[From the fanshots. Tyrus drooling always has a special place here. -ed]

Check out this photo of TT and Deng with David Thorpe at IMG Academy this summer - I thought TT was about the same height, maybe one inch taller than Deng, but this photo makes it look like he's got at least 2-3 inches on him. Does a legit 6'10" Tyrus Thomas make anyone else drool even more about his potential?

I’m more impressed with how happy they look together (awww)

seriously

If TT and Deng are spending that much time together you’ve got to think their chemistry is going to be great next year – the only problem is I don’t see how those two can play a two-man game given their skill sets. Maybe (hopefully) Luol is really working on his ball handling and they’ll be able to run some pick and rolls. At the very least this bodes well for TT’s emotional state, assuming he and Lu are getting along well.

Nope

But I think Amare is overrated to begin with. As seemingly with every NBA player that appears on the cusp of greatness, he probably just needs better guys around him to get there.

by NBA Observer on Jun 13, 2008 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Other than the fact

he doesn’t play defense. Sure he isn’t overrated at all.

Doesn't play D?

This year he averaged 7 defensive rebounds a game (Tyson Chandler averaged 7.7).

He averaged 2.1 blocks a game (Only Marcus Camby, Chris Kaman, Josh Smith, Samuel Dalembert, and Dwight Howard had more).

This “fact” that he doesn’t play D is a lie. The guy is a beast on both ends of the floor, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Gonna have to agree to disagree

on Amare’s defense. His defensive intensity and awareness is nil, blocks or no.

It’s not something I’ve analyzed statistically, but between watching games and reading the available scout-y analysis…well, the circumstantial evidence is pretty overwhelming.

How about the fact that...

He’s in the top 10 in steals for big men too, and remember Phoenix runs… A LOT! That means that when they miss long he’s running more than most.

Don't call me doughboy!

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 13, 2008 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

The numbers are inflated

Amare will inevitably have padded stats due to a greater number of possessions on both ends.

by NBA Observer on Jun 14, 2008 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll gladly tell you otherwise

The guy has the attention span of a 7 year old after drinking 5 cans of Coke on defense. Chris Bosh averaged 42 points and 13 boards against the Suns while Amare was guarding him. Howard averaged 32 and 20, and Al Jefferson averaged a 30 and 15.

He has exceptional athleticism, and that leads to big time blocks and steals. As an anchor of team defense? He’s horrible. Tim Duncan destroyed him last year in the playoffs that Kerr imploded the roster to bring Shaq in just to beat the Spurs. His own coaches admit he’s not a great defender and loses focus all too often. Maybe that’s a byproduct of D’Antoni’s offense, but I won’t confuse him for a big man who can defend.

Rusty Longley v 2.0

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 13, 2008 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough...

But despite the fact that he might have a short attention span he did still manage to play defense enough to average some pretty nice defensive stats (maybe thats more an indictment of stats I guess).

Chalk that up athleticism or whatever, but he still averaged 7 rebounds (on D alone), 2.1 blocks, and about a steal a game.

Don't call me doughboy!

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 13, 2008 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

blocks (and steals)

definitely don’t make a good defender. think ai or even larry hughes at his best – good for gambling on steals, but actually really great defenders? not really.

as ozzie said, amare’s athleticism helps him get those blocks (same with tyrus) but he’s not a good defender. on one of the posts about camby, i believe someone wrote a very good explanation about why camby is able to get blocks but isn’t as good a defender as everyone thinks.

by Jaina on Jun 13, 2008 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough...

I’ll be the first person to acknowledge that stats don’t always tell the truth.

I just don’t think it’s fair to say he doesn’t play D at all (how’s that for a double negative).

Don't call me doughboy!

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 13, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Defense has always been his weakness...

but he has vastly improved defensively this last year. And he will probably get even better defensively with Terry Porter coaching.

And he’s arguably the top 3 offensive forces at the pf position in this league.

I love Tyrus’ potential, but just don’t say that Tyrus will be better than Amare. That’s insulting everyone’s intelligence here.

Unless you mean Amare when he was out with a knee injury...

