Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

John Paxson
The former Irish basketball player is not being mentioned by many, but would make for an interesting candidate. Paxson knows a lot about winning, clinching a NBA title for the Bulls with a game-winning shot. He also knows about running in a big-time program, currently serving as the General Manager of the Bulls. Pax does not have any college experience, however. He also does not have experience with football.

Everytime a job opens up in the athletic department in ND

Pax gets mentioned for it. Except if it’s coaching basketball. It’s been going on for years and years. They love him there.

Why would Pax want to leave?

I mean I could see after last year him jumping at anything besides the Bulls job—especially after every single move he seemed to make in the 18 months before this years trade deadline all seemed to backfire miserably this yr….

But then we won the lottery, locked down the #1 draft of hopefully Beasley (Though Rose would be nice too—I had to plug), and now coaches are clamorign for our team, and we have plenty of tradeable assets (having hte #1 allows us to part with both Gordon and Deng and even maybe Hinrich for a superstar if need be too, becasue we have so much depth elsewhere)....

Paxson now has one of the better NBA gigs in the country, a young team, with gobs of assets and talent and a new coach coming in to give them some renewed life, and not to mention a potential superstar coming in on June 26th, and a budding could be star player if everything matures in Tyrus (superstar athletically, just not on the court hopefully yet).....

ND has gobs more pressure, their football team is fading fast, their recruiting is getting tougher and tougher due to the school size and the demands of the academics at Notre Dame…..

The Bulls gig also I would think pays more $$ and will be much more secure and in an area that he has to love (bball) and for a team that he won a championship for (vs just playing for the basketball team at ND)....I doubt Pax will be gone.

Job security!

Reinsdorf is a far more loyal master than almost anyone Pax could work for, almost to a fault. So it’s no surprise that he would have less job security at ND. However, the school has really chewed up & spit out more football coaches than athletic directors. They have only had 3 in the last 21 years.
That said, the Willingham-Weis transition certainly showed that the job is subject to interference from trustees and alumni.

true, but his job is SO secure with the Bulls

that he could leave to be ND AD, and then come back to the warm embrace of Reinsdorf after he was fired.

Literally, they would hug for an uncomfortably long time...

But even I don’t see Pax leaving. I was interested to see his name in connection with the opening, thus the post.
