The Corpse to Orlando?
Johnny Ludden and Adrian Wojnarowski report
* The Orlando Magic have continued to shop for frontline help with Pat Garrity's expiring contract as bait. The Corpse for Garrity, Reddick, Battie, and Maurice Evans is a proposal that works on multiple levels. Orlando is giving up players stuck on the bench. Reddick is unhappy. The Bulls save, I believe around $16 mil and bury the Corpse. Orlando salaries are from HoopsHype. The Corpse could actually help Orlando's defense. We would have to buy out Jameson, Battie, Garrity and Evans to have a roster spot for Battie and Reddick. Reddick can be gone after this year or we could buy him out or trade him. He has a team option for next year.

Sign me up on this one.
This would also leave the Bulls with plenty of cap space to resign both Deng and Gordon if they so choose to.

a moratorium on "The Corpse"

Ben
He's a good human being, and I'd be happy to drink a beer with the guy. And I agree that "the corpse" is kind of stupid, especially to use in the title of a diary (where even casual visitors to the site will see it).
But the fact is, Ben has really, really hurt the team that we all root for. it's not just that he's playing poorly, it's that he has some attitude that he "deserves" to be a big-minute starter over talented young guys, and he's getting $15 mil a year to do it.

3.8M isn't much of a starting point for Wallace

Joe Smith?
How much does Wallace cost? A lot!
How good is he? Not very.
Still, the Magic are looking for some veteran help up front. Perhaps a deal with could be worked out. With his full-featured offensive game, he'd work out pretty nicely with Howard. If I were the Bulls, I wouldn't be stingy with him.
So how about the Bulls trade Smith for Garrity, Reddick and the rights to Fran Vasquez?
I'm not exactly a big fan of Reddick, but that frees up frontcourt time for Thomas and Noah while giving us a look at Reddick, which is at least something to do while our guards are riddled with injuries. It saves us a moderate amount of money next year and turns an old player into young ones.
Vasquez... don't know if he'll ever come over, but it doesn't seem he'll ever play for the Magic, and there's little harm in having his rights.

Getting rid of the rest
-----
1. Riles gets grit
Chicago gets: Jason Williams and Joel Anthony. Miami gets: Andres Nocioni and Chris Duhon
Rationale: Miami would like to get something for its expiring contracts. In Noc, they get a scrap-tastic player who gives Riles some flexibility depending on what he decides to do with Marion next season. Duhon gives them a replacement PG.
Bulls get rid of two players who are eating up playing. Whit EBoy can ride pine the rest of the season.
-----
2. Nellie gets the right former Warrior this time
Chicago gets: Mickael Pietrus, Kelenna Azubuike and Brandan Wright. Golden State gets: Joe Smith
Rationale: GS gets some value from Pietrus's expiring contract (who badly wants out), adding versatility to its frontcourt. It makes sense for the Warriors to make a push now so they can decide what to do with Baron Davis next season. The Bulls get a prospect in Brandan Wright (who has gotten 12 minutes total in the last 5 games) and a chance to audition some SGs (I'm worried about negotiations with Ben Gordon this summer).

Chad Ford
Chicago Bulls
"What are the Bulls doing? That's one of the questions heard most these days. The team's a mess, and no one knows what their strategy is.
It's no secret that Ben Wallace is available, less than two years after Chicago made him their big catch of 2006. But unless the Bulls are willing to attach Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Tyrus Thomas or Joakim Noah to a Wallace trade, it looks unlikely that they'll be able to move him.
The Knicks have shown significant interest in acquiring Wallace, but the Bulls can't be excited about bringing in Quentin Richardson and Malik Rose -- those guys aren't going to put the Bulls over the top."

I so hate the "over the top" metaphor
but still, Rose and Q for Wallace saves the Bulls $3.5M and if ever there was an "addition by subtraction" move for a team, this is it.
