MMod is so awesome during March.
Now, time to watch Rose destroy both Collison and Augustin again.

Man, Rose was absolutely FILTHY in this Texas game.
21 points (7-10 FG, 7-8 FT), 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 TOs in 34 minutes…and this is just the stat line. I encourage everyone who hasn’t seen this game before to watch it.

That's why I was laughing at the post
about the stupiditiy of choosing a point guard over a 20/10 guy. Rose SHOULD be a 20/10 guy!

Exactly.
For some people, though, the only thing that registers with “20/10” is “big guy, points, rebounds.”

wow
way to have unreasonable expectations. Only Chris Paul has averaged 20 points and 10 assists in the last 15 years. You’d have to go back to Tim Hardaway and Kevin Johnson before that I think.

wow
way to read with the literalism of a 6 yr old. Although I believe he has the raw talent to become a superstar pg eventually, I realize that hitting 20/10 once or twice in a career probably puts you in the company of around 10-15 players ever. But if he achieves Nash, D-Will numbers of 18-19/11-12, I’m calling him a 20/10 guy, if that’s ok by you. By the way, you were the poster who insisted on the idiocy of choosing a point guard over Beasley’s stats, weren’t you?
by California Al on Jun 30, 2008 1:49 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well no
I was the poster who insisted that the Bulls should take Beasley (and his historic stats) over a point guard who hasn’t produced nearly as much in college (and who was outproduced by many of his peers). There’s no precedent of drafting of a point guard with the number one pick based on potential. Idiocy is a strong word, as I think Rose will be a good player with a chance of being great but to me you make the choice based on whats most likely to happen and I believe Beasley is more likely to be great than Rose.
by JSlakov on Jun 30, 2008 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that said
now that the choice has been made all I can do is hope root for Rose and the Bulls.

Major respect for your general input
OK, idiocy is a strong word, but adamant for sure. I don’t think the posters here were thinking potential; for me at least, his performance was outstanding and looks to be transferrable. The potential is for one of the best ever, but he can fall well short of Isaiah, Magic, Stockton, Nash, Paul, etc and still be a title-capable leader. The really good pg’s bring a cohesion and efficiency that’s difficult for scorers to achieve.
Sorry if I was a little aggressive in responding, but I thought your post was a little condescending. I think the pg who’s at around 18/7 or 16/8 are contributing just as much scoring as the pf who’s at 20/10. I consider your posts very informed.
by California Al on Jun 30, 2008 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
no problem
I wasn’t trying to be condescending but I can see how it was. I just thought by you saying that he SHOULD be a 20/10 guy you were setting your bar really high. If you’re expecting 18/7 or 16/8 than that is much more reasonable. In fact I’d say I’d like at least 20/8 or 18/10 at some point for him to be worthy of #1.

Also, it's crazy how much bigger he "looks" on the court
than even his measurements suggest. His body control is unbelievable for his size as well. He’s incredible when it comes to finishing in the lane, something we were obviously brutal at last year. I’m so glad we drafted this guy.

I thought last year's bulls were the worst team I've ever seen at penetrating the lane.
Add to it that D can finish too, and I cannot wait until the season starts!

Wait till everyone sees his defensive rebounding
combined with his ability to push the ball at an absurdly fast pace. It’s just…sick.

I'm 15 minutes through the Memphis/Texas game
and Rose is AWESOME! I can’t believe we got this guy!!!
He’s at a different level than Augustin, it’s not even close. Nearly every time he touches the ball he’s penetrating deep into the paint, completely unchallenged. He looks like he’s jogging out there, and nobody can keep up with him.
So far all three of Rose’s passes have been kickouts. But Rose draws the defense in so tightly when he gets into the lane, that I can see him throwing alley oops to Tyrus while being in the lane himself. So far in the NBA, I’ve only seen that done consistently with Paul and Chandler, but Rose will be able to do that too.

My favorite play is when he grabs the massive d-rebound then takes it coast to coast
...gets hit slightly, re-adjusts his body in mid-air, and hits the layup.
Or the one where he steals it and throws down a slam….or the one where he posts up Augustin and shoots over him…or the one where he stuffs Augustin and throws and outlet to a wide-open Dorsey for a durnk…or the one where he hits a semi-fadeaway from the right key…or the one…

Rose is easily better than Hinrich right now, yes?
And Hinrich is arguably the 3rd best PG in the East. I’m officially gushing.

It's not even close. He'll be embarrassing Hinrich in practice soon, I would think.

31 minutes in...
and all I can think right now is we definitely definitely definitely made the right pick.
by YaoPau on Jun 28, 2008 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And Augustin is terrible
4/18 FG this game against the 6’2” Rose… 8/31 FG over two games against Kansas and 6’2” Chalmers. He’s not an NBA starter.

