Even though i dont think you're that good (Duh appreciation thread)

I respect you as a player. One of the most hated Bulls players here on Bab has taken a step back.  With all the criticism considering his playing time, partying ways, and horrible shot he is a good teammate!!!  He realizes his time is probably up for 2008 and knows he won't be on the team next year ,he still is ready if called upon.  Thank you Chirs Duhon!!  My favorite Chicago Bulls Chris Duhon moment is those 34 magical points you put up on national TV against the Warriors.  Somehow managing an invitation to the All Star game as a shooting star???  What is going on here??  Who runs this league??  Anyways, this diary is for Chris Duhon no other guard talk!!

duhon
victim of circumstance...just like many others on the team. I have always been a fan and hopefully this won't turn into a debate over how good or bad duhon is. I don't think anyone would claim he is a shooting superstar or a top level PG but he is a great role player on a team with too many of them.  Maybe the spurs get him next year. Stoudemire's contract runs out right?  That be a nice fit.

by Sambossanova on Feb 27, 2008 6:43 AM CST reply actions

Du!
It's too bad the Bulls couldn't figure out a way to send him off for a pick or something to a team that can actually use him heading down the stretch. We obviously can't (and had a hard time doing it most of this year and last), but I agree that he could really help a team with plenty of scorers and a need for a solid backup PG. He'd make plenty of sense for a team like Denver, New Orleans or Boston.

I honestly wouldn't be upset if the Bulls simply released him. He's one of the guys who's actually been a leader here, both on and off the court, and I'd much rather see us "do right by him" than by a slug like Khyrapa.

Ouch
Why the hate on Khryapa?  A "slug"?

Mostly
It comes from the fact that on the rare occasions he got on the court I saw him routinely:
  1. Jacked up a shot as soon as his hands touched the ball
  2. Routinely shook his head in disgust if a teammate passed him up and gave the ball to another guy (even if he was open and scored).
Maybe the guy was done wrong by the Bulls, maybe that partly excuses it, but I still don't have much sympathy for it.

What's the off-court leadership...
...Duhon's provided?

Off-court leadership
He's the only guy of note on this team who I've never heard a self-serving sounding quote from (Noc doesn't count since "ME CRUSH OPPONENT FACE!!!" is hard to categorize either way).  His quotes are always what I'd expect a leader to say.

On the sidelines and in games he's typically cheering on his mates and active.

Off court the guy's raised a fortune to rebuild his home town after Katrina.

I'll take that kind of stuff every day of the week.

by Sports2 on Feb 27, 2008 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

He also said...
...if you didn't like Skiles, you won't like Boylan.  What's that about? He also routinely goes out partying and occasionally shows up late to shoot-arounds the next day. How's that for leading by example? Three years in??? Great leader alright.

Oh, and I have a friend in the Peace Corps. But she sucks at basketball.

as much as i complained about du
he is a good guy.  he is a serviceable backup pg, but i never thought he was the right fit for our team since somehow we gained a huge reliance on him, which wasn't a good sign since that's all he is - a backup.

however, i definitely wish him luck wherever he ends up.

Duhon gave me change for a dollar
I needed 15 cents to get to the minimum fare on the CTA and I didn't want to put extra on cause I was gonna be out of town, and you always lose those cards. So I need change and who walks through the turnstile, but Chris Duhon.

"Hey Du, great game last night!"

"We didn't play last night."

"Hey, great. Listen, you got change for a dollar?"

"Are you serious? I'm in the NBA. Don't you want to know about the glamorous side of the game? Playing basketball in Charlotte? Talking about feelings with Kirk? Picking food out of Gooden's beard?"

"Yo, Shootsy McDribblesalot, I gotta train to make. You got change or not?"

So he fishes through his pockets and comes up with  1 quarter, 4 dimes and 7 nickels and I gave him my dollar.

"Hey, don't spend that all in one place," I say. "Just joking. Thanks a lot, good luck tonight!"

"We don't have a game tonight."

"Yeah, I think you'll do great too. Take er easy."

Yeah, that Chris Duhon, he's a great guy.

Du's the man
Though he has his flaws on and off the court (mainly that he's a Dukie), he definitely played hard every possession and nobody seems to give him much credit for all the injuries the guy played through.  Props to Du and I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.  There are a lot of teams that could use a capable backup pg.

by Coach Van Lier on Feb 27, 2008 9:09 AM CST reply actions

New Orleans
Go home Duhon.  He can backup Chris Paul in New Orleans.  I think Duhon likes city life though.

i like that idea
N.O. could use him.  He'd be back with Tyson too.  Maybe they could re-hash old Skiles war stories and talk about how it feels to have a Grade A point guard instead of a Grade D guard in the wimpy iowa kid

from the last game he wasn't brought in.  so i'd say it has to be significant...

