John Paxson, almost immediately, ruins awesome moment by saying Rose will have to 'earn' his way.

Hernan (FL): Hi, Derrick. Which one of your new bulls teammate do you look more forward to practice with?

Derrick Rose: Tyrus Thomas. He’s used to playing the typ of game tha tI play – the uptempo game.

Gavin (San Diego): Derrick, huge fan…what strenghts for bulls and areas you can still improve?

Derrick Rose: Defensively, we can get better at. Of course, offensively.

gmoney (New Jersey): Rose how does it feel to be put into the role of revivng a storied franchise like Chicago?

Derrick Rose: I’m put in a perfect situation so that when it does happen, the biggest thing is just getting into the city.

christian (New York): hey derrick, who are you looking foward to guard in the NBA.

Derrick Rose: All of them, becuase I’m going to have to guard them.

Derrick Rose: I love all the fans. I hope you keep on supporting me.

by Sports2 on Jun 26, 2008 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Everyone said he was a leader.

He did say he’s worked on being more vocal. I don’t think he’ll be a vocal leader right off the bat. Hopefully, that’s the biggest thing VdN works w/ him.

Yeah and it's not like can be this swashbuckling leader right off the bat

The guy’s a rookie on a team of mostly hardworking guys. It shouldn’t take huge motivational speeches to get them going in the right direction again. As long as Del Negro reminds him that he was the 1st pick and should assert himself as one on the court, he’ll be fine.

We hired a basketball player

not an inspirational speaker. He is 19. He will learn how to be more comfortable with the press and have some things ready to pull out and say. If that is all he ever does in that area I don’t care. IMO, you really can't go with *all* kids

While I may think that Arthur will be as good as Gooden in three years, there’s no way I’d want Arthur as a 3rd or 4th big behind Noah and Thomas. I’d prefer a Joe Smith-type to help develop the team by pushing them towards victories, and someone whose development won’t be stunted by playing limited and inconsistent minutes.

draftexpress

Sonny Weems closed out his college career on the highest note possible, putting together an excellent NCAA tournament leading 9th seeded Arkansas to the second round, where they were blown out by North Carolina. It probably won’t be the 8-20, 22 point game he finished up with against UNC, but rather his game-changing performance in the first round against 8th seeded Indiana (31 points, 12-14 FG) that raised quite a few eyebrows from the many scouts in attendance. In hindsight, this weekend will probably end up looked at as being just what the doctor ordered in terms of kick-starting the pre-draft process into high gear for him.

In terms of physical attributes, Weems grades out very well at the shooting guard position, showing excellent size at 6-6, a solid frame, a good wingspan, and very nice athletic ability. He is very agile, fluid and quick off his feet, and even explosive in some instances, fitting the bill and then some for an NBA wing player.

Most of Weems’ offense comes off his jump-shot, where he is at his best coming off screens and elevating from mid-range distances. He sets his feet quickly, and has a high release point on his jumper, adding in a slight fade-away that makes it pretty difficult to guard. He can put the ball on the floor once or twice and pull-up off the dribble semi-well, creating very nice separation from his defender in the process, a testament to his athletic ability. His shooting mechanics are not consistent and he has a few fundamental flaws that hinder him from being much more effective from long range, but his good touch and solid overall scoring instincts allow him to get by with what he has at the current level of competition he plays at.

Weems’ jumper loses accuracy when he’s unable to fully set his feet before he releases it. He has plenty of wasted motion, starting off with the fact that he brings the ball down before bringing it back up, and then cocks it behind his head for good measure, which doesn’t allow him to get it off as quickly as he should. He seems to kick his feet out unnecessarily after elevating off the ground, fading away for no particular reason, which hurts his percentages as well. In the tape we saw, he looked infinitely better with his jump-shot when he made a conscious effort not to fade away and came down on two feet, something he should certainly work on to maximize his potential as a shooter.

As a slasher, Weems is strong and athletic enough to get to the rim off one or two dribbles and will generally finish well once he gets there, but he’s not crafty enough to consistently create his own shot even at the college level. His ball-handling skills are poor, as he’s unable to change directions in traffic or execute any real advanced moves against opposition. He doesn’t like finishing with his left hand, gets to the free throw line only about twice a game, and also lacks polish on his mid-range jumper.

Defensively, Weems is extremely poor, clearly lacking awareness and fundamentals, not getting in any type of real stance, getting lost within his team’s scheme on a regular basis, and often resorting to just gambling for steals and chasing after the ball instead of rotating and playing sound defense. He has all the tools to be extremely effective in this area, so it’s a bit surprising why he can’t translate them into success on this end of the floor. His junior college roots likely have a lot to do with it.

Weems is a team player, though, not being selfish in the least bit, and looking more than willing to give up the ball within his team’s offense. He executes their sets crisply and seems to have pretty good court vision, particularly in terms of making post-entry passes.

All in all, Weems still seems to have nice upside despite being finished with his college career, and could emerge as a viable NBA player down the road if he’s willing to work on his very obvious, but very correctable flaws. Becoming a consistent shooter and a reliable perimeter defender should be his first priorities, but he’s a guy to keep an eye out for, even if he doesn’t make it in the first go-around. He has a chance to make a strong impression in a few weeks at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, where he should be one of the more interesting player for NBA teams to take a look at. We should keep in mind that he’s still only 21 years old.

Based on Paxson's comment about having to wait a few years, my

guess is that the player is Pekovic, the big center.

