Chi-Miami-Portland Trade Proposal

With all the trade proposals being thrown around on here, I thought I'd toss my two cents in.

3 Way Trade

Why Chicago does it: Get a solid backup PG prospect and an expiring deal.  Might also have to send a protected first rounder to Miami for assuming the remainder of Hinrich's deal.  Bulls would be left with plenty of cap room to resign Gordon or go after an ETO All-Star like Carlos Boozer.

Rose/Gordon/Deng/Thomas/Noah  Bench: Noc, Gray, Hughes, Gooden, Rodriguez

Why Miami does it: They have allegedly coveted Hinrich in the past, plus they still get a nice chunk of expiring deals.  Might not give them the cap room they are hoping for this summer, so they might be the first to balk.

Hinrich Wade Wright/Beasley Beasley/Frye Haslem/Frye  Bench: Wright, Chalmers, Diogu, Cook, Blount

Why Portland does it: They immediately solidify their SF position for this year and retain their cap space, although I’m not sold that Marion is a great fit for their style.

Blake Roy Marion Aldridge Pryzbilla     Bench: Bayless, Fernandez, Oden(until healthy), Outlaw, Webster, Batum.

this would not put the Bulls under the cap

so they could not sign Boozer. They would free up a lot of room under the tax threshold to retain BG, though.

I still think they could get more for Hinrich than an expiring who can’t play, but I’m losing hope…

I am too

which is why I’m starting to lean towards any trade that gives us cap flexibility. I’m starting to worry that no moves will be made at all.

Not a real bad trade for the Blazers

The problem is that I’m pretty sure they would just be renting Marion for the rest of the season. I think the Blazers will either use Raef’s expiring contract to get a player who can play point guard or small forward for years to come. If they don’t do that, then they might as well just let his contract fall off the books and use that money to resign some of their guys, sign a free agent, or both.

Any team that trades for Marion has to take the Dogers/Manny approach and know that they are just making a run at this year. Even with Marion, they Blazers couldn’t get past the other teams in the west.

I don’t know enough about the other teams to speculate on how the trade would affect them.

Miami would probably do it to get Hinrich

But the Blazers could just get Marion as a free agent next offseason — if they wanted to have him. No need for a trade here.

Blazers almost certainly would not be into picking up Marion...

……………………… bad fit for the team culture, free agent at the end of the year… Nor is Miami dealing at this point. If a Blazer deal for him were to happen, it would be at the trade deadline, for the Raef LaFrentz Expiring Contract (which is insurance-paid due to his season-ending injury), and would be predicated on Miami collapsing like they did a year ago — which won’t be happening again.

That works under the cap!

Then, when Steve Blake’s contract is up, the Bulls can go after a Derrick Rose type point guard in free agency or the draft!

Ahh, just do what Blazers fans do

Then come up with a trade for Paul or Williams.

I'd do it

and I’d also do the more simple trade Kirk+Simmons for RLEC+Sergio.

Doubtful

The Blazers would have too much money invested in the SF spot. Webster just signed a 4-year deal, Outlaw is well into his contract, and Batum is showing he’ll be around awhile. Marion has a better all around game – but the Blazers are big on attitude – and Marion carries too much star and too little team around with him. On a practical level, with Portland’s lineup, you’d really need to be swapping at least one of their SF’s, then figuring out how to keep Marion – assuming the Blazers could keep him on his game and in uniform for another 5 years of so. Otherwise, it’s a one -shot deal and the Blazers know they need to do some growing before talking about a championship.

If I were you – I’d concentrate on Hinrich and try to figure out how to get him in a Blazer uniform. That might get you some help.

One poster suggested a Fernandez/Hinrich deal to include the LaFrentz contract and one of your PF’s. That deal had two problems. In the first case, the Blazers have 4 PF’s under contract, and if Oden now starts giving them 20-25 minutes a game the Chicago PF would basically be collecting splinters on the bench most of the time. Then, you have Ferandez vs. Hinrich. If I was Chicago, and I could get my hands on Fernandez, there’s no doubt that he and Rose would light it up. It may be his first year, but the kids no fluke. As Wade, or any number of the players on the Olympic team will tell you, they expected him to do well in the NBA. He’s playing under 30 off the bench is averaging 15.4 ppg, and is the definition of energy and knowing how to move without the ball. If he moves on to 35 ppg, he’ll be a legitimite 18 – 20 ppg player. Combining him and LaFrentz was simply giving up a little too much.

It’s tough to put some of these deals together. Portland has a solid 20 year old rookie in Bayless sitting on the bench, and Chicago needs an SG. The rookie is green – as they all are, so it was natural to point at Fernandez, rather than the rookie.
