And all of the sudden we can't score.

Hmmm what changed? Oh yeah, Thabo starting BG sitting. This makes lots of sense.

No we can't

If you watched anything but Gordon’s shooting you would realize what an absolute slug he is. After his disgusting display of ballhandling that led to a turnover and a fastbreak dunk for Courtney Lee, Gordon never took even a single step toward getting back to defend the fast break that he caused, His peanut brain just shut down and he stood there planted in concrete. He does this every single time that he creates his own turnover, he is a quiter plain and simple. The only place this guy should start is at the neighborhood playground. The way things are right now Thabo should start for Deng.

Have you seen him on defense though?

He’s absolutely atrocious. He always lets his man zoom past him, and then commits some bullshit foul. He’s dumbfounded off of screens 25% of the time as well.

And whenever he drives on offense, it’s as bad (or worse) than when BG does it. He flails, screams, and almost trips over himself. He can shoot from behind the arc, though.

This isn't supposed to be a reason to condone the type of play thus far,

but some of us need to remember of how lengthy this season is, and how little experience Thomas has had so far in his career. He was thought of as a “raw with talent” player, whatever the hell that is, so I’m thinking patience is best when thinking of him.

Not taking shots

means yet another guy out there that isn’t there for offense. Granted if Thabo takes more shots he’d likely have a Hughes night. With Gooden, Tyrus, and Deng not shooting well you throw in Thabo and he isn’t even playing offense pretty much. We have Rose…and Rose out there as an offensive threat.

We went down 17

after starting the 3rd nearly tied up. We had no offense. None. Thabo was a part of that four minute disaster in that quarter. It was a big mistake not to start the third with the guys who were working well in that first half. Meaning Thabo should not have been out there.

He needs that time to

develop into the bench player he was always destined to be.

Seriously, I don’t remember him being drafted in the top ten and expected to be a future NBA starter. The guy was drafted late and was supposed to be a defensive specialist off the bench. Water him all you want, he will till grow up to be a dandelion. The guy needs to get proficient at coming in off the bench. Giving him meaningless starting minutes that is disastrous to the team is worst case scenario for “development”. He needs to learn his role. The fact they are playing around with his role is evidence they are not doing what they said they’d do — give guys clearly defined roles they can succeed at. Thabo will continue to be disappointing as a starter. Not his fault, just a fact. We will have to bring in a real SG for Rose. In the meanwhile I’d rather we have our current best guy out there so we can at least give Rose a chance to get an assist now and then.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Nov 3, 2008 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

Dude...

Why does Thabo need developmental minutes next to Rose?

It ain’t gonna help Rose develop, which is the only sort of developing we should be concerned about.

And Thabo ain’t gonna develop into the kind of player we need next to Rose even if he develops into something useful. I don’t think he’s totally awfull so far, but he’s been a complete non-entity, he looks to lack confidence, and he hasn’t shown much improvement.

If we traded away Ben and Kirk, then we’d be drafting a SG next year because we Thabo’s not developing into much that I can tell.

by Sports2 on Nov 3, 2008 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

Do you think Thabo is a finished product?

Because I don’t think he is…I am of the opinion that we know who Gordon and Hinrich are, and they are not good fits next to Rose…Thabo is an unknown quantity…we need to see what he can develop into…if anything. But, you seem think you know what type of player Thabo can be…so it makes sense that you don’t think he will improve as a player. I disagree.

I don’t think either Hinrich nor Gordon will be with the Bulls in the future, so their minutes as starters are a complete waste. We should at least find out if Thabo is another pea in the same pod or if he can be a part of our future.

So...

… in another thread you were saying Hinrich needed to be kept around for his stabilizing influence and we shouldn’t be messing about getting the team salary cap in shape or with with a lesser player like Martell Webster, even if he might be decent for us in three years.

by Sports2 on Nov 3, 2008 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

Here is my big issue with your argument

For the sake of this motion, counselor, let’s agree that Thabo deserves some developmental minutes. Those do not need to be minutes at the start of the quarters. It’s a bad set-up for the whole team when the starting lineup provides little offense and no serious outside threats. Thabo could get his 15 minutes a game that he’s getting even as a starter at a different point in the game, and the team could at the same time be in a better position to win.

You want to pick between the cake and the frosting, but go for the both of them together, man! ;)

Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!

by wjb1492 on Nov 3, 2008 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

OK, turn it around... what do you see?

I see a guy who’s now in his third year and looks like he’s bringing very little to the table for us. He’s not completely unknown… we know quite a bit about him. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, but the more you know the more exceptional he’d have to be to merit the investment.

By that, i mean, sure, someone can say “sure, some players just need more time and don’t develop until they’re in their third (or later) seasons. And you can say "sure, some players just play better in longer stints” and you can say “sure, some players suddenly learn how to shoot and develop better anticipation”. And sure, some players suddenly start playing better in their mid-20s.

There are exceptions to all of those rules individually. But Thabo would have to be an exception to most every rule you can think of… all at the same time… just to develop into a guy we’d really want to spend that time on.

And then what do we get? A guy who, just by nature of his game (even if it’s stepped up a notch) doesn’t look like a really good fit next to Deng and Rose (because we’ll need a shooter there).

On the other hand, I strongly disagree that starting the better player(s) with Rose is a waste. You want to teach him how to win and how to play with better players. Putting him in any sort of position to fail just to see about Thabo just seems batshit crazy to me.

by Sports2 on Nov 3, 2008 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

With less than 24 left down by 2, you wait to take the last shot unless you have a GREAT look. That wasn’t a GREAT look. Otherwise, you needlessly give Orlando a chance to win.

Second of all, give the ball to Rose and let him create in that situation, Gordon. Get the fuck out of the way. You aren’t the featured player anymore. Get the fuck out of the way.

