Abbott?
I know TrueHoops Henry Abbott loves this blog, maybe he could give some tips on how to gain press privledges.
I have been reading truehoop for years, well before it was on ESPN. It’s what led me here last offseason. And the interviews and access always made it my favorite place to read NBA.
Not saying this place isn’t great Matt, because it is. But I would love it if there was Bulls access that didn’t get summerized by the same 4 mainstream beat writers over and over again.
there's a place called mouth piece sports?
So he’s going to take them out to lunch. Make sure they pick up the tab.
I dunno if anyone saw the in studio with Kendal and Norm
before the conference.
But they pretty much ripped into this hiring.
Saying a young team does not need an inexperienced coach.
I would be upset if I were him too
everyone else got an interview.
NVL is old...
And Kendal shouldn’t box anymore.

When I did that standard deviation of coach's contracts
I had to rely on a lot of third party estimates to get a reading on what various coaches earned.
It looked to me as though a lot of teams don’t release that information.

Correct
I take as many originally source media reports and summarize the data to come up with the contract. NBA franchises are privately owned corporations. They don’t have to disclose shit. Somebody leaks the details. It’s not always agents or the player/coach either.

It doesn't sound to me that there
won’t be a trade.
At least until Vinny gets a full season with this group
well the moment you say
Player x sucks and were trading him, his value goes down so I would not read too much into this.
"it doesn't sound to me that there won't be a trade"?
- or do you mean -
“it’s sounds to me that there won’t be a trade?”
Either way, Devin47 is correct. And there will be a trade… at least one.
Ha.
I love that I have no idea what Edicus meant, but then either way, Devin47’s response was valid and correct.
I love

I think Vinny should hire Stan as his first assistant, just for luck’s sake. Then David Stern could just cut to the chase and give the Bulls the trophy at the beginning of next season (after Stan rattles off the ticket hotline number, of course).
Didn't you hear how many family members he had there?
Pax introduced his wife, kids, parents, sisters, a nephew! If the Del Negro’s alone clapped, it would have been a loud applause…

the fact that his hairline will probably be receding in a month or so.
Vinny has the demeanor of a "player's coach" but
the management experience (and risk of this hire to Paxson/Reinsdorf) suggests he won’t be too much of a pushover….which is usually the risk of hiring a former player who has never had any other occupation before.

I liked that Paxson said the team's spirit was gone and needed to be rejuvenated.
He implied, though not said, that berating this team(Skiles) was counter productive. Thabo, Noah and TT’s mention was a big positive for me as was the emphasis on player development. This went as well as you could have expected.

Vinny already started with the wiseguy routine

He likes Thabo, Noah, and Tyrus
because they are athletic, multi-dimentionable and versitile.
Beasley is multi-dementional
Gordon and Deng are NOT multidementional
what’s it all mean-I can only hope
Deng is more multi-dimensional than all of those guys.
He has a good (although not great) offensive game to go along w/ pretty good defense. Thomas and Noah have the potential to be very multi-dimensional, but aren’t there yet. Thabo? Not so sure.
By multidimentional
he meant “able to play more than one position”
Then that rules out Beasley.
At the Lottery-winner presser, Paxson said pretty categorically that he sees Beasley as a four.
Um, just because he likes having pieces that are multi-dimensional....
doesn’t mean that he will only have a roster filled with players who must be able to play multiple positions. You’re reading way too into this.
And btw, Beasley can play 3 or 4, Rose is a 1. (Not that I want Beasley, but just saying…)
Praise cousin Vinny
I am astounded by the level of competence he has shown in his press conference. WOW.. I can see how Paxson hired him. He is everything we wanted in a coach from what he says, now I want to see if he can do it. I just want to also say how great it will be next year when TNT does those start of quarter interviews my friends wont make fun of how stupid our coach sounds (EHHUMM Boylan) He is good with media, he is quick to answering questions, he is good at diverting things to the right places, and he seems really sharp. Besides, since the NBA is rigged, I think having my cousin Vinny’s network in the MOB can not be understated.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.
If there is anyone
that was previously upset about the Bulls hiring a coach with no experience, i’m not exactly sure how this press conference would help to ease any of your concerns. I still have MAJOR questions about this guy’s abilities. Just cause he can answer a few questions in a professional fashion is hardly a sign of anything.
Someone mentioned this earlier, when asked about his offensive and defensive ideas, he said he wants an offense like the Suns and a defense like the Spurs. Come on! So does everyone else in the NBA. It’s not that i’m dissapointed, cause I wasn’t expecting that much in the first place, but how about some more detail and a little more confidence. I guess I just wasn’t sold the way I wanted to be. I have just as many questions right now as I did before this. Other than that, he seems like a pretty nice guy.
What did you expect him to say?
It’s only a press conference. He’ll be judged (most likely harshly) on his actions during the season I’m sure.
Don't call me doughboy!
by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 11, 2008 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, he pretty much accomplished everything he possibly could today
I’m sure most of us are still waiting to see how this plays out on the court during the season – but at least we know a little more about what his plans are, and those suit me pretty darn well. He also seems really easy to relate to, and that gives me a lot of hope for the relationship with the players.
What it comes down to, though, is that the only thing he could succeed or fail at today was the press conference. I’d say he succeeded.
Here's to what was suppose to be the most exciting offseason in years, but has instead spiraled downward into pitiful morass of indecision. Cheers!
Agreed...
And it’s a nice bonus that he’ll probably give some pretty decent interviews during the season too… Plus he’s dreamy.
Don't call me doughboy!
by Khalid El-Amin on Jun 11, 2008 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions
I feel better...
I would rather have a coach who says all the right things, and then tries to do all the right things… and fails, than a some retread who just tries to fit our roster into his regular cookie cutter philosophy.
And for our purposes the right things are, develop and teach our players, play to the strengths of the roster, focus on defense, adapt and grow as the team changes…
And he said all the right things there.
Let me get this straight....
So Vinny says he’s a magician, huh… Maybe that’s how he will get the players’ respect, maybe bust out a few magic tricks on the first day to lighten the mood?
Can we get a photoshop of Vinny on David Copperfield’s body?
That crystal ball he kept referencing will probably get him out of some bad jams this season, as well.
Can’t wait. Vinny has all the answers!

