Last rumour: Hinrich to Denver

Here they come... Now that we draft Rose, the rumours about trades envolving our guards already will to increase. The first one was about Hinrich going to Denver. The Rocky Mountain News don't tell who might be envolved besides Hinrich.

There are rumblings that, with Chicago having drafted point guard Derrick Rose with the top pick, Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich could be on the move, with Denver a possible landing spot.

It's just a possibility, but, what kind of trade would you guys do? Do you think that that this can really happen?

I think it's certainly possible

just because Denver is a high-payroll team and isn’t messing around about wanting to contend.

That said, they’ll also likely love a deal that reduces their present-year salary as well, because they’re currently slated to pay the Luxury Tax.

The big problem is that all their big money guys (except for Camby) extend past 2010. So even though I actually like Nene, it looks like any deal will require them to take both Hinrich AND Nocioni off the books.

Denver

Is one of the only team that has a surplus of bigs (and large contracts) for the Bulls to trade with. Otherwise, they would be trading small for big and there aren’t enough quality bigs on teams to do that type of trade. I actually like Nene too, but I don’t think Noce wouldn’t have to be included. If they want to get rid of Kirk, they should be able to go straight up for Camby or Nene.

On the other hand, I cannot find a team for BG. He is bound to be a unrestricted FA next year.

and they're clearly not planning on playing their draft picks

(f’real, why take Wright and Randolph in successive years? yikes)

I’m ok with Nene on the team if the end-result through whatever combination of deals is the contracts of Hinrich and Nocioni gone. It’s all about long-term salary (not Hinrich-hate, I swear!), so swapping Hinrich for Nene is actually worse in that regard.

and while the Warriors do have that exception…man, what would the Bulls need to do and entice them?

The payscale for intl 2nd rounders is actually a very big deal.

The ability to offer a competitive contract is the whole reason these guys are 2nd round picks.

by alec on Jun 27, 2008 11:59 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Other factors

1) They’re not ready to play in the NBA
2) They already are under contract making it too expensive for a team to draft them in the first round where they would have to pay them(money down the drain, remember Krause and Kukoc)
3) They’re not sure if they even want to come to the NBA

The Sonics still took Serge Ibaka in the first round after his agent told everyone not to. I believe they now have to eat what they would have to pay Ibaka because he’s a first round pick.

What I can't see, though, is Denver acquiring Hinrich

when they already have Chucky Atkins, AI and J. R. Smith (and Anthony Carter). Chucky’s their “pure” PG, while the other two or three are the scoring guards (whether combo or not).

As for BG, he’d do fine in the western conference because he won’t be asked to play defense there. He’s a natural fit for the Suns, and I believe Portland could really use his veteran leadership and dead-eye shooting too. So could the Sonics. I guess the Spurs, Rockets, Jazz and maybe Lakers would ask for defense, and so those teams might not be interested. But everyone else should be.

Kirk would give them a guard who can actually play defense against SG's

Atkins isn’t a “pure” PG, he’s an outside gunner, which is why they missed him last season. They need someone who can shoot from the perimeter and play D against bigger guards. He wouldn’t be an ideal fit next to AI, but he’d fit a lot better than anyone else on their roster.

What about San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston? That stereotype of Western Conference basketball is about 10 years out of date?

I don't get this sentiment.

Ben Gordon is a specialist—an offensive specialist. Why would a team w/ already good offense go for something like that? Wouldn’t a team w/ a good team defense that struggles to score value you him more? Think of the Celtics w/ Ray Allen. Or the Spurs if they had Gordon. Or New Orleans w/ Peja. Or the Lakers w/ Radmanovich. All very good to great defensive teams that were able to hide definite mediocre to bad defenders because they brought some offense. That’s why the Bulls need Gordon.

Allen actually got good at defense in Boston, although he hadn’t been for years. Go Thom Thibadeau!!!!

yeah

but what are we getting in return

by Blacknight23 on Jun 28, 2008 11:42 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Camby, Atkins, and a pick for Hinrich

makes a tiny, tiny bit of sense. Atkins has an expiring contract, but he is also terrible and nothing like Derrick Rose. Camby is a good example for Noah and Tyrus, and a frontline of Gooden and Camby gives us a chance to compete right now if we’re in that position. But I’d also want Noah and Tyrus to actually play.

