All things Asik
The Blazers agreed to send Asik to the Bulls for three future second-round picks. I think Asik could be one of the steals of the second round ... if he ever comes over. He's a hyperactive rebounder and shot-blocker with good athleticism. John Hollinger said his numbers suggest he should've been a top-10 pick. He's a talent, but he may be in Turkey for the next few years developing his game.
From Hollinger in his pre-draft analysis of Euros:
Omer Asik, a Turkish center who played for Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul this past season. In 279 Euroleague minutes -- granted, a smallish sample -- his performance projects to 12.2 points and 13.5 boards per 40 minutes, with 52.3 percent shooting and a 15.23 PER. He blocks shots, too, setting a Euroleague Round of 16 record for rejections this year.
He's 22, 7-feet tall with a decent frame and relatively new to the game and still improving. So what's the hang-up? Apparently he signed a five-year deal to stay in Turkey with no buyout, meaning he might not play in the NBA for a long time. That would be a shame. I have little doubt that Asik should be a lottery pick, but the contract issue may leave him as a mid-second rounder.
And here's the DraftExpress.com profile, which says that Asik's current contract is only for 2 years.
(big ups to the commenters for digging a lot of this up)

Not for 3 3rd rounders. Its like trading 3 for 1 we will get someone else else next year its just a shame that Jordan fell that far and we couldnt snatch him.

Normally, yes
But the Bulls really do have a great deal of under-25 talent. If Paxson is unsure that 2nd-round picks in the next few years will even make the club, then take a flier on the 7-foot hyperactive rebounder and shotblocker from Turkey.

It sounds like it's Weems + two 2nds
So whatever, we lose the #50 pick the next two seasons, then get Asik on board right after that. It doesn’t hurt us, and everything I read about him makes me think he’s a better prospect than DeAndre anyway.

One of the picks we traded(reportedly) was NYKnicks
so that should be a high 2nd rounder, like a #39 again! But I think we all can agree the Bulls need quality, not quantity so if it is indeed like adding a top10 overall(in 2010) its worth a shot. I don’t think the Bulls would have taken Weems for themselves with CDR available(I assume Denver told them who to pick).

Sabonis
He was good…. I mean Asik sounds great its just I look at these second rounders like lottery tickets. At best there is a 1% chance this guy will be good but that also says theres a 3% chance that one of those 3 2nd rounders could of been better. If he is Sabonis he should of gone in the top 8 and its a steal but I dont think this guy is it. Sabonis passed way too good, shot threes well, was a decent defender, 50 pounds heavier, 3 inches taller and Bilas’ favorite 10 inches longer.
by TRiCioNeRo on Jun 27, 2008 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Noone's compared this guy to Sabonis, except for you
The team is overloaded with young players and, if Gordon and Deng are resigned, getting too close to luxury tax territory. Especially given the recent incident with the Spurs and Splitter, I think you’ll see fewer and fewer under contract Euro’s taken in the first round. This has the potential to be a great move for the Bulls.

Maybe he was referring to another Bradley
because this guy is nothing like him. A Sabonis in the second sounds great to me, even if we have to wait. If he gets good, we can probably get the team to release him with some cash. Money talks even if the contract says no right now.

Based on like 30 seconds of viewing
And since it’s a 2nd round pick, it really isn’t that big of a deal.
Brush up on your history, Arvydas Sabonis remains one of the biggest “What ifs” in NBA history for coming to the league to late to ever have a legit impact.

Random Asik tidbit from BallinEurope.com
From April 22:
Ever since Omer Asık arrived at Fenerbahce, he has been lost under the radar as Tanjevic killed his ability to score, and you can call him another victim of the coach as he joins the list next to Preldzic. No NBA for him this year.. Before FB: 35 minutes, 15 points, 11 rebounds. 2 blocks and 2 dimes.. After FB: 20 minutes, 7 points.. The rest is history!
Well I (Christophe) have to add, Omer Asik is now playing for a Top 3 team while playing before for a go-down candidate (Alpella). This may also be a reason. Don’t always blame the coach.

bulls completely screwed us.
Actually I think the entire second round (from the 27th pick of the first) has been dictated by other teams for the blazers (Houston hardballed us for Batum). Anyway, if Asik ends up coming over within the next two years, I’d say you guys totally rolled us with this deal.
by premthegrem on Jun 27, 2008 1:29 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, you still have 16 or 17 players on your roster
So it’s not like Arthur, Dorsey, or Asik would’ve made much of a difference. But yes, we rolled you.
by YaoPau on Jun 27, 2008 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
dang,
espn indicates that the deal involved only two 2nd rounders instead of three (from the bulls). That definitely cements the thought that we got rolled.

