Pax speaks on pick
[From the FanShots. There's accompanying video here. -ed.]
No reveal (obviously), but seems to be leaning towards Rose.
From the quotes, it's apparent that Pax is extremely high on both guys. This is certainly in line with Sam Smith's rumor that they are trying to acquire the #2 pick as well. Sounds to me, though, like he's thinking Rose. See for yourself...

Trade for the Second Pick, Too!
That’ll stop the Beasley OR Rose arguments. Beasley AND Rose is pure win.
They will make each other better.
If not for the second pick, get like the fifth.
Draft Rose at 1 and Kevin Love at 5. Rose needs a big to be great. Kevin Love is my boy.
I might faint if we somehow get both Rose and Beasley.
I know one thing, I’ll most likely never bitch about Paxson ever again. It would be unreal to see these two guys growing together. Can you imagine how devastating the pick and roll/pick and pop with Beasley would be?
Excuse me for a minute, I need to go pick up my jaw…it just hit the floor.

Me too
I’d offer up quite a bit for Beasley
Would Hinrich, Thomas, Gooden and next year’s pick get it done? Thabo? I’d throw him in too.
The only guy I’d have pause about sending out is Noah. It seems to me that you really need Noah lining up with Beasley and Deng in your frontcourt.
We'd be giving away all our defense
and the basketball championships still aren’t won without it.
I think Beasley’s defense is part of the problem Riley has with him. But I think Beasley’s post game can be significantly attacked by an average NBA defense.
It is surprising to hear the Heat are leaning towards taking OJ Mayo at #2 outright. The offers to the Heat must not be very good or there are even more teams with concerns about Beasley at the NBA level.

Or perhaps Riley just rightly judges Beasley to be overrated
I mean, I like the idea of getting him, but the fact Riley is going to pass him up (it appears) does give me some pause.
In general, I find Mayo and Beasley to be very unusual. Beasley seems like a can’t miss guy that people are strangely scared of, while, when I look at Mayo I see just the opposite. There are lots of reasons to think he won’t live up to his hype, but NBA GMs see him workout and get all moist. I don’t get it.
ESPN should rebroadcast this or put it online
but they showed an NBA Draft special last night on ESPN2 that was really good information. Or maybe it was mostly lies.
Seriously though, it was an hour of following around various draft picks in four groups. They were following Rose, his brothers, and his agency clique in Cali and in Chicago. They were following the Lopez twins, their older brothers, and their agency clique also in Cali. Then they were following the array of prospects working out at ATTACK Athletics here in Chicago working with Tim Grover. This group was OJ Mayo, Bill Walker, Shaun Pruitt, Jeremy Pargo, and a few other players I didn’t recognize. Finally they tracked Jason Thompson from Rider.
The Rose and Lopez parts were more about stories and dreams. The ATTACK portion was dynamite. They showed Bill Walker on camera discussing the training Grover is putting him through to prepare him for the next level. Walker said they have him lifting more which he said he hasn’t done a lot of in High School and College. Really? I don’t know if that is believable, but he is just 20 years old so it might be true.
ESPN also showed NBA players like Wade and Quentin Richardson discussing what Grover does for them in the offseason.
What ESPN was doing was giving you four unique perspectives on getting into the NBA. There’s the 1 and done phenom in Rose with his family supporting him. The 2 years and done Lopez twins trying to challenge themselves early. The one and done Mayo/Walker group that played together in high school, had all sorts of hype around them, but turned out good college seasons, but nothing great. Then Jason Thompson as the 4 year product that stayed at Rider despite offers to transfer to an elite college.
Check the ESPN schedule. They might show this again early morning at 2AM so if you have DVR you can record it. I hope they put it online on ESPN360.

Draft Rose from MEMPHIS....Trade away both KANSAS players???
It could very well happen since Kirk is a PG other teams might covet, and Gooden’s contract only has one more year on it.

