I can't believe I'm so disappointed to see O'Neal taken off the market
BTW, correction for your post, it’s the 17th pick, not the 27th

Not in any of the ESPN headlines yet
Does this mean Indiana doesn’t take Augustin, which means Portland gets him at 13?
That’s a nice trade for Toronto. Ford was being annoying for them anyways, might as well bring in someone who actually knows how to play D. Hell, couldn’t they play Bargagni at SF now?

maybe
but we all need to put maximum effort into making them believe Nocioni has to man that spot

I actually thought it was a much better trade for the Pacers
TJ Ford is a very good PG (even if he does have that breaky-neck thingy) and he frees them up to be able to draft best player available with their now two first round picks. Rasho is a big body to occupy the JO vacuum and expires soon, on top of all that they got another pick in the draft which had been a goal of theirs. Not to mention, they got out from JO’s terrible contract and won’t be handcuffed by him missing half the season again this year. Great deal for the Pacers. Not sure how it really helps Toronto, other than that for the 40-50 games JO actually plays he’ll be a nice defensive presence next to Bosh to make up for Bosh’s thin frame and perimeter-orientated game.

Not that LeBron or Wade would want to go to Canada.
They already have Bosh.
Plus, Rasho was coming off the books this year, so they’ll be paying about $3 mil more this year and $14 mil more next year to get out from under Ford’s contract (saving a total of about a million).
Although, I guess it does give them a huge trading chip over the next year and a half. It’s a weird trade. Oh well.

Nah, not really
Ford’s nerve problems are never going away.
Plus, he ends up being a big pain to the team he’s on. Great the first year, then a locker room issue. At least that was the word in Milwaukee (which keeps having locker room issues), and in Toronto last season.

Yep
I must have wrote it on one of the threads on this trade that got hidden, but I don’t get this at all for the Pacers.
They get some salary cap relief, but honestly, not very much. O’Neal has had his issues, but a talented big man with knee issues can lose a lot off his game and still be a very effective player (Camby, McDyess, Patrick Ewing, Amare, etc). Most of those guys tend to get over it.
Even at less than what he was he’s a scoring, shot-blocking big man on a team that really needs someone who can defend the basket (because their perimeter defenders are crummy).
Ford, on the other hand, is a hit away from never playing again, and he was hardly a top flight PG before that. So I think Larry Bird got rooked. The salary cap savings they’re getting aren’t that good.

I think both teams did ok, but I like it especially for the Pacers
They need younger players. With Ford and 2 draft picks, they can at least start to get some assets on the roster. Plus, if you read Indy Cornrows (and you should!), it’s almost the sense that just getting O’Neal out of town signifies a new direction for the franchise. I think everyone was pretty sick of the constant drama (injury related and otherwise).

worst-case scenario, at least Ford’s contract is insured. Not like he’s Eddy Curry or anything :)

also...I'm not sure O'Neal's not a huge health risk...

Yeah I think Jermaine was the last brawl-related player on the team
Aside from David Harrison and TJ Ford being a pain in the ass for them in no less than 2 seasons, their roster would make Paxson envious with their squeaky cleanliness.

how about a starting five of
Rasho, Dunleavy, Murphy, Diener, and Foster for the Pacers?

But I didn’t really the Klan was still so active down I-65 — well, at least not until you hit Louisville.

I made a FanShot of this before I realized this one was posted...
...but this is a good example of how to trade Hinrich for a draft pick. Um… I think.
Sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that the Pacers and the Raptors have agreed to a deal that, pending physicals, would send Jermaine O’Neal to Toronto in exchange for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic and the No. 17 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.Ford’s contract makes him a “base-year compensation” player, meaning the trade cannot be completed until July 9.
Although I believe Paxson when he says that he won’t “worry” about trades too much until he knows who, and for how long, Gordon and Deng will be in Chicago.
by tyger1147 on Jun 25, 2008 8:12 PM CDT 0 recs
Yeah Indiana can actually add some good players now
By all accounts Augustin will be there at 11, and they can take a project like Anthony Randolph at 17 if he’s available, or Kosta Koufus and get a solid big man.
The road to mediocrity starts!

wow, pretty strange
this isn’t as crazy as the idea of working in RFAs with draft picks, It’s encouraging that there is some precedent for holding off trades ‘officially’ until BYC expires.

It's definitely the solid precedent a few of us were curious about.
As you said, still different than the RFA’s, but it’s something. I s’pose it also shows that unofficial trades can at least happen.

I think that happened with Steve Francis too
He refused to play in Vancouver when they drafted him in 1999, but they didn’t trade him until a month or two after the draft (before he signed his rookie contract, I’m pretty sure). So it’s definitely possible, if pretty rare (since teams rarely want to trade guys they just drafted).

Is PAXSON DRunk
\Isnt kirk hinrich resume more impressive then tj ford and im sure drew goodens offensive rebounding is underrated not trying to give gooden more probs thens neccesary but what im saying is kirk hinrich and gooden sounds better then tj ford and nesterovich for jermain oneal, funny how chicago lets kg, kobe, paul gasol and oneal all slip away and funny how all of them are all-stars something we havnt had since 1998, so what im sayin is if pax new he would take rose y not trade kirk and gooden for joneal
