston from celebrating in LA. The Celtics really missed Perkins keeping Gasol farther from the basket. We’ll see what Tuesday brings…

That’s some serious belly fire right there. I’ll maintain that Paxson and Thibodeau were souls destined to cross, and at one point they will intertwine to make magical, gritty love.
I didn’t watch after the 1st quarter, so I don’t know how the lead got that high. There’s nothign like a 22 point blowout to wipe out Stern’s mega wet dream of the highest rated series since MJ left.

He took a lot of risks
and a lot of shots that didn’t go in but fortunately his teammates are good enough to pick up the slack when he does that. He gave them a lot of energy throughout the game, but if they were calling things a little tighter half of his defensive play and steals could have been fouls. Fortunately they rewarded his aggressiveness instead.

When in 3 of the 6 games played, the Lakers offense totally mirrored the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls. Two games where insanely hot 1st quarters led to stagnant offense and putrid decision making the rest of the game, 1 game that was a blowout, only to see the team finally begin making shots when it was pointless, and 1 game where the team has basically given up, and is getting destroyed to the point of embarrassment (currently.)
My only wish is that Phil Jackson is forced to admit that he, in fact is sleeping for most of the game.

I find that to be very interesting trivia
I find it interesting that until he won his first title, Shaq’s teams were swept in every playoff series they lost. I just don’t see it as the basis of anything significant. To reiterate what I posted above so this is not misconstrued, I know that Jordan is lightyears ahead of Kobe in terms of talent and production. If Kobe weren’t fortunate enough to have started his career off playing with Shaq and win 3 titles, no one would even consider discussing Kobe vs. Jordan. I’m glad the results of the Finals will put that conversation to rest until the next time Kobe’s in the Finals. I just don’t see using team results from a few games as a valid argument when discussing individuals.

This is by far the worst coaching job I’ve ever seen him do. I mean, the Lakers have just fucking quit tonight. Kobe's got a habit of getting embarrassed in elimination games
2003: Lost by 28 to the Spurs
2004: Lost by 13 to the Pistons (this one much much worse than the final score indicates)

Yeah I agree
I don’t understand how Kobe can just be so passive when the team really needs him. And it’s not creating a double standard, Kobe should be aggressive in every game, but there’s a difference between taking 40 shots and driving to the hoop consistently to create better shots for your teammates. MJ may not have had such a mentally weak unit around him during the Finals years, but in the last year when no one on that team was playing well and Pippen was hurt badly, MJ basically played 1 on 5 at times to get them the title in one of the most hostile environments. Against Phoenix, he scored every damn point until Pax hit the 3 in the 4th. I just think that Kobe feels too much pressure and sometimes can’t deliver, whereas Jordan always knew that there were millions of people watching him, yet he still had the confidence he would succeed. I mean, not that I’m biased or anything.

Over the years, as a bulls fan, I’ve come to despise Posey but this year he showed a different side to him. Also, JVG’s man-crush on him, and constant praise didnt hurt his case either

I think Boston had a huge advantage in locker room presence
Thanks to guys like Posey, Brown, and (ugh) Cassell. Sam I Am was like another coach for them, PJ was just a freaking gangster coming out of nowhere in that Cleveland series, and Posey was doing those gutsy plays the entire playoffs.
It’s just shocking to see a team that was struggling to guard Joe Johnson (single covering with Ray Allen was a far cry from the siccing of Pierce and Posey on Kobe) just dominate one of the best offensive teams in the league that just dismantled the defending champs.

"You have to lose in the playoffs before you can win a title"
There’s another NBA myth demolished. The Celtics won it all their first year together.

Whoever says that is just dumb
That statement can be held true for teams that are especially young and have a core of players that are still in the midst of developing. Like the Bulls when Pippen and Horace were still realizing their potential, and MJ was figuring out how to be a dominant scorer and a good teamamte. Those losses to Detroit were heart-wrenching, but it helped them realize it was possible to overcome adversity.
For the Celtics, this team was chock full of veterans. There was no need for adjustments, all of them had dealt with playoff failures.

Yikes
That was an absolute clinic last night. Kinda makes you wish Paxson waited to interview Thibs. . .
John Paxson has been like family to me. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother, who also was unable to pull off any deals for superstar free agents or hire a top-notch coach.

That was thoroughly enjoyable...
I grew up a Celtics fan (born there) and have become more of a Bulls fan after 15 years out here. Last summer I even talked a little smack to my dad, asking him how Pierce, Garnett, & Allen could only play with one ball during a game. That was dumb! But I’m really happy for him & the C’s
I hope the Bulls watch that game or that series a few times over the summer. I hate to say this, because it harkens back to old Pax-Skiles speak, but that was a “clinic” in playing tough defense! The Celtics just played pissed-off basketball last night, in spite of another early Lakers hot streak. 3 straight games the Lakers or Kobe started off hot, and the Celtics won 2 of those games to take the series.
It’s really easy to underestimate the value of defense in the NBA until you watch a series like that. The Celtics played average or above-average offense for 5 games. They built a 3-2 series lead without really clicking for 4 full quarters on the strength of their defense. When they started playing offense well, they were downright scary. Really, that series was a few plays in games 3 & 5 from being a sweep.