Asik's measurements
Asik measured out pretty well. His measurements from Eurocamp, ala nbadraft.net. He at least seems like a big guy with a good body. Maybe a little on the slow side, but not as bad as Aaron Gray.

About 45 seconds in he hits a free throw.
Anytime somebody’s highlight clip includes them making a foul shot, I’m not that impressed.
But I’ll defer to the experts that are calling this a steal.

Man, I really like Hollinger and have defended him many a times
But I sure as hell hope he has more evidence than 279 Euroleague minutes to claim that Asik is a top-10 talent. I have NO problem translating Euroleague results and proclaiming that a player will likely be productive in the NBA, or that a player is likely to develop into a quality NBA player, but 279 minutes? Yeesh.
That said, I am excited for the pick, as the consensus seems to be that he can play, and I have to presume that the Bulls know something about his eventual availability to come over to the NBA. Please, nobody remind me for my past enthusiasm for Dragan Tarlac.

Weirdly enough
I also like the fact that we can stash him for a few years – though hopefully not five. The We’ve got enough youth and talent on this team not to further clutter it. Hopefully he comes over later as a stronger, more skilled and experienced 25 y.o. center. I didn’t want to see two rooks on this team!

its kinda interesting to see that paxson acutally paid attention to other guys while the draft was going on. to give up 3 picks in the second round for this guy means that he gotta be atleast something. and im not sure if u guys know anything about this, but during all the draft talks yesterday, i heard on some raido program about drazen petrovic’s son or nephew? supposdley hes really good. but i cant really find much on him.

Was i the only
one who was pissed they didnt select CDR with the 2nd rd pick? I mean that was the steal of the draft IMO and we totally dropped the ball for who Sonny Weems who appearantly over night turned into a foreign job we wont see for a few years. I realise we are gaurd heavy but you cannot pass up a kid like CDR, not to mention he and D Rose were teamates last year. Now we get to watch him fill it up for NJ. ;-(

We are talking second rounders here
and we already have a roster full of young guys. Likely he would have ended up in d-league anyway. At least in a couple of years when Rose is more comfortable in his role we will have a big guy with experience come in. They talk like he is first round quality. And he doesn’t look like he is a twiggy kind of foreign center like you often see. I don’t mind this pick at all.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
by cranscape on Jun 27, 2008 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
CDR wont go to the D-League
But if Pax wants to re-sign Gordon, wich I think he wants, we wouldn’t need CDR for nothing. We already have a lot of guards.
I confess I was a little piss off when Pax selected Weems. But if the all point of that pick was to get Asik, Pax deserves my apologies. We needed a big man and he acquired us one. I just hope he improves his game and when he comes to chitown help us getting that tittle that we want so much
Please Pax!!! Can you trade Hughes???

From the little iI've been able to read and watch
it sounds like Asik at least likes to mix it up under the basket. He’s not some 3 point shooting 7 foot euro.
I like that he holds the blocks record for whatever league he’s been playing in—much like Noah set a new ncaa tourny blocks record. He doesn’t solve the post offense issue, but I’ll take interior post defense anytime.

Yes...I love the Asik pick
Asik fits a specific role on this team for the future – a true center-sized complement to Joakim Noah at the 5. (Yes, Aaron Gray is a nice player, but he’s not anywhere near so good that you don’t seek an upgrade there). I’m a huge Noah fan, but if he’s your starting 5, you need a reserve with more size and bulk who can play minutes against the Dwight Howards of the world.
The other thing is that I’m a huge fan of interior defense – looking at teams I’d like to consider as a model, such as the Celtics (Garnett, Perkins, P.J. Brown) and the Pistons (R. Wallace, B. Wallace, McDyess, Maxiell, etc.), I have serious visions of Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah anchoring one of the best defenses in the league, and if everything works out as planned then Asik can contribute in this area as well.

