I think the fact that VDN

started both Gordon and Noah to start the second half bodes well. That lineup with Rose/BG/Deng/Gooden/Noah would be, IMO, the best balance between defense and offense we have. Thabo, Noah, and Noce can round out the bench.

We’re pretty much where we should be at this point in the season – still feeling their way, but showing signs of life. I’m encouraged.

Good night all!

Good and bad

Actually all good because Tyrus was defending James the way you have to. Make him shoot jumpers. Tyrus gave up one step back three pointer and he hacked Lebron on another drive. He did force the ball out of James’ hands two times.

The only bad just looks bad because Lebron made his jump shots and he had another career game. Did I mention he’s Lebron and does that to just about everybody?

I have to conclude that....

…Ben Gordon is just as valuable to the Bulls as Luol Deng is…if not more. At this point, is there ANY QUESTION he’s AT LEAST the 2nd best player on the team? The reason I say this is because we can survive without what Deng gives us. I’m not trying to belittle the 18 or so pts and 6 or 7 rbds that he will average, but eventually we can get that type of production out of a combination of Nocioni/Thomas. Gordon on the other hand gives us something nobody else on this team is capable of giving us. A SERIOUS offensive threat when the game hangs in the balance. Rose is not yet that player but he will be fairly soon. But even with his 20 pts tonight Deng was nowhere near as big a factor as BG. If I’m Gordon, I’m PISSED that Deng got 71 mil and I was only offered 56+ mil. Not saying Gordon should get bank breaking money, but he is worth more than 7 mil/yr. He’s AT LEAST as productive or more productive than guys like Boris Diaw, Leandro Barbosa, LARRY HUGHES, Jamal Crawford, Mike Miller, and several other guys who make in the 7-11 Mil range. Say what you want, but this guy brings it (turnovers and all at times though…LOL) and is valuable to us. Pay the man!!!

Having said all that...

…it’s BEAUTIFUL to watch Derrick Rose and see him be as effective as he is right now…AND HE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE NBA GAME YET!!!!!!!! Rose, if he stays healthy, has a chance to be one of the great ones. Thank goodness we are all along for the ride!!!

BG is valuable to a bad team

BG will always be a high scorer on bad teams. That will be his career.

Well, we need more than the

Rose, Gordon, Thabo, Deng, Noc, Thomas, Noah, Gray 8 man rotation if we want to compete against the best teams. The fatigue really set in at the end of the 3rd quarter. Kirk out until February is devastating. We can’t play him. We can’t trade him. I hope something happens where he can return sooner. We need Kirk or else that means more Hughes which means more pain.

My personal observations conclude that NBA Observer is one of the most knowledgeable

contributors on this blog. Speaking strictly as a passing observer but loyal fan, I agree totally with his comments, especially noting that not having Kirk is a real blow to the Bullls playoff chances this year based on the negative law of “subtraction by addition” which can be summarized by no more Kirk means much more Larry, a sure fire formula for big troubles ahead.

To all those Hinrich haters out there in Bulls country, unfortunately I’m afraid you are going to discover how valuable his sticky defense and court savvy will be missed. I hope I’m wrong. and I pray Tyrus will eventually figure out a way to convert open jump shots and finish at the rim when he does take it to the hole. It would also help if could stop leaving his feet every time his man gives him the slightest deke. If TT could suddenly become a man, the Bulls may be able to overcome this latest injury. But that, it is becoming sorely evident to me, is a BIG IF.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

Frustrating loss because what are you supposed to do against James when he's on fire

What the hell are you supposed to do when James is bombing 3s and making whatever he wants? The Bulls are simply horrible closers of semi-tight games and have been for some time. I can’t expect Rose in his 7th pro game to be able to dominate the floor for 4 quarters. But, why couldn’t they have made any kind of defensive adjustment on that screen and roll between LeBron and Varejao?

They ran the same play for seemingly the whole damn quarter and won the game, while our team runs a fluid offense for most of the game, then in the 4th they sputter and go back to “stand around watch BG and Noce take stupid shots” mode? They were able to stop his teammates from doing any real damage, but they never put the game away in the 4th, and anything less than a 10 point lead LeBron can easily make up on his own. Blah. I want to see them take advantage of a Josh Smith-less Hawks team on Tuesday and come out firing. 3 home games next week, 2-1 should happen.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"

by Ozzie Montana on Nov 9, 2008 2:48 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, I mean you can theoretically talk about making adjustments

But LeBron is legitimately unstoppable when he’s draining those long-distance threes. The bigger concern was that run they made in the 4th when BG was on the bench and so was LeBron. Our defense was pathetic (even with Thabo out there…ha!) and leaving BG on the bench for so long was plain stupid. That was the most glaring coaching mistake of the game I thought, and once LeBron came back in with the lead and also a hot hand from deep, the game was over.

VDN has a problem with that.

Twice when Kirk was hot he got lost on the bench and VDN said he had just forgot him or something. You really got to get as much out of a guy when he is hot. Can’t forget them on the bench. Unless they are Hughes, but he is only hot once every blue moon anyway.

by cranscape on Nov 9, 2008 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

There's one thing about player development and proper lineups and all that

But riding the hot hand is how you win games and look like a genius coach. When Gordon and Rose don’t play together the offense looks very 2007, and Gordon forgets that he doesn’t have to take those ridiculous shots all the time. It’s like they’re children, they do so well for 3 quarters, then forget what got them the lead (pushing transition game to get easy looks, aggressive attacks to the basket) and end up in their familiar 20 ft jumper routine.

Another annoyance is how horrible the Bulls handle Gordon getting double teamed. How long has he been in the league? Opposing teams have been trapping him for years now as soon as he gets the ball. His screener should realize BG can’t dribble and be at least closer to him for a pass. And BG has to realize himself his limitations and that there’s an open guy on the court somewhere. The few times he did that, Deng and Rose got some easy buckets. But late in the game James/Varejao run their set to perfection, and BG basically just stumbles around while his teammates look on. Maybe it wouldn’t have mattered because James was on fire, but some offensive continuity is nice.

You'd think

they’d find a way of benefiting from a trap like that. If you can pass out of it you have them at the advantage. No one goes to help Gordon out though so the advantage is lost or worse, Gordon does something stupid trying to free himself. They really need to watch film of this. A lot of it is Gordon’s inability to get himself out of traps, but if no one comes up to help him then we are missing an opportunity of a 4 on 3 situation.

VDN seems to have problems with a lot of things right now.

Fortunately for him the injuries are simplifying things (even if he doesn’t realize this).

The only play is to double team Lebron when he has the ball up top

Make him pass it or create some awesome dribble split penetration. Just do all you can to get the ball out of his hands and force Mo Williams, Wally, and Delonte to make their shots.
