Bill Simmons goes ga-ga for Rose

Star-divide

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/081126&sportCat=nba

He pretty much anoints Rose as the next great PG in the game....while trashing the rest of the team and Paxson in the process. Fun read though.

1. Has Derrick Rose exceeded every conceivable expectation?

Yes, yes and yes. Yes. Yes. Absolutely yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Unequivocally, 100 percent, yes. As God as my witness, yes. May I get struck down by lightning if I'm lying, yes. Yes. Yes. Yes yes yes.

Even Simmons acknowledges that Gordon is gone after

this season.

That’s why I can’t get too excited about this year’s backcourt rotation.

"even Simmons"

he knows less and speculates more than others who’ve said the same. So I wouldn’t view him as a measuring stick.

But yeah, it’s looming over the whole season. Hopefully Paxson’s reluctance to let ‘his guys’ go actually works in his favor this time.

I agree with your assessment of Simmons.

I meant “even Simmons” as in “even that lowly, ill-formed, bloviating Southie wannabe can see the writing on the wall.”

Also, I don't think that Paxson's attitude will be the

stumbling block.

I think Gordon is simply bitter and wants a fresh start with a different franchise. Now, that bitterness may be alleviated or forgotten if other teams don’t make significant offers.

If everyone agrees that that's the case, then I personally don't want to see Gordon play.

Play Larry Hughes full time, I don’t give a shit. Why would we play a guy big minutes in a rebuilding year when he’s just gonna bounce after the season? So that he can help us get to the playoffs and we can earn the right to get our ass kicked by the Celtics in the first round?

How about we play ...

ANYONE EXCEPT LARRY HUGHES
OH MY GOD NO
I mean … Thabo? WE HAVE OTHER GUARDS!!! Anyone. I would rather play Michael Ruffin out of position than Larry Hughes, and I know that hate’s a little overboard, but … really. No Hughes.

Gordon will not receive more than the MLE, O.K. maybe 1 penny more

and he may not even get a full 5 year MLE, so if all he cares about is money, which is obvious, he will be forced to come crawling back to Bulls, unless fo course we no longer want to over pay for him like we did in each of the last 2 offseasons.

by BigWay on Nov 26, 2008 11:41 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, because nobody overpays for scoring.

Nope. Nobody at all.

History isn't much of a guide for the next two years, I don't think,

because the next two years are going to be wacky. Teams are thinking about 2010, teams are thinking about luxury tax, teams are thinking about the flagging economy . . .

You’re right that scoring is overvalued, but this financial climate is not like anything in the history of the NBA.

by arjoseph on Dec 1, 2008 10:07 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

People always find a way

to justify buying overpriced things, and I think this has held true when it comes to NBA GM’s as well.
Especially the teams that don’t have attractive or big-market locales to lure in the 2010 players: they’ll get a proven scorer like Gordon for 10~12 million per [or more if he keeps how he’s been playing up: Michael Redd?], rather than try and fail to participate in the 2010 bonanza.

Bye Bye Bg and Captain kirk

Hello Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh? Everyone loses, and everyone wins….i guess

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....

by piccolomair on Nov 26, 2008 7:00 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

The only loser would be Gordon

The Bulls and their fans would be huge winners, and Hinrich will still be getting paid so he is no worse off.

Seems like non-Chicago writers only look at box scores.

I keep reading about how great Rose will be once he develops a jump shot when his mid-range game has been money for most of the season.

And I hate Bill Simmons.

Yep. His jumpshot looks fucking awesome.

The game against the Jazz, pretty much everything he put up was nothing but net. His elevation is amazing. Basically, he’s nearly unstoppable…already.

I think he totally nailed the most important part.

Which was the whole bit about how badly coached the team is and how bad our roster is. How much of an indictment of Paxson is it that less than 6 months after the Deng deal it is already viewed as one of the worst/untradeable contracts. It’s incredible, after reading that it should be cool to see a guy like Rose det some love nationally for his heroics, but all I can think about is how much I hate John Paxson.

by Juiceboxjerry on Nov 26, 2008 1:14 PM CST   0 recs

DISSENTER #1 RIGHT HERE!!!

Lexdiamonds0730 in the house as the #1 proponent of not giving Deng all that money. But i’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. His style of play doesn’t mesh well with what Rose does (Deng is a slasher and Rose’s penetration inhibits that slashing), but if he can figure out a way to get in line then I’m cool with Deng…as long as he and all his fans realize he is no better than the 3rd option on this or any team!!!

by lexdiamonds0730 on Nov 26, 2008 7:50 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Almost forgot, tried to get Okafor for him also.

