Perfect

I wasn’t sure if I agreed with the opinion that VDN is a dumbass; now I’m sure. The +/- didn’t lie tonight. You won’t see a better stat line, JJ was tearing us up and Thabo was the one available player who might slow him a little, and he was playing very aggressively on both ends. What does Vinnie make of it? Bench him. We couldn’t keep them off the boards, so let’s run Noc, Gray and Hughes at them. Geez. The rotation should have been Rose, Gordon, Thabo, TT, Gray and Noah. yfBB keeps promising that the light’s gonna go on, any day now, wait for it. I don’t think so. This is last year all over again. Can you imagine how this season would have sucked if we didn’t get Rose and Kirk went down?

Joe Johnson in 2010!!!

For some reason, despite the fact that we will certainly target Bosh, Amare, and Wade before Joe Johnson, I have an odd feeling like he will be wearing a Bulls uni in 2011.

I dont think you could do it though

How much money would the bulls have left after they sign gordon? Even if they trade kirk and noch, i would bet that alot of other teams who werent able to land wade lebron and possibly manu would want to go after joe johnson….

The bulls need to have alot of money so they can win bidding wars with other teams…But if we got both of them, we could trade ben for a shiny new nickle (by nickle i mean a low 2 high 3 tier player)

Larry Hughes is still bitching about his minutes

LINK

Adamant in his stance that he’s a high-minutes starter since the February day the Bulls traded for him, Hughes expressed frustration over his playing time for the second time in five weeks Saturday as Thabo Sefolosha started for the injured Luol Deng in the 129-117 loss to Atlanta.

“I don’t accept it, but I deal with it,” Hughes said.

When Hughes last spoke out Nov. 18 in Los Angeles, it prompted a meeting among himself, coach Vinny Del Negro and general manager John Paxson.

What a fucking bitch

I bet you he gets a ton of minutes in the next game. The fact that the team caters to a cancer like that sums up everything wrong with this franchise right now.

Truly unbelievable.

Yet i’m not mad at Hughes at all. More power to him actually. The one to blame for this horseshit is Paxson. The way this team was constructed, it was only a matter of time before this kinda nonsense started popping up. I’m just so tired of his reign as gm. World class guy, but unfortunately he just isn’t cutting it anymore.

Bingo

Seems like the best thing that can happen to the Bulls the rest of the year is that this roster gets Paxson fired by season’s end.

I'm not defending Larry Hughes here, per se

but suppose you’ve been playing the lion’s share of minutes and then suddenly the guy in front of you gets hurt. It’s pretty natural to be surprised when the coach promotes the guy who’s been sitting on his ass behind you further cuts your minutes, which you weren’t really happy about to begin with.

Again, that’s not really a defense of Hughes, but just a recognition that this is a pretty messed up, inexplicable way of doing things.

Wasn’t there an article a while back where Pax was quoted as saying teams needed a pecking order. There really is none here, and it shows.

I completely forgot that we had a game today!

I missed it too. I’ve been trying to get work done in my dining room, and my TV’s been on ESPN’s bowl games all day.

From reviewing the boxscore, it looks like we didn’t play a lick of defense and got killed on the boards, but that all of the important (D-Rose, BG, Tyrus) and semi-important (Thabo) players had good offensive games.

I say trade or bench the flawed and/or costly veterans (Gooden, Hughes, Noc, Hinrich) and let the younger players develop. Paxson needs to make this happen through trades.

Is Noc including himself in this?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/chi-081227-chicago-bulls-atlanta-hawks,0,7297705.story

ATLANTA – The Bulls allowed season highs in points, field-goal percentage, field goals made and assists Saturday night in their 129-117 loss to the Hawks at Philips Arena.

Whenever that happens, as it could again in this most dreadful of defensive seasons, the best person to seek inside the locker room is Andres Nocioni, whose passion typically distills matters to the elemental.

“It’s personal, you know?” Nocioni said, barely hiding his disgust. “Everybody needs to take the challenge. If we don’t play ‘D,’ we will be out of the playoffs for sure. Today was terrible, terrible defense.”

