Nocioni Destination: Portland
"He’s a guy not afraid of working," the Portland coach said of Alexander, later saying the former Mountaineer reminds him of Chicago’s Andres Nocioni. "He is very physical, he is very athletic, he can shoot the ball and he’s a small forward who could play the four. The way the NBA’s going to the power forward being able to spread the defense (with his shot), I could see him having that type of versatility."

PS: Deron Washington in an "intriguing prospect" for us
in the 2nd round. He’s not going to make jump shots or spread the floor, but he plays defense, has crazy athleticism, and can most definitely be paired with Derrick Rose.

3-pointers
And he shot only 41 3-pointers (making 11), less than a third the number he attempted as a sophomore."In Huggins’ system, you have guys who shoot 3s, but he needed me to do other things," Alexander said. "I can (shoot 3s), dependent upon what my team needs."
That quote alone puts him ahead of Nocioni. Noce shoots them whether you need them or not.

well that's good news
if they indeed want Noc, pawning off him AND Hinrich could be major 2010 savings.
Then again, they likely know they can get similar production for 40% of the price with the 13th pick.
And of course, I can only assume that this will be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to extrapolating from this quote :)

I need an army of yes men
I don’t want to trade Noc. I want to trade his contract. I’d love to get my hands on the 13th pick and a player by trading Noc.
Your production to price ratio is killing me.

just listened to a Chad Ford podcast
with the great Kevin Pritchard.
He talks about some prospects and mentions the value of a ‘spread 4’. He totally wants Nocioni, I’m convinced :)
Also, he exudes many of the windbag traits that Paxson does. Talks about how he passed up on more talented guys because they didn’t fit into Blazers culture. gag. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens when they want contract extensions and Nate McMillan bails on them. Maybe even the Oregonian blog will say a not-so-nice word…then we’ll see character! ha!

Pritchard is sharp, but not too sharp
He obviously wants to inflate Aldridge’s rebounding numbers, but I’m on to him already.

I'm most worried about Portland getting Augustin, Westbrook or Alexander
Take Chalmers. Take Chalmers. Take Chalmers.
Yes, in my mind, it’s the Bulls vs. the Blazers FOREVER!

Nocioni = Alexander?
Oh, wait, now I remember. Right. I had forgotten the time Nocioni dunked and hung on the rim from his elbow. Yes, yes. They are quite similar. Very white, very difficult-to-define facial hair. And, of course, the incredible hops.
John Paxson has been like family to me. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother, who also was unable to pull off any deals for superstar free agents or hire a top-notch coach.

I'll shit a brick if Alexander is any good
A non-efficient post player in college, who has already put as much muscle as he can onto his frame, who happens to be a 6’8” combo forward with a career 3pt% under 30%? And he’s a white american – pc or not, that has to be mentioned when so many before him have failed miserably.

Did anyone forget Nocioni set the record for rebounds as a rookie?
It’s the hair, he was so much more clean cut in 2005. Get a hair cut ya hippie!

I don't understand
How does this say Pritchard wants Nocioni? This is just basic post-workout blabbering.
Everyone who comes in for a workout gets a few good things said about them to the media, a basic comparison, and we’re on our way. I wouldn’t take this quote for anything other than that.
Does he even say he really likes Alexander? KP keeps his cards close to his magnificent chest, and the most positive thing I remember him saying about Alexander is that KP doesn’t think he’ll be available at #13.
Good lord, I hope he doesn’t like Annoycioni. I can’t stand that guy.
KP harps on “culture” a lot, but coming from the Jail Blazer days I understand. If ya listen to a KP interview, when he is tired or isn’t sure what to say he says “culture” or he goes “and you know what the fun thing is? The fun thing is (blank)”, like “and, uh, you know, you know what the fun thing about this is Chad, is that we get to really know who the player as a person is”. It’s always “you know what the fun thing is” with this guy!
By a ‘spread 4’, I think he’s referring to LMA, Outlaw, and Frye, the most spreadiest 4’s you can get. Together they average 6 rebounds per 40.
And just in case it wasn’t a joke… contract extensions? Whose gonna want a contract extension and not get it? Paul Allen is RICH, he don’t care. He has BILLIONS. Everyone a max deal, what’s it to him? He had 100 million plus salaries before the Knicks did even, in the ‘90s. Nate McMillan ain’t goin’ nowhere anytime soon, he loves KP as much as us Blazer fans do. Nate makes like 6 million a year, and if we keep doing well Paul Allen will pay him more.
I wish you guys read the Oregonian page before KP took over. Those guys HATED the Blazers, and for good reasons. The old Blazers regime had the stupidest “war” with the media I’ve ever seen, started recording and posting every recording online of every encounter with the beat writers and columnists, firing people they accused of leaking info to the media, etc. They were like the Knicks in their dysfunction and idiocy.
So coming from that, coming from the Jail Blazer days, you got KP who the media loves and who fans love and who has actually turned the team from a joke to a future for-sure contendor in less than two years… I think the positivity is understandable.
Also understandable is the other teams’ fans wishing the Blazers were still like the old Blazers. If you got a smart guy who knows HOW to spend Paul Allen’s limitless money, it can go a long way.
Please Jesus, no Nocioni.