Still though
Wouldn't count Duh making his way back somehow.

Like even mentioned in the article, he always somehow finds a way back in even when you least expect it.

Duhon's next stop
Duhon's good. The Little Engine That Could reputation of the Bulls the last few seasons was partially his doing, and I mean that in a good way. Whenever you count him out, there he is, sinking a key three or actually driving to the hole when the rest of the guards were allergic.

What he needs is a team that needs a pass-first PG, most likely on the second unit. He can lull the other team's second unit to sleep as they consider him not worthy of guarding, and then convert driving to the hole or even (inhale) shoot a 3.

Boston, Cleveland, Indiana, Minnesota, New Jersey and Miami come to mind. Best case scenario for Duhon would be Boston. Worst case? Probably New Jersey.

by bullhockey on Feb 27, 2008 11:08 AM CST reply actions

Jersey still has
Devin Harris and Marcus Williams (although they may trade the latter).

No teams in the West could use him?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 27, 2008 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

I suppose Seattle could, but
they're in major tank mode. My thought is, why would they upgrade (even if it's just Duhon) when they're all about shedding salary and maximizing their chances at higher draft picks. Instead of getting Du, they could have any old stiff fill a PG spot if needed (insert Duhon joke here).

Utah has Jason Hart as backup PG, whom Duhon compares favorably with (about two more assists per 24 min). And same with Kidd in Dallas, who has Jose Juan Barea, but they can always have Jason Terry switch over if Kidd gets hurt/fouls out.

Sacramento has Beno Udrih starting, and Duhon's assists seem to be better, but then Sacramento also has Anthony Johnson as their backup, and that's a guy who has put up some pretty solid numbers in the past.

Minnesota has Telfair starting, so there may be an opening there. But then it seems like a lot of commentators have anointed backup PG Randy Foye a future star willing to take a last shot, as his game-winner over the Bulls last season shows.

If the Clippers buy out Cassell, then they'll have an opening theoretically, since they should prefer Du over Dickau.

hesitation duhon
hes·i·ta·tion  [hez-i-tey-shuhn]
 1. the act of hesitating; a delay due to uncertainty of mind or fear: His hesitation cost him the championship.

time and time again...

I thought he got over this! He is best when he recieves the ball with space and pops one. Not spazzing out and giving it up to a big with 4 sec left on the shot clock! Be a man and grow a beard already baby du!

You missed the obvious one
where his lack of shooting would be essential: Denver.
Baby Bulls II?

by bullshooter on Feb 27, 2008 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

Denver probably would be a good fit..
considering I don't remember them really having a backup point guard.

by Jaina on Feb 27, 2008 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

Good point. Anthony Carter
is backed up by Taurean Green for now, but only because Chucky Atkins has been injured for a while.

I could see them parting with Chucky because he's been injured so much, but I believe his next year is guaranteed. Plus, he was averaging 13 ppg and 4 apg, and shot 37% from 3-point range, which definitely sets him apart from Duhon.

Plus, as with Jason Terry in Dallas, Allen Iverson can play PG really, really well. If I remember correctly he was top 5 in the league in assists in one or two of his final seasons with Philly when playing PG.

My favorite
Duhon moment: at the beginning of the season, somewhere around the 2-10 point, Duhon said in an interview that if you think you're a fifty million dollar man, go out and play like one. That WAS leadership. It had no impact on the terrible play of BG and Lu, but I understand now why he wanted to be a captain.

by BigBenign on Feb 27, 2008 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Sheer Terror
After watching the "pure" point guard play of BG, KH, LH, TS, I realized that none of them is able to break down a defense, set up the offense, make smart choices on a break, or even play effective full court defense (You must do all four!) This means that unfortunately our best "pure" point guard is at best a decent backup who we don't have room for, sad.

Duhon...
you're the only bull that stopped to give me an autograph.  You've done right by me. (at least off the court)  If the NBA doesn't work out for you, strippers can make a decent wage :)
And the starting line up for your world champion Chicago Bulls. . .

by AGBallinisaHabit on Feb 28, 2008 12:53 AM CST reply actions

Du Du Du
Despite what I post on my own website, I will concede that Duhon is probably a nice guy who knows a lot about basketball.  Unfortunately, those things do not translate to basketball ability.  Duhon is a starting PG in an international league, or a backup PG on a good team that does not need ANY scoring / shooting skill or size from its back up point guard.  Maybe the Celtics or Spurs would be good for him, but remember that he'd be playing on the second units with those teams.  So, Duhon would likely be running the floor with Leon Powe and crew.
