If We Only Had Pick #2

Its only been a few days and already my head hurts from reading and my fingers are getting syndromed with all this typing. My eyes hurt from watching Beasley and Rose highlight vids on youtube and i find I am exactly where i started when i found out we got the number 1 pick. Stuck!!

Beasley or Rose, its a question on everybodys mind and will remain on everybodys mind, and all i can think is "Man I Feel Sorry for John Paxson". The tribune had an article released on lottery day that Paxson was told by the gm of the Blackhawks to "enjoy the pick" but i dont see how he really could. Beasley or Rose, who is the better player, who addresses our needs more, who do we trade if we get those players, and who is the coach! Having won the lottery made nothing easier, and maybe made things harder.

We all know the stories, we know the pros and cons of each player by heart, and yet does no one else fear the future of both the picks. On the one hand people would say we have win/win. But lets really think about this, lets think about what paxson must feel especially with US as the fans of his organization. If paxson chooses Rose and trades hinrich somewhere and we learn that Hinrich is having a career year (tyson chandler effect) and Beasly is being Beastly and already demanding double teams what will we think. Im sure Pro-rose fans would come up with "were still young we have time to get better" but Paxson would be criticized harshly for picking the wrong player. If paxson picks beasley and he turns out to be a more athletic zach randolph then what? Rose goes on to lead miami and wade to the finals and we and media curse Paxson some more.

Ahh but if we had the #2 pick...then it would be easy. Riley would choose who he wanted, and we wouldnt have to think hard, we would get the other guy. As bulls fans we wouldnt have cared to have the 2nd pick, hell we were supposed to all the way at 9 so the second pick would be a treat. Maybe Riley would pick the better player, the guy who could take a team all the way, but the bulls and paxson would be fine. THey had the number two, it was a no contest who the bulls had to pick. So what if the other guy was better, everyone and his mother would have picked the remaining of Beasly and Rose.

But we have the number 1 pick. We need both players and we can only have one, Rose or Beasley...Beasley or Rose?

Sure we can swap the picks with miami now, paxson could be ultra smart and package a few unwanted players and pick up another draft pick or maybe land marion or something. Let Miami have the first pick and take the easy road. Alas, if miami went all the way everyone would blame paxson for switching the pick.

"Have fun with the pick"? Well paxson, im not having fun having debates and thoughts about who should be drafted, who should stay, who should go. No theres no fun here, how about you....are you having fun paxson? And how about you fellow blogabullers...because theres one more month of this left. One more month of waiting, hoping, praying, and ceasing of breath...and then after we choose who we choose, we will be forced to wait to see "Did Paxson screw up?"

Ive been preaching second chances for the bulls organization....well i guess "lady luck" has just handed the bulls and its fan one doozy of a chance....one hell of a test.

Not fun

When you fall short of being Number 1 in anything….If we did get the Number 2 pick.It would be another classic example of Paxson falling short in the draft once again…He needed the break…Chicago overall needed this break to revive Basketball …Rose seems to be locked in for the bulls.

Why not get both?

I will be the first to admit I don’t fully understand how all the contracts in the nba work with salary cap issues, etc. However, someone else had mentioned this wild idea in another thread and I figure why not at least make the offer. Pat Riley said if the right trade came along he’d listen. Granted this wouldn’t be a Lebron type trade, but it would improve both teams rosters. I say offer something to the effect of Kirk, TT, and Noc, (and basically whatever needs to be added from both sides to work) for the number two pick. If Marion stays that would give Miami a solid lineup minus the center and we would have something like this:

Noah
Beasley
Deng
Gordon
Rose

I know it’s a stretch, but i definitely wouldn’t mind that. Plus Pax’s decision would be made a little easier at that point.

what about

kirk & Deng for #2 pick , M. Banks

Bullls:

PG: Rose, Banks
SG BG, Hughes
SF: Noc, Thabo
PF: Thomas, Beasley, Gooden
C: Noah, Gooden, Gray

Heat:

Hinrich
Wade
Deng
Marion
C-?

Right on!