Indeed, when a team posts season highs of its own with 54.4 percent shooting and 60 percent three-point shooting, that’s typically enough to win. Instead, the Bulls dropped their seventh straight road game and must win Monday at New Jersey to avoid a winless road month.

“We need to stop the ball one-on-one,” Nocioni said. “Then nobody helps or crowds guys or takes a charge. So everybody can drive the basket or get offensive rebounds. It’s energy. It’s attitude. And that’s it.”

but you can’t knock his effort. I think Noc has looked a little worse this year defensively because of the odd matchups he has had to play. He’s been defending some pretty damn good players lately, and has nobody behind him to rely on.

Same ol same ol. No D Bulls collapse in the 4th quarter again. Why?

Our guards give up another 40+ point game to Johnson while Bibby hits 17 on only 8 attempts. It seems no 3 is ever contested and our help defense is non-existent except for TT. When he goes out for Noce, whatever hope for a stop goes with him.

Rose made some spectacular penentration drives but in the 4th quarter he didn’t notice that Bibby was caught under the basket on switches, twice guarding Tyrus and once matched with Gray. Instead he fired up a couple of shots and was stripped a 3rd time. Tyrus has finally figured he can be much more effective going inside but never gets an entry pass for his efforts.

The Bulls bench was invisible. Combining the stats of Noah, Hunter and Simmons produced 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks in over 15 minutes of non-action. Although Larry Hughes scored 11 points in 21 minutes, he too had 0 steals, 0 assists, 0 rebounds, and 0 blocks and comitted 5 fouls. Why did he replace Thabo in crunch time? Nocioni had 11 points in 23 minutes and 2 whole rebounds and was the only reserve to have an assist. ONE to be exact. His matador defense was once again on display and he was charged with 3 fouls, all of which led to his bitching about them.

Tyrus gets better with each game. As they say, experience is the best teacher. Now if Vinny and our guards would try to take advantage of his athleticism once in awhile by giving him the ball while he is moving, this could be the start of something very positive in a season full of negatives, except for Rose’s amazing explosiveness and Gordon’s ability to score in bunches. The Bulls better sign him or Pax should buy a one way ticket to Palookaville.

Tyrus in 33 minutes had 15 points on 8 shots (he is starting to hit his J’s) and his FT shooting is excellent. He led the Bulls with 9 rebounds (Gray was 2nd with 5 boards, pathetic!), had 2 of the Bulls 4 steals (Gordon had the other 2), had 3 of the 5 blocks and altered many other shots, usually while helping on defense after another Bulls player let his man blow by him, and 2 assists but would have had more since his decision making was good all night. With confidence and playing time he is beginning to get his act together and I predict the Thomas haters are going to have to eat a lot of crow before too long. I think Vinny is starting to realize this, but I hate to say it, as bad as he is, Gray deserves to be playing ahead of Noah at this time. As I said in an earlier thread, the Bulls desperately need a legitimate center who can provide some interior defense in the paint or this is going to be a really long and disheartening season.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

I admit, I didn't watch the whole game,

but I honestly didn’t think this was a terrible game. We hung around until the last minute or two, and Tyrus, Rose, and Thabo had good games. And Ben. Sucks to loose, but there were some good things that happened.

Defense needs work, but our offense seems to be putting up good numbers lately. Especially compared to last year when anytime they shot over 40% it was a “good game.”

by Diz on Dec 27, 2008 11:08 PM CST reply actions

I honestly hate Nocioni being on this team!

And reading that quote above made my anger towards him flare even more. Him of all people has no place in talking about players going 1-on-1 and playing defense. Has he gone absolutely insane?!

Noc hurts this team with his selfish play, non-existent defense, flopping, flailing, and complaining to the refs. He’s a total bafoon out on the court. He makes me completely sick when I see him raise his palms and start bitching at the refs, which is after EVERY SINGLE CALL.

He took several selfish shots in tonight’s game and had no clue what he was doing on the defensive end. I about threw the remote through the TV and busted every window in the house when I saw him completely ignore BG in the 4th for what would’ve and should’ve been a wide open 3 pointer. Instead of hitting the open man, he took a contested 3, which missed badly, and which ended up as a basket for ATL. As Doug Collins would say, that was a 5-point swing….at a crucial time in the game. Sure, Ben takes his share of contested shots, but I would rather Ben take those shots 150% of the time, than idiot Nocioni.

