Another Reason to Hate Blazers' Fans

This post is the worst kind of smugness you can find.  Pity for another team's fan base?

If you want to see what it's like to NOT be Portland...I mean to have a complete and total anti-Portland draft experience...if you want to know what it feels like to become a victim of the Draftburglar...you need to read the following Sacramento Kings open thread from our good friends at SacTown Royalty.

It's one thing to worship at the feet of your "shrewd" GM who won the lottery when Greg Oden comes out.  To believe that you have it so good to actually feel sorry for other fans is despicable.  Hey guys, how about waiting for Jesus Pritchard's plan to come to fruition first?  Hate to see what's going to happen a couple years down the road when Durant's in MVP contention and Oden's limping walk appropriately fits with the septuagenarian look of his face.

FanPosts are user-created posts from the BlogABull community, and are to be treated as the opinions and views of that particular user, not that of the blogger or blog community as a whole.

Or, it might by Hinrich’s contract that’s the cancer.

I’m going to DVR them and watch them constantly until the season starts.

I just want the Bulls,

and Tyrus in particular, to badly outplay the Blazers, and LMA in particular. I liked their team, and their young players, but their fans….

They can’t even stand to talk with each other. They have to come here and talk to us.

Eh, they're just referencing

a bullet from TrueHoop yesterday. I read the thread. It’s funny in that it’s the same reaction we had over here whenever Boylan inserted a four-guard lineup, or benched Noah in the fourth.

Blazers fans can relate to the crappiness of other front offices. They haven’t been past the first round in 2000, so I don’t have a problem with their boasting a little.

I don’t have a problem with their boasting, it’s the pity that really bothers me.

Bingo

You hit it right on the head. We can really empathize with the fans’ frustrations with questionable draft decisions—after all, af few years ago we passed on Chris Paul and Deron Williams (BTW, Pritchard wanted Paul that year but he wasn’t in charge.)

We feel SO blessed to have Saint Kevin in charge after Trader Bob Whitsitt gave us the Jailblazers, and then had to suffer through John Nash and Steve Patterson. A few of us may be gloating, but most of us just feel pretty damn lucky.

Personally I wish the blazers would STOP buying picks.

Kind of

But then again, we’ve seen James Dolan hand out money for 8 years with nothing to show for it. I think having a fiscally responsible owner forces a GM to actually think when assembling a team. Sure, Cuban is a nice asset to have, but he’s gone overboard with FA signings and trades oftentimes.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The way they act

You would think that they actually drafted MJ and won six titles or something. Instead, their claim to fame is taking Sam Bowie, losing to the Bulls in the Finals, giving up that huge lead to LA in the Western Conference Semi’s, and becoming the Jail Blazers. I understand they’re optimistic for the the future, but do something noteworthy before you start pitying other teams fans. I don’t think SacTown fans were pitying the Blazers fans when they drafted Kevin Martin while the Blazers picked up Bassy Telfair 48 spots too early.

Blazers fan checking in

I agree that BE has gotten kind of smug. People are already planning multiple parades when we haven’t even made the playoffs yet. At the same time, I think its the pain of all the losses to you guys and the Lakers that makes us so hopeful that our time is finally approaching. We realize how many bonehead moves our franchise has made in the past, and it makes us appreciate Kevin Pritchard’s moves more than we otherwise would.

Dave’s tone in that post isn’t what he was going for in my opinion. He was trying to tell Blazers Fans not to take these exciting times for granted. He says “we know the feeling…” I agree it came off sounding smug but I think that was an honest mistake on Dave’s part.

Dude,

you called me insane BECAUSE i said Greg Oden was the next Bill Russell, and not once have you followed that comment up when I posted my reply. I posted the link that nbadraft.net has about posters several times, but I haven’t heard you mention a single thing about it. I know that a projection of a player is just that, a projection, and that just because Greg Oden is compared to Bill Russell in terms of potential doesn’t mean that he will ever reach it. But my point in the whole matter was the comparison of potential itself! Dude, every fan base hypes up it’s players (for the most part), whether they have played a minute of nba ball or not. If you are truly being consistent in applying your statement about not hyping up any players over their projections, then more power to you. But a word to the wise, potential is what gets fans excited, haven’t you ever heard that the journey towards a goal is often the most enjoyable part? You misunderstood what I said, and I can understand that, because I wasn’t clear in any of my statements till now. But I’m not going to apologize for hyping up Oden as the savior of the blazers franchise.

