Sam Smith's Mailbag Moves Into New Home
His new mailbag home is the Sporting News.

It appears Mike D'Antoni is leaving Phoenix.
Did anyone, by the way, tell him what the weather is like in Toronto, Chicago and New York, speculated to be among D'Antoni's preferred destinations. Perhaps he isn't as smart as I thought.
But don't say goodbye to the Phoenix Suns so quickly.
They're not nearly as far behind the San Antonio Spurs as their 4-1 first round defeat suggests with still another meltdown against their Western Conference nemesis.

Sweet!
I’ll miss it being all Bulls, though.
My Bulls may suck, but my Jayhawks are National Champs!
Actually, his
“Ask the Expert” column on MSNBC.com used to be all-NBA, and come to think of it, a lot of his “Ask Sam Smith” Trib column fielded questions on non-Bulls players/coaches/etc., too.
But I like to think that his reputation is solidified as a Bulls guy first and foremost, not only because of his professional history and The Jordan Rules, but also because he openly professes his affection for the current Bulls roster and Kirk Hinrich in particular.
Whatever the case, the basketball fan in me remains impressed, and at times, smitten by his expansive basketball knowledge…

More from Sam, heard on the Tony Kornheiser Radio Show
-Carlisle’s not a real candidate for the job
-Avery Johnson might get a look but probably not the job
-Bulls want to wait to speak with Tom Thibadeau
-This whole thing could take months to resolve

i wouldn't argue any of that except the last point
I would think that they would want to have a coach in place maybe by the lottery…definitely by the draft. It doesn’t look good to draft players and have no coach and/or system in place.
Sam’s opinion from the get-go
has been that this time around Paxson wants to fit the coach to the players rather than the players to the coach—which Sam believes Paxson did with Skiles, which limited the roster’s effectiveness at adapting to a new coach when he was forced to part ways with Skiles.

Sam's also said
that Paxson has literally no idea who he wants to hire :-/

Well, the draft is June 26, which is a week after the latest ending point for the Finals
So, if Boston were in the Finals and it went 7 and Paxson really wanted to wait for Thibadeau, that’s not out of the realm of possibility that it’d be almost 2 months from now before a coach was hired.

Typical.
Reinsdorf must be rubbing his little paws together thinking about how much money he can save by hiring an assistant rather than an established head coach.

P.S. Why is Thibadeau so highly regarded?
What, exactly, has he done?

what does any coach do?
Celtics are the top defense in the league. Before that he was with Houston and they were top-6 each of the 4 seasons. I think before that he was with JVG with the Knicks.
Plus people in the know say nice things about him.
Not sure what there really is to go on when evaluating assistant coaches.

People in the know...
So I take it you’re referring to NBA Observer?

Wow. That's what I get for not including an

Here are some to make up for it: :P :) :|

I wonder how this group of Bulls will respond to
a man with no head coaching experience?
I wonder if they will “respect” him or heed his advice.
Of course, if he is coming off of a Finals appearance, that would probably help.

Why does everyone think this team is such a group of malcontents?
Yes, they were that this past year, so it needs to be taken into consideration, but other than that (which, I would have tuned out NoBrainBoylan as well), what have they shown that they need a resume to give respect to a coach?
I could go into a lot of reasons why I think that’s about as opposite from the truth as could be, but it’s only speculation. Even off evidence, though, they have a better history of doing what the coach says then being lazy bastards.

I think the media is to blame
Im sure at some point the media got tired of the blue collared good citizen, nothing really happens here attitude of our bulls. I mean this group says all the right things, they play hard every game so this year the media took advantage of every thing. Players were late?? Thats news!!! Of course at some point that doesnt cut it, cuz i mean who isnt tardy once in a while. So the perfect flaw was the mental weakness of the team…and by golly its been pushed to the extreme.
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.
Well, apparently they quit on two coaches in
one season.
LSU 38 OHIO STATE 24 - LSU IS THE NATIONAL CHAMPION AND I AM THE KING OF BOURBON STREET!!
I would have quit on Boylan, too.
I think the fact that this particular group of players quit on him pretty much shows that ANY group of players would have quit on him. Maybe I wouldn’t have quit on Skiles, but I’m not convinced every player did quit on him. I’m not convinced.

agree, agree, agree, yes!
some, including the above fantastic four, saw this unfolding in late december 2007. Yet, the current GM, didn’t ? or was he just buying time planning a strategy for the off season by selecting placeholder Boylan?
He (Paxson) now has been quoted recently as not having any idea or what type of coach he should select?
In Pax we Lacks ..... direction and vision.
So...
Does this mean that with the Chi Tribune cuts he was one of them and he’s completely out?
Finally: The End.
He is done
at the Trib. He has a once a week gig with CSN’s CTL and you can also email him questions on CSN’s web site.
He wasnt cut btw
He was bought out, some of the veteran guys at the trib got bought out of the contract.
