Open Game Thread #56 Bulls at Dallas Mavericks
[UPDATE: You can find my post-game comments here. -Matt]
[Thanks to joemoses for tonight's game thread. -Matt]
Finally, we can play against Jason Kidd with a little height. Thabo and Hughes hopefully will chase Kidd all night. That only leaves us the problem of Josh Howard. Noah should give Dirk a lot of trouble (which should be the matchup, but probably won't. He'll probably be on the larger Dampier). Tyrus has been playing great lately, lets see him get up to 30 minutes. The more Gooden and Hughes play with the team, the better they should blend in. Everybody's healthy enough to play.
Bulls have lost 17 of 19 to the Mavs. They are 23-3 at home this year.

I thought on Kirk's play
Dallas has benefitted with home court calls on all the questionable out of bounds deflections, and has a few key threes, but don't look good to me. Credit Bull defense or Kidd not acclimated yet? Game should be tied.
I hate being reminded constant now why I hated Drew Gooden's "game". Let's NOT see Du. And where's Noah been? Tyrus on Howard ('tho Deng did fine), Noah on Dirk, Gray or Gooden on Dampier/Lambier (LOL, bullish!). And with Kirk out, (surely even Boylan can figure it out now) Thabo checks Kidd.

once again
I'll have to check the gameflow tomorrow but I think Gooden was something like 3-11 until the 4th period. Hughes finished 4-11, but I do give him some cred for getting 5 FTAs.
I don't get some of the Luol hate tonight, I thought he played pretty well, especially on the boards.
If Noah only received 18 minutes because he was hurt, fine. If it was because of 'matchups', Boylan's an idiot. Noah's the type to play center in a small lineup, you overmatched goof.
At least Duhon (and Gray) didn't play. That's a good first step towards a rotation. Next one: figure out how to get the better guys out there more often.
How about Ben Gordon, jerks? 0 TOs in 37 minutes, and that was playing PG most of his time out there . Ok, he did have that bizarre dribble out the shot-clock posession, which should be his TO.
(I take back the 'jerks' comment, we shouldn't be adversarial over Gordon. I'll just suggest to look at how much better he is than Larry Hughes, and realize how all 'scorers' aren't created equal)
Speaking of, it was almost a blessing that Hinrich was ejected, he had 3 lazy turnovers in his first stint, blech. Tough to climb uphill all game like that.

Another frustrating loss
Maybe Tyrus can develop into one, but until hes dropping near 30 a night, Bulls need to play near perfect team basketball to win games against good teams. So far, inconsistency rules supreme as they can't win 2 games in a row to save their lives.

28 and too many
Remember the first few minutes? He couldn't stop Dirk no matter how he tried. He fouled him right away, then Dirk hit a jumper in front of him, then TT wanted to go for revenge -and Dirk mercilessly blocked him. That was Tyrus last night.
Look. he's a kid, he's got time and he might get better (Might). But he's no savior right now. Hate Boylan all you want but if you really believe TT is going to save the sinking ship right now you're in for a bitter wakeup call.

I don't think hes going to save the ship, but....
by Coach Van Lier on Feb 26, 2008 8:43 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
How about last night?
As for the young'uns, The "people's starters" lost the game in the first 6 or 7 minutes. It was a 22-6 Mavs start.
Kirk forgetting the ball. TT chasing Dirk -and getting burned over and over. Luol doing... er... did he do anything at all?
Giving the kids the most minutes, at this point, would be tanking. Intentional or not.

We didn't make this trade to get the young guys
If that is the case, then why did Paxson EXPLICITLY state that the trade was executed, in part, because he wanted to get Tyrus and Noah on the court?
I guess he was lying.
Your argument that Tyrus had too many minutes last night is completely unfounded. He had the second best +/- rating of any Bull, I believe.
by 1958ChiTown on Feb 26, 2008 9:45 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He was a better option than Nocioni
Anybody notice the stretches with Tyrus was in with Noc, that Tyrus was out on the wing guarding Stackhouse and Howard while Noc had Bass (and Deavean George I believe)? I'm sure Boylan was stratching his skull wondering why Tyrus couldn't simultaneously guard wing players and yet also be close to the basket

Boylan just doesn't get it
Trading out two bigs logging a lot of minutes and bringing back one big was a trade explicitly to get Noah and Thomas as much PT as possible. Paxson is on this trip. Anyone think he's getting the message?
Can't really say I miss Kirk. In a shade over 11 minutes he had 3 turnovers.

Kirk IS the man now
Kirs at least cares about losing. He is out of control sometimes but he brings a god deal of toughness and energy. Who else? BG? He's even more selfish and would gladly watch the team going down as long as he makes his money. Luol? He's got talent but he can't lead a HS team. We should know that by now. TT? Poor kid, the overbloated expectations are going to crush him. Plus I doubt he's got his fundamentals solid enough. Noce? Don't make me laugh.
Kirk may not be the leader we want but he's the closest to the job we have now.

On the one hand, Paxson and Boylan state that the goal of the franchise is to make the playoffs.
On the other hand, Boylan is acting as if we are in game three of the season and he has time to experiment with trash lineups.
There are 26 games left in the season and the Bulls are 12 games under five hundred. What am I missing? Now is not the time to "throw stuff against the wall."

Last night's game was
1 slowly dribbles up. Find 2 or 3 coming off baseline screen. Elevate for shot before passing it at last second, for a turnover. Or reverse ball or find cutter cross court, for a turnover.
What about pick-and-rolls, iso's and interior passing? It seems like the Bulls need to just stop the plague of the lateral, perimater passing. And scrap Skiles' play book if it says otherwise.