Then sure, If you add about 35 pounds of muscle, roughly 100% more hustle and work ethic, one of the best PG’s in the NBA feeding him the ball, and about 2 or 3 hundred more games of actual NBA experience (with quality minutes in semi meaningful games). Oh yeah, a decent jump shot might help, and a propensity to not commit so many fouls wouldn’t hurt either.

by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 13, 2008 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

that's true - c'mon people

Tyrus has a ridiculus amount of improving to do before he can be said in the same sentence as Amare. It’s just unrealistic to have the high expectations you have for Tyrus. I don’t expect Thabo to become Kobe Bryant. I don’t expect Tyrus to become Amare.

by swede2287 on Jun 15, 2008 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Tyrus definitely had a frame that

hadn’t finished growing – if I had to guess I would say he was 6’10. Last year he was already slightly taller than the 6’9 Deng. When he puts on weight – and he will, remember this is a guy who just stopped growing – he’s going to have ideal size and crazy athleticism for pf.

Do not trade Tyrus. That’s the only thing I know – Rose or Beasley, del Negro or Collins, I can’t be sure. Just do not trade Tyrus.

That would be horrible...

Pax trades Thomas, and then learns from Del Negro or one of the coaches that Thomas is 6’11. Ouch. I doubt that would happen. Pax would bring him into his office to tell him the bad news, and then notice he grew a couple inches.
Tyrus: “Pax, why did you want to see me again?”
Pax: “Errhh, uggghhh…. just wanted to know how your summer was going. Yeah, that’s it.”

Bulls Web-site is really outdated now...

Deng is a legit 6’9, because they re-measured him one summer. But I remember during his rookie year, Thomas was at least as tall as Deng when I saw them standing next to each other in a game.

That said, the Bulls web-site lists Deng at 6’9 and Thomas at 6’8. That is definitely wrong.

I don't know why these figures cannot be accurate

Chad Ford is still listing Beasley as 6’10” in his mock drafts. I don’t get why it is so difficult for the stat people to get these figure right. They’re pretty important.

According to the Draft Express databases

Luol Deng measured at 6’7” without shoes, and 6’8” with shoes. Meanwhile, Tyrus measured at 6’7.25” without shoes and 6’8.25” with shoes.

So, reasonably/conservatively thinking, Tyrus may have grown three-quarters of an inch to 6’8” without shoes/6’9” with shoes, which would be exactly one inch taller than what Luol measured at a few years ago.

So the improvements from his first to second year – from making 20% to 35% of his jump shots, 61% to 74% on FTs, a 63% increase in assist rate, and a 41% decrease in turnover rate – isn’t considered “growing up”? On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....

write away

I don’t mind the long comments. It implies at least some thought went into them…which lately makes them ribbon-worthy :)

kudos to you, though.

overreacting

this could have a lot to do with Deng’s posture. Maybe Thomas is standing straight up and Deng is slouching. This seems to really be grasping at straws to me.

Tyrus is on tiptoes

another sign of his immaturity. :(

Let's enjoy the moment!

VDN talks about Tyrus, Thabo and Noah. Tyrus grows 2 inches. Life is good!

by chgobr on Jun 13, 2008 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

If Tyrus grew two inches

I think he could lead the league in blocks, 6’10” or 6”11” makes a big difference especially when he was just under 6’9”. With his quick leaping ability and wingspan ther’es no reason this kid can’t become a leage defense.

by armstrong2389 on Jun 13, 2008 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

I almost forgot

The best consequence of his growing (if, in fact, this happened) is that we may never again be subject to the inanity of Tyrus playing small forward.

I'd rather think of a outside shot!

but then I’d starting thinking about the Bulls drafting Beasley instead of Derrick Rose

by exult463 on Jun 13, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

If Tyrus is 6'11"

then forget about even playing him at PF. He’d be a center – a more athletic, more complete, slightly shorter Tyson Chandler – complete with the awesome point guard. Move Noah to PF where he makes more sense anyway with his lateral defensive ability, and suddenly we’re onto something inside.

Weight a minute?

He would have to gain atleast 25 pounds

by TRiCioNeRo on Jun 14, 2008 3:19 AM CDT up reply actions

no no no

he needs to play as an athletic, quick power forward.

by swede2287 on Jun 15, 2008 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Some say...

A picture is worth a thousand words, I would say this picture is worth not trading him away this season.

DONT TRADE TYRUS PAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look what Chris Paul did for Tyson he cant even catch the ball….Tyrus has way better hands and a lil more athletic abiliy than Tyson…..they can very dangerous sooner than we think depending on how quick d rose develops
