Rose not planning to visit Miami?

[From the FanPosts. The whole series of quotes is quite weird, but Rose may have accidentally just shown Pax's hand. -ed.]

But as Rose concluded his two-day visit with the Bulls Thursday at the Berto Center, the point guard sounded unsure if he even had a workout scheduled with the Miami Heat, owners of the second pick in the June 26 NBA draft.

"I don't think so," Rose said. "I think I have to ask [agent] B.J. [Armstrong] or someone about it. But all I know now is that I'm here."

Rose's older brother and confidante, Reggie, went even stronger, saying Rose won't visit Miami because "this is our last stop."

I thought I read he worked out for Miami already

Maybe he just meant not going to Miami to work out? As in the went to him.

Here's to what was suppose to be the most exciting offseason in years, but has instead spiraled downward into pitiful morass of indecision. Cheers!

Well, Ira says they met with him....
Following the Mayo workout, the Heat’s scouting staff leaves for the west coast, where it will meet with possible No. 1 overall pick Derrick Rose, the freshman guard from Memphis, and then scout a large open workout of players expected to go in the middle to the end of the first round, with that session hosted by the Warriors.

hmm, but I believe this is a different class of workouts, right?

since they’re after the pre-draft camp in Orlando.

That was after pre-draft as well,

However, Ira also has picked up on the quotes from the press conference today, and he doesn’t mention there having been a prior workout, so it sounds like it either never happened or wasn’t a full workout.

How protective is his brother, Reggie?

I’m a recent Illinois grad, and I remember Reggie almost being his spokesperson when Weber was recruiting him. Does anyone know if Reggie is going to follow everywhere he goes? It almost seems like he’s there anytime Rose speaks, and makes you want to think he might actually sit on the bench during games. Even if he’s just driving Rose to and from practice and games, that’s creepy.

Just after turning on the TV, I saw Wade, Hoiberg, and some other guy....

Reggie is

a nut when it comes to his little bro. I’m a former Illini and DI Sports Editor and he wouldn’t even allow Derrick to talk to us, he’d provide quotes via email or text message and it was all a big, big pain in the ass. I doubt he’ll be as bad now that we’re talking about the NBA but who knows.

by Ugh It Live! on Jun 19, 2008 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The reason Reggie hates Illinois

is because he was snubbed and didn’t get an offer as a recruit himself. So when his brother, and his All-American skills came around, Reggie did everything he could to make sure he DIDN’T go to Illinois.

IMO, if the Rose camp has decided not to work out elsewhere,

it seems more likely that it’s their decision, given the increasingly numerous predictions that he goes first, than that no-news-Pax even privately announced a decision. From all reports, he has nothing to lose by not working out down there.

Yeah, that's probably too strong a phrase,

but there are posts around here that are highly pro-Rose and anti-Beasley. It seems like there are a lot of people expressing that sentiment elsewhere, too, but we’ll never know if they really mean it unless Beasley turns out to be the pick.

I think the anti-Beasley camp

I don't think it's blasphemy at all...

I have questions about it as well, I just feel like I have a good idea what kind of leader option B (Beasley) would be, and I’m not that thrilled about the alternative.

Some teams don’t need a leader and can draft a player like Beasley and plug in his 20-10 output nightly, but the Bulls definitely need a leader. Rose could be that guy, but it’s only natural to question how any rookie can accomplish this.

Don't call me doughboy!

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 19, 2008 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's always some need for vocal leadership

The Clippers plugged Brand in because they had Cassell, who basically is more of a coach than a player these days. I think he’s a horrible player now because all he does is shoot, but signing him to a 1 year deal just to have someone not named Joakim call out players would be nice.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 19, 2008 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I'm thinking more about Miami...

If they draft Beasley, I highly doubt Wade will concede his leadership role on that team.

Beasley will still of course lead by example on the court, but even by his own admission he doesn’t take much seriously. Obviously he takes basketball seriously, but off the court do you envision him calling out players in the locker room? And if so, how do you think they’ll respond?

This isn’t a loaded question, I’m really asking here.

Don't call me doughboy!

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 19, 2008 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do agree that that is a tough line to walk,

but there are people who manage it really successfully. IMO, it’s as likely Beasley finds the balance between play time and work time to become a successful leader as it is Rose develops into a vocal leader.