His constant bickering, complaining, crying, bitching to the refs has gotten way out of control. It happens after every single call. Even when it’s completely obvious that he has basically chopped someone’s arms off. I would honestly applaud if some un-important goon player turned around and caved Noc’s face in. He does NOTHING on defense, so his counter-attack is to complain to the refs. This act is old and a million miles past annoying.

I could honestly care less what we get back for him, as far as talent is concerned, but Paxson needs to trade this idiot now. It makes my skin crawl every time I see him walk to the scorer’s table to check in. I would not care if we lost the next 30 games in a row if it meant not playing his ass.

Trade this fool and trade him now. He has no more use on this team. He has been beyond terrible this year, without having the “he’s playing injured” excuse. Let him be another team’s last piece or two to help in a playoff or championship run. The team should cut their losses and remove this bum immediately.

Noce has been lousy but he strikes me as someone who is much better on a good team (if that makes any sense). I think he tries hard all of the time, and sometimes it is too hard. His deficiencies are usually amplified when the team is losing or overall playing poorly. If the rest of the team is better, his role becomes taking charges, playing D, making the occasional shot and giving hard fouls. We were all a lot higher on Noce when this team was making the playoffs and playing good defense.

Just look at this idiot's quote from the trib:
“It’s definitely not the effort,” coach Vinny Del Negro said of the defensive woes. "Guys are playing hard and giving me what they can. Right now, one of our better big guys ( Drew Gooden) is out. Lu (Deng) is out. Kirk (Hinrich) has been out all year. Defensively, if you don’t control the paint in penetration, it’s hard to win.

“We changed defenses. When you don’t have the length or size or power up front, you have to scramble.”

Here’s the link.

Is there another coach that makes as much excuses as this guy? I suppose injuries are also the reason your team doesn’t run ANY offensive plays? And injuries are the reason why a mentally challenged person can make better substitutions than you? Not good.

by Juiceboxjerry on Dec 27, 2008 11:54 PM CST reply actions

Vinny's Defensive Schemes (make me want to puke)

I have tried being fair to Vinny. To give him a chance. For the most part, I think the offense is fine. It features are two best players, gets guys plenty of open shots, and when the Bulls move the ball, they shoot a high percentage. But the defense, the defense causes me Hulk like rage. Here are some of my biggest pet peeves -

1. Zone defenses are for shitty college teams and the Olympics, not the NBA. A zone in the NBA is junk. The players shoot the ball too well and move without the ball too well. These guys are in the NBA, they can pass to beat a 2-3 zone. Zone defense is a cop out and allows guys to not take responsibility. Any time the Bulls play zone, they give up about 2 offensive rebounds a possession. Further, the Bulls play the most lackluster 2-3 zone I have ever seen. Scrap this crap D. Its a gimmick

2. The Chicago Bulls do not rotate. They don’t rotate out to shooters. They don’t rotate to pick up guys driving to the basket. They don’t rotate off double teams. It is really amazing. I can’t tell if it is selfishness, a complete lack of recognition on the players parts, VDN’s coaching or some combination thereof. Obviously Aaron Gray has 2 cement feet, but you would think noah, tyrus or Noce could anticipate the play before the guy is at the rim.

3. VDN too often creates mismatches for the other team. The Hawks want to run a pick and roll with Bibby and Johnson? Well, why not switch it and make Rose guard Johnson. Horford is having problems scoring over Tyrus and Gray. Well lets see how he does against Nocioni.

4. Speaking of Nocioni, he and Hughes ARE NOT DEFENSIVE STOPPERS. In truth they are two of the more poor defenders on the team. Hughes gambles too much and doesn’t like to play physical. Noce fouls way too often, many times when he doesn’t have too. A foul is a foul, whether it “sends a message” or whether it just gets the other team in the bonus.

5. Defensive rebounding is IMPORTANT. Noce and Deng are not going to keep McDyess and Maxiell off the defensie backboards. The Bulls need to keep 2 of these 4 guys on the court for 90% of the game (Noah, Gooden, Thomas, Gray). Yeah, they aren’t great, but having Noce, Deng and Sefo play the 4 all the time leads to us being beaten on the boards every game.