I like that we passed on CDR
IMO, this draft was all about D Rose, although hopefull this Asik dude turns out pretty decent too. Maybe this was somethign Pax, considered, maybe not, but its just my general thoughts. Rose is coming into a difficult situation. He has so many expectations…to be both a great player and a great leader. That involes really meshing with his new teammates. He is entering a new uncomfortable world, and he needs to make many efforts to adjust and open up and get to know the team. Adding CDR could halt that progress cuz then Rose comes in with a former teammate and he may fall back on him since they know each other rather than spending more time with his new teammates and doing his own thing. Just my $0.02.
Also…am I the only one that was kinda excited about Weems. His highlight videos on Youtube look SICK. He is pretty much identical to TT in athleticism and he can shoot. I realize we have no spot for him on our roster, but I kinda wanted to see this guy develop.
by Pax_4_Prez on Jun 30, 2008 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not to mention...
...that Asik looks to be much that Gray isn’t. (According to draftexpress per 40 stats) he’s good on the offensive boards, great at shot-blocking at stealing (for a big man), and he gets to the line a lot. Most who’ve seen him say he’s smooth & fluid and hyperactive out there.
Not only does it all sound good, it’s a skill-set that differs significantly from Gray, and in that way certainly worth taking a small risk on.

A couple things are wrong there I think
I believe the pick from Denver was already gone.
And the Bulls did trade their own ‘09 2nd round pick in the Wallace deal.
So it was the Knicks ‘09 pick, plus two of their own from 2010 on.

...and said 3 future draft picks so I think they have no idea. This link may have it right,
In the three-team deal, Chicago got center Omer Asik, drafted No. 36 by Portland. The Trail Blazers got Denver’s pick, a 2010 Bulls’ second-round pick and New York’s 2009 second-round pick, which had belonged to Chicago.

The Denver pick is what they got for sending Denver Sonny Weems.
So essentially the Bulls gave up this year’s 2nd, NYK’s 2009 2nd-round pick and the Bulls’ 2010 2nd-round pick? Sure, that works.

Sounds right....
...I don’t know if they even need to pick up more 2nd rounders. As of right now it’s a pretty full roster. They could probably get a 2nd rounder for Shannon Brown or Ced Simmons. I think having Ced as a bench warmer though is better than a 2nd rounder. He has a little upside still.

I mean, I guess it depends on how big “huge” is, but I think I mentioned this somewhere, and I’m a little unsure: can’t the Bulls sign him for whatever they want? So if he’s that good in two years, he’ll be like a top FA w/ the Bulls the only NBA in the negotiations? And he’ll only being going into his age-24 season.

We bought out Khryapa to help him get another contract
It was timed for his benefit. By getting the #1 pick the guaranteed salary increased a few million. Since we’re cap needlers in the 2nd round the focus shifted to players with contracts we don’t have to pay NOW.
Also, CDR deserves a chance to play now. He wouldn’t really get that with us until we move mountains like Hughes or Hinrich.

This fact is only important due to the fact that it looks like Khryapa and Asik share the same agent(s), as well as Aaron Gray:
http://www.draftexpress.com/agents/Justin-Zanik-62/
I believe one of Matt’s prior finds was that Asik’s current coach had buried him on the bench of the top team (Fenerbahce Ulker) after he was kicking butt on the lower team (Abella? Andella?).
If you triangulate these facts – Paxson knows the agent and has treated the agent’s players professionally; the player may not be totally happy in his current situation; the Bulls are an internationally-known team, etc…there may be a darned good chance of bringing him over in a year and a half.

Back in the days
When Krause thought he was Matlock and went sleuthing around Europe.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
Then Krause went the next 10 years without adding another rotation player from Europe, despite blathering on to anyone that would listen that he was some sort of pioneer. Probably the single thing that pissed me off the most about Krause towards the end of his tenure was him constantly talking about how the Bulls worked out Peja Stojakovic when he was 17 … umm, WHO CARES?!
I’m sure Jerry is somewhere right now smiling about what a damn pioneer he was.

2nd Round, 2nd pick, about to turn 22 years old
6’10”, 192. Didn’t come over for 3 years. Put up a rookie PER of 15.4. Sounds similar. (not in play, just in plan)

He was a good rookie, too, when he finally joined the club
I remember his disappointment that MJ retired; his assassin 3-pointer to win in Milwaukee in the 4th game of the season, after getting burned on defense and giving up the lead to Larry Krystowiak; his soft -touch shot to win in Orlando (Christmas?); his crazy bank-3-pointer to shut up Reggie Miller after Miller was bowing to the Stadium crowd; and his game-winner against the Knicks in the playoffs when Scottie sat out the play. He hit four game-winning shots that season, if memory serves me right.

