Many many many awards

Was there even an argument in the decision?

I mean Mayo is doing great but Pooh is doing everything and more

by Option27 on Dec 1, 2008 3:11 PM CST reply actions

For me, the most important thing

is to consider the role they play on their team and the performance of their team in general. Rose is the floor leader and play-maker of a team that’s basically played .500 ball through a brutal opening stretch to the season; Mayo is a catch-and-shoot player on a dreadful (4-13) team. Their statistics might be close, but their NBA impact hasn’t been.

Don’t get me wrong – Mayo’s terrific. I love his game and he seems to be a genuinely good guy. He’s got all-star, Brandon Roy type potential.

But as far as ROY – thus far - I don’t think it’s close.

Have you watched Mayo play?

I haven’t, and I’m curious to know exactly what kind of player Mayo has been. I mean, I’ve seen the impressive box scores, but have Mayo’s points come within the flow of the game? Or is he a chucker? Has carried his team in important stretches like Rose? Or is he getting his during garbage time?

by drew gooden's facial growth on Dec 1, 2008 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

I think he's doing the opposite of Rose's scoring mentality

He probably puts up big numbers in the first half and then goes cold or quiet in the second. The difference is Rose ups his game towards the end like most all-stars do with their “killer instinct”.

by dannyp07 on Dec 1, 2008 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

I've watched him a few times

and come away very impressed. They’re not garbage-time numbers, and he’s not forcing shots nearly as much as he did at USC. He scores basically in two ways: spot up shots and mid-range. He doesn’t have the quickness to get to the rim and finish unless his defender is unbalanced, but he can draw fouls with the best of them. Strong defender and just physically strong. In just about any other year, he’d be the clear ROY.

Lucky for us, it’s not any other year. Rose is the ROY hands down.

Quick thought experiment to illustrate my point: put Derrick Rose on a team with a star swingman (Gay), a solid center (Gasol) and some athletic power forwards (Hakim Warrick, D. Arthur). Figure that team would’ve traded Conley instead of Miller, so Mike Miller at shooting guard. Put the ball in Rose’s hand and go.

Good team? Probably not. But 4-13? Not a chance in hell.

Gotcha

Seems like the real deal. And to think that Minnesota could’ve had a nice inside/outside combo in Jefferson and Mayo.

by drew gooden's facial growth on Dec 1, 2008 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

Ouch

good point. Time for McHale to find some new work. Jefferson/Mayo…and I’ve never understood how Love was supposed to fit there, when Jefferson’s pretty much perfectly suited to power-forward, and there’s no way Love can play center.

by MPG on Dec 1, 2008 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

I think the reasoning for Love over Mayo was that its hard to keep players in Minnesota.

Instead of getting a better player from Southern Cal who they knew would absolutely not want to stay in Minnesota for his second contract, they picked K-Love. Or something retarded like that. (Could always keep the player for trade value!)

This could have been McHale’s own reasoning, not Mayo “demanding” any particular team like with Chairman Yi who is now playing much better for New Jersey after being traded from the Bucks.

Mayo has been better than what many people expected, at least for his rookie year.

I have a hard time seeing someone prefer Memphis over most any other

city in the US…unless he/she is very bitchy about cold weather.

(like I said before, Nashville should have gotten an NBA team, not Memphis)

I love

Memphis and would move there in a second if I didn’t like my job.

by majoyenrac on Dec 2, 2008 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

yeah, memphis is alright

i’d choose it over minneapolis, in this particular comparison…

by Jaina on Dec 3, 2008 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

Ah

that would have to be it. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense – either in terms of fit or overall ability. Though it wasn’t a straight up swap; I think they got Mike Miller out of the deal.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Dec 1, 2008 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

They got Mike Miller

That’s the point. Miller+Love>Mayo.

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

by BigBenign on Dec 2, 2008 12:27 AM CST up reply actions

I get the point; just don't agree.

If there’s anything our tour with Paxson has shown us, it’s that in the NBA, one star is a lot more valuable than two good players. Two “fives” don’t equal one “ten.” You know the drill.

But who knows – maybe McHale thought Love and Miller could both be stars, too.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Dec 2, 2008 7:58 AM CST up reply actions

It really isn't a question of who is, or will be, better.