6. The Bulls pick and roll defense is horrendous. The guards play it poorly, the big guys play it poorly. Poor Aaron Gray. He makes Shaq look like Ussain Bolt.

7. The Bulls get lousy defensive efforts from a number of players. Gooden, Rose, Noce, and Gray are, in my opinion, the worst offenders. Sometimes it seems as if Gooden just moves out the way when opposing guards drive to the hoop. I’ve never seen a player get caught looking the wrong way on a play so many times. Rose… what can you say. I was especially disappointed with his effort tonight as he went under screen after screen on Bibby. Sometimes it as was as if he was daring him to shoot. He’ll get better, but right now he is a sieve. Rose plays defense for about 16 seconds of every 24 second possession. Opposing teams have started to take notice.

8. Drew Gooden’s defensive classes. Obviously, the guys just aren’t attending.

and Noc can’t even handle sticking with one guy without getting lost. In a zone he destroys any containment.

It's not that fucking hard to understand

(When healthy):

Rose/Gordon/Deng/Thomas/Noah

Bench: Hinrich(20-25), Gooden (somewhere near), Nocioni (13-18), Gray (10-25), Hunter (scrap metal)

Oh, did I not talk about Hughes? That’s because he doesn’t belong in the mix. Maybe it’s because I’m such a one-sided person, and because I don’t know what’s going on in the locker room, but it seems beyond obvious to start these five people.

Regardless of: past performance this year, mental fitness, of physical fitness. I firmly believe that after a while, these five can win games, and subsequent playoffs.

by NittanyCub on Dec 28, 2008 3:00 AM CST reply actions

I meant Gray(10-15)

Somewhere very, very, near the 10 minute side. Starting Gray, regardless of his virility to practice or friendliness towards others, he fucking sucks. Gray starting in the NBA is fucking ridiculous, and it warrants vulgar language.

All is not lost.

After a horrendous start, Tyrus is 45 for his last 87. a % of .517. He has also conerted 27 of his last 30 free throw attempts (.900). Isn’t it time to recognize that he can be an effective part of the offense and run some plays for him?

Larry Hughes shooting % has been steadily dropping back to his norm and is now ,418 for the year while Nocioni is at .387 well below his career average of 44%. Meanwhile, Thabo is 32 for his last 57 (.561). Maybe its time to distribute more minutes to our younger players since they have been performing better than the veterans. Gooden was also shooting .414 for the month on 41 for 99 before he got hurt.

Based on these limited stats, is it fair for me to suggest Gooden, Noce and Hughes minutes should be reduced to the benefit of Tyrus and Thabo? Not only is their offense heading south recently, their defensive deficiencies are hardly worth repeating. I know Larry gets some steals, but his overall defense is somewhat less than stellar.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

I forgot to mention, as bad as he has played recently that Noah

is 20 for 33 in December, a % of .608 and he has converted 10 of 12 free throws this month as well (.833). I know figures can lie and liars can figure, but is he really as bad as Vinny has him labeled or is it more perception than reality? Why not go with the youngsters if we are goiing to lose anyway. At least it will speed up their development curves and help the Bulls in the long run when roster decisions will have to be made.

cause what I’m seeing is four losses in a row to teams we could easily have beaten.

you expect to win the championship or something this year. develop the youngsters with lots and lots of playing time to either reap the benefits of that or get trade stock up. no one wants hughes and gooden. If they do they should be fired.

Noah was glued to the bench, TT and Thabo didn’t get enough burn despite both playing very well.