I liked the way he talked.
If he can coach so well as he talks, maybe we could have a good year after all
p.s. I hated when he mentioned Hughes and the time both spent in Golden State. I just hope that he can realize that Hughes plays like shit and have to go from this team…
When are you going to do something good Pax?
he played with Hughes...
He probably realize’s that he sucks. I’m wondering how Hughes will respond to his former teamate now being his head coach.
Then again, I’m not sure it matters how the fifth best guard on our team reacts to the new coach.
WSCR's Jonathan Hood will have Paxson on his show this evening.
The promo I heard didn’t say exactly what time Paxson would be on, but the show starts at 7:30 local.

I like the VDN hire more after this press conference
I am leaning towards saying I feel better now about the VDN hire than I would had Collins been the hire and I was all for Collins. VDN is a smart man, so if I’m going to take a chance, I want to take a chance with a smart man who also has basketball intelligence. Paxson is a smart man, too. I have been almost preposterously critical of this organization but I like this move considering the alternatives that were available. Pax could have easily went with a Casey, a Flip, or waited for Thibodeau but he’s taking a calculated risk on VDN when he doesn’t have to. This is not a saving face move, this is a genuine hire of who was perceived as the third best candidate. Pax even gave some indications that he didn’t necessarily give Collins an up front blessing as has been reported. As much as I’ve criticized Pax, I don’t think he is a liar or an embellisher. He’ll tell you he’d rather not say than to throw out some misdirection.
I am feeling better now going into the draft. I am comfortable that they’ll take Rose. I think this team can win 38-40 games next year, which would be a marked improvement and probably as good as this team would have seen out of D’Antoni and Collins. I don’t buy all that “immediate 50 win” BS unless everyone was counting on Rose being the primarily catalyst because as this roster currently stands pre-draft, there are still no all-stars on this team and certainly no one who I could see being a large enough difference maker to aid the new coach to a 17+ win improvement. There is no MJ and Scottie, no Grant Hill on this team.

When I watch NBA games I often call the fouls before the referees do. Sometimes it’s a gift. Most of the time it's troublesome. - NBA Observer
38-40 wins should be the low end of expectations
This team is only a season removed from winning 49 games with a point differential normally associated with a 55 win team. Much of the core from that team is still intact and at least returning to their 06-07 performance levels isn’t entirely out of the question. It would be silly to expect too much from Rose. All the team really needs is for him and Hinrich to combine to outperform what Hinrich and Duhon did at PG during 06-07. Again, within the realm of possibility. Throw in that the Bulls should get much better production out of their front court with Thomas, Noah and Gooden than they had out of Wallace, Brown, and Allen. Maybe Vinny’s press conference got me too jacked up, but even barring any other moves outside of drafting Rose, I see 50 wins and third in the East as realistic expectations.
We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes, they just don't know where to look.

Yet it never has seemed more obvious that Paxson is getting major interference from above. Some of Paxson’s peers insist that the signing of Ben Wallace and corresponding exile of Tyson Chandler, as well as the Bulls’ chronic inability to make the big trade splash we’ve been expecting for years, should go on Reinsdorf’s record more than Pax’s. One source insisted to me this week that one reason the boss ultimately favored Del Negro over Casey and Person is because he scored highest with the team psychologist Reinsdorf employs with the Bulls and baseball’s Chicago White Sox.