Any scout and any statistical measure said both would be likely be perennial All-Stars but not superstars. Maybe Mayo would be better (and you’d think Minnesota thought so since they drafted him), but not necessarily.

The real question (for me anyway) in which a lot of people speculated is: “How are two fundamentally-sound but not that athletic, kinda pudgy PF’s going to defend the bigger and better PF’s and C’s of the league?”

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

by tyger1147 on Dec 2, 2008 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

Another reason why McHale needs to find new work.

However, I thought there were serious worries that Love would struggle with the athleticism of the NBA game – and that this would hamper his ability to be an all-star player.

Anyway, I’m just grateful we’ve got Rose and they’ve got Love.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Dec 2, 2008 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

Didn't Love go to UCLA?

And Mayo was born in West Virginia, so I think it’s just McHale being an idiot once again. Love isn’t a scrub, but Mayo has a chance to be an All-Star, and I don’t see Love as anything more than a solid role player (who’s not even big enough to play center).

"It never is, because I'm the Shogun. And before you get to the Shogun, you gotta go through a lot of ninjas."

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 1, 2008 11:57 PM CST up reply actions

Love went to UCLA, but high school in Oregon (plus he's white, which

for whatever reason might make idiot McHale think he would want to be in Minnesota longer than Mayo ???)

The T-wolves still have Telfair on their roster as a salvage project at PG, so maybe he thought a 3-point threat in Miller was a more urgent need that would go great combo with AlJef’s post game.

Maybe it doesn’t matter. Both teams suck so far this year.
Minny (4-12)
Memphis (4-13)

by KentuckyBullsFan on Dec 2, 2008 1:45 AM CST up reply actions

He probably thought:

-Mayo wouldn’t be too good [I didn’t think he would be, either … extremely surprising, IMHO]
-Love is guaranteed to be OK at worst, and seems to have good fundamentals/etc.
-Miller is good and he can use him as a trade chip

Well, Mayo has been better than predicted. I thought it was a steal for him [and was shocked] at the time, though.

I think there could be some validity

there is no way if Mayo is good he’s staying in Minnesota. This is the same guy who chose USC (they didn’t even recruit him) because he was trying to market his collegiate career out of a big city. I guess NY didn’t have any schools good enough.

by CJ Bulls on Dec 2, 2008 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

He's in Memphis

but I understand the point….

Still though if the money talks and they keep guys like Gay and Gasol, you never know….the location of their games is perfect for tourism in Memphis and if they built a team they might do better than many would think….but it’s on the team to spend the $$ and to draft correctly.

But Ben apparently can’t stop raving about Rose as well

After he spent a few minutes following Monday’s practice session raving about Derrick Rose, Ben Gordon was asked if the rookie had been performing any of the hazing tasks that veterans demand of newcomers.

“Just donuts,” Gordon said. “He brings the donuts every morning.”

by Option27 on Dec 1, 2008 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

You missed the best part!

At that point, someone asked if Rose brought Dunkin’ Donuts to the team.

“I have no comment on that,” Gordon said.

I am amazed how Rose has taken over leadership of this team.

I do not believe Garnett or Kobe was this effective as a rookie. Chris Paul was good, but I do not think this good. Dwight Howard did not have the impact Rose is having. I think Riley really wanted Rose and then was convinced to take Beasley over Mayo by his Miami scouts.

Rose is definitely making this season fun. We would have been terrible if we had the 8th or 9th pick that we were supposed to have. I cannot remember a rookie having this much impact on a team since Magic Johnson and Michael Jordon.

Actually

Chris Paul was amazing as a rookie, putting up a 22.1 PER and having all the analysts say he might have had the best PG rookie year since Magic the Champion Johnson….

But Paul was on a crappier Hornets team in a much smaller market.

But it is nice though to see Rose take hold of this team when we already had nice guard talent, and veteran guard talent with Kirk and Ben leading the way….that’s the best thing to see….and who knows Rose out of the gate has been nearly amazing, and he might even improve this year (hope he doesn’t hit the rookie wall).

I'd love to go to a Bulls game this year, however my schedule may be conflicting with when I could go

Only shot I really have is in February, when they take on the Wizards in Washington. Is the Verizon Center nice?