Blazer fans can empathize

After years of incompetence from Bob Whisitt and John Nash, Blazer fans have a reason for optimism and hope. This franchise has gone to the depths of hell with a team consisting of Randolph, Ratliff, Miles, and Telfair. Blowing draft pick after draft pick and the owner threatening to sell the team potentially leaving Portland. That makes any fan thirsting for a ray of hope. When the future begins to look bright, you start to remind yourself of where you came from. You see, the Blazer fans were like the Sac fans in the draft thread. Cursing, angry, and confused. We were on the otherside.

In addition, I also seem to remember a fanbase thinking dynasty after their team swept the defending champs and subsequent signing of a certain defensive player of the year. Confidence, arrogance, whatever you want to call it, is not unique to Blazer fans.

But did you see who sacramento picked???

Seriously… you wouldn’t be cursing out management too?

Blazer fans have dealt with a lot of pain. We can definitely empathize with the pain of other teams, particularly ones that many of us used to like.

Dave was simply saying “look how far we’ve come and appreciate it” and the post itself was HILARIOUS!!!

The kings fans on the blog had no issue and replied back. Funny and cool guys. But if you feel the need to get a jump start on hating the blazers, that’s cool. I know many blazer fans hated the bulls because they were so good for so long.

Congrats on Rose by the way. At least your GM wasn’t like the Sacramento GM or New York.

Terry Porter

Jerome Kersey

some guy named Scottie Pippen.

Great players have come from small schools. I’ve seen Thompson play and he’s terrific. I predict he goes down as one of the top 10 players from this draft.

Sacramento Kings wasn't a random choice

They wanted Bayless, had the pick before Blazers and Bayless was sliding right down to their laps. KP convinced the Pacers to take him, and dealt around the Kings to pick up the guy they wanted. Sacramento got outfoxed (and let their fans down), and it reminded Dave of the 2006 draft were the Blazers ended up with Martell and JJ instead of Chris Paul…. Bad times :(

#3 pick

was dealt to Utah for #6 and #21.

Utah took DWill 3rd and Paul went next to the Hornets.

We ended up with Webster and Jack. Yikes.

Ah, ok

Hmm if you draft Paul, isn’t your record that season better than whatever it was? So, you probably don’t get Brandon Roy, and you might not even get Greg Oden.

I’d rather have a nucleus of Roy, Oden, Aldridge, and 100 prospects than Chris Paul and who knows what.

Agreed

We’ve debated that at Blazers Edge, but some people are still upset about that pick regardless.

I’m still hoping Webster turns into something because I was one of those idiots rooting for him.

by hobobob on Jun 27, 2008 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not yet. Webster is still really, really young...

............................ Bowie was a big, overhyped stiff that was hurt all the time. Webster has the body and the skills and is gradually learning the game. Blazers had another high school player named Jermaine O’Neill and gave up on him too soon, with disastrous results… So there is a definite wait and see approach on Webster.

He was a consistent starter at the 3 last season.

WoW

We showed up quick. Just being rich doesnt garentee sucsess – jailblazers, cuban, ect. you have to also be a little smarter then the rest. most millinoinares in america are new to there moner, first gen and all, and there is not alot of second gen kids making it big just on name and wallet alone. Now, KP isnt smart becouse of allens cash, allens cash is smart becouse of KP.

admittedly, when I am having a bad day, and the next guy is having a great day, I can get a little resentfull. I can even do this when I have worked hard and through blood sweat and tears, generate only average numbers, and the new guy setting next to me is happily chatting about the near record month he is having. He is not boasting in my failure(or whatever I percieve my efforts to be) , but simply happy and content with his own sucsess. How can I begrudge him that?

Dave was simply adding temper to the fan base at blazers edge, noting that some of our points of discontentment, would infact be relished on anotheer team. he wasnt trying to be a …..... He was simply reminding us of our roots, humility?

