"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

Shameless repost from the open thread:

(visiting from Blazers Edge)

My thoughts from an outsider’s perspective are such:

1. Derrick Rose.
2. This game was gonna’ be a loss. Everyone loses to the C’s.
3. Deng showed some fire in the third quarter. That was nice.
4. Two white guys doesn’t usually work too well for a big man combo. Hate to be racist, but that’s a fact. Your big man combo is pretty soft—definitely the most pressing need on this team from what I saw. Noc fronting KG on a weak 2-3 zone defense is…well…not pretty. Needs to be addressed via trade or draft next year.
5. Your guys play a lot of one guy holds the ball while two other guys without the ball sets screen for each other until one gets open. The guy with the ball then passes to the open guy. This works well, but if the guy receiving the ball gets covered, there’s no real option B. A couple screens and maybe a backdoor cut is the sum and total of your offensive schemes. There needs to be more movement.
5a. Your guy who holds the ball while two others screen for each other usually gets stuck in the corner. He should stay at the top of the key, as it opens up the floor a lot more.
6. Derrick Rose.

Anyway, tough game tonight, but good luck in your next game, whenever that is. Wish you guys nothing but the best. Got nothin’ but love for Derrick Rose.

Offensive movement is an option for the Bulls

They’re actually pretty good when everyone does their role (they got some easy scores against the Celtics starting 5, most of the points against the bench came because the Celtics bench is stupid and really bad when there’s no starter with them).

Man, you’re an idiot.

when has two white guys worked as a big man combo?

Spencer Hawes and Brad Miller. George Mikan and whoever he played with 50 years ago. Who am i missing?

by robinhood on Dec 20, 2008 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

definetaly not a smart comment but was meant to be sarcastic

If we front the Celtics with Noc (he is white – italian latino) and Gray (very white) then only an idiot coach could think that we have a chance to win. It is not that they are white, but are foot speed challenged.

by Fastbreak on Dec 20, 2008 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

how was that not a smart comment?

“Two white guys doesn’t usually work too well for a big man combo.” That is a true statement. As evidence by the fact that other than george mikan and whomever he played with there have been no good white big men combos. 79A% of NBA is black. 12% of America is black. So either blackness indicates higher basketball aptitude or there is a silent variable somewhere at work. Those numbers are too different to be insignificant.

by robinhood on Dec 20, 2008 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

basketball at the time of Mikan was inferior.

It is nor smart because it says that Gray and Noc are bad because they are white. Basketball is a sport much more popular with african americans and AAs are just better at basketball. Whether you think that it is better athletes, that is fair. We just need to move on and should not see things as black/white or whatever. They suck cause they suck not cause they are white.

The overflow thread:

Timely.

you guys are actually a lot more civil over here than we were when we lost to the C’s. I was worried some people were going to egg police cars or burn down little old grandmas’ houses after we lost to Beantown.

I don't think expectations are very high

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

by Evil Pax on Dec 19, 2008 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Well, you have a team that is expected to be a playoff factor this year, and a contender

in a year or two.

Without Rose, the Bulls would be a 20-25 game winner. With Rose, a possible 7th or 8th seed and out in the first round.

by Granny Waiters on Dec 19, 2008 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

(sigh) even getting to the playoffs would be considered a success.

yeah

i think it’s pretty funny on espn’s playoff odds that pretty much only 9 teams have a chance to get in in the west. the other 6 have already effectively been eliminated.

by Jaina on Dec 20, 2008 1:00 AM CST up reply actions

the game

really wasn’t that bad until the end of the 3rd.

only good thing about playing boston is i get to watch it in HD because it is the “home” feed for me.

tommy can bite me for saying rose doesn’t have the basketball iq of rondo. nothing against rondo but it’s rose! i basically have to ignore the announcers the entire time because they make me want to gouge out my ears. seriously, they had to pick the people with the worst boston accents ever to do these games. i live here, most people do not talk like that except in very specific areas of the city.

too many turnovers, too much kendrick perkins. nocioni wasn’t that bad, and we had no choice but to play him. i felt like vinny gave it up to our scrubs too early though, the lead wasn’t THAT bad at the beginning of the 4th and playing against the 2nd unit got us back in the game in the first place.

i knew we were gonna lose though, and the final score sucks because it wasn’t really a blowout the ENTIRE game… and it’s kind of amazing to shoot 50% against these celtics.

by Jaina on Dec 19, 2008 9:14 PM CST reply actions

Sorry to hear you are stuck in Boston.

Agree about the accents. I turned off the Boston feed and listened to the Russian feed.

by Granny Waiters on Dec 19, 2008 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

i was afraid

audio and video would not be synced or else i was considering doing such a thing as well.

and i don’t feel like i’m “stuck” in boston. i like it here. :) but i do miss chicago. i’m back often enough though, my parents live there still.

by Jaina on Dec 19, 2008 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

The problems with Boston are:

- Patriots fans,
- Red Sox fans,
- and worst of all, celtics fans.

by Granny Waiters on Dec 19, 2008 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

red sox fans might be the worst.

though i admit i “like” the red sox behind the two chicago teams, because it is the only sport my bf even close to likes (he doesn’t really follow any)… he’s a boston native. and this is part of the reason he is great because he was not a celtics fan ever, so he likes the bulls. :D

by Jaina on Dec 19, 2008 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

actually i mean

he likes basketball now but only cause of me.

by Jaina on Dec 19, 2008 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

oh, and for shooting 50%

and of course not getting an ounce of credit from the boston announcers, with them saying “well, they aren’t like this normally.” maybe so, but you could at least admit we shot well.

by Jaina on Dec 19, 2008 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

considering Boston is bringing "it" every night

I see it as a success. A small success, but I’ll take it.

basketball iq.