Well I guess I'm just wondering
Plus, isn't Hughes supposed to be a slasher? Clear out and let the man slash once in a while. Have him go to the rim and at the very least draw a foul.
I was under the impression that the Bulls avoided this play because they didn't have a big guard who could finish those types of plays, and their small guards weren't getting the calls because they were, well, small.
by bullhockey on Feb 26, 2008 11:22 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
The black hole offense
I watch my Bulls and it appears that there is almost no strategy at all. There's no signs of basketball IQ. Does anyone know their personnel? Do they spot mismatches? When they see the mismatch can they get the ball into the post?
You watch the Mavs and you see how their offense is run explicitly to get mismatches. That's the entire offense except for finding Josh Howard or Stackhouse to shoot it from anywhere. Dirk needs a PG like Malone needed a PG.
Dirk's a superstar, but he gets away with illegal screens 4 out of 5 times. He leans on the guard when he's setting a screen with his hands. A foul in the NBA rulebook, but a no call in real-time.
Maybe the team needs chapperones off the court. I'd convert them all to Latter Day Saints if that meant no partying when you're 12 games under .500.
by NBA Observer on Feb 26, 2008 12:40 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The Mavs
If we had a guy like Dirk on our squad (we don't by a long shot, and few teams do) we could try to run mismatches.
Reall Dallas is run by having 1 or 2 spot up shooters, a little offense Center and Dirk moving the ball and controlling the offense.
Having Jason Kidd makes them ever the more deadly because Kidd can make a guy like Joakim Noah look like an offensive threat with Kidd's ability to see through holes, anticipate defenders next move, make sharp, crisp, perfect, extreme difficult passes seem easy, and he also gets you 7-10 defensive boards a night that help him see the court from the entire court....he's just a special player.
If we had a Dirk on our team, we could have no strategy but make it look like a strategy.
Lately with Boylan (much as I dislike him for his substitution patters) you can tell that he's at least got the guys moving around. Our guys played 4 years in the drive and kick Skiles offense....this year for whatever reason we forgot or were no longer able to do our drive and kick game, and we had for a long time there a bounce the ball and let the clock tick down then force a prayer and hope to get fouled mindset.....
I think Boylan's at least got the guys moving around. Maybe having the uber athletic Tyrus and THabo out there helps with this, but it seems we're at least trying to change our old style....
These things take time, especially when you incorporate really 5 new guys into the rotation (Gooden, Hughes, and for all intents and purposes given more minutes to Thomas, THabo, and Noah)....
I do think Boylan is an issue as his sub patterns can be really bad (heck our announcers were like, "Um I guess he wants to give Gordon a break here for the 3 minute stretch run, not really sure why since it seems now is the time we need his scoring"....
I also think a more seasoned pro with a new offense could really fix this club. We have a gluttony of talented guards, and now seem to have a nice mix of young bigs. Getting a Nellie or Phil type coach is tough, but there are some out there. Boylan's "Skiles Light" mentality isn't good enough if we want to compete.

1958chitown
Gooden is a GOOD PASSER. He makes very good passes out of the post FREQUENTLY, but if the double-team doesnt come than the right play is to SCORE. WHICH HE DID, and right when Dallas was cheating towards a double-team on the 4th stright post-up Gooden made a nice move for the take but it rimmed out, and we didnt go to him again.
So we havent seen it yet, I have Leaguepass (YOU OBVIOULSY DONT), Gooden is a very good passer. His first year in Cleveland he was utilized correctly and he averaged 15 and 10 a night for a playoff team at 23 years old. He hasnt been utilized correctly this year, if he is used right here than he and we will THRIVE with him giving us the lowpost dimension as our 3rd option.
Wanna talk about a blakc hole? NOW KEVIN MCHALE: THAT WAS ONE SERIOUS BLACK HOLE! What a bum he was, huh?
AND SKY: I agree with you, the Kids got good minutes, the minutes they should get, and it wasnt the purpose of the trade. It was a factor, a secondary purpose, if you will.
I basically agree with EVERYTHING YOU SAID, Sky.
by Deng is the next Bull superstar on Feb 26, 2008 2:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
comprehension?
1958 wasn't arguing that Gooden was a bad passer. He was saying he wasn't passing.
You don't have to pass just because a double team is coming. You don't have to wait for a double team to pass the ball. You can pass out, reposition yourself deeper in the post, and call for the ball back.
Drew Gooden is no Zach Randolph though. Zachary Boseph Randolph is THE black hole of the NBA.

by tyrus4prez on Feb 26, 2008 3:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
and this
And he is a FAR FAR FAR different player than Zach Randolph. More athletic, more size, not quite as good moves in the lowpost on offense, much better passer from inside or high-post, much more willing passer, much better running the floor, better on the pick and roll (MUCH BETTER HANDS, and alot more athletic to finish, sets better picks too), not as good range on his jumper as Zach, Zach has a better work ethic (Scottie Pippen said that Zach Randolph worked harder than any player he's ever played with except Jordan...), Drew is MUCH BETTER on defense man-to-man, and Drew is an average help defender where-as Zach is a bad help defender.
And many more differences, etcetera.

It's been easy to see the good and bad with Gooden. The solution, as always, is play him less. Judging by his career, eventually the bad outweighs the good if you keep him out there too long. Doesn't mean he's not a good frontcourt rotation player for the 1 year he'll be around.

Let Tyrus guard Dirk. Dirk will score, but keeping Tyrus on Dirk will help Tyrus develop. This is why the east playoff picture is a drug. Reinsdorf still demands playoffs and the East just keeps on losing to make it appear we're close.
