This isn't exactly a quote: In his grades, Jonathan Givony gives the Bulls a B, mostly because: Our enthusiasm for Asik was severely dampened once he decided to sign a 5-year contract with Fenerbahce that has no escape clause for the NBA, though.
Although I had read that on various sites, everything we've heard from Chicago outlets since is that he'll be coming over in a "couple of years". I think Paxson maybe even specifically said "two."
I e-mailed Givony and this was his response: Nothing has been signed yet, but it will happen soon his people tell me.

If this is the case, then Paxson totally got screwed.
While 2nd round picks aren’t really that valuable, to spend them on someone who might not be able to contribute for five years is a little ridiculous.
However, I do still question Givony’s assertion simply because Paxson has said that Asik is one of the two players he “targeted”. If that’s the case, I can’t imagine him not having all the information at the time of the draft.

Well on Draft Day the ESPN guy (Fran?) said he had signed the 5 year contract
I can’t imagine Paxson would willingly hand out 3 2nd round picks for a player who won’t/can’t play for the team for 5 years. And if that’s the case, then he loses some pieces to make trades with this offseason.

I thought he had
two years left on his current contract. That would be what Pax was referring to. This new contract would be a bit ridiculous if he wanted any kind of career in the NBA IMO. He’d be what, nearly 27 and never played in the NBA? Perhaps he didn’t want to be promised to the Bulls. Why would he open himself to be selected only to sign a 5 year deal?

Who cares what Jonathan Givony thinks?
And also, there’s no way Paxson doesn’t know more about the Asik situation than these guys at DX. I highly doubt he gives up that much for a guy who can’t come over for half a decade. Let’s be real here.

Yeah, I think this 5 year thing
stems from the Hollinger report where he wrote “Apparently he signed a five-year deal to stay in Turkey with no buyout, meaning he might not play in the NBA for a long time.” Doesn’t sound like even Hollinger knew for sure.

No, Givony has much better "sources" than Hollinger.
Not that his sources are better than Hollinger’s sources (although I’m unsure if Hollinger has any), but that DraftExpress isn’t taking its news from articles by Hollinger. I’ve been following DX, and they talk to a lot of people.

Considering Hollinger works for ESPN, I'd say he has sources.
Come on now.

Good one?
First “kid,” now “champ”...what’s next? Buddy? Dawg? Bro? Keep ‘em comin’, I can feel the burn!

Do you work for DX or something?
And please, I could do without you addressing me (and whoever else) as “kid.”

I wasn't addressing you with my original post
It was more of a response to the DX quote you posted – sorry that wasn’t clear.
Really, though, you’re the one who came out firing with the backhand “kid” comment, as well as the baseless claim that DX has much better sources than a guy who works for the largest sports programming network in the world. For someone who seems to often call people out, you’re a bit abrasive over this whole thing.

Well, it was that you weren't clear.
I thought you were basically saying I was an idiot for even contacting this guy about what he has said. And again, Hollinger probably has very few of his own “sources”. He more than likely gets his information from Chad Ford or Andy Katz, and I think, quite frankly, we’ve seen how often they’ve been right. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing impressive.
On the other hand, Givony was sitting in the green room during the draft. He attended the Orlando pre-draft camps and just about all of the specialized workout sites. His site even attended the Eurocamps (and maybe even he did).
And, if you actually read what I typed, you’d see that he says “his people”, meaning Asik’s, told him the contract was about to be done. That clearly means he was talking to Givony. They might have been feeding him bullshit, but he was talking to them personally.
By all means, though, please continue to bash their sources.

Of course, since it wasn't a done deal, none of this means he's going to be "right."
We don’t know what’s going to happen. I was simply passing on some information. Something that YaoPau (someone else cared what the guy thought, I guess) decided to put into a fanpost and then Matt moved into a diary.
So again, please question again, “Who cares what Jonathan Givony thinks?” Because it’s all so damned serious.