Bitching about D but he is responsible for it: VDN

It has to be his lack of experience. How many times Atlanta ended up with a very small defender and a post up score. SO who’s fault that JJ was matched with Rose or Gordon?. How many times Williams got the offensive rebound while Larry was the one trying to block him?.. VDN needs to have a defensive clue and an idea how to stop the other team. He has no defensive plan. Scoring high is good but it is bad basketball. It really annoys me that he complains about D when he is responsible for the bad matchups.

by Fastbreak on Dec 28, 2008 9:56 AM CST reply actions

We are a lottery team: enjoy the few wins

We are better off being realistic about it and not hope they can achieve anything. An experienced coach will help. We need a Skiles without the personality disorder.

by Fastbreak on Dec 28, 2008 10:04 AM CST reply actions

Actually, we aren't

We are a team flirting with the playoffs because
1) weaker conference
2) quality of Rose & BG

That’s why we don’t gets the Ping Pong Balls. Which is partly the reason why if we never got Rose, we are in for another 10 years of not mediocrity,

by Alighieri on Dec 28, 2008 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

What they really meant
The players offered a variety of suggestions on how to solve the defensive problems. Andres Nocioni thinks everyone will have to take defense as a personal challenge. Derrick Rose wants better communication on the floor. Ben Gordon feels the things can only be solved in practice.

What they really meant: Noc: Let me play PF, don;t care where I play as long as I get my time. It is the other players that do not want to play D.

Rose: When we are on the floor, we are lost, out of position, not helping each other and it is not the players, we are not prepared.

BG: We just don’t have a plan, we need to develop one before we get to the court.

by Fastbreak on Dec 28, 2008 10:17 AM CST reply actions

The competition has decided that ..

Trapping D.Rose always and live with 55 combined points from both Gordon and Rose. is the key to victory against the lowly Bulls. Especially with Gooden out.

Deng will rarely beat you or rarely is deciding factor. And Kirk brings small ball, and is only effective when his shot is on. Which for Kirk is not often, similiar to Hughes. One difference in hughes from Kirk, is Hughes has tougher skin, his confidence never is display being down and he keeps shooting.

Noc seems frustrated, and it seems he believes he’s playing with a bunch of chumps and shoots always. Tyrus and Noah aren’t ready if ever they will be? I see very little team unity. It will be important now during this stretch that the guys don’t lose confidence and give up like they did last year.

Paxson has allowed the players to mostly all have little value, he holds on too long to evauate, while everyone else has already reached a conclusion or establied a ceiling. He thinks too slow. Like .. “Deng as a SG?” Deng has skinny ankles, wrist and weak hands, he’ll probably live on the injury list for years to come, unless he hits the weights and strength training hard.

by ImmanuelKant on Dec 28, 2008 11:15 AM CST reply actions

Hughes didn't ask for playing time during a game??

No player does that, unless possibly asking to take a last shot, just ludicrous, good conversation on how to improve the team though, hope the moderator MB doesn’t attack my post , as done every-time, sorry I am a fan, find it a bit odd when a moderator attacks every post, or particular players but switches outlooks every year. Have not seen that too often of someone that age (past any chance of every playing). Funny how everyone “knows” what each player is saying and thinking, you never will, but many I would wager want OUT.

Finally, those like the moderator ripping my post, my writing on a laptop as I watch a game, or mention of a player, I apologize. I was wrong, I thought it was an open forum (like a local bar MB) sorry, not Chicago schools though. St. Johns (Vincentian) of New York, high academics, but the 5th best school in college basketball, also Niagara, Loyola Catholic University D.C. and De Paul University in your area.

Have been on the court with Hughes, followed his career from being in awe of talent being 3 years older, never saw anything like it. Not many others ever made it, if they did, they are gone now, or maybe a few years in Europe. So you follow a career for fun, but don’t accuse me off being his mother? That’s weak! Don’t think many understand what it takes to be the top 360 players in the world and be in the NBA. This is not a guy that has ever been a trouble maker on or off any team or locker room. As coach said at that Catholic School, “Basketball is like Church, many go, few will ever understand.”

The misfortune of his life, loosing his only brother after ten years after a heart transplant in which he waited ten years for, during the Detroit vs. Cleveland playoffs (which he won at the point guard position if you follow the eastern division, Chauncy Billips, etc and then his wife almost dying the next summer from a brain aneurysm, so don’t get bent out of shape on a spelling error or typo, it’s a blog not a thesis. Someone may stimulate a conversation on your blog without being bullied by you, the moderator, not master (that is so weird Mr B.)?