I have only seen one blazer fan be a jerk on this site, othwise most coment seam to be made with a friendly vibe.

Oh yeah

KP is regarded throughout the ENTIRE league as the example. People are changing how they put there teams together, trying to duplicate his sucsess. Youll see more teams build for culture then stats now, FACT. when he grabbed B-ROY and LaMonster Aldridge, he was openly ridiculed by pundits, now he praised by his shrewed efforts. Cash did NOT by Bayless, who was earlier projected 4 or 5, at the 13, that my friends is waking up early, puttin in work and not clocken out till the jobs done. The only place sucsess comes before work is in the dictionary. KP has put his in.

No offense

But Pritchard isn’t the first person to ever build a team through the draft, and taking advantage of other team’s incompetence. Taking team chemistry into consideration isn’t shrewd, it’s common sense. Pritchard looks like Yoda+Master Splinter because there are so many bad GM’s out there.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its only common sence if everyone is doing it

and since most gms have in the past looked for melting stats first, pritch does come off well. I don’t mind that he is not the first, but he does seam pretty good. someone even (I think it was you) pointed out that pritch learned the ways of the force(just kidding) over at san antonio. Good. Its funny, if you read the san antonio thread they say the same things that we say, ie that there are rings in the future, barring injury of course, not bad from a dynasty(arguable) fan base. We like him a lot, hard not to when considering where we have come from. KInda like how solders will blindly follow a man into any battle if he has first proven his metal, we think he has, and that he is a great leader. And we think so with out shame.

Sure some teams took a step back, but holy crap it’s not going to be easy winning 50 games in the West.

Our expectations were rightfully high last summer. Boston didn’t add KG yet, and most of us assumed the team would only grow after a playoff loss. However, most pointed out that a team can’t grow if the individual players’ ceilings have been close to maximized.

Another major move was drafting a Large Turkish Man with a #2...

Was that a bad move….............. or another Pritch-slap?

be playing in Europe for the next couple of years. He was never going to play in the NBA next year so reasoning is ignorant. I’m sorry we came off as smug. There are a few smug Blazer fans. No question. I’m also not quite sure how sympathy and pity are bad qualities. I guess if someone were to take that post out of context and not bother to to read the thread Dave referenced, they could certainly take it that way.

For my part, I’ll try not to annoy you. However, if you come into the Blazers Edge, be ready to be bombarded by die-hard Blazer fans. It’s kind of logical when you think about it and whining about it is like whining about the sun setting in the west. It kind of just happens, and a savvy person might even expect it. No offense.

What, you trying to bring me into this?

I like their team. Their GM is decisive, which I definitely like.

My only concern would be that two of their key players, Roy and Oden, haven’t been able to stay healthy.

In fact, if you asked me to name one player Oden reminds me of, I’d have to say Sam Bowie—nice player, gifted player, just couldn’t stay away from the injury bug. I hope it doesn’t work out that way for Oden, but he’s got some congenital issues that I fear will predispose him to the infirmary.

While I could care less about Blazers fans.

The whole “In KP we trust” has been annoyingly smug. Especially, because a year ago it was Bulls fans spouting the line “In Pax we trust”. Hell, MJ was a genius for his 1st year or so when he found a way to unloaded a bunch of bad contracts. Knicks fans were in love with Isiah at first because he made a bunch of creative moves. It’s easy to look good as a GM with a young team that’s all potential. I respect what Kevin has done in terms of drafting pieces that fit together, but there’s a lot that can go wrong on the way to a championship. And most GMs don’t look nearly as pretty when the stakes are raised higher. It becomes a lot easier to talk yourself into stupid moves once you get closer to that championship.

we’re 3 years deep in this. And Brandon Roy was an All Star his second year. And Lamarcus Aldridge was on the Sophomore All star team, and widely regarded as one of the best up and coming Power Forwards. And Rudy Fernandez was rated as the 3rd best prospect for Rookie of the Year behind Greg Oden and Michael Beasley. And he got rid of Zach Randolph and his hideous contract.

I could go on and on and on. The point is, do your mother effing research before you start spouting about this stuff rather than just verbally throwing up all over your computer. Your examples were a joke when it came to GM”s by the way, as it is pretty much common knowledge that KP has done a hell of a lot more to create a potential dynasty than Paxon or Thomas ever did.

