Belize, can you edit this and add a “&fmt=18” (without the quotes) at the end of the video URL? That will make it show in HD.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_53-Y-oLgc&eurl&fmt=18

That way we can see Vinny’s commitment to professionalism more clearly?

Which part do I add that into?

After the src?

Shouldn't this be a technical?

or something. He’s practically out on the court.

by CJ Bulls on Dec 11, 2008 2:47 PM CST reply actions

I'm trying to find the rules explained

There’s this Lakers fan video edit trying to show the Celtics defense against him in the 08 Finals. He shows lots of clips of the Celtics bench standing up and yelling when Kobe shoots. He claims this is an obvious technical foul. He doesn’t really explain it.

The only rule I could find is where it states the players and coaches are prohibited from leaving the designated coaches boxes and the players bench. It doesn’t really say anything about standing from your player seat and yelling.

The only technical foul I have ever witnessed call on a team’s bench was when a player on the bench was talking down to a referee about a bad call. I think the technical was awarded to the head coach in this situation.

I’d like to read more about it though. It sure seems like weak attempts to distract players on the court, but when you’re on the road the coaches and the bench are all you’ve got on your side.

espn showed last year(during playoffs?)

Lakers bench would throw towels up in the air during free throws.

and you could see Celtics bench yelling in players ears that were shooting 3’s near their bench’s corner.

Yeah, no biggie

I do it all day when I go to games, of course it goes sum more like this

Me: Ref! Ref!

(Ref ignores)

Me: Ref! Ref!

(Ref ignores again)

Me: Ref! Ref!

(Ref, hears me but trues to ignore me more)

Me: Ref! Ref!

(Ref glances at me)

Me: You Suck!

this was the best I could find...
The coach’s position may be on or off the bench from the 28’ hash mark to the baseline. They are permitted between the 28’ hash mark and the midcourt line to relay information to players but must return to the bench side of the 28’ hash mark immediately or be called for a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul.A coach is not permitted to cross the midcourt line and violators will be assessed an unsportsmanlike technical foul immediately. All assistants and trainers must remain on the bench. Coaches and trainers are not permitted to go to the scorer’s table, for any reason, except during a dead ball.
c. Any club personnel not seated on the bench must conduct themselves in a manner that would reflect favorably on the dignity of the game or that of the officials.Violations by any of the personnel indicated shall require a written report to the Basketball Operations Department for subsequent action.

free throws:

During all free throw attempts, no opponent in the game shall disconcert the shooter once the ball is placed at his disposal. The following are acts of disconcertion:
(1) raising his arms when positioned on the lane line on a free throw which will not remain in play,
(2) waving his arms or making a sudden movement when in the visual field of the shooter during any free throw attempt,
(3) talking to the free throw shooter or talking in a loud disruptive manner during any free throw attempt.

technical fouls:

A technical foul(s) may be assessed to any player on the court or anyone seated on the bench for conduct which, in the opinion of an official, is detrimental to the game

by NormVanBeer on Dec 11, 2008 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

If you read point c. It should fit under that guideline.

He is out of his seat in an effort to distract an opposing team’s player during a shot. If you look at all the free throw rules, what VDN is doing violates basically all of those. It’s just not a free throw. Maybe because it was out of nowhere for the first time, the refs didn’t notice it. It just seems very unprofessional for a coach.

by CJ Bulls on Dec 11, 2008 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

That's it
A technical foul(s) may be assessed to any player on the court or anyone seated on the bench for conduct which, in the opinion of an official, is detrimental to the game

That’s a lot of judgment room for the officials. They already allow some coaches to go bonkers and exceed the coaches box area so long as they go bonkers and then recede immediately when they realize they can’t affect the non-call.

non-unsportsmanlike?

In the first text box it describes this technical…something seems wrong with that word…its like two negatives or something…

Tacky

This just makes Vinny look weak.

Vinny was around QRich in Phoenix. He would have been a color commentator while QRich was with the Suns.

It’s below the belt stuff, but one you don’t take away points unless they do it again.

Yeah, and this is the guy who can speak for what's professional and what's not

I’ll continue giving him the benefit of the doubt because a rookie coach, but man does he (and by extension Paxson/Reinsdorf) just look pathetic. Love it live!!!!

What do you see in a 14 ppg with no jumper that makes one think he will be better than a 26ppg\ 12rpg guy? Is there some kind of magic formula that tells you 14 > 26??

Awesome

Am I the only one that actually liked that?

He’s not the first coach to do that. I think both Pat Riley and Phil Jackson do that. I know a lot was brought up over Riley doing that. I think Skiles had done tha tin the past too.

He’s getting the crafting veteran coaching tricks down already.

Way to go VDN

ummm, q hit the shot

why are people even discussing this?

I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE

by CONOR6 on Dec 11, 2008 4:46 PM CST reply actions

hmmm

1. because it was cheesy
2. because VDN tore Noah and Tyrus a new over how unprofessional and uncommitted they were…so a coach is exempt from that I guess.
3. because we can

by NormVanBeer on Dec 11, 2008 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

it was more of a rhetorical question

a knick player on the bench swiped his towel at hughes when he hit his three pointer…so is your point that because VDN is a coach he can’t bark at a player while attempting a shot?

I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE

by CONOR6 on Dec 11, 2008 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

coaches are on a different level than players

yes. This is progress. Now we can move on to why it’s more important to get the most out of your top-10 draft picks as opposed to your mid 2nd rounders…

i think its safe to say that VDN is trying to get the most out of all his players

i am pretty sure he is not coaching the bulls for shits’n’giggles, he would like to not only keep his job, but do well at it, too. isnt it possible that tyrus isnt very good because he isnt very coachable, no matter what thorpe says.

by Calogero on Dec 12, 2008 3:00 PM CST reply actions

The best part is that it worked

COACHING! Thank you!

That was weak, but funny. I guess the line for me is that I don’t mind the scream itself, but actually stepping on the court to get in Q’s ear… that’s not right.

Players waving towels, trying to distract the shooter, even coaches in CERTAIN VERY IMPORTANT SITUATIONS— I guess that’s fine but lame. But stay off the court.

Oh VDN… you’re in an impossible scenario. Just be consistent, dammit.