To me it just seemed like a ridiculous notion
that Givony would be so much more informed than Pax (and even Hollinger. On that note, if his sources are Chad Ford and Andy Katz, isn’t that pretty darn legitimate?).
Clearly Givony has contacts (I feel that DX is by far the best place for draft coverage), but it seems completely irrational that Pax wouldn’t be able to obtain the same information that a guy who runs an NBA draft website does. If it’s really the case that Asik just signed this contract and Pax had no clue, then that either: (a) makes Givony the most insanely well-informed person out of anyone not affiliated with the NBA, or (b) it makes Pax look like a complete moron who didn’t do his homework, which I find hard to believe.
The assertion of that quote reeked of “Pax is stupid – He can’t even get the same information that a guy who runs an NBA draft website gets,” which, like I said, seemed absurd. It wasn’t meant to bash you; it just seemed utterly ludicrous.
Maybe I read it all wrong, or missed the point of the original post. Hopefully what I wrote here is remotely coherent; I’ll put it this way, though: basically, now that I read back on this thread, I pretty much agree with your original reply wherein you say Pax might have gotten totally screwed. My belief is that this isn’t the case, and maybe I just came off too strongly with my first reply.

Also it's pretty clear that Paxson was set on drafting Omer.
It’s hard to believe that Paxson didn’t know what he was getting into given his emphasis on over turning every stone.

From my reading of the contracts
I still seem room for this explanation.
Asik signed a 5 year contract with Fenerbache AND there are two years remaining on that contract. He’s 22 now so that would mean he signed the deal at 19. That isn’t an unusual age to sign a 5 year deal.

That's what I thought at first too on draft night
but everywhere I look seems to indicate he is being presented with some kind of new contract not related to whatever one he is under now. It’s so difficult to get accurate info on this. Right now I’ll just have to trust what Pax knows of the situation. He’s coming over in two years. He’d be a fool not to. You don’t want to make the NBA leap when you are even that much older I wouldn’t think.

I still don't get it.
Pax passes on CDR, for a 22yr old center that we won’t see for probably 3 seasons? Don’t we have Noah that we had a very good rookie season? Gordon out best offensive, and one of the best shooters in the game might leave and we could have gotten a steal in CDR to grow with everyone else? Pax i hope this is your last season. I give you no credit for the Rose draft because that was really a no-brainer or a 49-51 call at best. The only good reason i see for passing up on CDR is because of his youth and we really don’t need to get any younger but he still could have been a good trading peice. Maybe early July we might see him holding an ace up his sleeve or something.(ya right)

I really wanted CDR, too.
Maybe Pax is convinced he’s going to sign BG, so he didn’t want to deal with another guard. Sucks, though, because he would have been a great addition.

Everyone else
before the Bulls passed on CDR as well. Perhaps there was a reason for it. Besides, if he was extraordinarily good wouldn’t he have been picked in the first round? Even if he was picked by us he would have ended up in d-league. I don’t see it as a big deal. We’ve got enough young players to develop and should we find ourselves wanting a second round pick in the future we can just buy one. By stashing away a promising center we can stagger things so that when he comes aboard Rose and Noah and Thomas have hopefully grown out of the nurturing phase and have a center who can back Noah up for when Gooden is gone. And that is all happening the same time Wade and the others will became available. So pretty much all we did was stash away a guy who might have ended up in the first round of the draft in the future and not added immediately to the glut on the roster as it stands today. I don’t see it as a bad move on Paxson’s part.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Good post. I would definitely like to know what happened with CDR.
He’s way too good to have fallen that far without something significant happening that damaged his draft stock.

We have enough contracts already
There really wasn’t interest in adding more. Rose’s #1 contract will guarantee him about 3 million more than had we had the #9 pick.
Once we moved to #1 it was more than likely that any other pick would be traded for future considerations or draft a player that will not cost us any more for a few more seasons.

Paxson said he didn't want another young player on the roster.