I really liked this Pax quote.
“The reason I’m talking about the future is this is another 19-year-old we’re going to be adding,” Paxson said. “We have to create an environment for these guys to grow. It may not be tomorrow. But over time, for the good of the organization, it has to happen.”
Link Paxson might actually be serious about player development this time.

If Miami takes Mayo as the #2 pick, would the Bulls trade for Beasley from Minnesota?
Would Hinrich + Noah for #3 and cap filler be enough?

I can't see it.
Not after The Mayor’s near-drop of the Teddy when he found out he was 3rd overall. I mean, maybe, but I just can’t see it.
Trading for Second Pick
Is this even possible? I haven’t seen the Sam Smith rumor. Not that I trust him on much of anything, of course.
It is a Rosy future.
I cannot wait for the next 1 day 7 1/2 hours to be here. I will be glued to ESPN. Miami’s decision is fascinating. It seems they really want Rose, not Beasley. Riley usually gets the draft right. He took Wade when he desperately needed a Center. Riley wanting Rose makes me more sure Rose is very special. I believe Riley was ready to trade Wade to get the first pick from us. It certainly seems like a Rosy future.
About trading Hinrich on draft day
Chad Ford mentioned this on the Monday show of Waddle and Silvy. Hinrich is still a base year contract until July 1. This means trading him on draft day will only yield one half of his base year salary.
I thought we’d be trading Hinrich at his ~9 million dollar salary. Phooey.
I'm hoping TT, Gooden and Noah have a huge benefit from Rose
Noc and Deng may also be able to benefit from the attention Rose will demand. I would love to have Rose and Beasley but I thank our 1.7% we will get Rose.
Chad Ford also told Waddle and Silvy
that he’s hearing the Bulls are shopping Gordon in a sign and trade package.
This doesn’t sound right. If you sign and trade players they are base year contracts and they cannot be traded until December 15th. Chad knows the CBA better than I do, so I may be wrong on the rules.

More on the sign and trade deals
Last year Rashard Lewis was signed and traded to the Orlando Magic for a “future conditional second round pick”. That seems rather odd because Lewis was signed to nearly 16 mil per, was not playing under a rookie contract, and the Magic did have SOME cap space. The trade was also conducted during the Summer and avoided the December 15th rule.
I suppose the Sonics only received a value of 8 mil per due to the BYC, and the future conditional second round pick cannot have value more than a 1 million, so the Magic would have required about 7 million in cap space to make this deal.
The CBA is a labyrinth.
by NBA Observer on Jun 25, 2008 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions
Wasn't that deal how the Sonics got the trade exception they used to acquire Kurt Thomas and 2 first rounders?

I don't believe Lewis was a base-year player
because he opted out of an already-large contract, and didn’t get the raise necessary to invoke base-year status on the new contract.
Though, the rules don’t matter as much (or nearly at all) since the Magic were so far under the cap.

Does that mean
If we package Kirk with Larry Hughes we can make a deal with Portland for, say, they’re #13, Lafrentz and Steve Blake?
Kirk ($5mil) + Hughes ($12mil)
for
Blake ($4mil) + LaFrentz ($12mil) + the 13.
That would be sweet. Portland would get a point guard that would match perfectly with Roy, we would get a decent back up to Rose (presumably), an expiring deal in LaFrentz, Hughes off our hands, and chance at #13 to pick a solid future starting 2 guard like Rush. Portland has money to burn on Hughes, and I think they’d do it to get Kirk, assuming they really want him.
come on
who is there at the 13 that is better than Hinrich?
that's not the point
Rose is better than Hinrich, and you don’t pay a backup pg $10m a year. I think you can find someone like Rush at #13 that is better than and cheaper than Hughes – that’s the point.
Thanks
I can never keep the three Rush brothers straight.
Jaron is the oldest. Kareem is second(signed with Pacers). And Brandon is the youngest.

