Derrick Rose is . . .

Ok lemme think of all the comparisons I've heard up until now . . .

1) Jason Kidd with a jump shot

2) A quicker version of Deron Williams

3) A bigger Chris Paul

4) A 6'3 version of LeBron James

5) Kevin Johnson

6) Dwyane Wade

7) Tony Parker

8) And whomever else you can think of.

The point I'm trying to make is that I'm getting tired of all the comparisons the whole world is trying to make for Derrick Rose.

If you notice above, he's been compared to a wide range of different styled players. With that being said, he's clearly his own comparison.

To all who wish to compare his game . . .

Derrick Rose is Derrick Rose. So please stop talking about how similar his game is to any of the players above because he simply has a little bit of everyone inside him which makes him unique in his own right.

That's what has me so excited

The fact that there is no comparison for D.Rose indicates to me that he is a superstar the likes of which we have never seen before.

by robinhood on Nov 29, 2008 3:04 PM CST reply reply actions actions   1 recs

AGreed but...

those comparisons are real. He truly does have little characteristics from each great player, which is why he is going to be the next big thing. The city of Chicago does not realize how big of a blessing D.Rose is. The man is simply amazing, his humble personality, his work ethic, and then his natural ability is something people have never seen before. His quotes are perfect everytime i read the papers. This guy is special, and it would be a shock if we didnt win a championship in the next 5 years. Pax needs to grow a pair, and give Rose a big man. Forget about Tyrus, the guy is just simply stupid. He does not know how to play basketball. His head is not there. It’s the only thing that is stopping him. I really mean it. He is just dumb, not intelligent. Watching him play is not fun anymore. Lets pray for the best! SCREW PAX!

Never said they weren't real . . .

It’s just that if you combine everything, you get someone totally different than any single comparison

by Option27 on Nov 29, 2008 3:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I get what you're saying,

but I don’t see the harm in making comparisons. It’s unavoidable really. Until Rose becomes the player he’s going to be, people are gonna want to project him to gauge what kind of value he could eventually have for the team. Everyone knows he’s not gonna be exactly like the player he’s being compared to, it’s just a fun way of determining his strengths/weaknesses. Throw me in with the “6-3 version of LeBron” group by the way.

Baby Lebron

Although honestly, maybe Lebron is really a big Derrick Rose…

Consider: Lebron shot .41 from the field his rookie year. Rose is at .48. Lebron turned the ball over 3.5 times. Rose: 2.75….Across the board Rose is more efficient, while playing the same physically and athletically overpowering style as “King James.”

It’s a small sample to be sure, but if Rose stays steady or improves, that says something.

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

by BigBenign on Nov 29, 2008 5:05 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think the baby lebron works

mainly because of rose’s overwhelming physical prescience at the position. He is very “raw” but is still getting it done because of physical gifts.

by mandoman10 on Dec 1, 2008 4:08 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm pretty sure the city of chicago knows how much of a blessing rose is

rose is the only reason why i don’t kill myself when i watch the bulls play, its pretty evident how terrible the rest of the team is when you watch any game

by big tuna on Nov 29, 2008 4:07 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's not even close to the same type of player as Deron or CP3

If anything, he’s a more PG-inclined version of D-Wade, which is fucking awesome. Their games are strikingly similar…the way they finish around the rim, the way they attack, the explosiveness, their builds, etc.

good description/comparison

man…Derrick Rose with a steady step-back jumper ala Dwyane Wade….that’d be nice

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

by Evil Pax on Nov 29, 2008 4:55 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think he keep forgetting that Derrick actually tries to get his team involved first

Before he realizes that his only shot at winning games is to know he’s the best option right now.

At least Utah and New Orleans have players who can make shots for Deron or Chris.

Derrick wants to be a guy that averages double digit assists more than just score points.

But the ultimate stat for him is wins and losses.

If he was averaging 10 assists, you would most likely see the Chris Paul or Deron Williams in him but he is attacking at will cause no one else can hit a shot.

by Option27 on Nov 29, 2008 6:10 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He may LOOK to get his teammates involved first,

but he hasn’t yet shown the same type of passing ability as D Will or CP3. Not to diminish Rose at all cause he’s been incredible, but he has not been a very good interior passer and gotten his teammates high percentage shots around the rim. That’s an area of his game that really needs improvement (along with his defense). The very first game Lindsey Hunter played he got Tyrus two dunks, he’s obviously not even close to Derrick in ability, but he has that craftiness after he gets good penetration.

by Juiceboxjerry on Nov 29, 2008 6:32 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

ROSE was wearing diapers,

when Hunter started playing professional basketball. Hopefully, Pax keeps Hunter around as a mentor for Rose, since Hunter plays well for his natural ability. (That, and Hunter is currently the best option as backup PG when Rose sits to rest.)

by Granny Waiters on Nov 29, 2008 7:13 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah the passing isn't on the same level as the scoring

But I’d assume it’s much easier to get yourself involved in the game rather than the 4 other guys around you. Part of it is the offense is so reliant on Rose and BG taking turns attacking the rim, Deng has been just “whatever” offensively that there isn’t much for him to create for. The few times his big men roll to the baskets, he’s gotten them the ball for a high percentage shot. Passing and finding the open man (how Paul or Nash make some of the passes they do is just crazy) is something that he will improve upon as he gets more time with his teammates and understands their playing styles.