In his last three “drives” in the 4Q, Gordon made a shot, committed a turnover, and threw a terrible stupid shot on the last possession.

Seriously. Get the fuck out of Rose's way.

That was absolutely inexcusable. I don’t give a shit if he made the shot before that. Rose’s was even more impressive.

And why wasn’t VDN yelling for a TO? Oh yeah, because he has no idea what he’s doing.

Noc missed

the Bulls are done thanks t to BG7’s ridiculous gunning. I am so stressed and it’s only the fourth game of the season.

sigh nice miss tho for the potential game-tying 3.

They’re going to have play much better in Cleveland.

These are two terrible teams

Did you see who kept that ball alive?

TYRUS THOMAS.

NOW GIVE HIM SOME BURN!!!

Did you see how bad he was?

Good Lord. We’re never going anywhere with him as power forward.

Did you see how bad our entire team was?

At least Tyrus is able to change the game on the defensive end. It’s the coaching staff’s responsibilty to tell him to take it to the hole and not jack up crap 18 footers. Gooden’s no defense playing ass and Aaron Gray? That’s just not gonna cut it on the defensive end, EVER. I’m so pissed off at VDN, Lu, Kirk, and Ben right now.

he also got them in the game in the first place

but sure.

Right

the issue is that he hasn’t accepted his role on the team. Just like Luol.

Noce was awesome

It’s Gordon who killed it. Noce took the 3 at the end cause he was out of time(pretty much)

i'm not blaming Ben Gordon for the entire game...

I don’t have anything but visual proof….but everytime Gordon, Noce and Kirk was in the game….they were down 17 pts I believe.

by Ayeljay54 on Nov 3, 2008 8:41 PM CST reply actions

None of them were in the game in the 3rd

when we first got down to that point in the first place. It was our starting lineup. cough And then after that they put in our bench.

Ah,

you mean every time they were put in the game they had to come back from a deficit? Yes, that’s the truth. It would be nice not to have to dig out of holes repeatedly every game.

This is going to be too soon, I'm sure

But for as irritated as people are with Ben and Kirk – and I am in total agreement that Derrick needs to have the ball in his hands – the team was still double digits with the “former” backcourt out there (14 Kirk and +20 Ben). Absolutely they need to figure out playing off of Derrick (or Vinny needs to realize this if it’s by design), but the 5 on the floor were most effective with those guys out there tonight.

by wjb1492 on Nov 3, 2008 8:41 PM CST reply actions

we lost!

they kept the ball out of d.rose hands… An Effective loss, still is a loss and worst still, players don’t know their roles and the coach staff doesn’t either.

by exult463 on Nov 3, 2008 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

That goes with the "this is going to be too soon, I'm sure" part

Yes, Derrick needs to have the ball in his hands – I said that. But Derrick having the ball the entire 48 minutes without those two playing tonight doesn’t get the team a win. Other lineups just weren’t effective.

Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!

you guys are way overreacting to Ben Gordon

he was also the guy who shot the Bulls back into the game, hit the prior shot and played his best game of the season. Should Gordon have forced that shot no. But its VDN first close game. It is their first time with Derrick Rose. They will figure it out. Gordon and Noce shot the Bulls back into the game. Don’t forget that. He wasn’t a liability on defense. He and Rose looked good together in the backcourt.

They will learn pass it to Rose soon enough. Chill

by DangerMouse on Nov 3, 2008 8:44 PM CST reply actions

It shouldn't take any more time to "learn" to pass it to Rose.

That was just selfish play by some of our guys tonight. Or, if it wasn’t selfish, it was pure stupidity.

I saw it the same way Illini

its time out for excuses, surely we have made many for these players over the last three years.

Time to exercise some tough love for the Dengs and Thomases with their combined total of 8 pts, heck Michael Ruffin if healthly might have player better? Well maybe that last comment is a stretch…!

by exult463 on Nov 3, 2008 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

i think it can be a learning moment

and I think BG and Rose is our best back court. Guys have to learn their roles. If anyone deserves blame for ball hogging its Kirk Hinrich. He went through 4 straight possessions where he did absolutely nothing.

by DangerMouse on Nov 3, 2008 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

Silver line.

We didn’t give the money BG asked.

by Azabullsfan on Nov 3, 2008 8:44 PM CST reply actions

UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Luol Deng was M.I.A. in the worst way tonight. This is a classic example of one of those games where guys wanna pin the blame on BG (although that last shot wasn’t the greatest) when the truth is if Deng had played THE MOST AVERAGE GAME OF HIS LIFE we could have won. I’ve tried to refrain from saying so and be a bit more objective….but this guy is a bum. No player of Deng’s “alleged” potential should EVER be this much of a non-factor. And people are busy trying to run BG out of town. If Deng had half a heart then he’d be the one taking shots down the stretch instead of BG/Nocioni.

I know it’s only one game and i’m sure he’ll play better…particularly after this game. But I am DISGUSTED by Deng’s performance tonight. “Potential” all-stars just don’t have games like this where they are COMPLETE non-factors.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Nov 3, 2008 8:51 PM CST reply actions

All of our starting forwards don't make 71 million!!!

I’m simply saying that along with the big payday comes big responsiblity. Now i’m not saying the guy has to score 40 every night or anything like that, but he absolutely must be a factor in some way, shape or form EVERY NIGHT. Too often he isn’t a factor. Tonight, he was the biggest waste of space I’ve ever seen.

Bottom line, you can’t be Luol Deng and be so invisible!!! I asked this question in another post, “Name another prominent small forward that goes M.I.A as often as Deng does when the game counts for something and is within reach”. I challenge anyone to name somebody that comes up as small as Deng…and it’s making me sick to my stomach.
