Ford and Thorpe gab Rose/Beasley
They're more-or-less scared shitless of Beasley's personality.

anyone remember the quote?
that a ‘source’ said they’d be scared to death of handing Beasley the keys to a franchise? I can no longer find it, so it’s possible it was just a Rosehypnol-induced dream.
There’s also this, of course.
Anyway, if anyone’s scared, that makes me scared.

This is one of the better Ford-Thorpe spec fests
The question of fear is a really good.
Ford: David. Which prospect scares you the most in this draft?Thorpe: DeAndre Jordan…Anthony Randolph…JaVale McGee

Can everyone else access this link?
I get a page of gobbledygook.
John Paxson has been like family to me. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother, who also was unable to pull off any deals for superstar free agents or hire a top-notch coach.

Thorpe is huge into 'heartbeat'
I’m not. At least not as much. This pick is a special case though.
At this point I’m officially freaked out if they draft Beasley. The Bulls psychological tests have had recent misfires, namely whatever they did when hiring Paxson.

I don't think you listened to the podcast
They said character was en vogue, so Paxson was obviously a genius ahead of his time.

::Rolls eyes::
I’m officially past sick of the argument and the out of control Rose hype. It looks like he’ll be the pick. Obviously, I have no control over it. I love the Bulls, so on that front I hope I’m wrong and Rose turns out to be 50 times the player Beasley is. I still believe there’s a huge chance Beasley turns out to be the better player, but I’ve spent more than a reasonable amount of time putting that into words so from this point on I leave you all to your Rose orgy.
If nothing else, taking Rose will at least piss off Pat Riley.

less than a week to go!
I’m not even sure this is Rose hype. This is me being scared of Beasley. It’s not why take Beasley, it’s why pass Rose for him?

I'll answer my own question
you say “I still believe there’s a huge chance Beasley turns out to be the better player”, and I have no belief in your belief.
Unfortunately a lot of this comes down to belief (though I believe it takes more belief to believe in Beasley than to believe in Rose), so it’s dicey in terms of a civil argument.

because hes the better player
everyone says that Beasley’s immaturity scares them. when has his immaturity ever affected his game? Hes a goofball off the court, but I’ve seen nothing professionalism and domination on the court.
Says hes just as big of a whacko as Rodman was. Rodman still came in, played his arse off, and got rebounds like there was no tomorrow. Yes, he dressed in a wedding gown and kicked a cameraman etc etc but that didn’t change who he was on the floor. (obviously, the instances when he was suspended did, but you get the point.)

No one was going to build a team around Rodman
by hscs on Jun 20, 2008 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
rodman was just an example
beasley’s game is far better, but thats beside the point.
no one is looking to build a team around whoever we draft. More than likely, we’re going to keep most of the players here and maybe add a complement or two, but this isn’t starting from scratch. Its addressing some serious needs.
by darksmokepuncher on Jun 20, 2008 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
either guy is the new franchise, and the rest will be only viewed as complements around him.

is set for the next decade or so.
there will always be talks about addressing needs. there will not be some huge overhaul of this team with the pick.

blah-blah-blah
I’m not going to argue cliches. The point is the #1 pick is really, really valuable, and could potentially make the biggest positive impact on wins and losses for a very long time. The goal is to avoid wasting it, and the talk about Beasley (basketball and personality-wise) makes him sound like a waste of a #1 pick.
by hscs on Jun 20, 2008 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
complain all you want about his personality
any talk about his game not being worthy of a #1 pick is a joke.

Thank you. Even if they end up "equal" in their production...
...drafting the PG to go along w/ Deng, Thomas and Noah makes it the better pick, imo.
If you had a guarantee that they would both contribute the EXACT SAME number of wins (in whatever way it was determined) by the time they’re 30, who would you draft for this team, right now?

Remember the Wisconsin game in the NCAA tournament
what happened to Beasley in the second half of that game is going to happen to him in the pros.

He couldn't deny the unstoppable force that is Brian Butch
by E-Grizzle on Jun 20, 2008 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea
those 9 points and 4 rebounds by Butch were really the difference maker.
by JSlakov on Jun 21, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was a two man effort
Butch and Stiemsa. Beasley should have gone for 35 in the game to carry KSU to the win, but the TWO 7 footers were the limiting factors. They kept Beasley off the offensive glass. He still got his Drebs, but the lack of Orebs limited his points. No O boards, no tip in or put backs.
by NBA Observer on Jun 21, 2008 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I watched that game, but i'm not sure if I'm remembering what you are referencing...
Didn’t Beasley score 20 points the second half?
by Mattchoo on Jun 21, 2008 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he had only 2 points in the first ten minutes
of the second half.
Butch and Stiemsma, Marcus Landry (future NBA star), and Joe Krabbonhoft all left him frustrated, and the only one of those 4 who is a comparable athlete is Landry.
Stiemsma had a good offensive game against him, too.
Beisley is clearly a talented young man, but if he had trouble against Stiemsma and Butch, what’s he going to do against more talented players in the NBA?
by KT on Jun 21, 2008 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is insane
I’m pretty sure there’s no player in the NBA who went to college who didnt have at least one “bad” game against lesser competition (bad in this case being 23 points and 13 rebounds) especially their freshman year. Should we read that much into Rose having 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting and 5 turnovers against Houston?
by JSlakov on Jun 21, 2008 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
To me drafting Beasley means we have faith in our roster
And frankly, I don’t think we should. BG is going crazy in his Lifetime Fitness fortress of solitude talking about the Knicks, Kirk and Tyrus are riddles wrapped in enigmas, Deng is so decidely “meh”.
I think drafting Rose is a statement of not just what kind of faith the team has in him, but also a statement about the team for the future. There is no reason for complacency, the East got better and our team is decidedly the same one that got rocked by the Pistons 2 years ago. So, the logic may be sentimental, but I think picking Beasley is just an addition of a great talent to a roster, but the combination won’t turn out something magical. Beasley could very well be the better player, but I think Rose will have the better effect on the Bulls, and get some of the players to finally realize what they’re capable of.
by Ozzie Montana on Jun 20, 2008 2:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree. beasley could be great, but that doesn't make our roster seem ready to me. rose, imo, could dramatically improve the value of the rest of our team. the last thing this group needs is another reason to stand around and watch on offense.

