Jose Calderon
Calderon Wants To Start
Jose Calderon | Raptors
All year long, Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon insisted whether he started
or not did not matter. With T.J. Ford in and out of Toronto's lineup at point guard, and
struggling in a reserve role, it was the media-friendly line to take.
With the season over, however, and restricted free agency pending, Calderon has
changed his tone.
"I want to be a starter and [on] a team that aspires for everything," Calderon said
on his Web site (www.josemanuelcalderon.com). -- The National Post
Bryan Colangelo said he has yet to have any serious contract discussions with
Calderon's agents and he hasn't reached out to Ford to see if the issue can be
resolved.
"I've always said I found it a positive that T.J. felt he was a starter in the NBA,"
Colangelo said yesterday. "Jose has obviously displayed he's capable of having
that attitude as well as being willing to make sacrifices." -- Toronto Star
Calderon does not want to return to Toronto unless he is guranteed to start, so maybe the Bulls could try to get him. I think Calderon would be a great pickup and would help out the team even if we don't get D'Antoni and would fit great in D'Antoni's system if we do get him.

Interersting that Calderon leaves out an important detail
“I want to be a starter and [on] a team that aspires for everything,”
A team, but he doesn’t say “the Toronto Raptors”.

The horses mouth
What is clear is the fact that if I have to choose between a sports offer versus an economic offer, I will opt for the first. I want to be a starter and to be in a team that aspires for everything. Of course I will not be on a team in which I cannot be an important contributor nor if there is not a solid structure or if there are not options to be in the "Playoffs".

Calderon is good and the Raptors know it
Still seems more likely that they try to get rid of TJ Ford.

either way
I don’t think it would be a bad idea for the Bulls to be pursuing either of the Raptors’ PGs. They both have exceptional PPRs and are better offensive PGs than Kirk, how much we would lose on the defensive end is a concern, but I still think either of them is a net upgrade. I second Matt’s notion that we should only be interested in Ford if it’s to unload a bad contract (like Noce), especially given his neck and spinal issues. How much would people be willing to give up to get Calderon?

Trade?
I doubt they are gonna let calderon go but if worst comes to worst, a number 9 pick and luol deng doesnt seem like a bad compensation.

I wouldn't...
trade Deng for him. Maybe Gordon.

I would love to see the Bulls get Calderon, but not for Deng.
He has the highest upside offensive potential on the team and would thrive with a true point guard like Calderon running the offense. If Toronto would bite, I would offer some attractive package to pry him from the Raptors.
I previously stated the Bulls should make Jose an offer he can’t refuse and Toronto can’t match. The Raptors already have T J Ford and might be more interested in acquiring a shooting guard like Gordon and a hustle player like Noce or maybe Gordon and our first draft pick. Jose is a legitimate 26 yr. old point guard who thinks pass first (8.3 assists/30 minutes per game). He can start or come off the bench and be highly effective (52% FG, 43% 3PT, 91% FT). and is a decent help defender and a definte upgrade from Gordon in this area and the Bulls can almost guarantee him a starting position.
And think how exciting they could be next year under D’Antoni’s uptempo offense with him running it. Oh wait, I forgot, D’Antoni is coaching the Knicks. In any case, the Bulls better find someone who can ignite this offense that was last in FG % this season.
The question remains. Why would the Raptors want to give him up?
If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

They can't afford him?
or an trade offer presents itself they just can’t refuse.
Calderon seems to have plenty of opps to say he wants to the the starting point guard for the Raptors yet he continues to dodge saying this.

I don't know what trades would make them ship him off
They have a pressing need for rebounding and strength inside, but I don’t see many candidates out there who are worth Calderon’s value because he’s 27 and looks like a top 5 PG when he starts. If Calderon is privately questioning whether Toronto is a good fit, I would jump for the opportunity to grab him. Then again, what’s to say those fatcats in NYC won’t fleece him as well?

Maybe the Bulls can hire a private detective who can snap some incriminating pictures.

Do It
I’ve been pushing for Calderon for months. I think that the Raptors will try to move him in the off-season. You don’t need two big contract point guards and they seems to like TJ Ford. I’m entirely for it. Trade Deng and something (Tyrus, 9th pick). Done and done. Good post, I was waiting to put it up myself.

The team plays better with Calderon as the starter
At least they did this season. TJ Ford is causing problems because he doesn’t want to platoon the position, I would think they would be more inclined to ship him out

They would rather trade Ford than Calderon, but
they probably can’t get much for Ford, because of his injury history, and the risk that he could be done for his career if he got hurt again. Most teams won’t want to touch that, or at least won’t want to give up much for him.
Plus, Calderon’s value is really high right now, so maybe they’ll capitalize on that. He’s good, but probably not as good people are making him out to be after 1 good season. I know he was good before last season, but a good example would be that his value was much lower than Kirk’s a year ago, and they’re the same age. Now after a good season for Calderon and a bad one for Kirk, Calderon’s value is way higher. The actual diffence between them probably isn’t much. If they can find a decent back up for Ford, they might want to see what value they can get for Calderon.

According to PER I guess
but he only played 23 and 21 minutes per game before last year. I think he’s a nice point guard, but his value is high right now, and they have another good point guard who they’re paying decent money, so it makes sense for them to see what they can get for him. He’s also played in a good system for point guards with one of the best bigs in the league to run the pick & roll with and some really good shooters to space the floor. That has helped to make him look pretty good. Don’t get me wrong, I do like him though

Calderon would be damn good in Chicago
I’d love to see him put the ball in perfect position for Deng and Gordon, running the pick and roll with Noah and Thomas. I also would love a head coach for the team, but I don’t think either is happening anytime soon.

Calderon's nice
but priority one for the bulls roster is get a big who can score. Calderon is a great point guard, but he has Chris Bosh. Steve Nash has always had Amare. We need a scoring big to build around. And no – Noah is not that guy.
