Game Preview #28 - Chicago Bulls at Detroit Pistons

[Thanks to Duhon's Hangover for today's preview -ed.]

“Ball don’t lie! Ball don’t lie!”

Anyone remember ‘Sheed taunting Noce a couple of years ago as he scored on the low block at will? Well it might happen tonight as the Bulls try to get to .500 tonight with a meeting against the Pistons in Auburn Hills. Drew Gooden and Tyrus Thomas are expected to be out tonight which leaves the Bulls very thin up front with Gray and Nocioni (Macaroni!) [huh? -ed.].

We can expect lots of small ball lineups with Noce aimlessly parading around at center and most likely a career night from Jason Maxiell, as every big who plays the Bulls turns into Moses Malone. This game, however, is winnable as the Pistons no longer boast the best 5 man starting line up in the league and all of their players, save for Stuckey, seem to be on the decline. Not to mention, the careful chemistry of the Pistons are no longer intact as their leader and friend has been moved for a superstar who is not known for his team-first mentality.

Look for Rose to have his way with the smaller Iverson and attack him relentlessly, AI recently got lit up by Mike Bibby in Hotlanta, and as Michael Curry put it: "The only thing we didn't do well is, we didn't defend Mike Bibby" I get the feeling we should be able to substitute Rose’s name for Bibby’s tonight. Rose is looking to get back on the comeback trail after a “mini-slump” over the past few games and busting out against the Jazz. Stuckey has been playing well of late and easing Piston fans woes about losing Big-Shot, yet he should still have a tough time containing BG who has been pumping out 23ppg the last 6 contests and has been shooting 54% from beyond the arc (SHOW HIM THE MONEY!!).

Deng should have a defensive advantage over Hamilton and be able to contain the svelte UConn alumnus. However, he is still trying to find an offensive rhythm and hasn’t been able to put together solid games in a while since the trade. The once slashing Deng has been reduced to a spot up jump shooter, even extending himself to the 20ft lines, as the lane needs to be clear for Poohdini to operate. Where the real advantage the Pistons will have is in the front court as both Prince and Wallace can hit long range jumpers and will force Noah or Gray to extend themselves and contest. With Noce’s penchant for "gambling" on D, Sheed will have one of two looks: open jumpers and frown face disbelief at the ref.

This game may ultimately be decided with bench play, as Detroit has McDyess back and the Bulls just may not have enough big bodies to crash the boards and defend. This game can turn into a litmus test for the Bulls and a microcosm of this mini-road trip, here’s to a W and shutting Deeettrriiiiooooottt Basketball fans upppppppppppp.

The Bulls have done surprisingly well against the Pistons, our 6-2 record in the last two seasons, sans the postseason, speaks for itself.

Random Thoughts:

Blogging with the Enemy: Detroit Bad Boys | Need4Sheed | PistonsNationBlog

Tonight’s Pistons match-up starts a 4 game east coast road trip against eastern conference playoff-spot vying clubs of Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, and New Jersey. This will be a tough stretch for the Bulls as all of these games are winnable, but then again with our abysmal road record (3-11) anything is possible.  An optimist would hedge their bets at 2-2 in this stretch but a 1-3 may seem more earthly. Tonight’s game should erase doubts or put more fans into panic mode. The Pistons are still in a funk in the post-Billups era and can’t seem to keep Allen Iverson on the floor in the last minutes of a game. They are coming off of two losses to the Jazz and Hawks and are a mediocre 14-11.  Not too long ago the Pistons were the bees knees of the Central division, but now-a-days the Cleveland Lebrons are the cat's meow.

Good post Man...

I’m hoping that Rose crosses iverson (payback!). Think I’m gonna turn this song up till game time..

"Deng should have a defensive advantage over Hamilton and be able to contain the svelte UConn alumnus. "

I don’t think Deng can stay with Hamilton and all his movement. Deng is a good defensive player, but Hamilton is an all-star. No way Deng shuts him down.

i think the Pistons start

Stuckey, AI, Hamilton, Prince and Wallace. THe bulls will match up Rose, Gordon, Deng, Noce, Gray (yikes!). So I think Duhon’s hangover is right, at least initially, Deng and Hamilton will be matched up. Unless you want to put Noce on Hamilton, which is a scary thought.

Speaking of Prince

let’s see if he posts Deng up with ease yet again.

This is especially true since they aren't running the offense for him anymore.

Hamilton is like Deng in a way: he’s at his best in an offensive set designed to run him off some picks for a curl into the lane or a jump shot. In the free-form “AI dribbles out the shot clock” offense, Hamilton is much easier to guard, especially for someone who can muscle him a bit on cuts (like Deng should be able to do).

Like Rose said in one of the videos posted in the past few days, the key to this game will be defense and rebounding. If Wallace/Amir/Maxiell/Tayshaun control the boards, we lose. I could seriously see this happening without Gooden and Tyrus, unless Gray has a huge game, or Noc and Deng decide to actually box people out.

by arjoseph on Dec 23, 2008 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

matchups

the problem is that Bibby burned Det with 3s, not yet Rose’s top skill … but hopefully Gordon can do that

Deng – seems like good game for Deng to help out with rebounding, on both ends and if RHam is guarding him he should attack the Oboards (hopefully getting more then it hurts if Bulls get beat in transition) …we all know Hamilton runs a ton so is tough cover for Deng, almost rather see Thabo at SF and Deng at PF vs Prince with Noc off the bench

Bulls will win if they shoot and make a bunch of 3s

It’s certainly possible.

Noah

seems if Gooden / Thomas are out, Noah could be huge in this game as Bulls could use his energy, speed and lenght at C/PF spots

Until he gets winded after 5 minutes.

Then you put his backup in for 3 minutes

Then put Noah back in the game. If said backup is actually doing a good job, keep him in for longer, then put Noah back in. Hit the blunt. Repeat for rest of the season.

he's actually been outplaying his starting counterpart for several games

but I suppose we should be fine with that, as Vinny will figure it out eventually, and then we’ll feel silly for wanting it in the first place because it was some kind of eventuality. And then we can read writers and listen to broadcasters for every opinion we need in the future. Rick Morrissey has no issues, so I don’t either! So long, everybody! :)

Dare I say you are taking the "airing of grievances" a tad far this Festivus season

some might deem it irrelevant in the big picture. There’s war in the streets and war in the middle east!

Bad day at Gray Rock

The Pistons are going almost as small as the Bulls. Only possible match-up for Gray is Maxiel. Rasheed would score inside or out.
Thabo played great low post defense against Utah, better than Chapu. I’d like to see him take a crack at Sheed.

The ideal lineup tonight?

Rose, Gordon, Deng, Thabo, Noah. I’d love to see those guys play together for 30 minutes.

Can two teams still be heated rivals

if neither are very good?

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

Cubs-Brewers?

Packers-Bears?
I’d say so.

"You remember the first time you picked up a basketball video game and you had no idea how to run plays, so you just gave the ball to your shooter and you ran around the court aimlessly until a defender was far enough away and then you jacked up a shot? THAT IS LARRY HUGHES!"

If the rivalry was like only 4 years long and lasted because of specific players?

well the Bulls should be good

and the Pistons think they’re still great (and they’re still good).

So we may have to use our imagination, but it’s not far off.