Second possibility: I would jump on Hinrich + Nocioni for Camby + Atkins + Hunter, giving us miles and miles of beautiful cap space. ESPN Trade Machine says currently says it doesn’t work, but that might only be until July 9th. The salaries are within 125%.

by YaoPau on Jun 27, 2008 10:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Pax wants the young guys to play

He knows that Rose (maybe) only get to that star level three years from now, like CP3 and Williams did. And he said this is going to be a important year to TT. So, I think that he really wants TT and NOAH to play… But if we could send Gooden to Denver in some sort of deal envolving Hinrich, then TT and NOAH could play alongside Camby

Please Pax!!! Can you trade Hughes???

by bull83 on Jun 27, 2008 11:04 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

In regards to TT, does that mean

if he doesn’t show signs of a consistent outside shot, then he’s officially labeled a bust?

Atkins is fine as a backup pg

and they’ll need a backup if Hinrich’s gone.

I like either one of those deals. One worry though is that Camby really isn’t a good fit next to Noah/Tyrus. I’d actually like Gooden better.

Kirk

still has good trade value considering all his haters . If they are looking for a salary dump. New York is still looking for a point gaurd. What about Kirk & Noce or Gooden for Marbury (buy out) & David Lee? The trade exception could take back a bad contract or unload Gooden too.

I know they want to get under the cap for Lebron (not going to happen – JZ in NJ), so if not use the trade exception in a seperate trade to take back a bad contract.

We lose him after the season anyway. He is the only post scorer we have.

by chlutz508 on Jun 27, 2008 12:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think we should halt all Hinrich talk

Until Ben Gordon is dealt with. Why would Kirk be dealt for some bigs if Ben just eventually leaves? That leaves a pretty gaping hole in the backcourt in terms of either scoring or defense.

If Gordon is signed or takes the QO (somehow I doubt he does that), then dealing Hinrich or Noce for a quality big man becomes of utmost importance. I actually am in the camp of keeping Kirk unless it’s for a real good value (Nene would be a good fit as a backup bruiser/banger, but his contract is pretty terrible).

Also, Paxson was in top form on Waddle and Sivly. He went on a nice diatribe against all the “speculated rumors” that go on in the league. And the Miami Heat coach used the phrase “Due dilligence.”

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 11:20 AM CDT   0 recs

We can talk about it

Matt could just add an editorial comment at the end of the post that says “Kirk’s moving trucks cannot leave the dock until Ben Gordon is resigned to an extension”.

Moving Kirk is dependent on securing Gordon. I do not want to enter next season with Hinrich and Hughes as our guards on the bench. 24 million of players I don’t want coming off the bench wants me to see Rose and Thabo play 48 minutes a night.

by NBA Observer on Jun 27, 2008 11:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I know I'm getting into sketchy hearsay territory

but supposedly Sam Smith said on the CSN draft show that the Bulls are going to try and aggressively get Gordon’s deal done. Maybe for that purpose.

In general I agree that it’d be nice to have all your bases covered, but what if a great Hinrich deal comes along in the meantime?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jun 27, 2008 11:51 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well can't we consider Kirk a unique player on the market?

He has 5 years NBA experience, legit defender, decent offense. Other than Dumars shipping out Billups or Baron Davis opting out, Kirk is probably the best veteran PG available. If teams are asking for him, they would most likely wait it out.

I’m assuming Ben and Lou’s extensions don’t take that long to wrap up. It’s not that difficult, 5/50 million was the offer last year, they both played poorly, the offer shouldn’t be more than 55 million. It sucks that they were lowballed, but now I’m kind of glad we did instead of having to pay Deng 15 million a year.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 11:56 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why the misinformation?

How would not having low-balled Deng resulted in the Bulls paying him $15/yr?

by tyger1147 on Jun 27, 2008 12:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm saying that had they payed what Deng and Gordon "deserved" in 2007

It would have been more than 10 million a year. Perhaps not as high as 15.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 12:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahh. My fault then.

Taking into account their youth and potential and production up to that point, yeah, I could have seen them getting $13, maaaaybe $15 per in a different situation, on a different team, etc. Sorry.

by tyger1147 on Jun 27, 2008 12:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

and is more tradeable than Gordon or Deng for cap reasons if anything.
