Open Thread: Derrick Rose press conference (UPDATE: VIDEO)

Starts at 11am CST. Unfortunately, Bulls.com doesn't have a mention of live online video (UPDATE: apparently the site will carry it live). It will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net, as well as WSCR.

This is almost the antithesis of the VDN presser. I was really interested in what the new coach had to say. I don't think Rose will say anything interesting, especially considering his numerous interviews already. And I don't mind it either.

So it'll be up to Pax to provide any juicy information. Not his, er, specialty.

Can't wait

What does it mean when you get really excited for a press conference? Umm, the second press conference in a month that you are giddy about???Uh oh…haha
Loved KC ’s article in the trib with the interview with jay williams. Talked a lot about the amount of pressure that will be on rose. But the nice thing about rose, and its something we have all witnessed, is that he seems to shine when the pressure is on. Even in tough losses. He was the only one amoung his entire team to talk to the press after the tough loss to Tenn back in February. I hope he has outgrown the crying after games thing, because he is going to be losing a little bit more in the NBA. Anyway, we have all witnessed him handle the pressure of HUGE games, sometimes totally by himself. He has shown it on multiple occasions. People hold the missed free throw against him, as does he, but keep things in perspective. Memphis was in the position there were in because of Rose. Not only is he a dynamic player who can do a lot of different things on the court at, but his best games come out when there is the most amount of pressure. He excels with pressure. I know there is no guarantee this will translate to the NBA, but he has proved his game doesn’t get shaken easily. In fact, he tends to step up big time. And that, above all else, IMO, is his most important asset to this Bulls team.

oh this is bad already

Pax basically says he doesn’t want to talk because last week he said barely anything and the press ran with it (at least I think that was his gist)

Then Derrick Rose’s opening statement was short “I like being drafted and being a Bull”.

Every answer so far is ‘like’ ‘like’ ‘like’.

Oh no we’ve handed the keys to a kid!

I’m not sure I like Tyrus in the summer league though. Just seems more harm could get done than good. We know he can jump over fringe roster dopes.

For Rose

Thomas should play to help Rose. Any time you can get with the new players and coaches before camp will help you.

by NBA Observer on Jun 30, 2008 11:44 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yea

summer league performances are only noteworthy when they are bad. Like in 2003 I believe when Chandler and Curry both sucked it up and I knew the season was not going to go well.

by JSlakov on Jun 30, 2008 11:54 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I remember watching those games before the 2001-02 season

hoping to see Chandler and Curry dominate, and instead, Zach Randolph just schooled them again and again.

I hadn’t followed Randolph at MSU and I was shocked at how easily he got his offense.

just contrianism, I'm guessing

his old refrain was “All the other Chicago GMs get crapped on, but Paxson gets a free pass”. Granted, now that the Bulls are bad, this isn’t true. Larry was out in front of it though, and in his mind that means he was prescient, not impatient.

I thought he was signing with the Jordan Brand...

He did advertisements for them earlier this year but I guess if was just for the game they sponsored:

by smash! on Jun 30, 2008 12:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I've heard that Nike doesn't view this particular class as anything special as far as a deal goes.

That suprises me, although Derrick is not the most gifed communicator he seems to be a very marketable player imo. He has a great name, plays in a great city and has a look about him.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jun 30, 2008 12:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

His Explosiveness + His Smile + Chicago + Bulls = I'm sure he'll sign with the Jordan Brand.

And maybe the fact that he knows MJ personally will help. Check out this Trib article they pulled from the archives. Gossip details on the first time he met MJ and visited his house, and his relationship with Marcus Jordan (Derrick & Marcus were (are?) in longterm relationships with a set of twins).

Plus, OJ Mayo already inked a 4 year deal with Nike last year last week. So ya gotta think DR & MB will get some soon…

My favorite question

When the one girl asks about his “life philosophies”...
She words the question wierd, and stutters a whole lot, like once she starts asking the question she realizes how vague and pathetic a question it is, i am sure i thought i heard some other reporters chuckle at the question, and rose eventually did as well.

Rose's answer:

“If I do anything bad, God is watching.”

Not exactly 500 pages of “Crime and Punishment” but it seems like he’s got a functioning moral compass.