How about Deng for Gerald Wallace, right now. Think Charlotte would bite. Not, Deng makes more money.

by BigWay on Nov 26, 2008 11:47 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Eh ... I was ambivalent.

We overpaid a bit, but his career looked like he was on an uphill path. Kind of an Elton Brand case, only at SF and not PF.

Good on him to bash Paxson.

The “job” he’s done recently has been an absolute joke and a half.

by Illini15 on Nov 26, 2008 1:15 PM CST   0 recs

Agreed

Pax has been granted a second chance w/ D. Rose. If he takes it and “builds through the draft” or something other than landing two established all-star FAs (one of which is a 20/10 PF) to pair w/ Rose then he must be fired and his name removed from the three championship banners in the UC. When the 2010 FA signings end, there will be two classes of NBA teams – the haves and have nots for the next 6-10 years. What’s it going to be Pax? Since you have failed miserably to draft talent, you are going to have to buy it.

by windycityhoops on Nov 26, 2008 1:47 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Haha

“But to watch Rose’s unselfishness slowly rub off on such a messed-up, immature, overpaid, poorly coached, terribly put-together Bulls team has been one of the most random shockers of this season”

by gobulls1124 on Nov 26, 2008 1:55 PM CST   0 recs

He's to generous with his insults.

they are not all like that.

on the other hand, if people could start believing tyson chandler is a budding superstar, then of course these bulls players will play better off of him.

by gman2849 on Nov 26, 2008 7:41 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Bill Simmons has no concept of market value contracts

He thinks everyone is overpaid except for players he loves and no-brainer superstars.

Coming from a man that I can't stand as well. I'm impressed
Just know that I wouldn’t change a single thing about his game other than giving him a reliable jump shot (which should come soon), which doubles as the craziest thing about Rose right now: He’s beating guys off the dribble WHO ARE ALREADY PLAYING OFF HIM BY FIVE FEET!!!!!! Do you realize how absurd that is?

He really has been watching

Most overrated NBA blogger on the internets

He recycles the same weak jokes, the same tired pop-culture references, the same lame schticks.

He has very little actual insight into the game of basketball.

He’s a petty douchebag.

He fronts like he’s the quintessential Boston guy but lives in LA … by choice.

I’m sure I could think of a few more reasons if I thought he was worth the effort.

WORD.

Bill Simmons is a tool. His articles were cool 7 years ago when he was new and fresh. He knew what he was writing was bullshit, and that was a good portion of the joke. His every-fans insight was refreshing. Now he is an arrogant fool that actually believes what he writes is true. He is on Dick Vitale’s level.

by ridindirty on Nov 28, 2008 10:55 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I would rather watch B***** coach,

than listen to Vitale commentate.

by Granny Waiters on Nov 28, 2008 8:35 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Well he hasn't been watching lately...

or he would have mentioned that his jump shot has been killer. I could see him nitpicking and saying his defense needs a little help (I just think he’s exhausted), or interior passing, or pick and roll game… but the jumpshot has been real.

I thought the article was hillarious...

and there was this…

I called my buddy House, a diehard Wiz fan, and opened the conversation with, “Would you trade Jamison and Songaila for …?” Before I could say the rest, he just started screaming, “YES! YES! YES! ABSOLUTELY! GIVE ME THE CAP SPACE!!! YES!!!!” Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Washington Wizards!

I wouldn’t mind having jamison… but I don’t know a trade we could make for him that wouldn’t hinder us for 2010…

by kidronmusic on Nov 26, 2008 6:43 PM CST   0 recs

I wouldn't mind

Since Gooden is a mere toll booth on defense, at least Jamison can score. Then again, I would mind sacrificing cap space for the next 4 years for a guy who’s been in the league for 11 years.

Simmons ... I've heard this before

“Andres Nocioni, Luol Deng and Larry Hughes have unwieldy/untradeable contracts, and two high lottery picks (Ty Thomas and Joakim Noah) look like ninth men at best.”

Simmons you’re an outsider, “who knows less and speculates more than others who’ve said the same” , therefore regardless if it has sustance, most here don’t care and plus Paxson, an ND alumni, is known by the Virgin Mary.

After all.. this is Chicago… and we have a image to uphold. Plus we might get another lottery pick this year, but you probably think unless it is the 1st pick we will waste it anyway. So! maybe you’re right. But don’t forget this is Chicago.

man up!

by exult463 on Nov 28, 2008 10:07 PM CST   0 recs

Well, that sentence is wrong because:

-Noah is a lot better than a ninth man.
Everything else … yeah.