Who backs up Derrick Rose?
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 25, 2008 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions
what is the point then?
first of all I’d hold off on saying Rose is better than Hinrich. Second of all we’re not going to be under the cap anytime soon so whats the point of having LaFrentz’s expiring contract instead of Hughes’. And of those three guys, I only really like CDR and I hope we’ve all learned from Memphis that having two guys who can’t shoot free throws as the starting backcourt is not exactly genius, and neither of them would really be 3 point shooters either, I don’t think that would work in the NBA.
and yes
I realize that if we draft Rose first then we have to assume he’s better than Hinrich but I thought I’d get that in there.
damn

CDR isn't an NBA starter
He’s a backup. So’s Rush. Ditto Courtney Lee. They may eventually become starters, but they wouldn’t be starting for the Bulls anytime soon.
Presume we acquire the 13th pick and take Rush, CDR, or Lee. The Roster would like this.
PG: Rose, Blake
SG: Gordon, Thabo, Rush/CDR/LEE
SF: Deng, Noc
PF: Thomas, Gooden
C: Noah, Gray, Lafraentz
I’d still look to move Noc to get a taller forward with better ball handling skills, but whatever we do have they’d they have to be willing to work through a season of growth to bring players like Rose, Thabo, Thomas, Noah, and the #13 into the system.

um, Kirk makes more than 5 mil.
for next year he’s on the books for 10.25 million according to ShamSports.
by fundamentallysound on Jun 25, 2008 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions
I'm referring
to the BYC clause. If we trade him before July 1 he only counts as half his salary (or something like that)
Also, Portland could just draft a player we want at 13
And we could complete the trade on July 1st.
I’m leaning towards Pax holding his pieces until after the negotiations with Gordon and Deng.
What if we’re in a position where we cannot come to an agreement with Gordon and we have already traded Hinrich? That would leave us with Rose, Hughes, Thabo as our only guards under contract.

from RealGM:
This is just the first one that popped up…it might be the only one, but at least it indicates it’s possible.
“Trade: The raptors traded the rights to unsigned 2nd round pick Zeljko Rebraca to the Detroit Pistions for a future 2nd round pick.”
http://www.realgm.com/src_recent_transactions/2002/07/
Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky
This is different
RealGM reports that trade occurred on July 13th. That’s well after the draft and it is only trading the rights to the player.
The type of trade to which I refer is one where say the Bulls tell the Blazers to draft John Doe at #13 on June 26th. Then on July 1st the teams agree to their trade proposal exchanging players and the Bulls end up with the Blazers’ 13th pick for which they drafted for Chicago.
by NBA Observer on Jun 25, 2008 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Drafting a player, not signing him, waiting for post july1st, trading him.
I thought this is what you were talking about.
Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky
I see the confusion
The reason for waiting for July 1 to come would be so Hinrich’s BYC goes away and is worth the full 9.5 million instead of the half that due to the BYC. To make the deal work for Portland we need the full 9.5 mil of Kirk’s contract.
Matt explains the nuts and bolts here.
by NBA Observer on Jun 25, 2008 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Doesn’t it still work out to be the same thing?
The only part of the equation that matters is the first team drafting a player and not signing him.
In the hypothetical case of the Bulls this year, July 1 rolls around, Hinrich’s contract becomes worth its full dollar amount, and we make the trade.
Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky
I wonder if the trade is worth it
Rose is obviously going to have some problems defensively in his first year while he “learns the ropes”. Steve Blake is a great outside shooter and solid backup PG, but wouldn’t Hinrich’s defense be particularly useful next year? I don’t know, maybe I’m being optimistic but I think a Rose/Hinrich backcourt can actually work out pretty well. I’m not sold on Thabo getting a ton of minutes unless he shows marked improvement early on, so Kirk is a fine backup PG/SG at this point. Hell, they could even start him over Gordon.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 25, 2008 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions
I think you'd have to use the '07-'08 salary
so Kirk’s contract going out is $5.625m, going in for the Blazers is $11.25m
I’ll try and mash this out:
Bulls:
In: LaFrentz ($12.4m), Blake ($4.2m) = $16.6m
Out: Hughes ($12.8m), Hinrich($5.6m) = $18.4m
(that’s within the 125%)
Blazers:
In: Hinrich($11.2m), Hughes ($12.8m) = $23m
Out: LaFrentz ($12.4m), Blake ($4.2m) = $16.6m
That’s not within the 125%. The Blazers would have to send out more salary. Luckily they can do so with the Bulls using their trade exception. James Jones would be the best candidate but he has a player option. Channing Frye or Jarrett Jack would likely work.