And to think we would have been considering him if we had drafted at 9

Wait till you see the UCLA game...
Rose: 25 points, 9 rebs, 5 assists, 1 TO
vs. Darren Collison (a great, yet undersized, defender and Russell “Top 5 draft pick” and Pac 10 D-player of the year Westbrook)

Just watched Rose vs. UCLA
And while he blew by Westbrook and Collison early on, things changed in the second half. Two main weaknesses exposed by UCLA:
1) Rose has trouble hitting the 6 to 10 foot jumper/floater once he penetrates into the lane and gets stopped. That became his go-to move in isolation against Westbrook, yet he threw up three airballs on those plays in the second half.
2) Rose has no post game from what I’ve seen. When Collison played him on the wings in isolation, Rose could’ve easily backed him deep into the post, like Billups does to Gordon. But that didn’t happen once.
All in all, Rose is still awesome and the right pick, but he needs to find a way to score efficiently when he doesn’t get to the hoop on penetrations. I doubt he’ll be an efficient scorer in his rookie season, but the tools are all there to do it by year 2 or 3.

I don't think many rookie PG's have a post up game
That’s something that a coaching staff has to tell him to exploit, I wonder if Calipari didn’t want Rose backing players down because it would disrupt their offense.
And yes, I noticed that shot was not a good look for him. That’s something he really needs to work on, because if he can beat his man off the dribble he should be able to get his baskets like that.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 29, 2008 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that's a good point about Cal and his offense
Not even the bigs posted up too often. Even they would flash in the lane and shoot a quick turnaround. They rarely ever backed guys down on the block.

and shot over them.

I'm not sure
Collison utilized one of his weaknesses, and Westbrook the other. So, they “held” him to 25/9/6??? I watched UCLA all year, live twice. If you can put up 25 w/o 5-6 3-balls, you are a stud. When they played, I liked Memphis, but I was stunned, and have been in Rose’s corner ever since.

and like i said, getting to the line 12 times in a 40-minute game of that stature is extremely impressive

I remember someone posting saying his court vision wasn't that great
Well, after watching these games, seeing him push the ball against teams and dishing it out for open 3s again and again, I respectfully disagree. He isn’t making passes that make your jaw drop, but he is doing EXACTLY what we need. Take the ball, and attract defenders. Teams try trapping him he is surrounded by good shooters that can bail him out. Try using zone he can get into the middle of the lane for a pull-up jumper.
And as for on-court leadership? He is vocal, clapping his hands, yelling for the ball, directing his teammate where to go. Just because he isn’t getting in his teammate’s faces or screaming and hollering doesn’t mean he is a leader. His longer tenured teammates deferred to him the whole season, and he wasn’t passive at all.

The people that say he doesn't have great court vision
are the idiots that only look at his assists numbers and have no clue what the DDM offense is all about. Just wait till this guy is playing in the more wide-open and less restricted NBA game.

Guilty.
Vision admittedly wasn’t the right word, because he clearly sees the floor well, especially in transition. The point of the post, though – and I said it near the end – was that he wasn’t a great interior passer, and I think that’s still right on. Rose is thoroughly dominating Augustin in the game I’m watching, but Augustin has found Atchley inside a couple times when it didn’t seem like there was anything there, while Rose is mostly driving and kicking.
The thing I’m seeing about Rose, though, especially in watching this Texas game, is that he’s so superior at penetrating that it might not matter if he’s an elite-level passer. He can get the ball to our big men in his own way – by driving to the lane, attracting a triple team, then making the easy pass.
by YaoPau on Jun 28, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, Memphis was so good that Rose never had to force anything.
The drive and kick was way too easy, because it was there literally EVERY single time. No one could stop him from getting into the lane – not even Russell Westbrook, a downright nasty defender.
And look how many perfect alley oops he throws to Dorsey. Can you even imagine what it’s going to be like with Tyrus and Noah? It’s going to be silly good.

I think you're probably right.
He doesn’t thread those Jason Kidd passes, but I would agree that he doesn’t need to. He is a good decision maker after getting by his defender, which happens a LOT.
by potato0328 on Jun 28, 2008 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We don't see him thread passes
but their offense didn’t use a lot of cutters like that so it isn’t like we know he can’t thread. If he works with Deng and Thabo a bit he has a fair chance at having opportunities like that with them moving without the ball as they do. If his college year is his base skills we are pretty well off already. They’ll have to try different things out to see what more he can do.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

At 19
Its easier to learn and develop habits and styles. Im closer to 21 and im still learning how to do things as a pg, if you have the will to change, and are not set in one way then you can easily change and adapt. If rose can just do that, adapt to the game, he will be great. I think he can, scoring points when points are needed, getting assists when assists are needed, its not about balancing the two, its about doing them when they need to be done. Rose has this talent, but i also think kirk does too, although rose probably holds more advantages then kirk ever will (physically stronger, and will be able to learn from the mental msitakes that have gotten to kirk) and so long as he stays healthy, i have no doubt that rose will completely solidify the starting pg role for the bulls within two years. I dont know if he will be an allstar, but his name will be in the ballots for sure…kirk doesnt suck, but rose seems destined to be great….
On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....
