Richard Hendrix in the Second Round
In Chad Ford's latest Mock Draft (version 6.1), he has the Bulls selecting a guy I've had my eye on for a while, Alabama big man, Richard Hendrix. Here's what Ford says about the pick:
39. Chicago Bulls
[Updated 6/25] Hendrix isn't flashy, but he is tough in the paint, can rebound and has the potential to be a solid player off the bench for the Bulls.Richard Hendrix | PF | Alabama

Now, I would absolutely love the Bulls to get Hendrix here. He's been a very productive player throughout his college career. He has an NBA body and he scored with an eFG of right around 60% every year he was in college. The ESPN Insider Scouting Report on him lists his positives and negatives:
Positives:
A man child. NBA body and huge catcher's mitts for hands. Physical
player who works hard on the boards. Long arms allow him to play taller than he is. Good athlete. Developing a nice midrange game.
Negatives: Lacks great foot speed. Undersized for his college position for center.
Summary: Hendrix had an excellent junior season at Alabama, but NBA scouts have been skeptical in the past. They think Hendrix succeeds because of his strength. Once he gets to the NBA, he'll look much more average. Still, given the numbers he's put up at Alabama, you have to give him a look.
He looks like a bruiser down low in the Paul Millsap mold, and indeed, Draft Express has written the following about him with regard to his workout for Golden State:
Hendrix did everything he possibly could to help himself reportedly, blocking shots, rebounding well, scoring points both inside and outside, running the floor and playing strong defense. This is not the first strong report we’ve received from a workout he’s been in-- others have mentioned how much better he’s shooting free throws and mid-range jumpers, as well as the confidence he exudes and how impressive he is off the court as well. As we’ve discussed before, Hendrix’s numbers and overall profile compares favorably with Carlos Boozer’s at the same age, and even though we might not ever become an all-star like Boozer, he could develop into a Paul Millsap type steal if he falls into the second round.
And during the Orlando Pre-Draft camp the DX guys had this to say:
Richard Hendrix again did his best Paul Millsap impression, doing yeomen’s work on the offensive glass, picking up 6 rebounds on that end in just 22 minutes. He struggled to finish most of his shots inside, though, being unable to elevate quite high enough in traffic. He did have a nice move on the block in which he finished with a pretty jump-hook, and also did his typical work in transition and with simple finishes around the rim. Again he impressed with his passing ability and overall unselfishness, something that you rarely see out of any of the big men here.
I think that anytime you can get a guy with an NBA-body, with back to the bucket moves that rebounds the ball very well, and has consistently scored over 20 pts. per pace adjusted 40 mins at a very efficient clip (eFG% of 60%) in the second round, that you do it. I really love this guy and I haven't really understood why he's a second rounder when JJ Hickson from NC State is projected about 15 spots ahead of him and does most of the same things. Anyway, let me know what you guys think of Hendrix, I've admittedly never seen him play more than a few minutes of ball, but from what I read and the numbers he's put up in his sophomore and junior season, I'm intrigued and would love to see the Bulls nab a Millsap clone (or best case scenario the next Boozer-like steal).

I like it...
the few bright spots of the Utah playoff run was watching Millsap come off the bench.
Having said that, the comparison isn’t that close.
Hendrix may be an above-average rebounder…but Millsap was the best rebounder in the NCAA his senior year.
Hendrix has thick shoulders like Millsap, but he needs to shed some weight like Millsap did if he really wants to be dangerous.

yeah the comparison isn't perfect
but even if he isn’t quite at Millsap’s level, I still think he’d be a productive bench player and another banger to add to our thin front court (it’d be nice if he was taller, so he could play C).

I love the optimism of pre-draft descriptions
It’s clear the Bulls need some bruisers up front, and he definitely fits the bill. If he turns out to be below average, it’s not like the expectations were that high for a 2nd round pick.

exactly.
well worth the risk, and we need more bodies up front.

i think we need a real backup center(6'10 to 7+) who can ran the court
by FUTURE12 on Jun 25, 2008 12:10 PM CDT 0 recs
that would be nice, but will one be available is the more important consideration

Since the 7 footers who can run are considered to be long term projects
There’s no point in doing that, the 2nd round pick should be used on someone who can contribute nicely in his 1st year, there’s enough raw talent up front. The ideal choice would be Roy Hibbert, but I doubt he gets passed up by Utah, SA, or LA.

no way Hibbert slips that far into the second round, too big and too skilled
and in terms of contributing right away, that was part of the reason I like Hendrix so much. He’s got skills and a body that translate right away. Sure, he has room for improvement, but he does things now that make him a potentially valuable bench player.

at his best is ben with the pistons and were not going to get an all star. we just need someone to come in off the bench who can rebound, run the court and play defense.

he has motor and work ethic problems,
Ben had to work very hard just to be a productive player in the league. Guys that can’t play offense and that have shaky motivation generally don’t pan out. Dorsey won’t do anything in the league.

I think Simmons put it best
If you can’t get motivated to play in college when you’re working to get a high draft choice and more money, what is going to motivate you once you get that guaranteed money?

Pre-Draft Measurements....
All fair better than Milsap except vertical. Wingspan, reach, agility, speed… all better except jumping.

Well, the vert was 3-4" less.
Which goes along w/ the “not able to finish because he lacked hops” thing above.

I have trouble differentiating
D.J. White and he. Similar size, production, styles…I’d take either.

yeah I used to mix them up too
I prefer Hendrix to White, but see no reason why they both won’t be productive bench players.

I still think
Josh Duncan from Xavier is a better player and he absolutely ruled the court in camp.

Duncan is a beast
I would love to have him on the Bulls. I just graduated from X in May and watching him play every game was a gift. Tremendous work ethic and can play all over the court.

Update - HoopsAnalyst's Ed Weiland Loves Hendrix as well:
In his analysis of this draft’s power-forward crop he ranks Hendrix 5th behind Beasley, Love, Speights, and Hickson. Thought this was an interesting bit:
I like Richard Hendrix and I feel he’s a legit first round draft pick. If he lasts into round 2, he’ll become a pleasant surprise in the way Carlos Boozer or Paul Millsap have. He’s in a very strong PF field and is mainly being measured against freshmen, who are generally preferred to juniors because of their upside. That hurts his stock some, as does the fact that Alabama didn’t make the tournament. But players with numbers this good who have the size to play in the league usually make it and do well. At the very least Hendrix should become a valuable reserve on the inside. But he’s probably better than that and will be a starter somewhere.

really hope he's right that he's a starting quality PF
to be able to bring a starting quality big off the bench for Tyrus when he needs a breather would be awesome. Also, it would make Gooden even more expendable, which frees us up to wheel and deal, which is also awesome.

Hendrix seems a good fit
Specially if we draft Rose, as I think we will. KC Johnson said yesterday that he believes Hendrix could be one of the guys that Pax may select on the second round, because he may try to add some big guy… Despite sometimes I don’t agree and believe KC – who can forget: "Thomas, who will be shopped" – , I think he is right on this one… And selecting Hendrix would allow us to use Gooden on a trade with Hinrich our other – not TT and NOAH, please – to get another good player…
Please Pax!!! Can you trade Hughes???

I like either Hendrix or Malik Hairston
for the second round pick. If Bill Walker is there you pretty much have to take a flier on him though. Hairston is a 4 year senior starter who had comparable athletic numbers to OJ Mayo at the combine, and he’s bigger. I try not to get too excited about second round picks though.