Here is the thing though.. i would not mind having Raef for a year at all… he can be our last big man with Aaron. He is actually a compliment to our bigs since he can shoot and none of them can. I am not sold on the Blake idea and I am not sold on keeping BG. I tend to think though that if a team is full of good, yet unspectacular players (as the Bulls were in 2006), you pick someone who has a chance to become something special. That's an awkward quote
There needs to be more context with that.
Does he mean “I got nailed” in that the club didn’t take the proper measures to develop Tyrus? Did the previous staff fail to take the proper measures? Does he mean I should have selected Aldridge?
In the end, that quote sounds like Paxson wants to keep Tyrus.

If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.
What is a reasonable expectation for Rose's rookie
performance?
Should we expect him to start? How many points/assists should we expect?
Personally, I do think Rose should start immediately. You don’t put the number one overall draft pick on the bench. He should have sufficient talent to start as a rookie. Otherwise, he probably wasn’t worth the number one pick. Moreover, starting Rose and maximizing his minutes will accelerate his development.
LSU 38 OHIO STATE 24 - LSU IS THE NATIONAL CHAMPION AND I AM THE KING OF BOURBON STREET!!
He will start, but don't expect a CP3 rookie season
I think he will struggle initially, but consistent minutes will allow him to get used to NBA defenses and will be able to figure out how to break them down and get into the lane. I think he will do fine because Gordon and Deng are good offensive options for him to pass to, what remains to be seen is if he can involve Joakim and Tyrus in the offense the point where they aren’t just setting screens and shooting contested 15 foot jumpers. Of course, this also depends on how well the coaching staff is going to utilize Rose, and what kind of offensive strategy is going to be implemented. Deron Williams is so successful because he has a rigid gameplan that Sloan devises, but is then allowed that freedom to take over the game or push the pace when needed.

Since that discussion
Paxson has come out with a three – four year time frame.
I don’t know if this changes whether Rose should or shouldn’t start right away, but I see it as slightly shifting the debate towards Rose starting right away and letting him grow into the position, without the pressure of saying the team has to be great right away.
Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky
Reagrdless of whether he starts or not
I think it’s important to remember that Rose is very young. He’s not just going to tear up the league in year 1 and I can see Beasley right away getting 20 and 10 for some crappy team.
The “Beasley showing people he should have been #1” and “How good would the Bulls look with Beasley” articles/post will start showing up and some people will initially think he’s the better player and skewer Paxson for making the wrong pick.
However, Rose will be better in year 2 and clearly be the better player in year 3. Take that one to the bank.
"Imagine how good we would be if we had a Beasley, Aldridge, Noah frontcourt."

Aldrige wouldn’t be the same player he is in Portland if we drafted him…Skiles would somehow find a way to screw him over ..Play the vets over the young guys crap
I'd like to see at least Jay Williams numbers to start
Williams averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 26 minutes per game. He played in 75 games and started 54. But he only averaged 40% from the floor, 32% beyond the arc, and 64% from the line.
Rose’s numbers on Memphis were 48% FG, 34% 3pt, and 71% FT. If Rose can make 44-45% FG, not shoot too many 3s, and stay over 70% from the line, he should be able to average 10-15 points per game. He’ll also rebound better than Williams. I don’t think 15-5-5 is out of the question, and 15-8-5 would be gravy.

no 'I miss the Duke family' Williams whining though.

