Poll - Hinrich Trade

As a Blazer fan, I have been looking for PG options.  After the Lottery ended I was convinced that we had to get Hinrich somehow.  After sleeping on it, I don't really want him anymore unless for a good deal.  He's a better version on Steve Blake but for three times the price.  I wouldn't mind trading Jack but my hope is that we draft Westbrook and see if one of our four PGs will step up next year.  I also want to keep that Raef LaFrentz expiring contract for the trading deadline next year - who knows maybe another Kwame Brown deal may come along.

I joined your blog yesterday to put a poll up and even though I've changed my mind about Hinrich I've decided to ask it anyway.   Answer the poll assuming we can make all the details work.

Poll
If you take Rose #1, would you trade Hinrich and Simmons for Raef LaFrentz's expiring contract, Jarrett Jack, and an '08 second round pick?

I don't think the numbers would work

because of Hinrich’s base-year compensation restriction; Chicago would have to sweeten the deal a bit more to make the numbers work, I think (like maybe instead of Simmons, you get Nocioni).

Actually, Hinrich's BYC is up July 1

Adding Nocioni, who’s in the same boat as Hinrich as far as BYC, would only make it way too much money from Chicago

if you make it a 1st round pick, okay

but I don’t see any reason to trade a potential NBA starting guard for a back-up one, no matter how much money you save. Are you Jerry Reinsdorf’s accountant or something?

Jack started every game two years ago

He was a little miffed he got benched, but then played like his ass was on fire after a while. He just makes too many mistakes, but he also won us about 4 or 5 games by himself.

I'd like to think...

that Hinrich is worth more than just cap relief. I realize that Jack has some value, but again I’d really hope that we could get more than that.

If not – I’d probably do that deal, or some variant of it.

You don't trade Hinrich

because he is suited to be a good sixth man, and he is insurance in case Rose what everybody thinks he is. Plus, Jarrett Jack, are you kidding me?

2008 or bust.

You don’t keep Hinrich as Rose-bust insurance.

I’m not allowed to say, “Trade him while can,” again. So I won’t.

Why not?

Or at least as a back-up?

Although being able to take roughly $20 mill off the books after next season between LaFrentz and Gooden is quite enticing. Both for trading this season or signing a new one.

Why not--because he's too valuable in a trade.

And too un-valuable sitting on the Bulls bench.

How does this trade make us better?

This trade just lowers our overall talent level. At this point all deals that the bulls make should be bringing us closer to a championship.

It removes the liability of Hinrich's contract

Which has some value in and of itself; with Reinsdorf’s unwillingness to move into luxury tax territory, this provides more flexibility in future years. Hell, if we had one less big contract (i.e. Hinrich, Nocioni) we would have gotten Gasol at the trading deadline this year.

Plus, only 3 guards on a team can play 25+ minutes per night; if we draft Rose, we’ll have FIVE who need to play that much for one reason or another – Rose, Hinrich, Gordon, Hughes, Sefolosha. That means that TWO of those five would have to go. If you buy out Hughes (that’s one), what’s the real difference between Jack or Hinrich as a 10-15 mpg backup and fourth guard? The point is, two of these guys simply have to go if we bring in Rose.

As I note above, I’d like to think we could get more than this for Hinrich, but if not I’d go ahead and do something like this proposed deal.

Of those 5 guards

Only Hinrich should play the point. If it’s coming to down to Rose or Hinrich, Kirk will be captaining from the bench come season start.

I'd also like to add

that Hughes should be used exclusively as a very expensive towel waver. Leaving Gordon, Thabo, and maybe even a little Kirk sliding over alternating at the 2.

It’s really not that hard to squeeze Rose in there.