I totally agree. Having both pick would solve 2 out of our 3 needs/flaws a pure point guard and an inside scorer. The only thing left is getting a big shooting guard. I don’t care if we have to deplete the roster in order to get one. I’d rather have 5 good starters with future and that are playing their natural positions and no depth in the bench than having 5 mediocre starters that play out of position and 3 or 4 substitues that are also mediocre and play out of position.

If we can end up with a starting line up of: Rose – (Big shooting guard) – Deng – Beasly and Noah, then I don’t care if the bech looks like: Shannon Brown – Cedric Simmons – Aaron Gray….

Has some merit, since Marion, Wade are older

...especially with Wades true age at least +2 because of banging

Miami would never do that

That’s no more fair than Aldridge + 13th pick for the #1 pick.

not to 'pull an alec'

but wanting to drop down a pick just to alleviate the pressure of picking the right guy says alot about a person.

I'm calling a foul.

I never suggested-and would never suggest-dropping down in the draft.

What I suggested, oh thou Karl Rove, was trying to use some of the excess on the roster to get back in the draft AGAIN at the tail end of the lottery.

go away

I was referencing the tendency to extrapolate or interpret what’s said here as revealing a personal character trait.

Yeah, well,

so I missed your point. I take back my character extrapolation.

Mayo at 2nd pick

this is heavily rumored right now. Chad Ford talks about in on ESPN. The Heat evidently are not very high on Beasley. Don’t be surprised to see them trade the pick.

All those millions and all those character issues...

not a heady coctail.

I think, in their imaginations, GM’s are superimposing Zach Randolph’s head on Beasley’s body.

And OJ Mayo is a character upgrade?

Both have reportedly been “on their best behavior” at college, I don’t see why they wouldn’t take the player with more upside potential (yes that’s Hubie Speak)

heh

not exactly.

I think Riley may actually be in a quandry…that he’s not just blowing smoke. Remember that pre-draft talk from Wade?—saying he thought the Heat “deserved” the first pick? Also the Wade interview during the tournament, when he said the guy he wants is “still playing?”

Riley is f'ed

He went from a core of Odom, Butler, Wade to Shaq and Wade to Wade and Marion…and Dorrell Wright? He was absolutely hinging on Rose coming to Miami, and now he is probably sad, slicking his hair back without the usual pizazz.

Personally, I don’t know why they don’t take Beasley. A frontcourt of Marion/Beasley/Mourning+Haslem isn’t the worst, and a backcourt of J-Will and Wade. That’s gotta be good for 40+ wins in the East, especially if Wade is back to his “Fall down 7 get up 8” routine. Plus, I think Beasley could mature in Miami, Mourning is a tough veteran dude who would crush him if he acted like a kid, Wade isn’t going to accept much bullshit after last season…..it could be good for them. (Then again, I hate Riley and hope he picks Brook Lopez).

correct me if im worng

but didnt pat riely show no interset in wade before the draft too? i remember bulls were very anxious as the 7th pick came and wade was still on the table, but didnt riely kinda pick him out of nowhere? i just dont trust that guy at all. if it were me id have evryone believe that we were drafting beasly and on the day draft rose, to screw with riely. or the other way around, depending on what paxson decides.

I don't know what to put there...

by Yibs on May 23, 2008 9:40 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

While it might be easier...

to have the second pick in a draft, I’m pretty sure that any half-decent GM doesn’t worry about public perception. If my GM would rather have the left-over pick instead of his choice then I really wouldn’t want him making decisions because it shows he’d be reactive instead of pro-active. Is that guy likely to approach other teams with trade scenarios or just wait until someone comes to him?

It’s been said before but basketball is the only sport where one player changes the whole team and getting your choice of that player should be a dream scenario (especially if you’re team didn’t really earn that chance – ala the Spurs and Duncan with Robinson injured).

piccolo

you’re thinking too much. Don’t fool yourself. Beasley will be very good. But even if he doesn’t look better the first year, Rose is the pick.

No, No, A Thousand Times No

Essentially you’d rather have the #2 pick to avoid some of the criticism that would come with picking the wrong guy at #1?

Ask the 1998 San Diego Chargers how that strategy worked out for them.

Insert clever and witty remark slash pun here!
