Rumor: (Wiz)#18 for (Rockets)Head, #25
Today, on www.hoopsworld.com, a rumor was floated out that the Wizards and Houston Rockets have considered or are considering a deal that would send Washington's 18th pick to Houston for the 25th pick and Luther Head.
Head, who averaged 7.6 points on 43.2 percent shooting but was a total nonfactor in the playoffs, is on the hook for $1.9 million this season.
If the teams were to pull off such a deal, I'd be very curious to see whether J.J. Hickson, the power forward from North Carolina State would still be around for the Wizards at 25. He's the type of wide-bodied PF the Wizards could use.

I want to play this game
“Rumor has it Memphis has decided to give up building a team, and will spend the remaining years of its existence constantly tanking in order to trade their assets to contending teams in exchange for high salaried scrubs.”
And I’d put money my rumor comes true before that one.

Nah, the Pirates are just inept and have actually spent money on players
The Grizz look they’re just getting ready to get sold. I’d compare them more to the MLB owned Expos.

General 2008 draft question.
Maybe this doesn’t belong here, but the main page posts are changing so rapidly it appears that the rules are somewhat fluid today.
Why is it a foregone conclusion that Rose is better than Mayo and Gordon?
It appears that the Heat may be willing to expend the number two pick on Mayo, which indicates that there is some sentiment that he is an elite talent.
If Rose were available, would the Heat definitely select him over Mayo?
I just need some reassurance that Rose is really on a different plane than Mayo and Gordon. Analysts tend to assume this, but no one ever addresses the underlying rationale.

Mayo and Gordon aren't point guards
They’ll have to be converted to the point, and learning the new position takes time. Look at how other converts have fared – Billups, Antonio Daniels, Keyon Dooling, Mo Williams.

All of those guys played more PG in college
than Mayo and Gordon, except for maybe Dooling.

Both guys played the point throughout high school
and each was converted to a 2/combo by their college coaches.
I’ve read interviews where they swear they can play the point…of course, if that were completely true, one would think that’s what their college coaches would have had them playing.

Guys always swear that they can play the point.
And nearly every HS star player plays the point in HS because the coaches just give their best player the ball. They can play the point if you’re looking for a poor man’s Gilbert Arenas.

Eric Gordon?
For starters, his NBA comparison is Ben Gordon, who is a solid pro, but is pretty flawed for a starting 2 guard. He has a sweet offensive game, but I doubt he’s going to be able to explode into the lane when he’s getting punished by bigger NBA defenders. Plus, his size is going to force him to get abused by 2 guards all the time unless he’s paired up with a big enough PG.
OJ Mayo has all-around talent. But, as of now he relies too much on outside jumpers. He’s a combo guard as well, but will most likely play SG. I feel like if you sic a physical defender on him, he’s going to have a lot of trouble getting a shot off. However, I think Mayo can improve his game to be an elite SG in the league, Gordon will follow the same trajectory as BG as a talented scorer who will have some insane games.

Mayo makes sense for Miami as a complimentary player.
He can lock down the opposing team’s best guard. That way Wade gets the easier defensive assignment. He can space the floor with his range and shooting. And he’s can bring the ball up against pressure and at least start the offense. Which is about all Riley’s PGs have been required to do since Riley left LA. He even turned Tim Hardaway into a guy who mostly just stood outside the 3-point line on offense. If Mayo has to be the #1guy, I think he has problems in the NBA because he’s not a naturally efficient player.

It is hard to say how Riley ranks them
as Rose is pretty much taken off the table as a Bull anyway. Riley has to look at what is left and the fact he had Mayo in workouts doesn’t mean Mayo is better than Rose at PG. Mayo is simply available and talented enough to be considered high in the draft. Wouldn’t be a bad pick.

And Beasley
will likely turn out to be a good player that someone might want down the road if Riley really does sour on him along the way. There would have to be yet another red flag that we don’t know about that would send him below the second pick.

I am just wondering why the Bulls didn't work out Mayo/Gordon.
Unless the Bulls are just inept, the fact that they didn’t even appraise Mayo or Gordon indicates that there must be some compelling evidence that Rose is a vastly better player, but I can’t discern what that evidence is. Mayo has great size. Gordon has decent size. Mayo and Gordon posted numbers which were comparable to or better than Rose at the draft workout. All three were celebrated high school players. All three enjoyed varying levels of success in college.
So why is it that Rose is widely considered to indisputably be the best of the three?

I do think you're over-thinking this.
I don’t know if you’ve been lurking or just not “around”, but this has been discussed quite a bit already.

I've seen a lot of analysis here concerning the relative advantages of Beasley and Rose,
but I haven’t read a tremendous amount comparing Rose to the other guards.
Maybe I missed it.
In any case, we’re going to add a good player.

Rose is the only one of those 3 that has a realistic shot of being an
NBA star PG, and not a combo guard or an undersized SG. Rose is also a superior player in terms of getting into the lane and finishing at the basket. Mayo and Gordon don’t play to their combine numbers as well as Rose does. Rose is also a superior rebounder to either of them, but especially Gordon. Which is actually a skill that’s pretty important for an NBA PG, especially on a team that wants to run. Rose’s assist/TO ratio was much better. But, the biggest thing is Rose is a PG in ways that Mayo or Gordon will never be. And at SG they have less value and lack the size and diverse game to be a dominant NBA players from that position. I’d be shocked if Mayo or Gordon is ever the best player on a playoff team.

James Jones is available (free agent)
he turns down guaranteed 3.1 million this year and opts out. He thinks he’ll hit the jackpot like the guy from Seattle. (can’t remember his name? nor his game either for 16 million a year). But I do remember that little pg (boykins) did similiar thing last year and didn’t get a contract?