You can't freaking wait...

....until the Blazers play their single road game against a team from the Eastern Conference that they had a real rivalry against 15 years ago, because they’re going to win, and they’re not going to tie the game first!!

Is that what you were saying? Because that’s one of the lamest challenges I’ve ever seen. Sheesh. You could at least brag that you’re going to win a playoff series, or something like that, rather than bragging about one of the most meaningless regular season games, on the road against a non-Western Conference team in December or January. If that’s truly the pinnacle of the Blazers’ success for you, then you’ve set the bar a little low.

Me? I can’t wait for the ~two years it’ll take for the Bulls to once again be a perennial power and playoff team, to make multiple trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals. It’s going to be great. Maybe if the Blazers are any good then, the we’ll have another rivalry!!

I don't remember wallace's deal,

but wasn’t he playing out a contract year before he signed with the bulls? Additionally, MT, we ought to temper our expectations, considering that every single move over last offseason and this one (barring the acquisition of jones and trading randolph) has not translated on the court yet. Oden, Rudy, Bayless and Batum are all great picks to acquire, and definitely says something about Pritchard’s ability to do business in the draft, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that KP has a great eye for talent. I am hyped up right now, but I also am of the opinion that a player’s ability to play in the nba can’t be completely 100% gauged until the guy is actually in the nba. We have a lot of eggs, but we don’t know if/when they are going to hatch.

Hey Samuel Clemens do your own research.

Do you know what genius John Paxson was after three years? The Bulls got into the playoffs in his 2nd season with 47 wins and into the 2nd round in his 3rd season after being the worst team in the league for a span of five years and losing #2 overall pick to career ending stupidity. He’s the one that made pawning guys off on Isiah popular with Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry a trend. Getting Isiah to take a scorer that doesn’t play defense isn’t exactly difficult.

Throwing out making the Sophomore All-Star game as an accomplishment is the height of stupidity. Followed closely by hyping Rudy for 3rd place in the ROY race. If your going to call someone out on another team’s blog make sure to bring your brain and learn your history.

not only that

but Pritchard had said in past years he was using what Paxson did as an example. The ‘culture’, ‘our type of guys’, stuff.

But that’s all fluff if the picks don’t get incredible talent (and you don’t re-sign the ‘culture’ guys for 5 years). They have Oden we now have Rose. We’ll see, I guess.

please remove

this thread. I could just ignore it but its still such a waste of internet space. Lets all just be thankful that Isiah hasn’t been brought in by either team. Im glad the blazers are doing great and they have three rookies to be excited about next year and some great young pieces. I dont see them going deep into the playoffs though, but if they do, good job blazers.

As for the city of Portland, it kind of reminds me of the country of Sweden. Wonderfully efficient, well planned, friendly, clean and full of white people. Its good that a small city most people outside the United States, hell even outside the west coast, have never heard of will gain more attention if there basketball team succeeds.

The view from Sacramento

We have all come off the ledge. We’re cool with the Thompson pick. We were just greatly disappointed to watch Augustin and Bayless disappear right before our eyes, painfully similar to watching Brandan Wright and Joakim Noah go 8-9 before our 10 pick last year.

We were cool with the Blazers Edge post. It’s not their fault that we were mad/stupid/mad/stupid/stupid/mad/funny/mad/stupid/drunk/funny/mad/high/stupid. The evening was like a Thanksgiving dinner when old Uncle Lou has one too many.

By and large, the Blazers fans were cool, too. There were only a couple that came over to our site and wanted to start something, and you can’t judge the fan base on a couple of knuckleheads. They are justifiably excited after some tough years. I know how that feels, and I know you guys do, too.

Congratulations again on snagging Rose. After the Kings I have always liked and rooted for the Bulls (actually was a Bulls fan before the Kings came to Sac – Sloan, Van Lier, Love, Walker…OK, I’m old). I hope you jack some guys back east this year.

I'm sorry!!!

