Draft Day Eve notes

I can only assume there will be a LOT more to come throughout Thursday. If you see something, create a fanshot or fanpost, and I'll give it front page love.

It's going to be a great day. Remember, the Bulls have the #1 pick!

Kevin Pritchard will get it done

now that the Pacers apparently have their PG in Ford (not to mention it will be hard for them to deal Tinsley so he may be stuck on that roster), I doubt they’d draft Augustin. Here comes Portland, desperate for a young PG and who better than the Nash wanna be in DJ to run with Roy, LMA, and Oden? Pritchard has to get this done, or he’ll have to end up dealing Outlaw and/or Webster to get that PG.

by messwiththebull on Jun 25, 2008 11:15 PM CDT reply actions

I demand we put a hiatus on all Kevin Pritchard love

He’s a whore playing with Paul Allen’s money, stockpiling assets, involving himself in a billion trade scenarios.

They’re going to end up getting Augustin and Rudy Fernandez will be the Spanish Kobe Bryant, and I will pray Kevin Durant drops 60 on them every time they play on ESPN.

I'm not a Blazers fan

but I have to acknowledge a pro-active GM who has made seemingly prescient moves. The point is that I think Augustin lands on Portland when it’s all said and done.

Feeling very good about tomorrow

Pretty likely the pick will be Rose, and if it’s Beasley I’ll be happy regardless.

Well, for the 5th(or more?) time since 1998 the Bulls will be trying to reboot the franchise and create a future championship contender. Normally, I’d bemoan that kind of Clippers-esque futility, but screw it. D. Rose and the trades of Nocioni and Hughes or bust!

Huge day for the franchise and its fans.

The importance of this selection (and the subsequent development and performance of the player selected) cannot be overstated.

I’ve actually cleared tomorrow completely to sit at home and watch the draft news roll in. Kind of pathetic, but it’s not like I was going to get anything else done anyway.

New Orleans traded their #1 pick to Portland too

source

What an odd move for both teams to make. New Orleans has no bench and doesn’t have the money to add a decent free agent. I figured they could use a late first rounder more than any other top team. Portland has talent that runs 12 deep already, I can’t imagine why they think they can add an impact player that late.

by YaoPau on Jun 25, 2008 11:41 PM CDT reply actions

Must have figured there was no one worth their time

I don’t see why they couldn’t have just drafted Bill Walker. But, Portland can’t even draft someone with that pick, they are clearly using the the 13th and 27th picks, and LaFrentz as a way to somehow acquire their starting PG.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 25, 2008 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Blazers collecting picks for someone

They have a full roster as is. Unless they are trying to move existing players then they are piling picks to acquire someone. The last thing the Blazers need is more rookies.

What they need is a vet PG that can enter the roster right away and contribute. His name is Kirk HInrich.

Trade him after July 1st though.

I'm surprised Phoenix hasn't sold their pick yet

They bitch and moan every year about not having enough depth (and they essentially fired their coach because they thought he didn’t play enough people off the bench), yet they never seem to make the connection between having no depth and giving away their draft picks every year. Maybe their “cash considerations” can guard Duncan in the playoffs.

There's still like half a day until the draft.

Maybe if there’s someone we like we can give them Cedric Simmons for it, I mean, he’s pretty awesome. Or like $1 million, though I doubt Reinsdorf would agree to that.

Does anyone here have any idea what Pat Riley might

be up to right now? How is he benefitting from the way Beasley is getting dogged right now? The whole thing seems strange.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jun 25, 2008 11:55 PM CDT reply actions

I'm probably way off, but I'm kind of believing him about not wanting Beasley

Not that I agree with him on that, by any means. But if he’s considering a trade with Seattle, who reportedly would love to get Beasley, there is a pretty good logic to working out Bayless as well as Mayo. If he decides Bayless is good enough for him, there’s no risk in dropping to #4 and watching Minnesota take Mayo.

If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

by wjb1492 on Jun 26, 2008 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

If that's true

why wouldn’t he go for JWill and the 2nd for Kirk—on July 9th?

Unless we wouldn’t. And if we wouldn’t does that mean we take Beasley?

by hlac on Jun 26, 2008 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Yea, I would think he could get a better package.

Plus, I just don’t understand not taking Beasley in that spot, all the other players after 2 look like a real crap shoot.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jun 26, 2008 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

How about this

Pax really hasn’t made up his mind

If it’s Beasely we don’t do anything until after Gordon/Deng get resolved.