If you think about it, he’s learning something new every game. It’s like getting a new essay to write every day on a different subject. He learns a new defensive scheme to stop him, a new offense, new players, etc. He’s trying to get his teammates involved, and he’s had a couple of nice passing games.

by Ozzie Montana on Nov 29, 2008 7:32 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, there's no doubt he'll improve.

Like you said he’s shown improvement basically every game he’s played. One thing he needs to work on to help that is trying to keep his dribble alive longer. It seems like once he penetrates he looks to pass, then if it’s not there he’ll pick up his dribble. He needs to keep his dribble alive more so he can kinda patrol the baseline, and look for his big guys for dunks and easy baskets.

by Juiceboxjerry on Nov 29, 2008 8:01 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Derrick Rose is a better, shooter, passer and ball-handler than Wade.

I think he’ll be a better offensive player than Wade. Especially considering that they’re close to the same build (or could be when Rose is the same age as Wade—he’s two years younger as a rookie), and he’ll be facing more PG’s while Wade faces mostly SG’s, I think I feel real confident he’ll be better.

Now, whether he learns to play defense as well (anticipating passing lanes for steals, etc.) will be whether he’s “merely” a Top-10 player or a Top 2 or 3 player. At least, in my opinion, of course.

While I agree for the most part,

I still think Wade is the best “comparison” that can be made at this point. I do think you might be discounting Wade’s passing skills, but the point still remains. I’m not big on comparisons, but if one has to be made, D-Wade is the closest thing to it right now.

Also, Wade is probably the second best player in the NBA right now

So I hope your prediction of Rose being even better than him is right ;-p

Move over LeBron!!

I know it's a small sample size

But Wade currently has a PER of 31.5. It’s possible he’s not getting enough attention right now because of the whole idiotic LeBron to NY shitshow that will dominate the league for the next 2 years.

by Ozzie Montana on Dec 1, 2008 6:06 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hadn't even looked at his PER

to be honest, but from the few games I’ve watched him and the other stats I’ve seen, the guy is just off the charts right now. He’s basically been LeBron, but maybe a hair below and obviously not quite as physically dominant. It’s good to see him back (and better than ever, really). I believe he is also leading the league in 30 point games with 7. Pretty damn impressive.

And the best part about Wade's dominance compared to LeBron

is that he keeps his mouth shut after he scores baskets.

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

Wade does his share of showboating/stare downs

Whatever, if you’re that good to back it up go for it.

Someone should tell LeBron to shut it,

the way Cartwright told MJ to shut it.

I love the way Rose will do something spectacular, and act like it is routine.

i hate lebron's scowling

and wade doesn’t nearly do that.

and i agree with granny above, that he acts like breaking miller’s ankles was just an average play. ;)

by Jaina on Dec 1, 2008 10:48 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's an irrelevant thing

Lots of people hate LeBron or Kobe because they show off, but I don’t care because if you’re that good whatever, who’s going to stop you?

I personally like the humble star mode of a Tim Duncan, but if Rose wanted to scream and pound his chest after a big dunk, I wouldn’t particularly care either.

"It never is, because I'm the Shogun. And before you get to the Shogun, you gotta go through a lot of ninjas."

Someone could stop them,

by putting a foot under them when they come down or otherwise taking their legs out. If that type of showboating had gone on in the 1960’s, the player would have been made to pay the price.

Maybe the NBA needs to install a taunting foul.

Rose did not put getting free merchandise

above staying eligible, so he could help his high school team win.

James let the “Chosen One” nonsense go to his head as a teenager, and is putting self-promotion above team with his talk of 2010 free agency.

Rose may someday disappoint, but right now he is showing character and dignity beyond what is expected of someone his age.

I'm glad to see....

I’m not the only person who was reminded of a bigger, stronger Kevin Johnson when watching D. Rose play. I don’t think people remember how good K.J. was until injuries started catching up. Watch the youtube of him giving The Dream the business. Hopefully he’s not as injury-prone, or a criminal, like KJ.

by Ayeljay54 on Nov 29, 2008 5:30 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what's interesting

is if you look at Kevin Johnson’s and Chris Paul’s numbers in their first three-to-four years in the league, they’re eerily similar. A little more similar than CP3/Isiah Thomas, I think. It’d be nice to see Derrick Rose enter that stratosphere with production and awesomeness.

"He's not scared to take that shot," Rose said. "That's Larry. No matter what, I don't need to remind him to shoot. He's willing to shoot any time."

Just a random note

in the commentary for NBA 2K9 they address Rose being compared to Williams and CP3 and then go on about Rose isn’t like either because he combines the speed of CP3 and strength of Williams along with so many other attributes.

It's weird-

I’ve played football (vid) games before with friends, and it was really fun, but for some reason hoops games always felt clunky, never really capturing the speed, thrill and flow of the sport. I’ll try 2K9 then. I’ve got some nephews too young to kick my ass in real basketball, but I’m sure they’ll settle for some virtual revenge instead. :)
