Pax to interview Mark Jackson, still doesn't have a plan
[From the FanShots -ed.]
Proving yet again his open-mindedness to a coach search that is nothing but open-ended, Bulls general manager John Paxson is scheduled to interview former NBA point guard Mark Jackson this week.
KC says "open-minded, " I say "needing a plan." I'm starting to get on board with Matt's concerns.

Time passed.

and Pax read Mark Jackson's name in the press
and said something along the lines of “who’s this guy I keep hearing about?. Oh I hope he blows me away with a coaching strategy, as I have no idea what to expect from any candidate.”
Then he could be heard mumbling 'evaluating...accountability' before arranging someone to taste his food.
Actually, I think Pax does want to wait for a ‘superstar’ (ha!) coach to get fired, and/or having assistants available to interview. I just wish he didn’t sound (or take actions to look) so clueless, it doesn’t inspire confidence.

Avery Johnson
doesn’t do anything for me. Is he an innovator? a communicator? a great in-game strategist? He just seems like a guy who inherited an already good team and is presiding over its demise.

well, his GM is helping
with the Kidd trade and insisting on filling the bench with ‘championship’ role players (i.e. guys who can’t play anymore)
If Pax fails to make a major move with the roster he’s stuck with needing the coach to be the leader of the team. At least Avery wouldn’t hesitate to do that.

Fine. I'm convinced.
Just make the tiniest good argument and I’ll jump at it. Avery Johnson. Good leader. Great. I’m all for the guy.

you set the bar low
you said he didn’t do “anything” for you. I gave you “something”. Not sure that’s enough.
I have no list of top candidates. I guess I just say no to Mark Jackson. Casual top of ‘possibles’ is Karl and D’Antoni. And generally I’d rather not take a risk and instead hire Avery or JVG. Just don’t hire someone who will continue to get in his own way and screw everything up. Paxson may play it safe too, you only get so many coaching hires.

oh, and get used to it
there’s no real news, so just go away for a few weeks if it bothers you that little morsels of info get over-analyzed.

Delay is OK
Although I don’t love Mark Jackson, there’s no reason to rush this process if Pax is interested in Thibodeau, Avery or D’antoni. I do appreciate how KC mentioned Tyrone Corbin’s name three days after Sam Smith floated it on North’s show. Does this guy do any original reporting?
I don’t know what Pax’s plan is, but I’m happy that he just didn’t rush out and sign Carlisle w/o doing due diligence on all potential candidates. I agree with an earlier post from Matt that he should have started to compile a list once Skiles was fired, but even that list wouldn’t have had Johnson or D’antoni on it as their teams’ respective falls have been largely unexpected.

so does this mean
that Pippen will get an interview? What’s the difference between Pip and Jackson?...other than one has a “hot” name right now…for no real reason.

I really don't know how Marc Jackson's name
has even entered the NBA head coaching vacancy discussion league wide. Does he have a good agent?

uh, he's on national TV every week
plus broadcasts locally in New York. And we all know how smart analysts can look on the broadcasts. Hey John Paxson!

Funny you mention that
because I wasn’t all that impressed with Rick Carlisle or Mike Dunleavy’s in game analysis.

if Marc Jackson's agent was as good as Mark Jackson's agent...
Well, the Glassies would have worked out a lot differently.

I want Thibodeau as the bulls coach.,.Nothing is wrong with taking your time.

Come on Pax...you're better than that
I would like to see the Knicks being re-built with a GM and coach who have absolutely no experience in either forum. I think he’s just playing his cards, and covering every possible option. With the resignation of Riley, I think Van Gundy is going get a very nice look down there in Miami, so hopefully we can dodge that bullet.