If it’s Rose we try and make a deal, some way, to get Beasley also.

by hlac on Jun 26, 2008 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with both of you that it doesn't make sense in general,

it’s just the only way the two secretive workouts fit together in any logical way to me. Bayless isn’t that high on a lot of boards, either, so maybe it’s even to trade down further to 5, or even 7 figuring Bayless will be there. What if he could get Brand and Bayless while dumping a big salary?

Having two players in for late workouts seems a little extreme (not to mention tough on Mayo and Bayless) if all the Beasley stuff is just a smokescreen to keep the Bulls away or drive up interest in other teams to trade up. But if he’s just in love with Mayo and considering taking him straight up at #2, why have Bayless in as well?

If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

by wjb1492 on Jun 26, 2008 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Because apparently Riley is now in love with Bayless

He was amazing in his workout, and they think he could evolve into a Billups kind of player, which is a very good complement for Wade in the backcourt.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 26, 2008 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Sadly Riley couldn't be that crazy

If he doesn’t take Beasley, he trades down and picks at number 5, giving Memphis Beasley and allowing those poor souls to actually win the lottery.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 26, 2008 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions

That's what I was trying to say, although not very succinctly

He works out Mayo and Bayless, because if he really wants Mayo he can probably only drop to #3, but if Bayless is close enough in his opinion (or better for all I know) he suddenly has a lot more flexibility in which teams he can deal with. Which all logically fits with him truly not wanting Beasley, but I still have trouble wrapping my mind around that.

Maybe he just really secretly wants to make sure Spoelstra fails.

If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

by wjb1492 on Jun 26, 2008 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions

That's one of the worst packages I've read on the internet

seriously, Beasley for that garbage, c’mon, man, use logic. To even have a July chance at B-Easy, realistically you’d have to give up Deng (via S&T), Hinrich, and take on Blount’s contract in return.

by messwiththebull on Jun 26, 2008 7:06 AM CDT up reply actions

All I can say is that I'll be happy when it's over with

by Option27 on Jun 26, 2008 12:16 AM CDT reply actions

Yea, the next big day will be July 6 I believe.

Because the Bulls and Heat have a summer league game and I would think that Rose v Beasley, even in the summer league will be pretty fun to see. Especially if Rose is gonna play with Noah and Thomas like i’ve heard.

I feel really confident about Gooden and Thomas at the 4.

Unless Nocioni or Deng get significant playing time at PF (which is possible if the team runs and VdN is weird), I think they’ll be Top-3 in some metric of production (WoW?) out of all 30 NBA teams.

It's a nice yin and yang

Thomas with his crazy athleticism and defense, Gooden with his available low post skills. I just don’t think we should expect too much out of Drew, he’s pissed off tons of people waiting for him to be that kind aggressive low post player he portrays once a week.

I'm not expecting much. Maybe just what he did last year.

It’s not great by any means. Thomas is the bigger contributor of the two, of course. I just think Drew Gooden is “starting caliber” (sometimes) and maybe it will work out well. Maybe.

Rose (if the Bulls pick him) at the Cell this weekend?

Probably… Imagine the ovation he’d get. I remember Gordon, Deng, and Duhon throwing out the first pitch for the Sox soon after they were drafted, but it might have been after their press conference. I’m not sure how strict the Bulls will be about showing off Rose until after his press conference, but I have a feeling he’ll make an appearance. If they draft Beasley, then…... maybe not.

About other trades

Good job Indy. They got their point guard and another pick for a player that they wanted to rid themselves of anyway. Now they can use one pick on potential & still get a solid role player.

Good job Denver. MJ got screwed by Kiki if that protected lottery pick isn’t top 19 protected. Denver wins twice. They don’t have to spend $ on a draft pick this year, and I guarentee the pick coming back is going to be better than 20.

by Jesse07 on Jun 26, 2008 7:57 AM CDT reply actions

Hollinger on the JO - TJ swap

Story

The part that I liked was this:

The trade can’t be completed until July 9, however, because Ford is a base-year compensation player until the first day that next season’s cap rules kick in (July 1), and so the trade won’t work under the cap until then. From then until July 9, the league has a moratorium on trades and signings. Given all that, the trade won’t be official for a fortnight.

Instead, this will be the trade that everybody knows about but nobody acknowledges publicly. There will be no announcements or news conferences and it might mess with some summer-league plans. But the teams are exchanging medical information, and right now everything appears to be a go.

By the way, this delay also means there are still two weeks for other teams to get in on this trade and make it more than a two-way deal.