If he starts and gets 30 min a game,
I could definitely see that.

Is it possible to project +/- numbers?
Essentially, that’s what I think most of the pro-Rose group is expecting to be the difference. I still think Beasley would outperform Rose in this aspect next year.
I don't know if many will disagree with you here
Beasley will put up the better numbers. It will just be mostly a moot point in terms of getting us to where we want to be.
I know I have shifted with the off season winds from “get D’Antoni and let’s run this roster like were we’re in Pamplona every night” over to “holy shitballs, 17 ping pong balls, Del Negrowhat, Rose, AAHHHHH”.
The easy analogy is I went from wanting to play like the Suns to wanting to play like the Hornets, but with either direction we have most of the necessary pieces to get there.

I asked KC today on his live chat he says...
10 pts 5 assists…i say 12 pts 6-7 assists a game
CHICAGO MANE!!!!
Was he
responding as if Rose would be a starter or coming off the bench with those numbers?
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
all i asked was...
If and when the Bulls draft Rose what do u realisticly think he will average pts and assists wise….then he kinda poked around the question a lil which i expected talkin bout what to expect from rookies and he finally said 10 and 5 a game…i think Rose will start so me personally i think he will do a lil better than that
CHICAGO MANE!!!!
KC is a dope about rookies and young players in general.

I expect better numbers than what KC gave you, yeah.

I think the ESPN 1000 podcast are one day delay to publishing
This is a link to the Mac, Jurko, and Harry podcasts. To the right are is a column with links to Waddle and Silvy and JHood and DeFalco.

Go to ESPN Podcenter
They put podcasts up on the same day.

Does this include the ESPN "Local" podcasts?
I found day of broadcast podcasts for the ESPN national radio programming, but under “most recent” it doesn’t list anything from the local broadcasts.

Yeah there's a link to local ones
Waddle and Silvy is updated daily, I would assume the same for any other shows during the day.

To anyone here, I couldn't find a better place to put this. Derrick Rose is gonna be on ESPN news at 3:45 central time.
Definitely a kid though
gonna have to be patient.

abbott makes me mad sometimes
Henry Abbott: Obama or McCain?
Derrick Rose: Obama is from Chicago, of course I have got to pick him. I don’t follow politics much, but I follow him.
I never understood why he’s so hopeful (to the point of being overbearing) that athletes ‘get involved’.

well, for some people
though I’m glad it wasn’t the over-diplomatic ‘I like both teams’.

Who'd he pick?

White Sox

That seals the deal for me
Derrick Rose it is.
"Me like to shoot much" - Andres Nocioni
And why doesn't Simmons get this kind of "access?"
Abbott keeps asking the same softball questions. At least Simmons would ask Rose if he liked Karate Kid more than Teen Wolf.

ESPN went out of their way to acquire TrueHoop.
I sometimes get the feeling that the only thing keeping Simmons around is the fact that he has a gazillion loyal readers.
I think that's the only thing ESPN considers
I like reading TrueHoop, I just wished he would occasionally take a stand on some basketball things that didn’t relate to Portland or the Sonics relocation.

Eric Gordon has no problem.
I really want him on the Bulls now. Not because of his choice, but because he cares</>.
Henry Abbott: Obama or McCain?Eric Gordon: Obama. I follow politics. He’s a people person. He’s in for everybody’s needs.
And this is why I’d love for him to be taken by the Bulls if they thought Ben Gordon was going to leave. It won’t happen, based on what Paxson has said, but I’d love it.
Mike (toronto, on): Eric, a lot of people are comparing you to Ben Gordon of the Bulls. How legit is that? How are you different?Eric Gordon: It’s pretty legit. I’m probably more explosive, and take it to the hole more. I’m a little taller.
Ugggh
I hope your sentiments would be the same if he answered ‘McCain’.
I could care less what a draft pick’s political leanings are. The vast majority of them won’t vote anyway, so it’s moot.

