Bulls/Hockey and ESPN1000

I sent this to ESPN1000.

"It is getting hard to listen to your anti-bulls talk radio. It is bad enough that we have to be limited to almost 24/7 analysis of the Bears games and a limited time to the Bulls. That time has been used to bash our Bulls.  Ok, so you all prefer Hockey and what has hockey done for Chicago?. There is very little support in the City of Chicago for Hockey.  It belongs in Canada and Chicago is a Bulls town. Having a good month is not reason to think that that losing team will do well. What have they won?.. They have been a joke for years and now all of you are on the bandwagon. You need to give up the Bulls broadcast to a station that supports the team!!!"

listen to the Score

they definitely won’t talk about Hockey. They’ll still say the Bulls suck. And rightfully so.

2nd that recommendation

Every announcer/personality has their preferences. If those ESPN 1000 shows did talk more Bulls, you wouldn’t be very interested because the guys don’t care and have little knowledge of the game/team.

also

Chicago is not a Bulls town. Not in the least.

It is a Bear town since football

transcends the cultural barriers. When looking at the City only, I bet the Bulls would come up as more popular than the Hawks. Most of the support for hockey is from the suburbs.

What I hate is not that the criticize the Bulls (I also think that they suck or are just mediocre) but they don;t provide any good analysis to why they suck or show that they care. We know they can suck, but we care.

who supports hockey?

i went to a hawks game once. but it was free because my friend was the step granddaughter of bill wirtz…

by Jaina on Dec 12, 2008 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

I support hockey

Hockey is quite awesome. I have been to around 8 games this season and they are a lot of fun. Much better in person than on TV. The Hawks are a solid team and very young. The future is very bright for hockey here in Chicago.

by careyrd on Dec 13, 2008 2:03 AM CST up reply actions

was definitely more fun in person

but i guess my point was i don’t think hockey is more popular than basketball in chicago…

I really like the title of this post.

"It’d be ridiculous to hate someone for simply what they say in a sports blog. But I greatly dislike every syllable of your angst-filled, smarmy, nondescript, half-assed, elitist-garbage responses." –Rogerspark Kris

ha

I read the title three times trying to figure out what you liked. I was about to conclude that you must be being sarcastic, for no reason, and as i was going to hit reply….i saw it….

Just busy with work.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious, though, if I said I was busy starting my own blog, and hoped to make money off of it? The main reason it’d be funny is that I’d get called out in a second by Matt. But no, just busy with work…

Where has HSCS been by the way?

chicago is a jordan town

..but in reality it’s a bears town followed by the cubs and whitesox

by Dennis Rodman on Dec 12, 2008 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Maybe for americans

But if you mention Chicago to a european guy, he will tell it’s a Bulls town, because of Jordan, of course. NBA has more fans that NFL, NHL or MLB in Europe. The only NFL game that most stations show during the year is superbowl, nothing more…

It seems to me that people not from Chicago are surprised that its such a football town.

Probably because most international coverage focuses on the lovable losers or MJ and co.

i don't know that i'd rate the sox above the bulls

but i do think bears and cubs come first.

on the other hand, i’m a (former) northsider, so i didn’t see the white sox side of things.

It may be a hundred years and counting.

But we shall never give up hope! GO CUBS!

Things could be worse. We could have kept (name redacted).

I agree with the letter you sent...

I don’t even hear them talk about the Bulls ever. When they do it is 30 minutes before or after a game. It’s cool to rag on the Bulls I don’t mind that, but I genuinly believe that they don’t like the Bulls and are just making fun of them because they are frustrated.

The Bears 24/7 game analysis is so boring and redundant.

Boers and Bernstein

Listen to Boers and Bernstein from 2-6 on the score for more Bulls talk than any other Chicago radio show during the day. Terry ran the Bulls beat for the Sun Times in the 80s and Dan has worked in the front office of a CBA team. Both really know basketball and they make it fun. They are very critical of the Bulls which is nice because both papers beat reporters give Pax and the team a break. There Bulls points of recent note are that Deng is very soft…… Derrick Rose was the best player on the team when drafted they dodged the stupid myth that he’d be brought along slowly….. and their take on Aaron Grey ( PANTHER) is very funny……

The Blackhawks have sold out every game this season

So apparently some people are interested in them. And quite frankly, they’re a better team than the Bulls are, so I can understand why they would talk about them. Other than Derrick Rose, there’s not much about the Bulls that would be interesting to the non-hardcore NBA fan.

Hockey is niche sport

the NBA aint quite there yet. I don’t know if the Shamrox are better than the Bulls either.

Sure, but the Blackhawks are the new, exciting thing

Let’s face it, they might as well have not had a franchise over the past decade.

Maybe there would be more buzz surrounding the Bulls if they had bothered to promote this Rose kid, instead of running commercials with random fans instead. A lot of people don’t follow the NBA closely until football season ends, so maybe by January or February there will be more buzz.

coincidentally I was at the Blackhawks game Sunday

and they did a nice job promoting their guys for the all-star game, with parodies of negative campaign ads with eachother.

Compare this with the Bulls ‘campaign’, where Derrick Rose gets equal billing with Andres Nocioni

The only campaigning I ever heard

Was King and Funk after the initial fan votes were released.

Noce should make the All-Star team. The Bulls should take out full page ads in every major newspaper with a photo of his +/- stats.

What do you see in a 14 ppg with no jumper that makes one think he will be better than a 26ppg\ 12rpg guy? Is there some kind of magic formula that tells you 14 > 26??

The Hawks are being promoted like hell though, marketing their exciting young talent

The Bulls……well we all know what their marketing strategy is.