So worrying about Kirk’s(now the most coveted PG on the market?) BYC in a potential trade is apparently a mute point. And it also means Toronto will be drafting under Indiana’s orders. I think it was discussed in a previous fanpost that I couldn’t find about if this was possible.

My Own CRAZY TALK

as the draft approaches, i can’t help but to wonder how a team can pass on a player that has unanimously been labeled a future superstar in beasley. the trend right now in the nba has moved away from big men in the last few years and shifted towards the importance of uptempo shifty point guards to ignite offenses. the bulls have hinrich, who, although is an above average floor leader, seems to lack the ability to… well… create.

in my own (perhaps not so) crazy scenario, the bulls swap #1 and #2 draft picks this year with miami, and in the process also receive miami’s 2010 #1 draft pick in return. with the #2 pick, the bulls draft michael beasley. the bulls then use a newly redundant big, such as a thomas, noc or a gooden in a package deal to memphis to pick up one of their talented point guards and take some of their poor contracts, such as a cardinal. it doesn’t resolve the glut of guards, but it does resolve the perceived lack of pg ability, and we pick up arguably the best player to come out of college in a long time. the existing frontcourt of thomas/ gooden/ noah, although adequate, will not amount to much if thomas and noah don’t pick up the somewhat important ability to create their own shots.

ok, now i’m just doing some 11th hour rambling.

the pick remains rose.

by leeac on Jun 26, 2008 10:56 AM CDT reply actions

cold feet

assuming rose is all that he is touted to be, do the bulls have the right pieces to allow him to excel? he will (presumably) have a great shooting guard to drive and dump to, but his 3 is a pull up jump shooter, and his 4 & 5 are still trying to figure out the game offensively. there is something to be said about a unit (or core) growing and learning together, but if we pick up rose, how many years away are we from competing for a conference title?

is the path shorter if we pick up a beasley, and then a comparable pg via trade?...

by leeac on Jun 26, 2008 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions

There are no comparable point guards

that we could get. That’s what makes Paul, Williams – and potentially Rose – so valuable.

If Beasley becomes the 2nd coming of Larry Johnson

He’ll be a great player, but that’s not the kind of guy you can build a team around. His talents are unique, but not something that can be used as a cornerstone of a franchise, especially one that is desperate for leadership and on-court accountability.

I've never liked the DC comparison.

Coleman was always one of the bigger guys on the floor…I mean you could pick him out just by his size.

I think the Mark Aguirre comparison is a lot closer—in size and also in their games.

And remember, eventually, Aguirre found his way onto Isiah’s team and was a big part of their winning both championships.

Because LJ's athletic dominance only lasted for like 2 years

On another note, for all the conspiracy talk, I can’t be swayed from thinking that Stern rigged the draft lotteries from 91-93 in order for the Hornets and Magic to become viable franchises. In that 3 season span the Hornets acquired LJ and Mourning, and Orlando got Shaq and Penny Hardaway.

how about

a marcus fizer comparison?... just saw an article on espn on how he was selected as one of the worst lottery picks. they make reference to how this power forward measured much shorter in the predraft workouts than advertised, and the bulls selected him anyway… even though they didn’t need a pf… and fizer winds up starting 35 games in his nba career…

by leeac on Jun 26, 2008 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Fizer wasn't this dominant in college at Iowa State

He was good, but Beasley has been far better. I think the Johnson comparison works so much better. People forget how good he was at the PF spot despite being 6’7. He could score in the paint, and after a few years started hitting the 3 pretty accurately. We could be all sour on Beasley because Paxson probably won’t pick him, but I think he’s going to be an All-Star for years.

Sloan doesn’t like to throw rookies right into the system unless he is left with no other choice. Factor in the PG handles the both most of the time and the reservations in terms of rushing the development grow larger.

There’s articles out there about Deron trying to push Sloan to trust him sooner with play calling and getting a bucket without a drawn up play.

Shocking how well a player can develop when the coaching staff is behind him 100%.

Looking at Williams minutes

He was handcuffed in the 1st half of the season, but after the All Star break, he was routinely playing over 30 minutes a game, and started the last 26 games of the season. Obviously he had to prove to Sloan he could run his offense effectively over the course of the season, because he was starting early on, then was put back on the bench. Since the Bulls have no set offensive gameplan like Sloan had, I doubt Rose will be handcuffed like that unless he really struggles.

Yi for Jefferson

I like that for the Bucks. I’ve thought that CharlieV is a better option at the 4, and now the Bucks have their pick plus Jefferson.
