Grizz-Wolves blockbuster: Mayo for Love and more
Just saw it on ESPN:
Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the Memphis Grizzlies that will send the draft rights of Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.
Trying to hash out this money-wise:
Jaric - $6,575,000 $7,100,000 $7,625,000
Walker - $9,052,460 $9,775,280
Buckner - $4,010,005
Miller - $9,128,575 $9,880,957
Cardinal - $6,300,000 $6,750,000
Collins - $6,200,000
(this doesn't include possible buyout figures of unguaranteed contract years)
So, the Grizzlies gain a couple million in cap room this offseason, but sacrifice potential room in 2010 by taking on Jaric.
That, and they gave up one of their most productive, and most popular (based on my experience in Memphis, anyway) player in Mike Miller.
Did they like OJ Mayo that much? I suppose if they think he's star-worthy, he'll turn out to be worth it. They didn't give up any other younger assets or future picks, so there's still plenty of things they can do.
Minnesota gets precious 2010 cap room, and some productive players. I actually did think Foye/Mayo was a good combination (and McCants as 6th man).

More potential cap savings
Potential buyout savings for Walker. Sure, everyone loves money…but he may give up extra not to be a Griz.

A comment from that link.
Rumors on several boards indicating that the Mayo trade and the Arthur trade are precursors to a Beasley trade. And these are not Memphis boards – general NBA boards (Portland and others)...
Arthur and Mayo for Beasley? That’s hard to pass up if you already have Wade and Marion.
by tyger1147 on Jun 27, 2008 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
it’s just Mayo or Beasley. If the Heat think Beasley’s better, it’s crazy to deal him because you get Darrell Arthur (the Khryapa of this deal), or that you have a mopey Marion for one season.

i think trading marion for a pg
makes more sense for them.

Memphis just traded for Darrell Arthur
PG Conley
SG Mayo
SF Gay
PF Arthur
C Darko
I’m not so high on Arthur, but there’s plenty of potential in that lineup. At least they’re putting forth some effort this offseason.

Memphis determined to field a starting 5
That will make less than Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry combined, yet still suck just as badly.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
how on earth,
are conley/Mayo/Gay/Arthur worse than Randolph and Curry combined? Are you basing this on stats? I don’t see how you can make a comparison without seeing all the players in action for a year.
by premthegrem on Jun 27, 2008 2:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah...
He just said they would make less, and suck as badly, not that they were worse.
And he’s probably right. But at least the Memphis trio are young players on the upswing. I think Z-Bo and Eddy have both peaked.
I would much rather build a team around Conley Mayo and Gay then the Combo of Zack “Black Hole” Randolph and Eddy “Can’t Jump” Curry.
In fact, I would rather build a team around one of Conley, Mayo or Gay then the combo of Big Z and Easy E.

my point exactly
you can’t really pass judgement on a player till the end of his first year in the league, it just ain’t right. Not only that, but Mayo was a rising prospect throughout the draft process, which means that calling him a bust is even more ludicrous. (I realize that there is a chance.) However, Memphis could have real problems fielding this lineup if they don’t have good trainers and mentors for these kids (in the sense that the core is all young, has no playoff experience whatsoever..) That is also the same problem that I believe the Blazers will face, but to be honest, it’s a great problem to have.
by premthegrem on Jun 27, 2008 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I could pass judgement because they are the Grizzlies
And it’s fun to criticize teams, since that’s what everyone does. I believe Blazers fans are jumping for joy about Bayless, yet you have no idea how he will fare in the NBA correct?

Pritchard's still a diety
wait for a few mistakes, and a 3rd Oden surgery, and then they’ll be taking pot-shots at him like we do with Pax :)

well if the Bobcats have proved anything
it’s that even if you’re terrible, finding local college talent really softens the blow :)

It took me over 12 hours to realize
that Arthur didn’t play for Memphis, but Kansas. I was confusing Arthur and Dorsey. Carry on…

Awwww we didn't get to see Gay-Love in action
Is McHale just getting stupider? Didn’t he learn anything from the Roy-Foye mistake
by shoryuken on Jun 27, 2008 1:04 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, the trade actually makes a lot of sense from his perspective.
I’d say the only reason he picked Mayo was to trade him for love. There was a lot of buzz about him just picking Love at 3, but instead he grabbed Mayo so he could trade him for Love and get something else out of it.
Now, was that the right choice … I dunno. But for what he was aiming for, it was actually a good move.
I was really shocked when I read it.

McHale might think it's a good trade from his perspective
but he needs to get some glasses. A Jefferson/Love frontcourt is too short and will be too slow defensively.
by shoryuken on Jun 27, 2008 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Defensively it could end up being an issue
But offensively, I think this will help out Jefferson tremendously.

McHale's Self Love
Q: “Why would you trade away a talent like O.J. Mayo?”
A: “I did it all for Love.”
Reports are that McHale’s been infatuated with Love for sometime, and there’s some talk that he reminded him of himself.
But I agree—defensively, this frontline is porous, and offensively, this front line is duplicative (and shorter than it should be, in my opinion. McHale is an idiot…

McHale?
In everybody’s opinion McHale is an idiot.
I wonder if his family makes fun of him at holiday get togethers.
I wonder if McHale knows… like he wakes up everyday and checks his email inbox, and is like “oh my god, they still haven’t fired me? What the fuck do I have to do here? All I want is to collect unemployment and spend time with my family!”

Not just Roy-Foye
Don’t forget drafting Ray Allen and swapping him on draft night for “Starbury.”
Allen > Starbury
Roy > Foye
Mayo > Love
For the sake of the Minny fans, McHale shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a phone on draft night.

I’ve learned from a team source that another trade is currently being finalized and should be completed within hour. I do not know the particulars at this time.I’ve heard lots of stuff tonight about a potential deal that would have sent Mike Conley to Portland, but now it appears that will not happen. I don’t know what all the details would have been, but it seems Travis Outlaw would have been involved.
I’m also hearing that Michael Beasley is not involved.

I love this deal for Minny
I’m not so worried about how the pieces fit together; at their stage of overall team development, they should be in asset-acquisition mode, and at this they succeeded 100%. I’m on the record as being a huge fan of Kevin Love, and from a talent standpoint I think history will reflect very well on this trade in favor of Minny.

Love is not a fit in Minnesota
as he and Jefferson are the same type of player, lean 4’s with no defensive skills. I am assuming they are going to stick Love at the 5 and he is going to get killed on both ends of the floor.

It seems he going to be thrown like a ragdoll with he has to go up aganist 5’s everynight.

Jefferson doesn't need to play defense
He was double teamed all year with no one to pass to and still averaged 21 points a game. By adding Miller and Love their offense becomes a 100 times better, and they’re not making the playoffs so defense can suck it.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 27, 2008 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well they won't make the playoffs
because they don’t play defense…