Mark Jackson sucks
If they do hire him, I’ll have to totally agree with Mariotti for once.
Jerry is lame to not wanna pay for a real coach!

you mean two coaches
Anybody have a chummy email relationship with the beat writers? Nobody’s sure on whether they’re still paying Skiles. (ask about Noah’s shoulder too)

Paxson is doing the right thing!
He should interview everyone and pick their brains to get thoughts on how to improve this team. I’d want to know as many opinions as possible on what others see as wrong with our team and how they would fix it. Our disastrous season is partly personnel, partly in the players head and partly a lack of a coherent basketball scheme that works for this team. What went wrong this year are many factors, some not easily understood. I’d want as many opinions and assess as many peoople before making the most important decision of the off-season, deciding on the coach. Good going PAX!

The Mark Jackson Merry-Go-Round
Pete Vecsey, a man who mocked Jackson during his time in New York, christening him “Trade Mark,” has suddenly gone soft on him. He recently wrote an article saying that the fact that Jackson has no previous coaching experience is no big deal, citing his “knowledge and communication of the game spoke for itself as one of the game’s all-time assists artists, something the TV audience became privy to when he became a broadcaster for the YES Network.”
What baffles me is this emphasis about Jackson abilities as a color analyst. While admitting that Jackson is “extremely self possessed, he knows the game, can teach it articulately (or in some graphic terms if necessary) and will be demanding.” Explain to me what separates Jackson from, say Kenny Smith? The former Tar Heel, who entered the NBA via the same 1987 NBA draft as Jackson, is just as knowledgeable as “Trade Mark.”
All these analysts know the game because they’ve been around it all their lives. If they couldn’t articulate it, they would have been sent packing. Knowledge of the game from an analyst’s seat? Big deal!
I always get suspicious when a clean slate rounds up the usual suspects as they begin a full-court press. His former coach, Rick Pitino, whose opinion you should take with a grain of salt, compares Jackson to Pat Riley. Are you kidding me? “He prepares like Riley. Mark is one of the few guys who could be a head coach right away because of how bright and thorough he is.” Really? On the basis of what? Your word, Slick Rick? Talk about a snake oil salesman.
His old coach at St. John’s Lou Carnesecca chimed in, “He’s always known how to handle people. He demanded the respect of the players and they all loved him.”
Reflecting on his love affair with Jackson which goes back to his rookie year, Pitino said, “When Mark was drafted he was the darling of New York. When he got to the Knicks, I told him he was going to take us to the Promised Land.” The Knicks are still waiting to get there.
After all that selling, Knicks President Donnie Walsh isn’t biting. He probably feels the sell is too well put together. Good for him! Maybe Pax will be the sucker to take the bait.
If this guy was a can’t miss, Walsh would have gobbled him up in a second. After beating around the bush, Walsh gave him an interview last Thursday. Why all the caution on the part of the Knicks? I would have thought that he aced it. Maybe he didn’t? I think Walsh knows this guy better than Jackson and his backers think.
This guy doesn’t want to coach anywhere else but New York, because he knows that his honeymoon will be a long one. I am puzzled by Pax’s thinking. Is he trying to help Jackson drive up his price?

Paxson wants Thibodeau
Walsh is interested in him as well.
Paxson then asks Jackson for an interview, hoping that Walsh will “panick” and hire Jackson (his second choice) now for fear of losing him.
Of course take all this with a big grain of salt, it is highly speculative on my part :-)
The Game chose him !

George Karl the next candidate?
I wonder how he will do a team that isn’t stacked with talent. Seattle, Milwaukee, and obviously Denver have had some serious All-Star talent. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t part ways with the Nuggets, and if Paxson is going to talk to Mark Jackson, he should interview Karl as well.

Rex Chapman
doesn’t sound like he’s panicking:
“He’s our coach…“
But he’s not exactly giving a vote of confidence either:
“But I think we all should be evaluated in the offseason,” Nuggets vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman said. “This is the second year in a row this same crew has come up short. Everybody needs to look in the mirror.”...”It can stay the same if your goal is to win 50 games. But I don’t think that’s the goal. The goal is to win a championship,” Chapman said.
This article suggests the team has tuned Karl out – http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_9090053