I got a little agro up there and want to say I’m sorry to all the Bulls and Blazers Edge people on this thread! I just think that this thing got a little out of control, I certainly thought the original post was out of line, but it is a Bulls blog and you guys are entitled to whatever the heck you want to post here! I just don’t think anyone realizes how insane us Blazers Edge people are about posting and reading this stuff. We’re really involved fans, and take our team very seriously, it’s a civic pride, cultural, historical, family thing for us here in Portland. Anyway, while I do totally disagree with this original post, and feel it is within our rights to come here and defend ourselves, I also realize I took it too far in my anger and general attitude of how I said what I said. Here’s to a civil discussion in the future (and PS “your friendly bulls blogger”, KP has modeled this team from San Antonio regarding the culture, etc… He worked there and saw how a successful franchise is built. Please do correct me if I’m wrong (with a link to an article or something) but I’ve never read about him modeling us after the bulls.) Anyway, thanks for accepting my apology and please don’t hold it against the other Blazers Edge peeps!

The link probably won't exist

Since it was a newspaper article from the last time the Bulls played Portland (I think it was in January?). He didn’t say “we model our franchise after the Bulls”, but he did talk about how he liked what Paxson was doing, picking successful college players, signing FA’s with good work ethic, etc. Since the Bulls and Blazers had the same problem of underachieving teams that were often lazy, they took the same approach. Paxson has just had a head start because he’s been the GM for 5 years now. \

Ah then there are two references

Because I distinctly remember an article in the Tribune talking about how Pritchard was basically doing what Paxson did. I think it was before the game when they went into overtime, and Ben Wallace was a dumbass and decided to not cover Aldridge, and Joe Smith had a huge game.

by mark twain on Jun 28, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You forget who was guarding Joe Smith.

Travis Outlaw, a very lanky 6’9’’ 215 lb combo forward, was trying to stop Joe Smith from posting him up. Aldridge held his own in the rebounding battle with Ben Wallace. Outlaw got hammered. The fact that Aldridge didn’t switch onto Joe Smith would be more the coach’s fault if anything.

Sorry for the pointless comment.

It was late at night, and I felt like posting something for whatever reason. Yeah, I read the comment. I think it’s widely known that Pritchard is following the Paxson plan of building from the ground up with “character” guys. Whoever denies this hasn’t been paying attention.

Bulls fans

While we consider your hatred for our team to be a very good sign, it still makes no sense that of all the other teams and fanbases in the league that Bulls fans would choose to hate on Blazer fans.
Blazer fans have endured more suffering that any basketball fans have gone through in the past ten years. Losing game 7 to the Lakers in the 2000 WCF, enduring horrific draft scenarios up until 2006, having our only professional franchise in town be labeled as Jailblazers and considered the laughing stock of the league.
Did we abandon our team when times were bad? No. Many of us stuck by and dreamed of the future when the Blazers would once again be an organization we could be proud of.
Are we not entitled to a little praise for our GM for making brilliant moves? (You have to admit the man is a basketball genius.) And how dare you call us smug after shoving the tired MJ vs SB crap every chance you get!
Congrats on getting Rose, we hope to see you guys in the Finals soon. Keep hating on us, it only makes us stronger.

So we decided just to call ourselves "The Band". -Richard Manuel

despite my bretherens defense against this thread….

I agree. we as a whole are fairly cocky arrogant, and pretty down right annoying when it comes to our future….

as to our past…well..who’d know it better than a bunch of bulls fans as alot is shared knot in knot with portland…seperated by confrences and a few longitude and latitude lines….aren’t we all the same? fans of teams with a longing desire to return to greatness…..given the bulls’s greatness was a little longer lived than portlands…by about a half a decade…but still…the same desire to knock the reigning champs of the respective confrences off their blocks?

ah, on to the finals I say…...LET’S GO SETTLE THIS ON THE COURT AGAIN!!!!

;) keep up the good bloogin I say…..

until november… good luck with the rest of your offseason…

Their improvement hinges solely on 1 player

Dwight has to get a better all-around game in the post, which could transform him into 2000 Shaq (unlikely though). No one expects Hedo to have as good of a season as he just did, and their backcourt is weak.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 30, 2008 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How do you take your conference seriously?