If you mean they are very positive there
Then sure, I agree. They are very positive NOW, but were very negative before—and for good reason.
The old Blazers management were idiots.
It’s all the same writers, the same columnists (one new beat writer is the only change, but the main guy, Jason Quick, remains). They’re very positive about this current Blazer team and management, and partly because it’s such a huge improvement team wise, and partly because the new management actually treat the media respectfully and don’t treat them like the enemy.
Plus, really, there isn’t much negative to report. John Canzano, the Oregonian columnist, regularly had very negative articles about the Blazers. He takes a populist approach, like he is arguing for the common man. He is insufferable. Once, he blasted Darius Miles for not paying for his gas himself—he was late to practice and didn’t have his wallet when he stopped for gas at a gas station by the practice facility. He sent a Blazer employee to pay it for him. This was nearly a full article about how bad the Blazers and Miles are for this.
Nowadays, the most Canzano can come up with is that the Blazers are cutting ties with a company called Global Spectrum, who runs the Rose Garden, for a much bigger and successful company that I forget the name of. Again, Canzano is arguing for the lil’ guy because he’s looking out for us.
The media guys haven’t changed, just the Blazers organization. With Jason Quick, the beat writer (and main author of the blog you linked to), he reported bad stuff when bad stuff was happening. Now, it’s pretty much all GOOD stuff, so he reports all good. Canzano the muckraker, just doesn’t have much to complain about so he doesn’t write much on the Blazers anymore (except when he does his patented heartwarmer style piece).
I can’t imagine what they’re NOT reporting that could be negative.
The local media, which was very negative before for good reasons, is drinking the Blazers/KP kool-aid. Only, it’s for a good reason as well. Everything is coming up roses over there in Portlandia. Oden’s healthy and in great shape, Rudy is coming over, there might be trouble ahead if Jarrett Jack isn’t traded because Rudy will take his minutes, but honestly… there just isn’t really any bad stuff to report.
The biggest controversy comes from some fans who think Nate hates Sergio Rodriguez because he won’t play him, completely ignoring the fact that Sergio really sucked this past season.
It’s just a different situation all over now. The news is good because the news is good.
It wasn’t like this not too long ago, and that blog was as negative as anybody.

Also, I meant to originally add
I know you guys hate Nocioni and I know I hate Nocioni, but I really think he has real value to a lot of other GMs and teams. They see his ‘hustle n’ grit’, and don’t see his annoyingness.
If the Bulls wanna move him, I don’t think it’d be that tough.
Just my opinion from reading general league-wide stuff. I even think he could maybe get more for the Bulls than Hinrich, just because drafting Rose knocks Hinrich value down.

Oops, one more note
That blog is also pretty much a ‘fan run’ blog, that also includes stuff from the Oregonian Blazer beat writers. For a second I thought you had linked directly to the beat writer section.
It’s not really the Oregonian, it’s Oregonlive, which hosts online articles for the Oregonian and other local crap. The writer for that blog isn’t an Oregonian employee, nor a writer for the Oregonian.
He’s just a fan who also runs other blogs for Oregonlive.com.
If you thought it was actual media saying the homer-fan type stuff, I could see the confusion.

thanks for the info on that distinction
I also read the beat reporters blog, and they’re not homers (or incompetent like ours).
Can’t say I read the rest of the paper, though your assessment on Canzano is something I’ve read plenty of times before.