Ummm... go ahead and read the part where I say specifically...
...”not because of his choice.” Thanks, though. I am glad you could care less about what their political leanings are. Does that mean you care too much?
I know who doesn't care if either of you care...

No...
...it doesn’t mean I care too much. Thanks for twisting around a common grammatical or syntactical mistake for no apparent reason. I simply missed where you stated ‘not for his choice’, I didn’t try to poke fun at any apparent slips of the keyboard.
If you’d like me to point out any spelling, grammar, or syntax errors that you make, please let me know. It seems a tad bit trite, though, doesn’t it? Come to think of it, I’ve got waaay too much stuff to do in my life that actually makes the world a better place, than to get into those types of games. I wish you did, too.
My comment still stands – it doesn’t matter what they think, because they likely won’t vote.
by BullsFanInSeattle on Jun 25, 2008 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions
You have better things to do and yet.... all that?
I only pointed out it because you had to get on your high horse first. If you don’t read what someone types and are then critical of they’ve written specifically about the part you failed to read, don’t get angry or upset or flabbergasted if they call you out on it. Sheesh buddy.
And you're right...
...I shouldn’t call people out on twisting around cliches. I’m not perfect, though, my bad. I just get irritated when someone “ugghhh’s” something I typed, and they obviously didn’t read what I typed. A little pet peeve of my mind that gets me going. I’m trying to be better. Oops!
My Uggggh wasn't about your entry....
...it was about the overbearing political climate in this country and the media’s fascination with the political leanings of multi-million-dollar teenage athletes who wouldn’t know a good leader if Teddy Roosevelt rode into the lockerroom on Big Brown.
Sorry that it came off that I was uggggggghing you. I’m not looking forward to this election season AT ALL.

Um, I realize that.
I think it’s funny and creative and topical.
Roosevelt, even though he’s on Mt. Rushmore, is somewhat obscure (often considered one of the "minor" 20th c presidents) to call up for a reference.
However, he is recently getting somewhat rehabilitated as we are drawn into the political/environmental, and now, military and almost emergency economic debate about oil drilling in set aside national parks—parks dating back to TR’s era.
Seattle is an environmentalist’s haven. Hence my question about what prompted BullsFaninSeattle’s reference.
Dum spiro spero! (While there is life, there’s hope!)--Leon Trotsky
Gah...
Thanks for the history lesson. I’m sure you are right. It’s probably an obscure Seattle environmentalist pun, and definitely not a clever jab at the supposed synnergy between sports (Big Brown) and politics (TR), especially considering the context (the synnergy between sports and politics) it was presented in.
You are exhausting.

Yeti Roosevelt on Big Brown?
Now that’s an image.
The whole Teddy Roosevelt thing is just due to self-preservation.
When discussing the 2004 Presidential Election out here in the Pacific Northwest, most folks consider you a heretic if you didn’t vote for John Kerry.
My answer: “I waited until election day, but Harry Truman and Teddy Roosevelt never showed up on the ballot. It was still John Kerry v. GWB”.
In other words – damned if we do, and damned if we don’t. Sorry about the politics.

This is exactly
the kind of crap I was talking about in my post the other day. Politics is like VD…it infects everyone who participates no matter how innocent their intentions. Maybe we should draft Obama…he has a pretty good fade away jumper. He’s a local guys with a great work ethic and has displayed good leadership characteristics. And he has the ability to take a hit and finish. Seriously, who really give a rat’s ass who a nineteen year old kid is voting for. I’m for banning political discussion on this board until after the election. Of course, that’s just my opinion.
I'll wait until after the first 45 times
he gets clobbered in the lane without getting a call…

Did anyone just see Bucher on ESPN?
He mentioned that the Heat have explored talks with Chicago about Wade for multiple players on the team . . .
He didn’t say Rose.

I'd insist on a thorough physical conducted by the world's most insightful

And a three year warranty.
If the Heat are willing to part with Wade, it likely means his body is ruined.