WRONG!!! Khalid El-Amin!
In 50 games in the NBA, Khalid El-Amin averaged 6.3 points with 2.9 assists, 1.6 rebounds, 1.0 steals, 1.1 turnovers and 2.0 fouls in 18.6 minutes. Those numbers are Tyrus Thomas-like!

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 11:48 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Paxson said in his MullyHanley interview
that they’d targeted Asik as a guy who if there was any way they could get him they were going to try to do it. He said they were surprised to see CDR there, but they felt Asic was the better guy for them.
He also said that in two years Asik would have been not just a first rounder, but a lottery pick.

I'm glad almost for the sole reason
that the Bulls don’t have to have any spotlight off of Derrick Rose today. Having his college teammate there too sort of adds an unnecessary storyline.
(I acknowledge this is an incredibly lame reason, but the better one is that they don’t need to use a roster spot now anyway)

Language Fun Fact
Asik’s last name means “he who loves”, essentially “one who loves God” in the sufi context that Turkey is so steeped in. For some reason this makes him seem like a badass to me. Unlike, say, Kevin Love… not sure why that is…

The videos aren't bad
He stakes out good position even when absorbing contact from the attacking offensive player. With the length he can block most of those shots and definitively alter them.
19 blocks in one game is incredible.

...I learned on YouTube. Look, the dood is twenty and blocked his age in shots in ONE FREAKIN GAME! When have you ever heard of a dood blocking 20 shots in a game? Anywhere? Did Sabonis ever block 20 shots? If he ever gets a handle, maybe he goes for a Dream like QUADRUPLE DOUBLE??!!!!!OMfG

by YaoPau on Jun 28, 2008 3:09 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is in a series. From Wikipedia...
He has set a new Euroleague Top 16 record for blocked shots with 19 total. The only other player to surpass 15 blocks in the round was Robertas Javtokas of Lietuvos Rytas in 2005-06. With 3.8 blocks per game so far in the round, Aşık also owns the highest average yet recorded in the Top 16 too.

Speaking of Khalid El-Amin....
....we have a sighting. He was playing for the Telekom team which lost to Asik’s team in the Turkish Finals.
http://www.euroleague.net/item/32819
Fener led throughout the game, racing out to an early 16-6 lead and going up 26-17 after 10 minutes. The lead grew to 35-21 midway through the second period, before Khalid El-Amin pulled Telekom back within 6. Mirsad Turkcan ensured Fener a 50-40 lead at halftime. The advantage swelled to 17 in the third quarter and Telekom never seriously challenged after that.
Back to Asik – what’s more promising is the fact that, though Asik isn’t mentioned at all in games 1, 2, and 5, he had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks in game 3, and 14 rebounds in game 4. He also had a 12 point, 15 rebound game earlier in the playoffs. I can’t seem to find box scores on that site, only wrap-ups.
It seems like Asik is good enough already to post high-volume numbers in the Turkish League Finals/Playoffs, but I can’t find consistent mentions of his playing time across games. As we know, that can cause frustration. But it may just be editorial license in the write-ups.
by BullsFanInSeattle on Jun 27, 2008 10:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well...
Clearly getting this Asik fellow is a vain attempt to lure Khalid El-Amin out of NBA retirement. The only problem is that he’d have to sit out the mandatory time after a comeback before he is hall of fame eligible again… Khaild knows better.

From YaoPau
Moved out of it’s own fanpost. -ed.
I emailed Jonathan Givony at DraftExpress asking about the discrepancy between what Paxson has said (two years) and what everyone else has said (five). Here’s Givony’s clarification on Asik’s extension:
Hasn’t signed it yet, but he is very close to doing so. Fenerbahce is putting a crapload of pressure on him. They are possibly the most NBA-unfriendly team you’ll find in Europe. That’s why he didn’t play in Treviso for example. They are going to sit on his ass until he signs the contracts, its inevitable.
In a way, that’s really good news that it’s still just two years, and I would think our spending three 2nd round picks on him is a comparable amount of pressure in itself to not sign that extension. Still, though – and this doesn’t seem possible with any front office besides the Bulls’ – I can’t help but think Paxson didn’t do all his homework before shipping out the three picks.

That said, I am excited for the pick, as the consensus seems to be that he can play, and I have to presume that the Bulls know something about his eventual availability to come over to the NBA. Please, nobody remind me for my past enthusiasm for Dragan Tarlac.