The championship plan for two big time franchises is to win the 2010 LeBron sweepstakes! That’s got to be about as bad as Ruben Patterson highlighting the jail blazers era by slapping a ref in the face with a towel, right? Or was it spitting on a fan? You get the idea.

by premthegrem on Jul 1, 2008 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares about conference superiority.

And honestly, it’s called rebuilding. The Nets were basically the Blazers from the early decade, tons of talent that ultimately went nowhere (except 2 Finals appearances). They are starting from scratch now, all franchises have to do it. The Knicks are an abomination, yet the Sonics, Clippers, and Grizzlies are no better in that regard, the Knicks just do it with more flair.

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 1, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand about rebuilding,

even the fact that not every team can do it completely through the draft, as PTB is trying to do. What peeves me is the almost scripted manner in which the Nets are dumping salary, the article by Woj that essentially confirms in national media what everybody knows regarding the Nets’ plan to grab LeBron, and most of all, the seeming apathy that the Cavaliers showed in the draft, even with the “LeBron Sweepstakes” being as high profile as they are. Has Cleveland given up on the LeBron era? I realize that I obviously know next to nothing about what Danny Ferry is planning in free agency this year, but it seems mighty odd that Ferry is doing nothing bold or dramatic to get his franchise player to tie himself to Cleveland, especially if that is what it is going to take to bring a championship to Cleveland.

BTW: When two franchises in one of the biggest sports markets in Cleveland attempt to dump salary in the hope of attracting one specific player to their team two years from now…one can say that is kind of pathetic.

I see Howard giving Noah (does he play 5?) problems

While you have a better backcourt, they have very good forwards. Nelson is also pretty serviceable. If you are not worried about the magic. Then what team/s do you predict getting in the way of making it to the conference finals? Us Blazer fans are worried keeping an eye on the hornets and jazz…and i guess lakers.

President of the Petteri Koponen fan club.

by Sabonis4Ever on Jul 1, 2008 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Howard gives any center problems, he's built like a freaking truck.

Nelson is an inferior version of Ben Gordon, and he’s running the point. Not a good idea. They don’t have any sort of physical presence inside to keep Howard from being attacked in the post by 2-3 defenders. He may be physically strong enough to handle it, but I wouldn’t want my franchise player getting hacked at nonstop for an entire season.

Noah will have problems with physical centers, he just has to add muscle. Tyson Chandler was a stick for several years as well, now he has the body of a strong defensive center.

In the East the Celtics are obviously the favorite again. After that it’s pretty debateable. The Pistons could make the ECF again with the same crew, the Wizards might actually achieve something if their team stayed healthy, the Raptors could surprise some people, and the Magic could get a MVP season from Howard and make it too.

I wouldn’t count out the Spurs at all in the West. They are at their best coming off an early exit in the playoffs, and their front office will no doubt address their need for some athleticism off the bench this summer.

by Ozzie Montana on Jul 1, 2008 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spurs are the opposite of Star Trek movies

The odd years are the good ones, in Spurs land.

I think the Bulls could EASILY surpass the Magic this season, as long as Rose comes as advertised and he helps Tyrus turn into a dunking fool and everyone else continues to improve and etc and blah blah. You guys can likely get sumthin’ good for Hinrich and Nocioni from someone somewhere, and further add more pieces that trump the Magics.

Obviously Howard is bigger and stronger and faster than anyone the Bulls got at center, but he is a turnover machine and if you rush him and harass him, he WILL turn it over. If he was a good post passer, you couldn’t risk sending so many help defenders at him, but he ain’t a good passer.

Howard was on my award winning, life affirming CHAMPIONSHIP fantasy team, and his turnovers helped me never win that category, but his rebounding/blocks/scorin’ helped make me a God damn Champ that all the kids in the ol’ neighborhood can look up to.

I hope for Howard’s sake, that he LEARNS A POST MOVE. He is very predictable in the post, and luckily enough it works simply because he is such a beast. Unless you’re Shaq-big (which he isn’t), you can’t just rely on beasting people forever as a top center. The best centers learn moves, tricks, learn a soft touch around the basket, to help combat the loss of athleticism as they get older.

Of course, Howard is still extremely young, so he’s got time.

The rest of the Bulls team can overtake them this year, provided the expected bounce back years happen.