Their discussion on carmelo was very interesting.
They talked about the similarities with carmelo and beasley. they both had incredibly successful season – melo won the title and beasley had one of the best college seasons to date. But carmelo had questions out of college about his maturity and the people that he put himself around. Those “red flags” have shown themselves in a big way in recent years. He’s had numerous off-the-court incidents (pot, DUI, etc) and the more disturbing thing has been his immaturity in his on-court play. No one questions Melo’s ability to score the ball – he’s one of the best 4 or 5 offensive scorers in this league. But Thorpe made a good point. Carmelo has seemed disinterested in playing any defense and playing with his teammates. And his play helped result in a first-round playoff drubbing. And now denver seems open to shopping him – their once top 3 pick.
Carmelo is a phenomenal athlete and basketball player. He is a superstar in this league. But my big question – what does his team have to show for it? He hasn’t been that leader and he doesn’t seem to have the work ethic or discipline to become that flawless player. There were red flags of his maturity and such coming into the pros. And those red flags have reared their head in his playing career.
Beasley has “red flags.” Is Beasley a mature person? Is he a hard-working, disciplined person? I have no doubt that he has phenomenal basketball skills – maybe better than Melo had coming in to the NBA. He’ll be a superstar in this league most likely. But as a Bulls fan, I’m much concerned with how our investment (our pick) will help our team. I don’t care near as much about how good a player they end up being. Even if Rose doesn’t have the basketball skills that Beasley has – if he will do the more for the Bulls organization then I could care less how big a star Beasley ends up being.
Back to Melo – the Nuggets are shopping him. Despite being a superstar he’s being shopped by the team that made that initial investment in him. Imagine if we draft Beasley, he becomes a superstar – and we’re shopping him in five years. What’s the point? We probably wouldn’t have won a championship – and we would have just been the first stop for a superstar player.

Which Nuggets GM?
The ESPN ewriters like to call the Nuggets front office a “GM by committee”. It wouldn’t shock me if one them is telling reporters they’re shopping Melo while another offers the denial.
You’d just get the most back from Melo right now. He inked a 5 year extension while Lebron and Wade opted for the more lucrative, albeit risky, 3 year extension.
by NBA Observer on Jun 20, 2008 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry maybe shopping isn't the best word...
he’s been rumored in trade talks by places like ESPN. The Nuggets definitely seem open to making some serious changes, and Melo is included in these talks.

Age Appropriate
Some of the comments being made about Beasley – in the media, on blogs, where have you – are just utterly silly when you take into account his age. Beasley’s a kid. He’s had one year of college. So people are dumping on him because he’s acting his age and deflects things with a slapstick sense of humor.
Most of the humor I’ve seen in interviews was in responce to questions of the variety that Bill Parcels would rip you a new one for asking.
by ziffle on Jun 20, 2008 3:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The #1 pick is a huge investment
why make that investment in a player with red flags? You may not believe his immaturity is a big deal. But it’s obviously not common of all young people – look at Rose. Rose realizes that he should be serious at these potential job interviews because a franchise will be putting all their stock in him for years. You say it’s not a big deal. But it obviously is a big deal – we’re all discussing Beasley’s potential immaturity. I can guarantee the Bulls front office is discussing it.
by swede2287 on Jun 20, 2008 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why isn't Rose acting this way?
Or why didn’t I? Or the millions of other kids in high school who didn’t put rats in teacher’s desks or spray paint principle’s cars? Whether those things are indicative of his future NBA success is obviously up for debate, and whether he will eventually grow out of them is as well… but please, don’t pass those incredibly ridiculous pranks as something everyone has done. Please. It’s ignorant.

I saw we pull the trigger and steal melo from the nuggets.
Kirk Hinrich, Loul Deng, and the 39th pick for MELO.
PG: D Rose L. Hughes or Duhon
SG: Ben Gordon T. Sepholosha or Hughes
SF: Melo A. Nocioni
PF:Tyrus D. Gooden
C: Noah Gooden or Gray
and in 2011 season we make a run for D Wade.

who really likes the idea of using the number 1 pick from the 2008 draft, derrick rose, along with what is essentially the number 2 pick from the 2006 draft, tyrus thomas, to form our pick-and-roll combo for the next several years of bulls basketball? to me, that could be unbelievable. tyrus and derrick have the perfect complimentary skill sets to be a dynamic duo in the nba.

That’s why I don’t want Beasely as much – in the last two years we got a very lucky #2 pick, as well as a #9 pick who would’ve been Top 3 the year before (Thanks, NY!) – both big men. Let’s get them a PG to get the ball to them in a position to succeed.

FYI...
Regarding the pick and roll. When asked about who he would draft Vinny didn’t tip his hand at all, but he did mention that Beasley would be great in the pick and roll because he can shoot from so far out. I’m all for Rose, but I’m just pointing out that the pick and roll from Rose to TT is kind of nullified by the alternative. Good news though, we win either way.