Rose would look like albert einstein playing with KG, PP, and ray allen. I know it is not as simple as just playing with good players but i do get sick of all the rondo hype.

by robinhood on Dec 19, 2008 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

I wish they'd stop trying to lift up other players once Rose has a bad game

Its silly to make a comparison after each match up.
Gadzuric had a good game against Gooden but that never leads to a discussion about whos better. (at least I’d hope)

by Camry on Dec 19, 2008 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

I wish Deng showed up more often

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

I didn't get to see the game.

Who was playing when the bulls gave up 41 points?

by robinhood on Dec 19, 2008 9:45 PM CST reply actions

I didn't want to watch the game.

I thought we would get massacred, and I was right. We Larry’d. But two concerns:
1. Tyrus gets the DNP? What’s wrong with VDN?
2. Our frontcourt Hughes’s so much that Kendrick Perkins goes off for 25? What’s wrong with Paxdorf?
It always seems to come down to those two, doesn’t it?

Things could be worse. We could have kept (name redacted).

by stupidgenius on Dec 19, 2008 9:50 PM CST reply actions

1. Tyrus is out with a concussion.
2. The guards could not stop dribble penetration, the bigs over compensated for KG, and Perk played under the hoop for layups all night.

The Bulls defense is really bad.

Its not like they don’t know how to play defense, several of these guys were on the #2 defense in the NBA a couple of years ago…they just are not actually playing it…While its easy to point the finger at the coaching staff, I will also point the finger at the players themselves…Until they realize the importance of contesting shots, closing out under control, making the proper rotations and talking on the floor, they will continue to give up well over a 100 a night…its sad how many teams have had their best scoring nights of the season against this squad.

by Dionysus2.0 on Dec 19, 2008 9:51 PM CST reply actions

The current Bulls lack

Antonio Davis, PJ Brown and the decent in his first year as a Bull Ben Wallace to play interior defense.

Gooden, Nocioni and Gray are turnstiles.

by Granny Waiters on Dec 19, 2008 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

And we didn't have Gooden

Or Tyrus, so the defense inside was even worse than usual.

There isn’t much to dissect from this game. The Bulls suck on defense, and turn the ball over at an abnormal rate when it’s not in Rose’s hands (BG made some really poor decisions tonight with the ball). They shot the ball extremely well, and against most teams they would have won tonight. I doubt they take anything from this game and apply it to Utah tomorrow, so I expect Milsap and Okur to punk us.

I wonder if the Celtics enjoyed running their offense like it was practice

Because that was just a lame attempt at defense. Gray is bigger and probably weighs around the same as Perkins, but you would think Aaron Gray wasn’t even on the court the way Perkins got a dunk every damn time. Rondo ran their offense perfectly, you couldn’t have asked for a more well-executed offense. The Bulls made their run against the Boston bench, I liked Thabo’s contributions, Deng, Rose, and Nocioni all played well (although the lack of defense just meant they were trading baskets).

I wonder how Brian Scalabrine feels knowing that every Boston fan treats him like a human victory cigar. I also found it comical that Tony Allen would attempt a windmill dunk since he tore his ACL like a dumbass last year for dunking a ball in preseason.

Bulls fans have a love affair with Nocioni, but at least he’s produced for this team for 4+ seasons, not some scrub who couldn’t even beat Matt Bonner in a 1-on-1 game.

Quit...

Most disturbing, and I have been around hoops long enough to know it when I see it, was they QUIT in the 4th quarter. Just went through the motions.

The body language alone, slumped losers.

Noah seemed as if he did not want to be out there in the 4th.

Whatever, these guys are paid a LOT of money, and, they were down 2 at half…..

I realize that it;s the players who have to get it done out there, yet I cannot let
VDN off the hook for this one completely either.

He still is TERRIBLE at substitutions and what’s up with his time-out calls?
No set starting line up after 20-something games.
Then VDN through in the towel and made it officially garbage time, kind of early for that,
when Cedric Simmons and Lindsey Hunter got in. Sad…

Lastly, the Bulls didn’t just seem intimidated, it was more like AWED.
WTF is up with letting Perkins become Wilt in that game?
SOMEBODY, needed to PUSH and SHOVE him out there, and
lay a HARD foul on maybe ONE of I don’t know how many easy
dunk attempts.

People talk about “better athletes” today, yeah, okay, but, “in the day”, after
about his 3rd easy dunk inside, Perkins would have been demolished by
someone. The Bulls made no attempt to send any message to Boston, except,
you are so overwhelmingly better than us, come on in and dunk.

Sloan, Van Lier, Love, Walker, Boerwinkle (Motta) team in SAME scenario:
HARD FOULS INSIDE, PRESSING IN THE BACK COURT, HELP-D; and NOT BACKING
DOWN or BEING INTIMIDATED AND PLAYING HARD TO THE END!

Current bunch are lightweight wusses that let Celtics have it their way ALL game basically. Someone needs to grow a pair and step up. The team has NO LEADER, on the court, and, well, VDN; Paxson and Reinsdorf off of it.

Conclusion: Bring in some BIG who has a heart and a pair of balls, please Mr. Paxson!
Your “bigs” play SMALL!

by rtblues on Dec 20, 2008 5:05 AM CST reply actions

Someone else agrees with me that the Bulls need an enforcer or two inside.

Bill Cartwright would have made sure that Perkins received an “accidental” elbow to the head when they were fighting over a rebound. Oakley would have smashed him with a hard pick when he was not paying attention.

by Granny Waiters on Dec 20, 2008 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

The need for an enforcer is drastically reduced

When you have a big man who can actually play defense and rebound. I will say we need someone with legit talent up front way before we need a Charles Oakley.
