Trade of the Day Heat/Knicks/Bulls

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=509~1711~356~510&teams=14~18~18~4&te=&cash=

Bulls get
Shawn Marion

Heat get
Stephon Marbury

Knicks get

Larry Hughs

and Drew Gooden

Why the Bulls do this:
Clear up guard space.
And Marion and Gooden are pretty much the same players stat wise (10 pts 10 rebs). But Marion can run the floor better.

Why the Heat do this:
They are one of the only teams who have shown interest in Marbury.
They have shown they are willing to part with Marion.

Why the Knicks do this:
They get rid of Marbury.
And get two decent role players in Hughes and Gooden.
And they clear mega cap space.

8 Million this year, and 12 million next year.

This is not good. Sorry.

That killed me.

Do you think it is unrealistic or do you not like the trade?

I would do this trade if I was the Bulls. I think the Knicks would too. As for the Heat, I don’t think it makes any sense to them as they are getting basically nothing back in return for Marion. I’m sure they could trade him to another team straight up for a lot more than Stephon Marbury. Picks would have to be involved, and most likely from the Bulls.

by Mattchoo on Nov 3, 2008 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

because their plan is for 2010, not 2009

and they are desperate to get rid of Marbury. I think the Heat wouldn’t do this deal, they can get more for Marion.

by DangerMouse on Nov 3, 2008 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I definately think the Knicks would do this deal…..but I doubt the Heat would. I expect a potential Boozer for Marion deadline deal…..

Imagine the Jazz having Deron-Brewer-Marion-AK47-Okur-Millsap-Korver….wow!

Riley loves Boozer and Boozer would do well (Even if he totally makes Haslem 110% expendable, he’s a huge upgrade for the Heat to Haslem)….

by majoyenrac on Nov 4, 2008 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hughes

As the Knicks starting PG is a gigantic upgrade over Chris Duhon….Duhon goes back into his reserve role.

In D’Antoni’s system you can never shoot too many shots….it might be hilarious to see Hughes/Crawford/QRich/Z-BO big 4….that would be an impossible to beat team when/if they all get hot, but a team you could beat by 100 points on the off nights…..and it does seem very D’Antonti oriented…plus prepares them for the Lebron/Bosh/Wade offseason….

by majoyenrac on Nov 4, 2008 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

They're gonna get nothing for Marion anyway

He’s going to walk after this season.
And there have been reports that they want Marbury for whatever reason.

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

You may have a good point

but I think they would ask for a little more too. They know that Marbury’s “stock” is so low that they are essentially helping out the Knicks. I think they’d want a draft pick or a young prospect at the PF position. I wonder if the Knicks would be willing to give up David Lee in the deal and then we’d give the Knicks a 2nd rounder. Do the salaries still work? I can’t check while at work

by Mattchoo on Nov 3, 2008 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

Oh I love it for the Bulls

The idea that the Heat would give up Marion for Marbury, and that the Knicks would take on any salary just doesn’t make any sense. And saying Marion and Gooden are similar players is ridiculous.

by BNeL21 on Nov 3, 2008 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

surreal

Only the Bulls get something good out of it

by JustAnotherFan on Nov 4, 2008 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

Ummm

Marion- 12 pts, 9.7 boards.

Gooden- 9.7pts, 10.7 boards

via NBA.com

And Marion can run the floor, he was a part of that Phoenix team that was good a couple years ago….

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

You should probably use....

career stats as opposed to 3 games worth of stats if you want to compare players.
Marion >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gooden.

by BNeL21 on Nov 3, 2008 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

okay

Marion 18.3 points 10.3 rebounds
Gooden 12 points 8 rebounds

So yes Marion is a better player, I never said he wasn’t.

But they both fall into the group of 15 points 10 rebounds guys

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Except...

Marion is one of the best defenders in the NBA, and Gooden is a fringe starter. They aren’t close.

by YaoPau on Nov 3, 2008 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

I never said bring in Marion to play Center

We can get by at center with Noah and Gray for the year.

And if the match-up allows it we can slide Tyrus to Center

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

Gray at 5?

No thanks… Get me a legit C and tha trade idea is not so bad… But I don’t want Gray playing. He’s to soft

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2008 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

Ummm what position do you think Gray plays?

He’s going to get playing time.
I don’t see why Noah can’t go 25-30 mins and Gray 15-20 mins

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

I know what position Gray plays

I just don’t think that we should believe in him too much. That’s it. To me, he’s just another piece that we can use to make a trade. Nothing more…

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2008 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Gray has little to no trade value

And unless we’re getting a center, we can’t trade away one of our only big men

by Edicus2288i on Nov 3, 2008 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I'm trying to say

If you want to trade, trade for someone that could play at 5. In my opinion, having Marion or Gooden is almost the same thing – in terms of position, of course, since both play most of the time at 4 -, because we want TT and Noah to play the major minutes… So, to be a sub, I don’t mind having Gooden…

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2008 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

You question Gray at 5

when he mentions playing Tyrus at 5??????

by CJ Bulls on Nov 3, 2008 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

That idea never cross my mind

That’s why I didn’t pay much attention, to be honest

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2008 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

What happens

if Noah gets hurt? Or Gray?

by CJ Bulls on Nov 3, 2008 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

Play Tyrus :D

Ah! And we still have Ruffin and Simmons… LOL

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 3, 2008 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Sounds reasonable on the surface, but

Don’t think that the Knicks want to get rid of salary this year for salary next year, even if they are scheming for 2010.

Don’t think that Miami wants to cash in its “Marion” chip just for Marbury when they might get him for nothing if they wait awhile.

The Bulls would just be renting Marion for this season, but since Gooden won’t be resigned longterm and we can’t wait to get rid of Hughes, this trade would be better for the Bulls than it would be for either Miami or the Knicks.

So do it, if they will.

by BigWay on Nov 4, 2008 12:15 AM CST reply actions

I say Miami is the first to laugh at this trade...

They are interested in Marbury on the basis that New York cuts him or buys him out as is heavily being reported/rumored.

That doesn’t mean they would trade Marion for him. Marion has a better value to them as an expiring deal. Even if they aren’t getting great offers for him now, they will only get better as we get closer to the deadline. And if they don’t, Miami will probably let the deal expire and enjoy a little cap room.