So enough, back to the Bulls, on a higher level than MB who kneels to Rose, but does not care about his career or future of the team, how about playing him over 40 minutes almost every-game of the season (with some games already won keeping him in the game) do you think that is normal this early? Think he will last 50-60 games at that pace without an injury? Never seen it, just wonder the logic behind it? Sure it’s an average fan and PR booster, but not a team that will ever progress over the previous year when you play a rookie that much time. Plus, this is your prized gem, yes, a rare find, why would you risk moving the team in the right direction? He his banged up already. Not even stars with years in the league play that much this early? MB doesn’t point that out, just praise. Gordon is trouble, no team wants someone turning down two good offers with his numbers on both sides of the court. Other players are hurt, not traded to often until shown they can play. As said, there is nothing much to work with, so I would change it up cause the team which was off to a good start and a chance to make the first round, is sinking of late, with the same game strategy against even poor teams in the division.

Have some fun with it! If complaining, attacking does it for you fine, plenty of other blogs or post that don’t have your host ripping your post, for me, yet MB can offer no other strategy and past analysis and predictions that have been extremely poor of every player. Read back and see your mentors comments in previous interviews, has not been right once on a new player since 2003 except Rose (as tough call MB, but we are only a third of the way into the season). If your going to attack someone’s thoughts, give solutions, not contempt, scorn and bully taunts to those who visit your site, but as well respected sports writer in Chicago stated, no real value there. Have to go with that, so cancel me out babe, no more bookmark for M.B.

Points:

-Is ‘M.B.’ Blog-a-bull? Or the guy who runs this site? I don’t actually know his real name, but his first one’s matt …
-We’re not bent out of shape by your spelling errors, but by your inability to convey the information you want to convey in a readable way … reading what you write gives me a headache. I had to read this one twice. Be understandable.
-Have you looked at Gordon’s numbers this year? He’s getting that money …
-Have you been to the website made specifically to address L.H.‘s so-called “shot problem”? It’s pretty awesome. Like 7th on google if you look up his name. But the problem people have with him is that on the court, no matter how he is off the court … he’s greedy. He’s a black hole, through which no offense escapes. Also, a lot of people on this forum hate Hughes [myself included, though he has (I admit with much reluctance) played a lot better this year]; while this is an open forum, you need a thick skin around here to openly talk about how Hughes is some gift from the heavens to the world of basketball.
That’s how an open forum works: you talk, and other people respond, and if you don’t like what they’re saying, you probably should talk somewhere else.
Or, alternatively, just talk to yourself. :P

Rant on VDN

Despite there being no D, that game was the most fun I had up until the end of the third. Gray had a decent game, TT and Thabo had great games, Rose had a career high and BG was BG. That I can live with.

But the little voice in the back of my head that kept saying the Bulls could win it choked and died when Thabo and Gray came out for Noc and Hughes.

Pardon the armchair critic, but if a player is on fire offensively and has proven over the last 2 seasons to be able to guard the opposition’s best off-guard, you leave him on the damn floor.

This game is the last straw, if VDN wants to be a coach, let him get his licks as a staffer or asst then let him had a head coaching job in the very distant future. Any half bright GM would be able to see that VDN is not at all cut out to coach a basketball team. Give the team to Harris or Bickerstaff.

A rookie coach can be forgiven, but abut 30 games in, the same mistakes don’t shw a raw coach, just a stupid one. At this point, any regular on BaB is more qualified than this guy.

by Alighieri on Dec 28, 2008 3:54 PM CST reply actions

oh Sam!

He pretty much blames the loss on Ben being short and the ATL players having their way with him. I don’t quite remember it being as bad as Sam is saying…maybe I was too busy thinking of ways to hurt Nocioni through the TV. In any event, he’s still a tool.

And because their perimeter starters, Rose and Gordon, both are not good defenders, Rose likely because of inexperience and Gordon generally being overmatched in size no matter who he plays…Still, the Hawks picked on Gordon as much as they could, sending Johnson at him to open the game as Johnson and Gordon had one of those first quarter shootouts reminiscent of the Jordan-Dominique Wilkins matchups of the mid 1980’s…So when Gordon switched to Marvin Williams, Atlanta went to Williams over and over, seeking out matchup advantages. They even had Flip Murray drive at him when he came in.