Here's to what was suppose to be the most exciting offseason in years, but has instead spiraled downward into pitiful morass of indecision. Cheers!

by wjb1492 on Jun 19, 2008 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

I also like the idea of our PG being the vocal leader on the floor.

I think part of the reason Steve Kerr and John Paxson were so successful in hitting clutch 3’s were because they had the fear of Michael holding them accountable for open misses. While MJ wasn’t our PG, the offense always went through him, and he let it be known that he would do anything to win. That fire is contagious. We need that. Every team needs that.

When we analyzed all of the data, including the results of our thorough battery of psychological tests, it became pretty clear that Kevin Love perfectly matches the system we’re trying to build here. Listening to David Robinson on Waddle & Silvy

Talks about how Del Negro was a very quiet guy, but as was Maurice Cheeks, whom he said was a huge surprise when he became a head coach.

Says there is more pressure on a big man than a guard to turn a team around, which I don’t really buy nowadays.

Be a sponge, and have no expectations is his advice for young players.

And if uber-classy Admiral says there’s no big deal if Beasley was a rugrat in high school, then I’ll take that endorsement.

David Robinson...

You are probably being sarcastic, but if not…

4 years at the Naval academy and Olympic competitor BEFORE he entered the NBA.

Michael Beasley…

5 high schools in 4 years plus one year at K-State.

I think it’s fair to say that the two men have a different background, set of ideals, and rules they live by.

It’s nice that Robinson wants to quell any suspicions about Beasley’s pre NBA antics, but I can’t think of a more unqualified person to weigh in.

isn’t a huge Bulls fan. Considering his age he would have been just discovering and learning the game as the Bulls were rocking the 2nd three-peat. That’s some decent inspiration.

I think Mariotti unearthed this and tied it to Reinsdorf-hate

Rose bailed when Jordan did.

They just showed the 84 draft on NBA TV

My God Sam Bowie looked so freaking scared, he would have been a bust without the injuries.

Do you think Pooh meeting VDN had anything to do with it?

maybe he met VDN face to face for the first time and just had an instantaneous man crush like Johnny Pax did.

looks like it may be true

“He was talking about how he wants to run his offense through his defense,” Rose said. [Memphis coach John Calipari and Simeon coach Robert Smith], that’s what they talked about—running their offense through their defense. That’s how I’ve been playing through all my years playing basketball: Defense makes offense. He’s my type of coach.”<

Totally OT:

I’m just wondering what number he’ll wear if the Bulls do take him. Obviously there are a ton of guys who wore 23 while they were growing up (LeBron for one) and with Rose being from Chicago I would expect nothing less but I just wonder which way he’ll go with choosing his new number.

i heard 25 as well

Well you couldn't expect #23

Since it’s retired and all. 25 makes the most sense, unless he adds the numbers up or something.

Even if he went to Miami....

he couldnt wear #23 they retired jordans jersey in miami…but lets hope Miami doesnt have that problem in gettin a jersey# for D Rose

that has got to be one of Riles' stranger moves

retiring the number of the enemy?

kinda makes him look soft.

Too lame IMO

25 just feels like a nice number. I also like 28, half way in between 23 and 33 :)

How about 24 like Kobe

....I know.. I know… but do think Tyrus will be a Bull at the start of the season?

Commical article about Rose in the Miami Herald:

http://blogs.herald.com/miami_heat/2008/06/a-rose-is-a-ros.html

Highly amusing to read the comments at the bottom… Miami is bitter! (Who knew they even had any fans!)

lol!

I’d be bitter too if I had to watch my highly touted 6’8 PF try to post up Dwight Howard.

This still is too incredible for me to totally believe. 1.7% chance and ...........

here we are with Miami upset they are not getting Rose. Unbelievable!

lmao

“people underestimate marcus banks”, not to mention trading haslem for tj ford and signing brand when/if marion opts out. that’s as crazy as some of the crap around here.

but wow.

Hmmmm Matt?

Suckers.
Riley wants Rose oh so bad and you won’t get him! You’ll be stuck with our sloppy seconds and that looney tune will drive Wade crazy and drive him right back to Chi-town in 2010 to partner up with D-Rose and the soon to be champion Bulls (for the 7th time!)

By the way, your roster SUCKS. Besides Wade, you have nothing… it’s incredible how bare your cupboard is!

LOL the bitter Miami Heat fans, I expect 30% of them to come out and support their team with the passion that is synonymous with that great organization!