From Draft Express:

“Nikola Pekovic has reached an agreement with Panathinaikos for, apparently, the following three seasons. He will only move to the Greek powerhouse after his current season with Partizan is finished.

Pekovic blossomed this season into one of the most productive inside men all over Europe, which combined with his youth, made him one of the most attractive players on the European market. Rumors say he was paid as much as 4.5 million Euros (6.55 million dollars net) for three years, which is similar to the type of money this year’s #1 overall pick will receive in gross terms. This move is a clear statement by the player towards a future in the European scene for the mid-term. He hasn’t even waited for the NBA draft to evaluate his options at the American league. In the end, this is certainly a hit to his draft stock. Since any team drafting him in the end of the first round will likely never see him step foot on an NBA court (because of the extremely limiting rookie scale), it’s much more likely that he goes in the 2nd round now”

By homegrown, I simply meant that Rose was drafted by the Bulls and will (hopefully)

develop into a superstar with the Bulls and (hopefully) spend his best years or his entire career in Chicago.

As a sports fan, I have always preferred players who fit that mold (Jordan, Pippen, Payton, Singletary, etc.) over players acquired through high profile free agency transactions or trades. There is something superficial, mercenary, and unsatisfying about building a champion the way that Boston did this year. Just my opinion.

I agree. While I don’t think it should change the Bulls’ evaluation of Rose that he’s from Chicago and loves the Bulls – it sure does make it more likely that he won’t bolt for the cash in a few years like some others might. And that makes me happy.

It’d be really sweet to have a Hall of Famer Chicago sports personality who was born & raised here, who won state titles and pro titles.

Absolutely.

Absolutely agree. Chicago has always been a city with a unique sense of civic pride.

The Real GM rumor is that

Weems was to get Asik.

formerly sbulls

by Scotter on Jun 26, 2008 11:24 PM CDT reply actions

from ford's

draft analysis.

The Blazers agreed to send Asik to the Bulls for three future second-round picks. I think Asik could be one of the steals of the second round … if he ever comes over. He’s a hyperactive rebounder and shot-blocker with good athleticism. John Hollinger said his numbers suggest he should’ve been a top-10 pick. He’s a talent, but he may be in Turkey for the next few years developing his game.

doesn’t say anything about weems, though.

by Jaina on Jun 26, 2008 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

what the hell

that last part was not supposed to be in the block.

by Jaina on Jun 26, 2008 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Draft Express
With two more years left on his contract, and no NBA out clause, it will be a while before the team that drafts him sees dividend from the pick, which could be viewed as a positive by some. His team is currently playing in the finals of the Turkish league playoffs, and he won’t be able to come over for private workouts until probably the middle of June, which eliminates the possibly of getting a physical at the Orlando pre-draft camp or playing at the Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso.

Emphasis mine, of course. That certainly fits in w/ Paxson saying he’ll be across the pond for a couple of years.

by tyger1147 on Jun 26, 2008 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

From Hollinger
Actually, there are two other foreign players that I think might be better than Gallinari, and both are in this draft. Unfortunately, contracts may get in the way of either ever coming to the NBA.

The first is Omer Asik, a Turkish center who played for Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul this past season. In 279 Euroleague minutes - granted, a smallish sample - his performance projects to 12.2 points and 13.5 boards per 40 minutes, with 52.3 percent shooting and a 15.23 PER. He blocks shots, too, setting a Euroleague Round of 16 record for rejections this year.

He’s 22, 7-feet tall with a decent frame and relatively new to the game and still improving. So what’s the hang-up? Apparently he signed a five-year deal to stay in Turkey with no buyout, meaning he might not play in the NBA for a long time. That would be a shame. I have little doubt that Asik should be a lottery pick, but the contract issue may leave him as a mid-second rounder.

If it’s a two year contract and not five this is a great deal in the 2nd round.

He re-signed in December '07...

...but no details of contract length.

http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=000709

I’d have to think it a screw-up of the Bulls’ front office if he’s on a 5-year contract rather than a 2-year deal.

Biggest Winner of the 2008 NBA Draft:

The Chicago Bulls.

They somehow traded DJ Augustin (#9) for Derrick Rose (#1), straight up. Genius!

How fun is that?

OJ Mayo to the Grizzlies!

For Mike Miller and Kevin love. On ESPN now.

by Big D on Jun 26, 2008 11:43 PM CDT reply actions

8 player deal?

How bad can it get for Mayo. He goes from incompetence (Minnesota) to apathy (Memphis).

by BullsFanInSeattle on Jun 26, 2008 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm

Conley
Mayo
Rudy Gay
Warrick
Darko

They are absolutely dreadful up front, but that’s some nice talent 1-3.

Conley, Crittendon, Lowry, Mayo, Jaric

Memphis must have a trade already in place.

Because, I agree 100 percent that the last thing the Grizz needed (they need to be send to the Developmental league or at least sold to a city/ownership who gives a f*ck) was another point guard.

Not small if your measuring the width of their rear ends.

They’ll score 40 points and give up 50. Talk about lateral quickness.

but I was agreeing with Mariotti in that piece. Of course he had to throw in garbage about Reinsdorf, Krause, etc…

Please don't link to him

I don’t mean to be rude, but we shouldn’t increase traffic to the Sun-Times because they employ someone who routinely writes trash because it makes him more visible.

I hope I’m not overstepping my bounds, but I just hate the “controversy sells” mindset of certain publications.