To end it off

“Should I say thank you to them?”

HaHa!

by Option27 on Jun 30, 2008 12:00 PM CDT   0 recs

I just watched it all on tv, "highlights" below. (This might put you to sleep...)

- Derrick started out saying “I want to thank you all for coming out and this is a dream come true. I’m happy that the Bulls picked me.” Paxson interjected “you better be!” And everyone laughed. Ohhh, good times.
- Derrick starting out using “like” as every other word, but then calmed down a bit and almost got the hang of things by the end. His answers were short and sweet but sometimes he got a rise out of the crowd.
- Red Roses adorned the table, and long stem roses were handed out to the audience, including Derrick’s family. (Wonder what the marketing dept wold have come up with if they drafted Mayo?)
- Pax & Vinny got haircuts for the occasion- Pax was looking especially “shiny”. Pax & Derrick were in suits and nice Memphis-blue ties. Vinny wore a red Bulls polo (and some bling in the shape of an Italian horn.)
- The Bulls told Derrick they were picking him before they announced it. He said he was still nervous that Stern was going to say “B..” instead of “D..” though. (Brook Lopez?)
- When asked what current Bulls players have reached out to him he listed Tyrus Thomas, the only Bull at the press conf, Joakim Noah and Ben Gordon. (That’s the whole team, isn’t it?)
- Derrick said he never saw a Bulls game in person as a kid.
- His memory of the Jordan years: “Against Utah, every time Jordan got the ball in his hands my brother Dwayne used to always turn off the TV and we’d all get mad at him”. (Who does that!?)
- He won’t mind rookie chores since he’s got 3 older brothers and he’s used to tagging along and “sucking up to them.” “But I feel bad for the next rookie” he said with a wry smile.
- Outside his family, coach Cal is the other mentor he named.
- Paxson said they’d start summer league practice this week; The roster will include Rose, Thomas, Noah, Nichols and Gray.
- After the conference was over and it was time for the photo op, he hesitated and asked Paxson “Can I thank them?”

Nice kid, boring conference, but who cares as long as he’s spectacular on the court. I cannot wait!

by smash! on Jun 30, 2008 12:04 PM CDT   0 recs

Sweet. I know summer league is mostly meaningless.

But, it sure beats waiting until October to see Rose play again. And I’m glad Tyrus is going. Both for establishing a relationship with Rose, but also because Tyrus at least makes summer league interesting.

Seems like the typical kid groomed for NBA success since high school

None of these young players (James, Melo) have particularly engaging personalities. I have no doubt that once the Nike hype machine gets around Rose they could build him up as well.

where the heck is

Sefolosha?

it’s not like he was burning up the league last year.

Practicing together as soon as possible is the best thing that could happen to this team. Practicing THIS WEEK? man that sounds good.

I’m really excited that Thomas is Well deep into this. Totally goes against the “attitude” that’s been assigned him.

I’m surprised that they are giving nichols that much attention. Maybe he’s got something?

by gman2849 on Jun 30, 2008 3:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They QO'd him already

and they guaranteed his contract last season when the deadline came and went for most teams to drop guys.

Nichols did prove he could score points in the 14 team team monster Big East conference. Syracuse didn’t have many scoring options though.

by NBA Observer on Jun 30, 2008 3:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Obviously, Rose is not the most voluble guy...

but did he just say, “Tyrus Thomas” in anser to a question, or did he go into it at all?

Also, do you have anything more on only Gordon and Noah showing up? Did anyone comment about it?

Next to Tyrus, I was looking forward to seeing Thabo and Rose play next to each other, to the delight of Bulls fans and Magic PR staff / announcers. Does anyone have any info on Thabo’s summer workout schedule? We know that TT and Lu have been back and forth to IMG and BG is apparently hanging around the Berto Center. If we have any hope of burying Larry Hughes, Thabo has to be consistent from eighteen feet in.

I haven't seen Thabo plugged into media reports lately

The only one I’ve heard is the appearance he made with Waddle and Silvy to discuss the upcoming draft.

At the end of the regular season KC reported that Thabo would be in Chicago for most of the Summer to work on his game. He declined Swiss Summer invitations.
